Rainbow Bee-eater

Almost all other bee-eaters are found in Africa, Asia, and Europe, making the Rainbow Bee-eater the only bird of its family found in Australia! There is currently some debate on who its closest relative is: either the Olive Bee-eater of southern and eastern Africa, likely based on proximity, or the European Bee-eater, based on more recent molecular genetic analysis.

Like all bee-eaters, these birds are very social, and nest on the ground. The females dig out their nests by balancing with her feet and wings and using her bill to dig, while the male brings her food during the process.

Rainbow Bee-eaters (Merops ornatus)

Known to the Noongar people as "birranga", the bee-eater's Aboriginal Dreaming story tells how the birds came into being when a rainbow shattered and its colourful shards fell to earth. They can often be seen perched on telephone lines, fences and bare branches, from which they dart forth to snap up passing insects such as honey bees, native bees, blowflies and dragonflies.

Adolescent Rainbow Bee Eater.

The pastels and soft focus, which I love, were caused by the boke of twigs and leaves both in front of and behind the bird. That did horrible things to the contrast, but shooting raw files helped by saving plenty of extra information.

HIHI ok quick question since ur the only bird person/expert i know. What birds have cool feather colors but ARENT overwhelmingly rainbow/multicolored? Trying to find birds to base character designs off of is HELL since my ass just looks up "pretty bird" and gets some of the worst color combos on the planet,,,

Gouldian Finch (these may be too multicolored, but I find the distinct colors to be pretty striking!)
