Love Finds A Way
[Thomas Hunt x Alex Spencer] [Ethan Ramsey x Ellie Shepherd]
Pairings:Thomas Hunt x Sienna Trinh; Ethan Ramsey x Ellie Shepherd (OH!MC); Thomas Hunt x Alex Spencer (F!OC) ; Book: Red Carpet Diaries x Open Heart (one-shot AU) Word Count: <1800 Rating: General Prompts: â@choicesficwriterscreations Blind Date prompt for Thomas x Sienna at a winery; @choicesfebruary2022challenge date; @wackydrabbles #132 (in bold), @choicesmonthlychallenge To Be or Not to Be
Synopsis: Ethan (with a push from Ellie) sets his friend Thomas up on a blind date with Sienna at this year's Edenbrook oncology fundraiser at a local winery.
A/N: This is a one-shot AU for the blind date prompt above. It does not exist in either of my RCD or HWU universes. I've never really written Sienna before so I apologize in advance.
A hand clapped on his shoulder as he stood at the bar waiting for his tumbler of scotch.
"How's our celebrity guest?" Ethan's eyes narrowed, his lips curling into a satisfied smirk. He understood the need for charity fundraisers and galas, yet he had never been one for enjoying his required presence. He took pleasure in knowing, this time, he wasn't alone.
The famed Hollywood director wasted no time savoring his drink; instead, he took a deep gulp, letting the rush of amber liquid burn down his throat, hoping it would dull the din of the crowd around them. He tapped his glass, signaling for another. "âand a glass of your finest house red, thank you."
He turned his focus toward his friend. "Remind me again why I agreed to this?"
"The fundraiser or the date?" The esteemed doctor quipped.
Thomas massaged the bridge of his nose, exhaling a low breath. "Both."
"You loss our last poker game." Ethan folded his arms and leaned back onto the bar counter. "Ellie's persuasive, and you didn't see through my bluff. Looks like you're getting old, my friend."
"You might recall we are the same age, so what does that make you?"
"Timeless, a classic, or in terms we can both understand, a finely aged scotch."
The bartender returned, placing the two drinks beside the director. Thomas breathed deeply, trying to convince himself to return to Sienna.
"The date going that well?"
"She's practically a child."
"She's the same age as Ellie," Ethan insisted. "And as you've already stated, we are also the same age."
"We have nothing in common. I have little interest in baking or marine life. And, what even is K-Pop?"
"You're getting old, my friend," Ethan repeated, clapping his hand on his friend's shoulder once more.
"Tell your wife I appreciate the concern about my social wellbeing; however, I do not need any assistance."
"Duly noted."
Thomas took the two glasses and surveyed the room for his date, finding her giggling with Ellie. "My apologies for the delay." He offered her the glass of wine he had procured at her request.
"Thank you!" Sienna chirped pleasantly. "We saw you talking with Ethan."
"I suppose that's my cue to go mingle. I'll leave you two beautiful people to get better acquainted." Ellie wrapped her arms around Sienna, hugging her closer. "Give him a little more time. He's a good guy." She turned to Thomas, pressing a kiss on his cheek. "You can smile; it won't kill you. Promise."
His brow rose in challenge, but her stern gaze was not one to be trifled with so he offered a half-hearted smile.
Sienna sucked her lip, watching her friend depart, leaving her and Thomas alone once more.
The two nursed their drinks, the silence between them becoming even more deafening, drowning out the crowd around them.
"Do you want to dance?" Sienna suggested cheerfully, her narrow frame already swaying to the lively beat of the music from the DJ on the other side of the room. Her smile grew as she caught sight of Baz dancing solo (and killing it) on the dance floor. She suppressed a soft laugh, waving to her friend.
"Not my area."
"Everyone can dance," she encouraged. She modeled, letting the rhythm take control as she attempted to tempt him.
"It is not that I am unable to dance. More accurately, this style of musicâif one can consider it as suchâis not my metier."
She nodded in understanding. "Can I ask you something?" Her chipper voice was softer now. "Are you enjoying yourself?"
Despite years of acting and even teaching college students, his face betrayed him. "Of course I amâ"
She laughed to herself, interrupting his white lie. "It's okay, me neither."
