♥️Reveling in Richonne - TOWL

#61: The Happy Ending (1.06)

The Grimes family is reunited.😭🙌🏽

That's it. That's the intro. 😋 Because we just gotta dive right in and break this super rewarding and moving Grimes family reunion all the way down. It's everything. 🥹...

First off - The way we WIN.

After so many years, we really got to witness our babies get their happily ever after with their babies. They won. We won. 🎉😭

And the biggest reason I say we win is because something that we love lives. Richonne's story has been able to live to its fullest potential and in the most captivating and fulfilling way. From the iconic start in TWD to this impactful conclusion in TOWL. 🙌🏽

When working on these TOWL revelings, I tried to have the majority of them written and ready before I even started sharing the posts in July to ensure I’d deliver on my promise and follow through to the end. These final Grimes Family reunion posts are the only ones I put off writing for a while because, as far as we know, this is it. 🥲 The last page we get to see of Richonne’s beautiful years-long story. The last new Richonne scenes to break down and revel in. 

Since TOWL was announced as a 6-episode miniseries, I’m currently approaching this final scene as the official conclusion of Richonne's story. I know Andy, Danai, and Scott haven't outright said they're never reprising these roles, and the more I hear their answers to the questions about a return, a part of me thinks they know they're coming back in some capacity, be it a cameo or more, and already have an existing contract perhaps, which is why they can't 'spoil' anything by confirming or denying a return.

The way I view it - if Richonne makes another appearance, I'm absolutely seated and celebratory. And if they don't, I'm absolutely satisfied and grateful for what we got. As the gift that keeps on giving, they've already given us over 10 years of golden Richonne content, and this Grimes Family 2.0 reunion put a lovely bow on top of this gift. 💝 It was truly a beautiful and fitting conclusion to their story. And most of all I want the Grimes Family to get to live happily and at peace together, so I'm more than elated with how Richonne's story comes to a close here. 😇

So, as the broadcast announces “A historic day to begin a new chapter for the Republic” - which of course Rick and Michonne Grimes would be the ones capable of bringing about a fresh, historic, and thriving new chapter for a whole city of thousands - we see a glimpse of Judith sitting beside her walkie. And then I love hearing Michonne on the other end say, “Shoto, it’s Daito.” 🥹

Ahhhhhhh the Grimes family reunion was happening! 🥳🥳🥳 And I'm so glad it's with the original actors too. 😭🙌🏽

I remember there was a period when some were a bit worried that Richonne wouldn't reunite with their kids in TOWL. For me, I felt so sure it was gonna happen because that was the only way Michonne and Rick would feel their mission was successful. And I love how it gets confirmed that they’ll be seeing the kids as soon as we see this walkie-talkie moment. 

...Even tho for some of us, the Grimes family reunion was basically confirmed a little earlier, when a certain two illustrious actors filmed a trip down memory lane in Senoia, Georgia. 🤭

Our lovely captains have a sweet little exchange during that great memory lane special that clued me in on what to expect. There's a part where Danai is talking about Judith and RJ and how she loved seeing Judith with the mini sword on her back. Then, as others also picked up on, Danai said something to Andy about how now Cailey has nearly outgrown the sword, and she seemed to think Andy could co-sign that she has. And that had my extra self’s ears perking up. 😋

Because Andy had been having to work double time to recall some TWD scenes he was actually a part of during this trip down memory lane - so I said to myself - Self, it is highly unlikely that he knows if Cailey, who he never had scenes with, is now outgrowing the sword…unless he’s already filmed a scene with her wearing the sword. 😏

So yeah, after that I was no longer even 1% unsure if Richonne would have their family reunion. It was happening. 💯 And the way it happened is Love personified. 👏🏽💗

It had to be such a euphoric moment for Judith to finally, after over a year, hear her mom on the other end of that walkie that she said she'd always keep with her. And it had to be euphoric for Michonne to no longer get static but finally get her baby girl on the other end. 🥹

I remember it was emotional watching Michonne and Judith's final walkie-talkie conversation in TWD, especially knowing they'd eventually fall out of range. And so it was a great feeling to see their walkies finally make a connection again.

I like the way it’s shot with the walkie on the steps and Rick’s holster and gun on Judith’s hip. Again, Michonne summed it up perfectly when she said Judith is her and Rick. And it’s sweet seeing Judith immediately grab the walkie when she hears her mom’s voice. 

Also knowing Michonne was able to reach Judith on the walkie, I think this would definitely imply that Rick was able to talk to or at least hear Judith before they see each other in person. I’d be so curious what that very first exchange over the walkies was like between Michonne, Judith, and Rick. I'd imagine it was quite emotional for Rick to hear Judith's voice on the other end for the first time. 🥲

So then there’s the return of Rick’s battle-tested cowboy boots as he steps off the helicopter. And I really like the way it’s shot as we just see his feet first and then Michonne’s feet join him. It feels like yet another way to illustrate and celebrate that Rick is no longer alone. The love of his life found him and now they really will be by each other's side for pretty much all things going forward.

As TV's greatest husband and wife step off the helicopter, we get to see Rick and Michonne more fully and I adore that they’re holding hands. 🥰 They always look so married. And as has been established, holding hands is one of Richonne's favorite things.

And then you know we gotta take a moment for Michonne’s outfit 🔥🔥🔥. Cutest outfit she’s ever worn. 👏🏽 I LOVE it. 🤩

It’s great how they chose something that feels both fresh but also so true to Michonne for her final outfit and it just feels like she’s again getting to return to herself through the clothing. A fashion It Girl, through and through. 💅🏽

Michonne stayed proving an apocalypse does not have to stop you from stylishly color-coordinating and accessorizing. And I love the cowrie shells being back in her hair too. One of the last times she wore cowrie shells - a symbol of fertility - RJ arrived shortly after. So of course seeing the shells in this finale had my Richonne baby fever activated. 😋 It’s also great she got her katana back as well. That sword will always find its way back to its Mama Michonne. 👌🏽

And I of course also love that Michonne and Rick are wearing matching colors. A signature Richonne thing to the end. 😌 And Rick and Michonne matching in that tan color is great because the color scheme is giving "Must've been something else then." 😊

Then, I think it’s such a touching and well-acted moment when, before we even see the kids, we can tell that Richonne has spotted their kids from the way they react. 😭

Something about the way Michonne holds Rick's hand and then runs to her babies just feels like such a wife and mother and it’s so sweet. Like if you showed this running clip out of context to someone unfamiliar with the show, I feel they'd immediately be able to tell that who Michonne and Rick are running to is their children.

