Dagur: "And you carry-! A shield?"
Hiccup: "Yeah yeah. Just a shield. Just a plain old shield."
Dagur: "Very... ornate. My sister had one just like that."
In RTTE, when Heather is reminiscing about what she remembers of her birth father, she mentions about the shield, saying something along the lines of, "He would sometimes let me play with his shield".
And during her flashback, we see her playing with said shield and Dagur running around being his deranged self in the background.
I find it endearing how that shield is the one thing both siblings recall vividly from when they weren't yet separated.

So Ulyana got to the island of Caldera Kei when she was 16 years old. She is a year older than Hiccup and the others.

i swear to fucking god im going insane
The songs my mind first goes to are
Call me maybe, Domino, or some other 2000-2010 song
...maybe grenade by bruno mars??
BUT I JUST DONT KNOW. THIS FUCKING QUESTION IS MY ROMAN EMPIRE
'WHAT TUNE DOES SNOTLOUT SING TO IN TONE DEATH'
im going to go insane
What do you think about the musical episode ? Personally, I rarely like that kind of thing..
Personally, as a hardcore musician and composer, musical episodes tend to be a huge hoot to me! XD
Tumblr media
I think that “Tone Death” has its positives and negatives. I love that the writers legitimately tried to write a musical, but also that they gave a good backstory for why all the characters were singing in the first place. They didn’t belt their voices out of nowhere for no explicable reason, but they had a purpose to keep singing all the time.
I also like the personality behind each of the main songs the characters sang. Hiccup would sing something like that. And Snotlout’s… Snotlout’s was the best. It captured his personality perfectly, the music was the catchiest and best orchestrated, and Snotlout sang it pretty well.
I also think that, humor-wise, it hit solidly for a lot of fans. I think that a lot of us were laughing pretty hard when we actually saw Hiccup open his mouth to sing. I felt second hand embarrassment for Hiccup, but was laughing enough that I actually had to skip back a few minutes in Netflix to rewatch the moment and catch what Hiccup’s lyrics actually meant.
So there were definitely some positives here! I’m legitimately glad they tried! I went off and told my friends this thing existed as soon as I finished watching the episode!
But… still… you might have noticed I said “tried.” Sorry for that word, friends… but as someone who’s done a lot of music… “tried” is the word I’m going to use to describe the overall execution of the episode.
I will admit, as far as my own perspective is concerned, that I feel like they wasted a lot of potential. They wanted to write a musical episode, but it looks like they didn’t know how to properly execute it. Ironically, it appears as though they planned and focused the least on the music out of all parts of the episode.
What I feel happened is that they got the music composition team into the picture too late. WAY too late. It seems like they thought that they could write the lyrics of the music into the script and sneak the music production into the picture later. While that is the way it tends to go down in animation when the composer is simply doing background music, that’s not at all what you want for a musical when music is the forefront! I can tell, just by listening to the final results, that there was not enough collaboration and emphasis given on the music. The singing on all the characters was drastically out of tune, and even those individuals who brought in some proper singing technique (like Snotlout) missed more pitches than they should. In some areas, it looks like the voice actors were simply given the script in the sound booth and they had to sing and make up melodies on the fly… and that’s part of the reason we have so many melodies sound mysteriously like famous tunes.
Hiccup’s song? The first line starts strangely similarly to “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”, and all the following lines I swear are barely changed from something in Broadway or some sea shanty or both… I’m REALLY annoyed with myself, but while I recognize the tune, I can’t remember the stupid name (*whispers*… someone help me…).
Tumblr media
And at the very end, when the youths are confronting the large Death Song, there are some other suspiciously similar melodies, too. Snotlout is soooo not singing an original melody (again, today is not my day, help me on the name, it’s driving me INSANE… I KNOW THIS STUPID SONG AUGH… notes are G A G D C G A G D C), nor do I believe is Hiccup.
Tumblr media
If we wanted this to have worked fully, the musicians would have needed to be far more in the forefront and more proactive getting this done. I’m guessing that the leadership ladder didn’t work out right, they made some rookie mistakes about how to interact with musicians because they’ve never had to coordinate so closely with musicians, and the result we got for this musical episode was some singing but not as strong and outgoing of a musical as we could have gotten.
The animators could have watched a few singers to also learn how to animate singing faces… you gotta have your mouth open, folks! But, hey, I would have been fine if alone they’d done a bit better of a job with the tunes.
So it was a lot of wasted potential. Great potential, but not capitalized upon as much as it could have or maybe even should have been. They could have done a lot more with this musical episode. They could have brought the singing element in earlier, staggered the songs, made the songs more memorable and impacting, got better recordings of the singers, and made the songs more original instead of rip-offs. There’s a part of me who’d love to redo all the songs and give them the proper production and attention they deserve. Because it is a fun concept. I know it might not be your sort of thing, which is totally fine, but for others, this is an awesome reality come true!

Snotlout, entering the clubhouse while Hiccup and Astrid are setting the table: Hiccup, you cooked?
Astrid: How did you know it wasn’t me?
Snotlout: There’s six people in the Edge, and you’d be my tenth guess.

ok actually i do have comments
viggos sad face is cute
hiccup in the third picture reminds me of roxie in scott pilgrim: "you punched me in the boob!"
smirking viggo is hot
angry/trapped hiccup is also hot
they hold handdsssssssss
viggo's face (bottom right) when hiccup says hes nothing but a common criminal (not knowing that viggos going to help him) causes me pain
viggo smiling without malice for the first time also causes me pain, especially since he's about to die
ok thats all the commentary my brain can handle rn
screenshots from triple cross
my family cancelled our netflix subscription partway through watching it so uh...no more high quality rtte photos from me unfortunately. im not paying $16 CAD just to watch the last couple episodes of RTTE in higher quality
for some reason its not available with the basic $5-6 plan, which I would have been willing to pay
oh well. i got some pretty good screenshots in the time I had access
im a bit annoyed (because i was not told ahead of time that the account would be cancelled)
I don't have a lot of commentary other than that i enjoy seeing viggo and hiccup's expressions (especially viggo's reaction to johann calling him a two-bit crime lord)

Murtagh goes to a place where Galbatorix killed the leader of the Ringers 100 years prior and is very upset and Thorn takes offense when Murtagh sounds okay with the possibility of never being born.

You know, when the Sky Torcher got killed by Jörmungandr at the end of season 7, with the sound of bones snapping and everything, but then it turns out in season 8 that he was "almost killed", I was a little annoyed. (There wasn't even a plot reason for him to survive)
But then I just rewatched season 6's Webs' Masters, an episode in which two Deathgrippers (you know, two "evil" dragons) got killed because something bigger ate them, the episode takes place in the Giant's Realm.
Just like with the Sky Torcher, it happened offscreen, there was a juicy snap, but unlike the Sky Torcher, they don't come back.

These ^^^ are the faces of dragons and their riders who just saw two dragons get munched and crunched by something really big the second they dared to take flight.
Like Alex states; "it sounded like granola cereal."
I find it's interesting that both this episode as well as the episode in which the Sky Torcher got "killed" were both written by John Tellegen, the man who famously wrote the Hiccup whump episode, Midnight Scrum.
He also co-writes season 8's Of Gods and Monsters, which is the episode that kills Sledkin. This means that every episode with a death was written by good old John Tellegen. (The other co-writer is FM De Marco, who wrote episodes likes Buffalord Soldier.)
I think the Sky Torcher was meant to die, but that there might've been some pushback, which lead to the reveal in season 8 that the Sky Torcher somehow survived getting crunched by Jörmungandr.