For the first time all night, his lips turned up, thankful to her for her honesty. "I must apologize. This might sound cliche, but it's not you. You are beautiful, kind-hearted, and clearly intelligent and talented. I'm justâ" His smile fell away as quickly as it came. He didn't know what he was waiting for, maybe nothing. He had always been content on his own with his art. Maybe that was enough.
"It's okay," she insisted. "There's nothing left to say. We can agree this isn't working."
"Let Ellie down gently? I know she had high hopes for tonight."
"You don't even know the half of it." Sienna's warm smile and bright eyes reassured him.
"I truly hope you find what you deserve." He took her hand in his, brushing a tender kiss across her knuckles.
"Thank you. I know we both will. Love finds a wayâisn't that what they say?" Sienna shrugged. "We can just agree that the way isn't here."
"That might be the first thing we can agree upon." His voice was tender and open for the first time.
"Do you mind if I go dance with my friends?" She asked shyly.
"By all means, please. Don't allow me to hold you back."
"It was really nice meeting you." She bounced off toward the dance floor, pausing only a moment to turn back once more. "Your girl is out there. Perhaps closer than you think. Don't lose hope. She's just not a dolphin, but there are plenty of other fish in the sea."
Thomas shook his head, pondering her words. He watched her slip into the crowd, joining others as they threw their hands up, letting the music take hold.
He glanced at his watch. He should stay a little longer, but he could justify taking his leave a little earlier. He had made his appearance, signed autographs, posed for the press and for donors, offered his own substantial donation, and even given a blind date a try. He had enough. He slipped through the winery and out toward the parking lot.
Breathing in the crisp New England air, he put the night behind him. All he needed now was his research and the script he was working on. He turned back one last time as he waited for the valet to bring him his car. The winery glowed under the moonlight, the many happy guests enjoying themselves.
"Oofâ" She collided with him, her cup of iced coffee slipping from her grip and crashing to the ground. "Oh, no!"
"Watch it," he grumbled. His frustrations only grew when he noticed the splatter of coffee covering his shoes and pant leg. "Great." He leaned over, trying to brush off what he could.
She clasped her hands to her heart, her gaze solemnly on the ground as she mourned the loss of her coffee. "You were a good coffee."
"If you'll excuse me." He attempted to keep walking.
"I'm sorry!" She called, following him. "Oh! Ohmygosh! You're you!"
He turned back toward her, hoping to get the requested photo-op over so he could continue on. The skin around his eyes relaxed as his gaze met hers.
"You're really Thomas Hunt," she marveled. "You're amazing!"
"And you're really Alex Spencer." His lip twitched up, and the skin around his eyes wrinkled as she nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"You know who I am?"
"I take note of up-and-coming talent when it is warranted... Your work is adequate."
"Adequate?" She fanned herself, looking away. "Don't make a girl blush so hard."
"Would you prefer satisfactory?" He retorted.
"I'd prefer exceptional, but I know with whom I speak." Her smile widened. "Satisfactory is high praise. Thank you, Mr. Hunt."
"Thomas."
"Thomas," she repeated trying it out.
The moment lingered, and neither moved. He realized that for the first time that night, the passing quiet was not discomforting. The silence had a comforting warmth, somehow both new and familiar.
"Your car, Mr. Hunt." The valet interrupted.
"Thank you. I'll just be a moment."
"You're leaving?" Her voice held an air of disappointment.
"It appears that way, doesn't it?" His feet stayed firmly planted in front of her, not wanting to move.
"Oh." Her brows pulled in as she glanced at his waiting car before turning back to him. "I'm sorry about the coffee. I guess I really shouldn't be texting and walking while drinking coffee and being like three hours late."
"It's okay." He laughed lightly. His lips pressed together, and a curious expression drew across his brow. "Can I ask why you're bringing coffee to a winery? Is not the custom do partake in wine and spirits?"
"Great question. Well, one, coffee is life!" She nodded in agreement with herself.
Her confidence and spirit captivated him. "And two?"
"And two," she hesitated for a moment. "If you find just the right dessert wine, it makes the best coffee sweetener."
His mouth fell agape, perhaps for the first time in his life, having never let himself succumb to such a gesture. "Whâwhy?"
"Why not?" She seemed unphased by his confusion. "Coffee is good. Wine is good. Coffee and wine are doubly good."
He opened his mouth, yet no words came out.
"I mean, it's not all wines. You need to find just the right one. You usually can't go wrong with a nice, bold raspberry wine. Strawberry is nice for something a little lighter and more refreshing."