I love how Michonne drops her bag and just immediately runs to the kids. And then it’s precious that Rick sees his children for the first time and drops his bag as he eagerly runs to them as well. Goodness, this whole thing is just heartwarming x10, I can’t. 🫠

And it gets extra heartwarming when we see Judith and RJ for the first time, sprinting to their parents with the biggest smiles on their faces. 😭😭😭 Richonne's babies are here. 🥹

The way I rejoiced seeing the adorable Grimes kids running the first time I watched. 🙌🏽 I love seeing how ecstatic they are and the way Judith looks back at her little brother as they run. A true big sister. And of course, I adore that Judith is wearing the sword like her mom and her gun in her holster like her dad and that RJ is wearing his dad's signature Sherriff hat and dressed like little Carl. It’s all so perfect. 🥹

And for me, watching this scene would be the hardest Try Not To Tear Up challenge yet, because the way Judith and RJ smile and run into Michonne’s arms, and the three embrace - My heart bursts. 😭❤️‍🩹

They all hold so tightly to each other and it’s precious. For a long while, the only Grimes family Judith and RJ had been used to was just the three of them. So it’s really sweet that the three of them have a moment to reunite after missing each other for so long. RJ's smile and Judith's face when she hugs her mom always makes me want to cry.

(Side note: There are people out there who ignorantly discredit and downplay Judith and Michonne’s mother/daughter relationship and that will forever be foolish to me (though sadly not surprising 😪). Judith has only ever known life with Michonne, and Michonne has been raising Judith since before she could walk. Their mom/daughter status cannot be denied. Interestingly, Judith is the one Grimes kid who has only ever known life with both Rick and Michonne. Carl was old enough to recall when Michonne entered his life. RJ is old enough to recall when Rick entered his life. But Judith doesn’t recall when either entered her life because her parents have been raising her since she was in diapers. They’re the only mom and dad she’s ever recognized. Yes, Judith knows Michonne didn’t birth her but that’s not the only qualification one needs to be a mom. In every other way, Michonne has been Judith’s mom for as long as she can remember. So when Judith looks at Michonne it’s clear she sees her mom, not 'the woman who looks after her', not her 'play mom' - her mom. 👌🏽)

I love that Michonne gets her own moment to reunite with her kids and that they let that moment breathe. Michonne is the anchor to this reunion as they all look to her as the connecting piece of this family right now. It’s realistic for the kids to take their time greeting Michonne because that’s the only parent they really know.

And just like Rick and Michonne had to do a lot of sacrificing on this journey, so did Judith and RJ.

These kids sacrificed valuable time with their mom so that she could go bring their dad back home. So I love that they get to have a moment of being just so elated to be back in their mom’s arms.

Rick stands in the back of the shot, as he anxiously awaits greeting his kids. I know Rick appreciated seeing this moment between the three and immediately seeing that his kids love and view Michonne just as highly as he does. He got yet another reminder that he chose the perfect woman to be the mother of his kids seeing the way his babies beamed and ran in Michonne's arms. 😊

And then it is again so precious when Michonne and the kids look at each other and whisper "Hi" and just again have these joyous smiles on their faces.

RJ’s quiet little ‘hi,’ 🥹 Michonne asking how they’re doing and acknowledging they’ve got so big since she last saw them, 🥹 the way they can’t help but smile and laugh, 🥹 and then when Michonne and Judith put their heads together. 🥹 I love every second.

Michonne finally gets to hold the two who fueled her to keep going even in the moments during this TOWL journey where it felt like all was lost. She was not going to let her kids down and she was going to ensure she made it back to them.And Judith and RJ knew their mom would make it back to them too, no matter how long it took. 

I also love seeing Michonne’s M bracelet in the shot. Again, she really came back adorned with gifts from her husband because Rick loves her the way a cherished wife should be loved. And of all the gifts Rick has given Michonne, we know she cherishes most the gift of their children. 💛

It really is beautiful how we went from Michonne telling Carl one kid was enough for her to her now having four kids (…and counting possibly). And I love the way it's visible how Michonne's soul just lights up so brightly as she holds her kids in her arms.

So as the three embrace, Rick stands back and watches his beautiful family. And the way Rick is looking at them, it’s clear this is all so surreal for him.

It makes sense that Rick would hang back for the reunion as Michonne has a moment with their kids. It reminds me of how on Carl’s last day, Rick approached it like he understood Michonne and Carl needed their time together as a mother and son because he knew he was losing his son and Michonne was too. Also, it's evident during this reunion that Rick wants to be mindful of whatever contact Judith and RJ want with him.

So Judith gives one more smile over at her brother and mom, as Michonne adorably lifts up RJ’s hat and embraces her baby boy, who is not such a baby anymore, saying, “Hi there.”

And then Judith turns to Rick with a smile. As they look at each other, Judith becomes emotional and starts to cry. She walks to Rick and finally, after all this time, gets to embrace her dad. 🥹

Y’all, there is a reason I put off writing these reunion posts for so long. 😭 This entire scene between these four makes me emotional for so many reasons.

I think it’s so sweet that Rick is letting his kids set the tone for how they want to interact with him in this scene. You know if it were up to him, he’d probably be bawling and pulling them into an embrace, but he also knows that he’s in some ways a stranger to them now. So the thoughtful way Andy plays it, I love that it’s clear Rick wants to let the kids decide what they’re comfortable with. And the second Rick knows they want to hug him, he so tenderly and lovingly hugs them back. 🥹

The way he hugs Judith, you see how layered this moment is for Rick because he’s so happy to be back with his daughter and also sad to see just how much he’s missed as she’s done a lot of growing up in his absence.

