REMINDER ABOUT THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE COMIC FOR AUGUST 2025 (MEORI IS CONNECTED!)

the cover has now acquired its final form, it was changed many times, since we could not find a suitable atmosphere for the plot, the very first version was also not bad, but it could not convey the atmosphere that I and my writing was put into the comic itself. Now this is the final result, and we definitely won’t change it. The title was also changed due to the plot. in general, if we talk about how the work is going, then we have almost completed the script itself, and I have started work on chapter 4, the work is in full swing. I devote every day and every free minute to work, I try to finalize something and remove something altogether (since I am not only an artist and an author, but also a screenwriter and editor), although it can be a little difficult since there are only two of us, but This doesn’t stop us from moving on and creating something that you might really like. I hope when you start reading this comic, you will like it and you will want to share it on social networks, thereby promoting me and my work. okay, i might have finally put my finger on exactly what it is that i love so much about utena as a character, and why i found her so easy to identify with. the utena existing in my head is a mirror to my miserable asuka shikinami. the girls are not fighting!!

i’m a very typical millennial trans in the sense that i had very little conscious exposure to queer culture and trans issues in the 90s and early aughts, and didn’t quite grasp it until i left home after high school. but in high school, without much direction in terms of my own gender, i just decided i was going to be the Best Girl. girlhood on my own terms, and it was very competitive and aggressive with only myself as a true measure. utena, i think, is a variation on this. 

utena doesn’t really wear “the” boys uniform; it’s a boy’s uniform she had customized, and you know she feels like hot shit in it. for me, it was being a pageant girl(!!!) who took my coaching from a news anchor instead of a former debutante and selected my gowns based on what i knew other contestants would never pick. i was very risky, and i won. a lot. and i was very proud of this, and i still am. i was a cheerleader, i competitively irish step danced, i served for multiple years as Head Girl at my sleepaway camp. 

i was very, very, very good at girlhood, but girlhood was not enough. it was a vocation, not an identity, so for much of my life i was able to negate any possible dysphoria simply by my desire to excel. this is a good way to get stuck in a loop. it also solidified a past that is decidedly NOT relatable for the vast majority of trans people i have met. i still conceptualize my old self as a teenage girl and young woman, and i think she was SO fucking cool, and i know she’d think of *me* as even cooler. i can’t paint just one picture though; despite all these efforts, there was so much loneliness. my airtight, well rehearsed show impressed adults and won me opportunities, but i didn’t have a lot of friends. tons of friendly acquaintances, yes, and everyone wanted me on whatever class projects required someone with bravado, but i think my peers saw through something. not that i was fake or putting on a front, but that the inner part of gender was just not coming naturally to me. we just didn’t have the right words for it yet. 

and then, i was done with school, and then, i was done with college, and then, i was done with my early 20s. tiny revolutions instead of a crumbling arena, but the arena was indeed destroyed.

utena’s wish to be a prince is one she’s carried with her for her entire life. not a boy, a prince. i wanted a version of this, too. The Best Girl was not a little princess, and being The Best Girl was never going to be enough for me. i’d like to dream that utena got the same kind of happy end-beginning that i was gifted, and the same admiration for her adolescent self that i have for mine.