"Iâ" He shook his head, still at a loss for words. "I suppose I will have to take your word for it."
"Maybe next time I can convince you to give it a try."
"That seems unlikely."
"The coffee/wine combo or that there will be a next time?"
"The coffee/wine combination."
"Okay, good." She chewed the corner of her lip, her cheeks warming under his steady attention.
"As for the next time, that would presume the first time was at its conclusion."
"I thought you were leaving."
"I wasâI am. I'd offer to replace your coffee, but I wouldn't wish to take you from this event. Perhaps a next time is more appropriate."
"All I heard was coffee."
Her effervescent joy pulled him further toward her. "What about the fundraiser?"
"I was filming nearby, and my agent thought I could make an appearance."
"Then you should."
"I don't need to be seen to donate. The money will go to the hospital whether I pose when I write the check or not."
"Indeed."
"So, I heard there was going to be coffee? Is that still happening?"
"I think I would enjoy that."
"Great! Me too." Alex took the first step toward his car. "The coffee mostly, but perhaps time with you would be adequate as well."
"I believe we moved to satisfactory," he reminded her as he opened the door of his black sports car.
"Coffee first, then I will consider revisiting my rating of this evening."
He closed the door behind her, his step light and untroubled. He bit back his growing smile and the thought of how quickly the night had turned, not yet knowing, his life would be forever changed.
A/N #2: I know the prompt is for Thomas x Sienna but I just couldn't do it... I really did try. But Alex! Love finds a way and these two always find each other. It's the rule. I don't make it up!
If you made it this far, thank you so so much. I truly appreciate the support. Likes, comments, and reblogs are especially appreciated.

Viranlly hosts Thanksgiving Dinner.
in partnership with Wines of British Columbia.
ITâS CRUNCH TIME YâALL!
I donât even where time went but here we are now, just over a week before Thanksgiving. The aroma of PSL is in the crisp fall air, the days are getting shorter, and the meals we preppinâ are getting cozier each day. The holidays are upon us and so is the (grape) harvest month.
To celebrate both festivities, Iâve teamed up with the Wines of British Columbia to come up with some fun thanksgiving recipes and of course delicious BC wine pairings to go with them. Iâm skipping the turkey, because letâs be honest, I donât trust myself with a bird that size, nor that I have the space and capacity both physically and mentally to handle a turkey. I want to make sure that this holiday cooking will be as stress-free and as boozy as possible, because we all deserve that kind of holidays.
Please note that these recipes serve 4-6 people.
First thing first, itâs not a dinner party at Viranllyâs without a damn-well-put-together CHARCUTERIE AND CHEESE BOARD. Hereâs the fun part about this board: thereâs no recipe. The trick is you want to make sure you have a balance in flavours, textures and colours (because ya know.. aesthetic).Â
THE MEATÂ : variety of cured meats with different flavour profiles - hot genoa salami, prosciutto, iberico ham, chorizo, and capicollo are always a great start.
THE CHEESE : make sure you have at least hard and soft cheese, everything in between never hurts either - jammy brie or camembert is a crowd pleaser, manchego is delicious, especially when you can find the truffle-y ones. Can never go wrong with parmigianio-reggiano, or a nutty pecorino. Aged cheddar and smoked gouda if you want a little funk. The possibility is honestly, endless.
THE FRUITS AND VEGGIES : grapes and olives (olives are veggies, right? I prefer unpitted Castelvetrano) are staple on my board. Seasonal fruits and veggies always add amazing flavours to the board : pears and figs in the fall, peaches and berries in the summer.
THE EVERYTHING ELSE: honey, hummus, nuts, preserves, bread, crackers, pate, and everything your heart and stomach desire.
I always love to start the night off with a bottle or two of bubbly, something really crisp, citrusy and refreshing. The Howling Bluff Faux Paw has a ton of berry notes with a just a zest of spice, perfect to be enjoyed with everything on this board. Another great bubbly is the Haywire Pink Bub, which, we consumed throughout the summer.Â
The next two dishes are heavily inspired by my friendsâ thanksgiving last year, with a view adjustments to meet what I have readily in my, and most kitchens.
This RADICCHIO AND SQUASH SALADÂ is my definition of the perfect autumn salad: rich and nutty, a hint of bitterness and lots of crunch.