Plus, during his time with the CRM, Rick had to devastatingly accept that he may never see Judith again and even tried to convince himself that maybe she'd be safer if he didn't come home to her and protected her from afar. I feel like hugging Judith right now, Rick probably feels so overcome with emotion knowing that he's actually getting to hold his daughter after thinking he'd never get this chance again.

Hearing Judith cry as she hugs him and seeing the fatherly way Rick holds her head and tries to hold it together while clearly feeling so many emotions. I cannot. ❤️‍🩹 My heart is moved during each part of this Grimes family reunion. 

While still hugging him, Judith emotionally says, “I knew it, Dad. I knew you were still out there.” It’s so sweet that this is the first thing she says and that Rick gets to hear that Judith never lost her hope that Rick was alive.

While Rick came close to ending it a few times during his years away, he managed to stay another day and then another after that and another after that, and I like to think that day by day he was somehow subconsciously being fueled by his wife and kids belief in him. They believed he was still out there and that energy helped keep him here long enough to now be back with them again.

I also love how no one ever came and took Rick’s place in his family’s life because these three Grimes were always believing Rick was still out there. Judith held onto this faith that her dad was alive even when the odds of Rick being alive seemed low. It feels like Michonne modeled that example to her of continuing to believe. And their belief was worth the wait. 🥹

And then Judith looks up at Rick and says, "I just never wanted you to feel alone.” It moves me so much that while Rick was afar hoping Judith was okay, he now gets to know that his daughter had been hoping he was okay too. 🥲

As a big sister myself, I just gotta say Cailey plays the big sister role so well. Especially when you’re the family-oriented and responsible big sister, you always just want to make sure everyone is okay. Your younger siblings, your parents, aunts, uncles, everybody. And I love that Judith’s big thing was wanting to be sure her dad never felt alone. That’s so caring. 😭

I also feel like her saying this is her reiterating why she encouraged her mom to go after Rick. On the walkies in Michonne's last full TWD episode, Judith told Michonne, "What if he's trying to come home too, but no one will help?" And she was spot on with that prediction. In TOWL ep 3, Rick even verbalized to Michonne that he had asked for help, but he didn't get it.

So even though it made Judith really sad to be away from her mom, she knew Rick might be alone and in need of Michonne's help even more. Never wanting her dad to feel alone was among the many reasons Judith urged Michonne to go get him.

And another thing that's poetic to me is that Judith is such a pivotal character in getting Rick and Michonne to meet the way they did. Had Glenn and Maggie not gone out to the store to get Judith's formula, Michonne wouldn't have run into them and brought the formula to the prison for her future daughter. Also, even the very night Rick and Michonne became an official romantic couple in 6.10, their couch moment began with smiling over Judith on the baby monitor.

Since she was born, Judith has helped ensure her dad didn't feel alone because her very existence played a part in Rick finding his ultimate life partner and soulmate, Michonne.

So next, Rick says his first words to Judith in years when he looks at her and says, “I thought I was..."

I like that he's honest about how he did think he was alone at first. There definitely was a time when Rick was confronted with the depths of loneliness within the CRM.

Rick continues, "Then I realized..." and I love that he looks over at Michonne as he says this. And the way Michonne holds RJ while smiling at Rick and Judith interacting again for the first time in years. 🥲

All those years in TWD, Michonne saw how much Rick loved Judith, and so it clearly means a lot to her to see Rick face to face with their daughter again. Rick and Michonne both just seem so present and grateful for this moment as parents.

Rick looks over at Michonne, knowing how instrumental his wife was in both his daughter being who she is today and in helping him realize what he says next - "I wasn’t.” 🥹

It’s really nice to see that Rick realized he was never alone because he always had his family.

When Rick tells Judith that he realized he wasn’t alone, Judith gets to hear Rick essentially say he realized her own little mantra that she wrote on her family drawing, “My family is always with me.”

Judith and Rick both know the sadness of losing your loved ones' memory, but I’m so glad they now have each other back to affirm that while the memory can seem lost, it can always be found again.

Also the way Rick says this line with such a tender tone and tears in his eyes and then he looks at Judith with a smile and blinks probably still trying to comprehend that this little lady in front of him is the daughter he last saw as a toddler. 😭

And then Judith cries again as she leans in and hugs Rick and I’m a puddle of tears inside. Like when you think about how hard Rick fought for his daughter all those years on TWD, it’s just so special to now see him get to hold her and already get a glimpse of the great loving person she’s turned out to be.

I know Judith is about to feel so loved and protected by this great dad, and I love thinking about how they’ll now get to reestablish their bond and just have the best father-daughter relationship. 

It hit me that years ago, we got to see the very first time both Rick and Michonne ever held baby Judith and how it was a big moment for both of them. While she stirred up painful memories from their past, Judith was also this little bundle of hope for the future in their arms.

And then in this TOWL finale, we beautifully got to see Rick and Michonne hold Judith in their embrace one more time. 🥹

Michonne reuniting with her son and daughter and Rick reuniting with his baby girl were such golden TOWL moments.

With these touching exchanges, the Grimes Family reunions had all occurred. And now it was time for the big Grimes Family introduction. It was time for Rick to finally meet Rick. 😭

So we gotta bring it on home now and talk about the special, heartfelt, and rewarding final moment of The Ones Who Live. 🥰👌🏽

Something I've been seeing quite a bit lately is this notion that Richonne's reunion with their children would have been better or would have had more impact if other people had been involved too, and by 'other people' they often mean Daryl.

Now, I'm not opposed to a reunion with other people or indeed a reunion with Daryl, it's just not something I'm particularly interested in or hoping for, if it happens it happens if it doesn't I'm fine with that too but what I don't like is the apparent disregard for Rick's family in favour of what some people see as a more important relationship with Daryl.

Rick and Daryl are friends, 'brothers' if you will, though I have my own thoughts on how strong their relationship still is, but while it is an important relationship in Rick's life, it isn't the most important.

