ALSO I’ve seen no one talk about the horrors of Ahiru experiencing shark week for the first time??? So I took it upon myself to doodle out a comic about it. Fakir would probably know a thing or two about it given his literacy knowledge (and the fact that he lived with Raetsel half of his life).

Duck gulped as she saw the fine piece of metal go through the flame, then let out a faint whimper as the flame was blown out. 

Fakir’s eyes were narrow, focused, like when he held a sword. “Okay, now remove the—”

“I can’t do it!” Duck raised her head up so fast from in Fakir’s lap that their heads nearly collided if not for Fakir’s reflexes. However, there was a faint sound of a needle falling to the ground.

Fakir glared at her in a way that Duck knew he did when he was worried rather than cross. “Idiot! That’s even more dangerous with a needle! I could have poked your eye out.”

“I’m sorry, Fakir…” Duck replied, immediately feeling remorseful as she lowered her hands from her ears. “I just… I don’t think I can handle piercing my ears after all. M-maybe it's because I can’t wear them when I’m a duck…”

She had been given back her human form for a year now, after a lot of twists and turns and getting angry with Fakir before they made up and handled it (but that was a story for another day). What happened was, suddenly, Duck woke up with a pair of earrings on her pillow with a small note from Rue. About ‘how she should wear some different jewelry for a change.’

The earrings were lovely, delicate drop earrings that shined gold. Precious and elegant: something Rue would definitely pick out in Duck’s mind. 

Though she wasn’t sure how it got to her, Duck loved the note and the gift, but there was a problem: Duck didn’t have pierced ears.

Which led to their current situation. Fakir volunteered to help— he had his ears pierced and had learned how to do it from Raetsel— but when the actual event was coming, Duck chickened (ugh) out.

“...” Fakir sighed. “We can always ask Karon if he knows someone that can make these clip-ons.”

“... But… I would feel even worse if I had to change them. They were a gift after all!”

“She could have remembered you didn’t have pierced ears,” Fakir muttered, before pulling his hair back to tie it back up. “Let me just— think about it. Help me find the needle.”

Duck brightened the lamplight on the bedside table and began to carefully search, stewing in her own thoughts.

Honestly, she was being a baby. She had faced much tougher stuff than a little needle. But it didn’t disperse the discomfort in her stomach when she saw the needle coming towards her ear. 

Her hands felt the edge of fine metal with a prick, and she pulled her fingers back, only to see it didn’t bleed. She considered it, then realized what she had, and picked the needle up. “Found it!”

“Good. Put it on the table for now.” Fakir said, going back to sitting on the edge of the bed. He held the earring box in his hand. “Hey, Duck. Mind if I try one of these on?”

“Huh? Oh, sure!” Duck agreed willingly. Most of the earrings Fakir wore were simple studs that wouldn’t be easily noticed. 

Fakir nodded and took out one such stud, setting to the side, and then turning back to look at Duck. “Watch me, alright?”

“Mm, watching.”

Fakir huffed, though there was a quirk to his lips, before he picked up one of the earrings, and with clear care put it on. The gesture Fakir made, with his hair pulled back but his head slightly bent, as if he was taking position in ballet. 

Duck watched with rapt attention, then blinked as she saw the earring hang below his earlobe. 

“Ohhh…”

Fakir’s eyes narrowed. “Were you paying attention?”

“I was. It— it didn’t look like it hurt…”

“Exactly.” Fakir smiled. “It might be sore for a bit, but the numbing will help. If you still don’t want to, we don’t have to, but you shouldn’t be afraid.”

“...Mm.” Duck nodded, smiling back. “Why are you so smart, Fakir?” 

“You know that part of it is just bravado.” 

Duck giggled. “Only a little part.” 

Fakir hummed back, looking at her with a fondness that made her whole body feel warm and light. They got another ice cube, and Fakir lit another match. 

When the first one was done, Duck went over to the mirror to look at it. Even though the numbness was going away and her ear ached, the earring made her happy. She turned and waved over to Fakir. 

“Don’t you want to do the other one?” Fakir asked.

“In a minute. I want to see the both of us.” 

Fakir went over and the two crowded in front of the mirror built for one rather than two. Once they were there, Duck smiled at their reflection, before turning her head and kissing Fakir’s cheek.

His cheeks immediately went flushed. “H-hey!”

“Hehe, sorry. You’re just really pretty and handsome, Fakir.”

“Duck, you…” Fakir looked down, though he couldn’t hide his embarrassed smile. “Come on, let’s finish up.”

“Okay! But, I have a request…”

The next day, the two walked to the market, hand in hand. The denizens of Crown Town watched one of its many young couples, only to be surprised:

When they turned their heads, onlookers would see that they both had a beautiful gold earring in one of their ears.