THE VEGGIES:Â
1 medium-sized delicata squash, sliced up to half-an-inch-thick half moons (wow thatâs wordy). Toss them in olive oil, salt and pepper before hitting the 450F preheated oven for 25-35 mins, or until fork tender. Occasionally turn your sheet tray to make sure theyâre cooked evenly, and flip the squash over halfway.Â
Tear up and cut one head of radicchio into quarter, soak them in ice bath for a couple minutes before assembly.Â
Thinly slice one medium-sized asian pear, toss in the juice of half a lemon and season with salt and pepper.Â
THE DRESSING:Â
Toss half a cup (minus a handful for later) of pecan, or walnut, or hazelnuts (really, any nuts you have around -- 2 tablespoon peanut butter work too), 1 small shallot, juice of half an orange and one lemon, 1 tablespoon dijon mustard, a splash of red wine vinegar and 2 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey) into a blender. Blend together and gradually add in a 1/4 cup of olive oil until a silky consistency is achieved. Season with salt and pepper.
THE ASSEMBLY:Â
Spread leftover nuts in a small sheet tray, drizzle with olive oil, salt and one tbsp maple syrup.Put them in the still-hot oven just enough to get them slightly toasty. I tend to forget about them and burn the nuts to the ground, so leave this step until the last 5-10 mins before assembly.Â
Combine squash, radicchio in a big bowl, coat with dressing. Transfer to serving plate.Â
Sprinkle the toasted nuts, and the asian pear allover squash and radicchio.
Shave some parmesan or piave.
Drizzle with some more olive oil and lemon juice, and crack some more black pepper.
I thought this salad can use the brightness and the blossoming freshness of the Orofino orange wine: stunning colour, burst of tropical fruits and elegant floral notes. My mouth is watering as typed this. Â
This SAUSAGE AND CORNBREAD STUFFING changed the stuffing game forever. Honestly, youâd never want to eat another crusty, white bread stuffing for any holidays ever again. Itâs so very indulgent, buttery, and loaded with aromatics. Crispy up top, soft and moist -- yes, moist inside.
THE CORNBREAD:
I am obsessed with the cornbread from Boulevard Kitchen and Oyster Bar. And since this recipe relies quite heavily on the cornbread, trust me, youâd want to use the best cornbread you can find. In this case, Iâve found the winner. Cut up 1 1/2 lb cornbread to 3/4âł pieces and leave them in a 350F oven for 40 mins or so until theyâre dry. Donât worry weâll the moisture back later. Transfer cornbread to a big mixing bowl.
THE STUFFING:
Cook and a lb or so of breakfast sausage in a skillet. Break them apart with a wooden spoon and let brown about 8 minutes. Transfer sausages to a plate.
In the same skillet, leaving the sausage brown bits, add 1/4 cup of butter and cook one diced onion and two stalks of cubed up celery until softened. Add three cloves of chopped garlic and one sliced japaleno, cook for another minute or so. Add 1/2 cup of dry white wine and another 1/4 cup of butter and let the liquid evaporate. Add thyme and chopped sage.
THE ASSEMBLY:
Combine cornbread and stuffing in the mixing bowl, add 2 eggs and 1 1/2 cups of chicken stock. Stir them occasionally until cornbread absorbs most of the liquid.
Lightly butter a cast iron pan, or baking dish and transfer mixture in.
Put the pan in the 350F oven for 40-ish minutes then turn up the heat to 425F for 15-20 mins until the outside is crisp and golden brown.
The VinAmitĂ© Chanson dâAmour is quite a delightful pairing for this dish. The chardonnay in the blend gives that soft minerality while keeping the palate fresh and peachy. Another great option is the Unsworth Pinot Noir: plum-y, dark cherry, a swift hint of earthy herbs - brings out the thyme aroma in the dish.
The last recipe is a simple, choose-your-own-adventure kind of recipe to replace the boring old sweet potato casserole. Itâs a BYOB: Build Your Own Baked sweet potato bar!
THE SWEET POTATO:
Cut 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes into half and coat them in olive oil, salt and pepper. Put them cut side down on a sheet tray and into a 425F oven for 30 minutes or until theyâre fork tender.