Rick is and always has been a family man, his family is what kept him going right at the start and what he fights for everyday. While held by the CRM, the reason he made it through was his family, his dreams of Carl and dreaming of and writing love letters to Michonne. The hope he still had, however distant it was, of getting back to them was his driving force in surviving and that hope only failed when he thought there was literally no way out. At that point he would have rather died than live without his family.

Some of these people who believe a Rick and Daryl reunion would have been more impactful are Rick fans but I find it hard to see how you can be a true Rick fan and not understand that his wife and kids mean more to him than anything and anyone else in the whole world. They are his world and his reason for everything he does.

I know people are allowed opinions and that's fine, if you think Rick would have rather seen Daryl when he stepped off that helicopter, or that a reunion with him would have meant more or been more impactful then go for it, but it's important to remember that in reality that isn't what Rick would have wanted. The only people he wanted to see at that moment were his children.

TOWL (S1 hopefully🤞) was for the Grimes, it was about Michonne finding her husband and bringing him back not only to himself and to her but to their children. This is a family who would do anything for each other and a couple who will literally burn the world to save each other.

I'm glad there was no one else there when they stepped off that helicopter, I'm glad it was just the kids, I'm glad they all got that time alone together without the presence of anyone else. No one else was necessary, no one else was needed and it shows just how well Andy, Danai and Scott know these characters that they didn't have anyone else there. They could have done, not Daryl for obviously, but someone else could have had a short cameo but they knew in that moment no one else mattered to that family but each other.

Friendships are hugely important and Rick and Daryl's friendship has been an important part of TWD over the years but Rick is a family man at heart and the reunions with Michonne, Judith and RJ will always be the most important to him, they are the most important people in his life

i need Danai and Andy to confirm that there’s gonna be some kind of continuation of TOWL because all I do is spend time thinking of what richonne might be doing now that they’re reunited with their kids and i need a real answer.

my current Richonne obsession: the future richonne baby that is undoubtedly on the way

i can understand why some people want richonne to have time with their kids then choose to have another child. it would be beautiful and intentional which is something that matters when it comes to richonne. however I’ve come to like the idea of michonne being pregnant already. so my solution to this to get the best of both worlds is that michonne doesn’t know that she’s pregnant yet …

most women don’t know that they’re pregnant until about 8 weeks (more or less since it depends). let’s say michonne is early stages like 2-3 weeks by the time that they get back to Alexandria and doesn’t know yet. richonne spends some time with their kids and they go on dates and they get caught up on what they missed. one of these dates they talk about how much they love their family and how it would be nice to experience being parents together from start to finish. and since we know rick is a romantic, who is very madly in love with michonne, i can just see him already have it all planned and pictured in his head. he expresses to michonne that he wants to be there to get her whatever she’s craving, to see the baby on the sonogram and hear the heartbeat, read /talk to her belly, see their baby be born this time, hear their first word, first steps, and just all the things they didn’t get to do together with rj. michonne agrees (of course) and says she’d love for them to experience that too. they both agree though that as much as theyd love to have another baby, they can wait a little on actively trying so they can get more settled in since they’ve only been home for about a month. a couple weeks go by and michonne is realizing it may be time to take a little pregnancy test.

i can’t decide what I’d prefer in terms of the reveal. on one hand, I think it’d be cute for michonne to include rick every step of the way. she tells him she thinks she’s pregnant and he’s there for them to see the results of the test together. on the other hand, I think it’d be cute for michonne to take the test herself and then plan some kind of special way to tell rick. i’ve loved the idea of surprising your partner with the news since I was a kid and saw becky from full house try to tell jesse she was pregnant by making him a dinner that was baby themed (she had baby carrots, baby corn, etc), if i remember correctly becky was nervous to tell jesse cause they hadnt planned it but with richonne that’s obviously not the case. I think it’d be cute for michonne to excitedly plan something intimate for just her and rick so she can tell him they’re having a baby.

or maybe even a secret third option idk lol but either way i think almost any execution of a richonne pregnancy reveal that is trauma-free is what they deserve and what we deserve.

i need amc to throw soooooo much money at Danai, Andy, and Scott and promise them everything they could want to continue this story. alternatively maybe amc can contract the three of them to write romcoms outside the twd that stars Danai and Andy. just saying anything at this point 😭😭 but i just need them back on my screen happy! and i need it real bad. real real bad

Any fun pr headcanons??

Let's see. I'll tell you some for teams :

RPM

the rangers all moved back in the garage, which got renovated to a more proper rooms and stuff, ones the world settled or started to settle in the new building.

rangers also have inter-dated in the team, with a number of pairings. the longest lasting is whatever ziggy/dillon have and while people thing it would be summer/dillon second it's actually scott/dillon.

Dr.k has a whole chart of this thing which started with scott/flynn getting together, than it moved to fling ziggy/flynn/dillon had, scott/dillon are still a thing or whatever they call it, dillon/summer laster half the time they spent out of Cornith, Dr.k herself had a situationship with ziggy during this time along with scott/gem having a chemistry.

right now there is no labels and the team one huge mess when it comes to romantic relationships, in a good way.

a lot of dillon's thoughts go into holding himself back because his implants give him some serious edge over others.

JUNGLE FURY :

casey shows the rare case of being a red and the youngest of a ranger team. his team very, I mean VERY protective of him.

jarrod is the top student once he rejoins the academy, this time accompanied by a nicer attitude. he becomes a master later on while camille picks up a job at jungle karma.

dominic and fran drop by every three months because well dom is used to travelling but fran gets homesick and the pizza place is her home in more sense than one.

RJ comes by the school for guest lectures after the theo and lily quite literally dragged him with them that one time. he and his dad still have some issues they need to work out.

master mao is still sceptical of jarrod and camille sometimes but casey always reassures the two that he won't let anything happen.

the three of them dated a while too.