THE TOPPINGS:
The toppings, again, can honestly be anything youâre in the mood for buuut these are my three favourites:
Spicy chorizo cooked in vermouth and butter. Itâs as simple as it sounds. In a skillet, heat a tablespoon or so olive oil and bloom chili flakes in it. Slice two links of spanish chorizo and toss into the chili oil. Add vermouth and butter and cook until sauce thickens.Â
Spicy soy garlic tempeh. Dice one slab of tempeh (I used tempea) into 1/2 cm cubes and season with salt and pepper. In a skillet, add one table spoon of oil and add 2 cloves of chopped garlic. Toss the tempe in, and add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon of kecap manis. If you like the heat, add 1-2 sliced up birdseye chili. Serve with cilantro and green onion.
Lobster salad. Cut 2 lobster claws into chunks, add the juice of half a lemon and season with salt and pepper. Add 2 tablespoon of kewpie mayo, one teaspoon of honey, and mix together. Add 2 stalks of thinly sliced celery and top it off with dill. Season with salt and pepper as needed.
THE SAUCE:Â
As simple as sour cream (or plain greek yoghurt), lemon juice, olive oil, grated garlic cloves, seasoned with salt and pepper.
The salad dressing leftover works well too!
THE ASSEMBLY:
Go wild ;)
The wines for this particular dish can be as playful as you want them to be buuuut I decided to go with something a bit more crisp, fruity and floral like the Tantalus Vineyard Riesling especially if you go on the lobster route. Another great option is the Bartier Bros Merlot, which, is a slightly nutty, savoury with a touch more of cherry and dark fruits.Â
Hosting a holiday dinner is a pretty big job and I admit, it can get really stressful but I hope these easy-ish recipes and the wine (I know the wines work) will help you guys through. A MASSIVE thank you to the team at Legends Haul for making my grocery shopping for this dinner SO. MUCH. EASIER.Â
And just another PSA that the holiday is the PERFECT time to support you local wineries and enjoy the delicious wines BC has to offer. And BC has A LOT to offer. So, explore, sip and savour your way throughout this Harvest month. Find more information about BC Harvest Month here.

The Vineyards
Roll Ranch
Ojai Valley Vineyards is proud to source grapes from Roll Ranch, located in Upper Ojai. The vineyard is situated under the dramatic striated bluffs of Topa Topa mountain, and the roots of their vines plunge deep into the poor rocky soil that was once part of those bluffs. We believe that the unique terroir of Roll Ranch results in wines of incredible character and depth.Â
Solomon Hills
The Ojai Valley is home to some of the most picturesque vineyards in California. Nestled among the rolling hills, these vineyards produce some of the state's finest wines. One of the most renowned Ojai Valley vineyards is Solomon Hills. Solomon Hills produces three outstanding wines: Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. These wines are handcrafted from the finest grapes and aged to perfection. The result is a wine that is truly reflective of the Ojai Valley terroir. If you are looking for truly exceptional wine, look no further than Solomon Hills.

If you are looking for a delicious and unique Barbera wine, be sure to try the Ojai Valley Vineyards Barbera. You will not be disappointed.
Kessler-Haak
The picturesque Valley is home to many Ojai wineries, including Kessler-Haak. The Ojai Valley is the perfect place to grow Pinot Noir because of the region's unique microclimate. The Ojai Valley has a long growing season with cool nights, which helps the grapes to retain their natural acidity. The resulting wines are elegant and complex, with a firm structure and beautiful aromatics.Â
Kick On
The Ojai Valley is known for its cooling marine influence, which creates ideal growing conditions for Coastal Riesling. Kick On Farms produces two Riesling wines: a dry style and a late harvest dessert wine. The dry Riesling is crisp and refreshing, with delicate floral aromatics and lively acidity. The late harvest Riesling is intensely flavorful, with notes of honeyed apricot and peach.Â

Flowers Vineyard & Winery, California
Flowers Vineyard & Winery, CA Business, Californian Guest Experience, US Building, Images
Flowers Vineyard & Winery in Healdsburg, CA
Nov 30, 2020
House of Flowers
Design: Walker Warner Architects
Location:Â Healdsburg, California, USA
House of Flowersâ new guest experience breathes new life into a cherished local landmark to become a destina-tion resort-style estate dedicated to the celebration of wine, food, and the natural landscape.
Located minutes from downtown Healdsburg, in the heart of Russian River Valley, and originally built as a winery in the mid-70s, the facilities on this 13.5 acre estate had deteriorated and become outdated. Long known for its rustic charm and authentic connection to nature, the site held promise.