NINJA STORM

shane struggles with a lot of anxiety since he never thoughts he would good enough to be a ninja properly let alone a the RED RANGER, no thank you to his parents, once he talks to sensei about this he helps the wind ninja develop a meditation habit which helps a lot.

cam is treated like the youngest, especially after the whole thunder ranger and abduction thing but it's actually not the youngest. it's actually tori but she is youngest in the group but older at home so her personality doesn't make someone think she is the youngest and post season marah takes the place of youngest.

hunter and shane almost share their birthday with them being a day apart, yes they fought over this but at the end blake won because his is a day before hunter's and insists that he and hunter share it. hunter agreed so his brother can celebrate for a extra day and he doesn't have to share it with another red.

dustin is the official mediator of the team and cam will never say it to his face but the techie can remember the every single time the yellow ranger was the only thing keeping them together.

DINO THUNDER :

ot4 (red/yello/blue/white) cuddle piles. which conner is dragged into until he eventually gets used to it.

trent complete the homework the fastest because he well he begins it the same day, he lets the other three copy and also ethan corrects something if it's wrong for him before scribbling down the write thing for himself.

the gems have kind of spirits with their own thoughts that's why they pick their host and not the other way around.

the four of them can't be seen separated for long, the whole school has a rumor they are all in a relationship with each other which might be true.

hayley's cafe is more of a crying about schoolwork spot because all of then spend hours there, even after closing, helping each other to not have a significant fall in grades and stuff while they fight to save the world.

Happy Singles Day by Ann Marie Walker 

⭐⭐⭐⭐(¼) 

This was cute! I picked it up on a whim, when I found myself with some free time at the big library branch across town, because I liked the idea of a romance novel celebrating singlehood. I liked watching the MC figure out who she is outside of her job, and her love interest was such a compelling dude. Between his daughter and his sister, and his bed and breakfast, he really made the story for me. It wasn’t quite grumpy/sunshine, because Lucas opens up as things progress, but something about his reluctance to even be invovled in the story at all really entertained me. The only thing I’d say really bugged me was the dog. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs. Like, so much. But the cover has a picture of a little terrier shaped pup, and then the text describes the dog as a “pit bull/boxer mix,” and it drove me nuts every step of the way. A little detail, maybe, but the discrepancy really threw me off.

Summer on Blackberry Beach by Belle Calhoune 

⭐⭐⭐(¾) 

What a fun little summer read! I’ll admit, I was expecting there to be some sort of Christmassy detail, given that the town is called Mistletoe, but once I got past that, this was so delightful! I grabbed it from a book thrift store while my friend was in town visiting, after the teacher/Navy SEAL fake dating plot caught both of our attentions. I liked watching the characters learn how to move past their respective losses, and that they communicated really effectively through much of the story. Too many times, the plotline falls apart if the characters would just have like one mature conversation, so I really enjoyed that they did that here and the story held up. It was refreshing to watch these characters grow together and find the futures they didn’t think they deserved.

Biting Through The Skin: An Indian Kitchen In America’s Heartland by Nina Mukerjee Furstenau 

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 

I’ve had this on my shelf for … probably two years now? At least a year and a half; I’m pretty sure I bought it at the library fall book sale on Fill A Bag day. Food as a vessel for culture has always interested me, and the idea of a memoir pairing Indian food with Midwest culture (where I’ve lived my entire life) was particularly fascinating. Turns out the author spent most of her childhood like three hours from where I grew up/live, in the same small town where one of my friends is from! Every chapter includes stories about the Indian foods that flavor her memories, and the recipes are at the ends of the chapters. I haven’t cooked any of them yet, but maybe someday! The essays were heartfelt and compelling, like I could feel myself in the kitchen right alongside the author and her family, with the warm, hearty spices and sentimental stories.

Darcy by RJ Scott, Meredith Russell 

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 

At some point, I got this for free on my Kindle, and it got the callup this month for being something short enough that I could read it in a couple of days, but compelling enough to hold my attention (also, for having a five-letter title!). I’m admittedly a sucker for fake dating-turned-romance, but usually the “dating” couple is the endgame, so it was interesting to read a story that turned the trope on its head. Darcy and Adrian had such an instant attraction, but more than just sexually. I loved seeing them open up to each other, and how supportive Darcy was through the whole story, of both Adrian and his sister, and especially at the ending. I’m definitely planning to pick up the rest of the series at some point.

The Water Baby by Roz Denney Fox 

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 

Finally, I got back around to reading this for the first time in … 15 years or so? I don’t remember exactly when I read it for the first time, but I do remember picking it up from my mom’s book stack when I was probably too young for Harlequin romance novels. I liked it then, and saved it from a garage sale pile a few years later. It’s well-loved and rough around the edges, but the best books always are. Luckily, it’s just as good now as it was years ago, and absolutely worth the shelf space for all this time.

Egghead: or, you can’t survive on ideas alone by Bo Burnham 

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 

I don’t have much to say about this one that I haven’t said before. I love poetry, I love Bo Burnham, and some of my favorite poems ever are in this book (look at you, The Letter!). This particular reread was just shy of an hour, sitting on the floor of my denbrary, looking for something to spark inspiration for an upcoming writing project I'm trying to plan. I’m not sure yet, but I think I figured it out, at that!

The Last Flight by Julie Clark 

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 

Fuck this book. Five stars. I’m writing this right about an hour after I finished devouring the book in three days. Mostly two days – the first day I only had time to read like the first chapter. Usually, I’m not one for thrillers, but this caught my eye at the same thrift store as Blackberry Beach up above. Once I realized it’s a signed copy, and was only three dollars, I basically had to give it a try. And holy HELL, am I glad I did! I was sucked in from the first few pages, absolutely enthralled right down to the end. In fact, on page 142, I actively shouted “what the fuuuuuuck?!?” out loud to my empty apartment. It’s that sort of a book. I had a loose suspicion of how it would end, but there were a lot of things I didn’t see coming. I’d KILL to see this one as a movie, and I’m absolutely going to read the author’s other thrillers. Sometimes, there’s a benefit to stepping outside my wheelhouse, because I have a feeling this is going to be a top 10 for 2023.

yeah -- the amount of author trust allll over elwing_alcyone’s 2004 wolfstar ship manifesto is quite something to look back on in the year 2023!