By coinci-dence, Flowers Vineyard & Winery was looking for a venue to showcase their sustainably produced wines within a setting that expressed their nature-based ethos. Opportunity met serendipity to become a perfect union of context and intent, and a home for Flowersâ hospitality house.
The challenge was how to evolve the existing collection of facilities and preserve the natural legacy while ensuring that the venue could meet the expectations of today and become a destination in its own right. âOur approach was deceptively simple,â notes Brooks Walker, principal at Walker Warner Architects. âLet nature dominate and use architecture to frame the experience. Ultimately, itâs about the experience of this place.â
Set within a redwood grove, the existing buildings were largely disconnected from their rich landscape. The strategy was to find ways to reconnect visitors to the landscape while reimagining what was a se-ries of simple industrial buildings. This reinvigorated journey began by investing the site with a sense of orientation.
New pathways lead visitors from the parking area to the updated visitor cen-ter. Previously a warehouse, the new hospitality house provides guests with an orientation to the site and introduces the Flowersâ story.
As with the other existing on-site structures, the 15,700-square-foot hospitality house has been stained a shadowy blackâinspired by the deep shade of the surrounding redwood groveâto help the buildings recede into the site and allow the landscape to become the focus.
Remodeling the existing structures rather than building anew aligned with the Flowersâ commitment to sustainability. The approach, which enabled most of the original structure to be ârecycled,â gave focus to the design efforts, elevating what was already present.
Passive energy strategiesâlow-cost, high-impactâwere maximized and included taking advantage of daylight (skylight and large windows) and shade (exterior wood slats serve as a veil while the surrounding redwood grove offers additional shade). Sustainability is reinforced through several large, monumental functional wood installations made of salvaged logs by artist Evan Shively.
Tucked discretely into the landscape, the transformation involved adding a pop-up element at one end of the single-story hospitality house. The addition knits building with topography, resulting in a multi-level facility that preserves the modest vernacular forms while providing seamless access to the stun-ning views and gardens afforded by the hilltop. The airy hilltop structure serves as a transition to the spacious gardens and provides sheltered seating and amenity spaces, including an outdoor wood-fired oven.
The interiors are bright thanks to bleached cypress siding, completing the yin-yang (dark-light) relationship of outside to inside. âThe architectural expression is understated,â notes Mike McCabe, principal at Walker Warner Architects. âIt isnât about making a statement. Itâs about creating a place that can unify the values that are important to the Flowersâ brandâcelebrating nature and local context with whatâs important to the site and the community.â The desire, note the Flowers owners, was to âcreate an environment where guests feel like they are entering our home, experiencing wines crafted without compromise and shared without pretension.â
Guests can experience a variety of intimate gatherings areas to savor Flowersâ Sonoma Coast wines both inside as well as outside. Upon entering, guests are led to the second floor which includes the sun room, the dining room and living areas as well as more private spaces for VIP guests. The gardens, framed by existing refurbished rammed-earth walls, bring the experience into sharper focus, unfolding as a series of quiet eddies intended for gathering, tasting wine, and celebrating nature.
The site occupies the boundary between the gridded vineyard and agricultural fields of the Russian River and is situated amongst the oak-grassland foothills leading up to the coastal redwood forests that surround Flowersâ estate vineyards on the extreme Sonoma Coast. The terraced gardens feature plant communities indica-tive of each surrounding ecological typology.
New board-formed concrete walls were added to the land-scape as needed, serving as a counterpoint and augmenting the series of exposed archaeologies. Togeth-er, landscape and architecture combine to provide a quiet refuge, a place to celebrate community and friends through the experience of wine.
Quotes below are from Mike McCabe, Principal for Walker Warner Architects âWe designed House of Flowers to be an experience that reveals itself slowly. Each step is choreo-graphed and builds upon the preceding movement to emphasize contrasts and connections. It begins with the entry sequence through a grove of redwoods which leads you to the building with its dark stained exterior skin thatâs nestled in the shadows.