"JKR didn't have to write that in." "JKR didn't spend three years writing this book to shove in things that didn't matter." heck, it opens with the line "One of the things I have always liked about JKR's style is that, in the books, at least, she doesn't spoon-feed her reader."

Remus is an absolutely wonderful person who has half the fandom in love with him, including me — werewolf or not, you'd expect him to be snapped up double-quick. But he's not. Why? Why has JKR left it so open-ended? She could have sunk this ship in a sentence. She didn't, and now, the odds are that she won't.

not at all to imply it was all sunshine and roses and author love -- seems like there were plenty of people who fell out of love for hp during the OOTP/HBP era. specifically, i did see LOTS of fan unhappiness in regards to how tonks was written during HBP. it wasn't all shipwars-related unhappiness too, though:

I said in an earlier entry that HBP might have broken me as a fan. Thinking about it, I came to realize that what I said as a joke is probably the truth. I was active in the fandom for a year-and-a-half when OotP was released in its defective glory. And I did something people somewhere call "fanwanking." Which is not the thing where you are an obnoxious little brat involved in an online flamewar and get some dishonourable mention in a certain Journalfen community, but rather that you take a text's, a canon's goofs and mistakes and plotholes and lacking characterisation and explain them away. It doesn't matter how badly as long as the fanwanking maintains the illusion that the text's creator is Teh Greatest. I did that with OotP. But the more I did it, the more realized that the number of ethical plotholes was a pretty tough job to fix in two volumes. But the illusion, the belief that Rowling knew what she was doing was stronger than the evidence that the books were really that fucked up and had been that way for a long time… HBP was the book, I was unwilling to explain away. Rowling introducing Tom Riddle's genetic evil was something she had really no good way of ret-conning. And with her not being able to fix it in the future, it became clear that she doesn't even realize it's broken.

there is ALSO, hilariously, this academic article in the journal Religions from 2014, which investigates whether or not snapism constitutes a religion. their conclusion:

It is easy to fall into the trap of considering religions such as Christianity to be a base standard for the examination of all other faiths. When faced with a contemporary manifestation of human behaviour and belief such as fandom, it is also common to assume that nothing genuinely sacred can be born of Livejournal, Dreamwidth, and Yahoo Groups. Yet, there is much evidence to the contrary. but seriously, the article was a really interesting read. as someone who spends most of their time on the marauders side of the fandom, it was fascinating to see the exact same <my fave> deserved better sentiment expressed with all sincerity by """the other side""":

The idea that Rowling was somehow wrong in her portrayal of Snape or the decisions she made for him is surprisingly common. […] Many Rowling critics are also frustrated by what they see as hagiographic treatment of the Marauders and Lily Evans at the expense of Snape

Many had come to expect a more public display of his essential goodness and loyalty, and some kind of reward for the dangers he had faced. These expectations were shared and supported via two years’ worth of community discussion, speculation, and fanfiction. Oh wow, I was way too young back then but I find this fascinating - i'm referring to that post about the mwpp fandom in the early 2000s. Can I just ask you: what was people's initial reaction to SWM? And Sirius's family background? I mean, was there discourse around, did people generally like it / hate it? Were people upset about their hcs being ruined? I can't even comprehend interacting with the mwpp canon when it was still changing so much. Really really cool, I would like to know more!

Oooooh these are all GREAT questions! And I'm going to tag @broomsticks and @twentysevensummers here, because I think you're better suited to answer these historical questions than I am.

For my part, I was heavily heavily invested in reading Sirius & Harry fics (like I still am now lmao) but that meant having to read a TON of Sirius/OFC fics to get my Sirius & Harry fix. I was way less picky back then about the fics I read, because I had to be, lmao. There were SO MANY stories about Sirius having had a secret wife and kids when he went to Azkaban, and Harry then got adopted into that blended family after POA. Or, if Sirius was a single man when he adopted Harry in a fic, he usually then fell in love with the pretty, young Healer who took care of Harry post-Dursleys. I know, I know. Gag me.

Anyway, all that to say, the headcanons I ran into regarding Sirius's family usually involved him being very straight and having a secret family lmao. I didn't run into much that covered his parents/siblings. At least, not much that I remember anymore, 20 years later.

I don't remember much of a reaction to SWM, mostly because I noped out of the fandom entirely after OOTP. I read a few fix-its, and then HBP came out and ruined any hope of Sirius being resurrected, so I just.........left, lmao.

I also didn't run into much discourse, but then, social media sites where you can talk about headcanons/fics (like Tumblr and Twitter) weren't around. So basically it was me reading fics on fanfiction.net and then screaming internally about them hahahaha. I'm sure there was discourse on LiveJournal, but I spent my LiveJournal years squarely in Sherlock fandom, so I didn't see any of that.

I'm so sorry that I'm the worst person to ask this question of, lmao. I am putting this post in the Wolfstar tag, in hopes that other elder fans can actually answer your questions!

“Maybe you two should just kiss to break the tension.”

You never really expected yourself to ever land a movie role, let alone it being the role of a Power Ranger, one of your favorite film franchises as a child. You always dreamed about being the pink ranger, but since that role belonged to Naomi Scott, you were given the role of the purple ranger. Either way, you were excited and honored to be part of such an amazing cast of actors and actresses. You were in the third installment of Saban’s Power Rangers and you were extremely grateful you scored the role.

Your co-stars were all so welcoming and friendly the day you met them and you were especially fond of the red ranger himself, Dacre Montgomery. To you, he was the sweetest of them all and it’s why you were beginning to fall so hard so fast for him, but what worried you the most was the fact that you just knew he would never feel the same way about you. Why would he? He was a walking god from Australia who was Jason Lee Scott and Billy Hargrove themselves and you were just a middle class girl from America who had a dream and got lucky. You doubted you’d land another role after this one.

“Hey, Y/N! We’re ready to shoot the next few scenes!” Naomi smiled, leaving a few light knocks on your trailer door.