After moving along the path, the main entryâs glow-ing interiors of bald cypress siding serve as a beacon that calls the visitor inside. After being greeted, you walk up the open-framed staircase and as you rise, the gardens and the dramatic views across the vineyards are framed and finally revealed, drawing you out into the landscape.â
âThe regionâs strong, simple vernacular forms served as guide and reference point to help root the archi-tecture to its setting. By visually refining the structures, simplifying the palette and abstracting the tra-ditional vernacular detailing, we attempted to create an architectural expression that honors the local context while making the visitor feel at home and at ease. Ultimately, the intent was to take forms and elements that are comfortable and familiar and use them to make extraordinary spaces for visitors.â
âOver the past 30 years our work at Walker Warner has been primarily focused on the design of homes, spaces that are intimate, comfortable and enduring. We approached the House of Flowers with this point of view as our starting point.
The visitor should feel as though they have arrived at the home of a good friend. Rather than put the focus on the architecture, it is our hope that guests are at ease and their attention is focused on sharing experiences over delicious food and amazing wine in an un-matched context.â
âThe architectural expression is understated. It isnât about making a statement. Itâs about creating a place that can unify the values that are important to the Flowersâ brandâcelebrating nature and local context with whatâs important to the site and the community.â
Quotes below are from Maca Huneeus of Maca Huneeus Design âOur biggest challenge was to convert an already existing building that lacked in character into some-thing appealing that people would want to go visit. There are so many new developments that we thought recycling what was already there and keeping it simple was the way to go. We didnât want to do a massive intimidating building as Healdsburg has always had a down to earth character.â
âBecause of the volume of the red wood building and the unappealing stain of the wood I thought a Scandinavian vibe of black exterior and a lighter interior would translate really well in Healdsburg and address our challenges.â
âI first created inspirational boards that gave us (the architect, landscape and design team) a cohesive narrative for the design. The idea was always to make people feel comfortable as if they were visiting a friendâs home in the countryside. Hence we made a library, a fireplace area, a terrace, a living room, etc. We kept the materials elemental to give it an authentic country vibe (wood, linens, wool, ceramics).â
âThe garden had a beautiful rammed earth structure with a patina so we worked with the shapes of those to make architectural gardens for people to seat and enjoy a glass of wine in an authentic country environment.â
Quotes below are from Thomas Woltz of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects âThe landscape design at the House of Flowers amplifies distinct California landscape ecologies creating a deeply rooted sense of place and a narrative consistent with Flowersâ authentic winemakingâ
âEmbodying distinct and iconic California ecologies, the House of Flowers landscape design bridges the distance between its Russian River Valley location and the vineyards along the bluffs of the Sonoma Coast. The terraces and gardens evoke the terrain where the featured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varie-ties and the story of Flowers Winery itself originate.â
âIn the terraced planting strategies at House of Flowers, the visitor is immersed in distinct California ecologies: Redwood Forest, Oak Woodland, and Chaparral landscapes, with the vineyards and distant ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains on the horizon.â

we buy houses fast Baltimore - We Buy Houses Insider Secrets
youtube
Selling a home in this down economy can seem like a losing battle, but it doesn't have to be. Take the advice that's been put together here for you and you might be surprised just how easy selling your property can be, even when the conditions aren't ideal.
When your real estate agent calls to schedule a showing of your home, pop some cookies in the oven before prospective buyers arrive. The smell of freshly baked cookies is better than any air freshener and this homey smell can remind buyers of fond memories in their childhood home, encouraging them to think of the house you are selling as their new home.
When your property is inspected, you should be present. If you have an inspector that tells you that you need not be present, a red flag should go up. The advantages to being present are that you know the inspection is thorough and it is a good time to learn about your investment.
Always keep track of information that might be useful to prospective buyers. You should compile a list of any renovations or remodeling that was done on the home, along with the contractors used to complete the work. This allows prospective buyers to appreciate the fact that you took an active role in the upkeep of your home.
Landlords should always screen their tenants. Check your tenant's credit, ask for references, and do a criminal background check. This will help you to know the people who are living in your properties, and give you an idea of their level of trustworthiness. Forgoing the background check might save a little time, but in the long run it can cost you more than the time savings is worth.
Do not be afraid to speak up for yourself when you feel that your real estate agent is not giving your home enough attention. The agent is like your employee and should be receptive to your needs. In order to get your house sold quickly, the agent should give proper attention to it and the value of your property should not make a difference.
If you bought your home several years ago you probably financed somewhere between five and six percent interest. Now might be a good time to consider refinancing. With the real estate market as bad as it is today, finance rates are hovering around three percent. This will save you thousands of dollars over the long haul.