You grinned before sending the text you were sending to your best friend and setting your phone on the table, opening the trailer door and greeting Naomi with a smile.

“I’m ready! Was just texting the best friend.” You laughed softly, closing the door to your trailer before following Naomi to the set. The rest of the rangers were there chatting and laughing and when you and Kimberly walked up, Dacre’s eyes met immediately met yours, giving you a smile. You smiled back, cheeks going pink with blush. “Hey.”

“Hey, Y/N. Ready for the next scenes?” He asked, hugging you around the waist with one arm. Your heart leaped in your chest at the small action and you gave him a nod in return.

“More than ready. I’d say I was born ready, but that’s too cliche.” You laughed, side hugging him in return. He only chuckled, giving your side a final squeeze before releasing you and getting into position.

Oh God, am I really ready for this? For this scene? You thought to yourself, taking a deep breath as you got into your position. The first scene was set at the home of Kendall Morgan, your character in the movie, and her and the rest of the rangers were having a small get together at her house after defeating a low-level enemy. That wasn’t what was worrying you, though. It was the kiss you had to share with your co-star Dacre that had you on edge.

Was the kiss going to be good? This was your first ever on screen kiss and you did not want it to fail. Becky G noticed your small nervousness and gave your arm a light squeeze before whispering to you.

“Hey. You’re gonna do good, Y/N/N. Get those perfect lips, girl.” She winked and you had to cover your mouth to muffle your laugh. You gave her an appreciative smile and a nod of your head.

“Thanks, Becky.” You whispered in return, straightening back up when you heard the director call for scene.

You took a slow deep breath, going right into character. You were all sat around a small campfire, the light of the flame illuminating all of your faces. Dacre looked breathtaking and you had to try your hardest not to stare for too long.

“You all did great today,” Dacre spoke, looking around at all the rangers sat at the fire. His eyes landed on you sitting across from him and he smiled. “Especially you, Kendall. You’ve been learning a lot as a ranger very quickly. You’re handling the change well.”

“Yeah, definitely better than how we handled it when we first became rangers,” RJ, who plays Billy, said looking at you.

“Really? You guys think so? I just… I don’t know...feel that it all comes naturally, you know?” You smiled at the both of them, your smile for Dacre lasting a little longer, as it was written in the script.

“Maybe it does. Maybe you were truly born to be the purple ranger.” Dacre said and you looked to your lap with a smile, not even having to act to make the blush on your cheeks form. That came naturally.

“Maybe I was. I’m grateful for all of you, though. I’m happy to have such amazing friends like you on the team.”

Becky G leaned in to give you a hug and you gave her one in return. Trini was Kendall’s best friend in the film, so you had gotten pretty close to Becky along the way as well.

“We love you, Kendall.”

“I love you all too,” you grinned, giving Becky a kiss on her right cheek as scripted. “I’m gonna go grab some drinks from the kitchen, any preferences?” You stood up from your chair and looked at everyone.

“Do you have any soda?” Ludi, the black ranger, asked and you nodded.

“Soda, juice, water, milk, mmm and a secret bottle of vodka.”

“Yeeahh! Break that out girl!” Ludi laughed, earning a laugh from you in return.

“Any objections?” You asked, getting no response from anyone. “Then vodka it is.”

You snickered before heading toward the back door of the house, staying on track of where you’re supposed to walk before the director called for a cut. You breathed out a quiet sigh of relief, happy that you didn’t have to get right into the kissing scene yet.

“Good job, guys! That take was perfect. We’ll certainly use that for the movie. Let’s take a short five minute break then we’ll start the next scene.”

Thank God.

You walked off to grab a bottle of water from one of the tables off to the side of the set, removing the cap and taking a few long sips. You felt someone come up beside you and turned your head to see Dacre who was also grabbing a bottle of water.

“Hey, D.”

“Hey. You did great out there.”

“Thank you. I want my first ever role to be a successful one, you know?”

“And it will be.” He smiled, giving the back of his neck a scratch. “Are you, uh, prepared for next scene?”

“Are you?” You teased.

You noticed Dacre go a light shade of red as he silently looked to the ground. You raised an eyebrow, biting your lip. Is he blushing?! You never expected to see Dacre get so flustered over a kissing scene.

“You are? Why? Haven’t you had an on screen kiss before?” You asked softly, making him look over at you.

“Yes, but not nearly with anyone as beautiful as you.”

Your face went beat red at his confession and you felt your heart beginning to pound away at your chest. Did he really mean that? Or was he just being nice?

“Really?” You squeaked softly, which he smiled at.

“Really. I’ve been nervous about it since the moment I met you. I thought “Wow I have to kiss her and not fuck it up somehow?””

You looked toward your feet while you gave your bottom lip a bite, not realizing Dacre felt the same way you did about the kiss. You looked up at him after a few moments and the two of you sort of just stared into each other’s eyes, neither of you knowing what to say to break the silence. Neither of you realized Becky G walked up until you heard her voice cut through the silence around you.

“You guys have been staring intensely into each other’s eyes for the past two minutes. Maybe you two should just kiss to break the tension.”

Both you and Dacre looked right at her after she spoke, sly little smirk on her face as she shrugged, grabbed a bottle of water, then walked back to set. You looked back at Dacre and were about to make a comment until he grabbed your face and pulled you in for a deep kiss. Dacre didn’t know where the sudden boost of confidence came from, but he didn’t regret it when he felt you kissing him in return.

Your arms slipped around Dacre’s neck as your lips moved in sync with his own and it wasn’t until a whistle sounded that the two of you broke the kiss. You looked over to see RJ, Ludi, Naomi, and Becky all looking at you with teasing smirks on their faces and you looked back to Dacre whose gaze was still on your face, soft giggle escaping your lips.

“I think I’m definitely ready for that kissing scene now.” You hummed. Dacre chuckled, brushing his thumb against your cheek.

“Me too, Y/N. Me too.”

“Well Middleton, you have been cleared hot,” Blackburn said, leaning his head on his hands, a large grin forming on his face as he took in Rylee’s reaction. “I mean the decision is yours, no one is forcing you.”

Rylee didn’t know what to think, it had been so long since she had ran with her boys, was she ready to do it again. She couldn’t help but chew the inside of her mouth as she weighed everything up. Her meds were working to keep the flashbacks away, she was fitter than ever, her aim was still on point, the only problem was Athena, who would look after her? Would she be okay with her mama going away for a bit?

“When do you need a decision?” She asked, leaning back in the chair.

“Ideally as soon as possible but as long as you let me know by the end of play today that’s fine,” Eric nodded, knowing she would need to find care for Athy.

“Okay,” Rylee nodded, pushing herself to her feet. “Let me get some things in order and I will come back to you with my decision. It’s just one op right?”

“Just one op darling,” Eric said softly, “we could do with your skill set on this one.”

“I will let you know,”

She ran her hand over her face, her main concern was her daughter, which was the reason she stepped back in the first place. It was only one op, and she couldn’t deny she missed it, and she missed running with her boys. Without even thinking she jumped in her Audi and headed to Naima’s.

It was so lucky that her days off work fell on the same days that Athy wasn’t in nursery, meaning Rylee didn’t have to stress about child care as Naima offered, plus it helped that Athy and RJ were the same age and pretty much best friends.

Soon enough she was standing on the front porch, tapping her knuckles on the door as she waited for Naima to answer.

“Rylee,” she laughed, “aren’t you meant to be at work?”

“Yeah and I will be heading back but Eric cleared the morning off for me,” Rylee nodded, “I need to ask you something and speak to Athy.”

“Well come on in and I will make a coffee,” Naima smiled, opening the door wide so she could come inside.

She really wanted to do this, she missed the feeling she got when she was out in the action, but things had changed now and so had her priorities.

“Okay I’m just gonna come out and say this,” Rylee said, pulling the stool out to the breakfast bar, before sliding on the seat. “Eric wants me on the next op, they will be spinning up in the next 48 hours and he said he needs my skill set on this one.”

“Yes I will look after Athy,” Naima grinned, placing a mug of coffee in front of you.

“I didn’t even ask you yet,” Rylee laughed, resting her head on her fist, “I swear you have superpowers.”

“I could see the look in your eyes, the moment you said Eric wanted you, I knew what you were going to ask and the answer is yes,” She smiled, squeezing Rylee’s hand.

Rylee didn’t know why she was stressed about not having someone to look after Athy, of course Naima would say yes with no questions, this was family at the end of the day, before she could respond Athena came running into the kitchen at the sound of her mum’s voice.

“Mummmy,” she squealed, as Rylee tucked her arms under her daughters armpits, lifting her up onto the counter. “What are you doing here?”

“Well baby, I need to ask you something okay, and you can say no, and you won’t get told off if you don’t want mummy to do this,” Rylee said softly, running her thumb over her daughter’s hand. “So Papa has asked if I will join them on their next adventure,”

“So you will be with Uncle Sonny, Uncle Ray, Uncle Jase, Uncle Scott, Uncle Brock and Uncle Trent?”

“Yes baby, I will be with everyone,” Rylee whispered, watching as Athena screwed her face up as she thought. “They need mama’s help on this adventure, but if you don’t want me to go, I will tell Papa and he will understand.”

“Do you want to go?”

“Yeah baby I do,” Rylee nodded, she couldn’t lie she did really want to go, it was one op, it wasn’t like she was going back full time.

“Then I’m okay with you going mama,” Athena grinned, placing her little hand on Rylee’s cheek. “But Uncle Sonny better look after you.”

“He will baby,” Rylee laughed, looking up Naima, “And I’m sure Uncle Ray will as well because if not Auntie Naima will be after him,”

Today had been a bit of a whirlwind for Rylee, but one thing she was certain of, it was good to be rocking the greens again, and she couldn’t wait to see the boy's reaction. It had been a while since she rolled with them so she knew there would be a lot of excitement. And knew that someone would end up making a comment about how good her ass looked in the greens, more than likely from Metal.

Her grin was wide as she punched in the code to the cage room, even though she had stopped operating Blackburn fought for her to keep her cage, which was filled with a mix of things. She wasn’t going to say anything; she wanted to see how long it took them to notice she wasn’t rocking her usual gym leggings and crop top.

“Afternoon, you ugly fucks,” she laughed as she strolled to her cage, unlocking the padlock and swinging the door open, walking straight to the racking at the back, reaching up to grab her bag off the top shelf.

“Hold on a godamn minute,” Jason exclaimed, “she’s in her fucking greens, have we been thrown back in time?”

“Wait what’s happening?” Sonny shouted jumping up from the bench, to see this with his own eyes. “Roo why are you in your greens?”

“Nothing much, just taking my spot back as Bravo Six,” Rylee shrugged, playing it off like it was nothing.

“Holy fucking shit,” Metal grinned, wrapping his arms around her waist, throwing her over his shoulder so her ass was next to his face, she laughed as she felt a sharp sting when his hand connected with her ass, “I forgot how good your ass looked in these,” he chuckled.

“And I forgot how much of a perv you are Scott, how many times have you checked my ass out?” Rylee cried with laughter, as she hung upside down.

“I lost count,” he laughed, placing her down on the metal bench that sat in the middle of the room.

Rylee smiled as she sat on the bench, pulling her legs underneath her, taking in the reactions of the boys and completely ignoring Clay.

“This isn’t a joke right?” Jase asked, leaning against his cage, with his arms folded across his chest. “Are you back with us Mids?”

“No joke, you have me back for the next op,” Rylee nodded, leaning back on her forearm. “Blackburn said you guys sucked without me so he needed the best sniper he has.”

“Damn right,” Jase winked, his smile growing by the second, their girl was back, even though it was for one op, she was still back. Rylee watched as he turned to Clay “sorry kid, you are dropping down the ranks for this one, you are now Bravo 7”

Soon enough everyone’s phone went off, signally they needed to get to a briefing.

“Come on boys, let’s go crush some fucking skulls,” Rylee grinned as she jumped off the bench, it felt good to be back.