If you are having trouble selling your house, try a few quick Feng Shui fixes. Clearing clutter outside and in is essential to allowing good energy to flow. It will present a welcoming feeling to any prospective buyer. Attract buyers to your home by painting the front door a powerful China red.
While many people are trying to save a few dollars where they can, don't skimp when it comes to selling your house. Hiring a real estate agent will help you get your house sold faster, and for a better price. These people are trained in what they are doing, so trust that they will help you.
As you can see, there are many things that you can do to prepare for the sale of your real estate. The key is to start planning for it early. Get advice, learn all that you can, and apply your knowledge to your plan. If you do that, you will be ready when the time comes.

Getting to Know Happy Canyon, One of Southern Californiaâs Tiniest AVAs
There are some people who would rather you not know about Happy Canyon â and when you drive down its roads, which wind past horse pastures and rolling hills covered in grapevines, itâs easy to understand why. This tiny, isolated American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the easternmost part of the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County is very much an unspoiled paradise. And so far, the locals have succeeded in blocking the canyon from having tasting rooms, which significantly limits the exposure of its wineries â but also keeps tourism and traffic to a minimum.
Perhaps itâs the right move, since if the Bordeaux-style wines coming out of Happy Canyon were better known, they would likely be in high demand, and enthusiasts would be pouring into the area clamoring to taste them.
An Emerging Subregion
The Santa Ynez Valley, overall, doesnât get the attention it deserves, but if you know any of the wines from its four sub-AVAs, you probably know the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir coming out of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, in the western part of the valley, where cool Pacific breezes help create an ideal microclimate for those grapes.
On the other side of the valley, Happy Canyon is hot. Temperatures regularly top 100 degrees on summer days, and drop dramatically at night, down 50 or 60 degrees, even in July and August. That diurnal shift is ideal for the Bordeaux varieties â Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc â that are commonly grown there. The soils are rocky mixtures of sand, gravel, and clay that are rich with minerals and tend to yield concentrated wines.

So why donât you know about Happy Canyonâs wines yet?
Two reasons. First, the AVA was only established in 2009 (though winemakers have sought fruit from the area since its first vintage in 2001). Second, the wineries are mostly marketed through word of mouth â and through some tasting rooms in Santa Barbara. Because visibility is limited, distribution tends to stay in Southern California and the Central Coast.
Key Grapes, Vineyards, and Wineries
âSanta Barbara County is probably one of the most beautiful spots in wine country all over the world. People see it in pictures and you just canât get it until you get here,â says Sean Pitts, executive winemaker and president of Happy Canyon Vineyards. âItâs still a bit of a hidden gem, but weâre still growing in terms of people knowing where we are.â
Adjacent to Grimmâs Bluff Vineyard, Happy Canyon Vineyards is located on Piocho Ranch, which is also home to polo fields and the Piocho polo team. The winery started releasing its own wines in 2010, focusing exclusively on estate-grown Bordeaux-style red and white blends under the Piocho label and limited-run blends under its Barrack Family Estate label. Its 2016 Piocho Red Blend is earthy with notes of raspberry, black cherry, plum, cedar, and chocolate, and is easily drinkable now â though if you can hold onto it for a few years (even up to 10 years), itâll be even better. The Barrack Ten-Goal is 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with small percentages of Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec in the blend. Itâs so rich and intensely flavored, it could be mistaken for a Napa Valley release.
Star Lane Vineyard, which is situated next to the Vogelzang and Jack McGinley vineyards, has 780 acres â the entire eastern border of the valley â and 145 of them are planted with grapes in vineyards surrounded by wild sage and rosemary. âThatâs what Happy Canyon tastes like to me,â says Star Laneâs California sales manager, Tracy Witkin. âYou can taste it in the wine.â
Tyler Thomas, Star Laneâs winemaker, makes the wines for both Star Lane and its sister label Dierberg with what Witkin calls a âgranular scientific approach.â For example, he ferments the grapes row by row rather than block by block in an effort to capture the unique expressions in each part of the vineyard, and then he blends those individual blocks of grapes into stellar Cabs and Pinots. âIn one block, from one side to the other side, you can have totally different soil composition,â Witkin explains. âEven in the same block, you canât say, âThis block tastes like this.ââ
Thomasâs meticulous cultivation is as much a scientific experiment to gain a deep understanding of Star Laneâs terroir as it is a quest to make the best possible wines. âHe wants to know why,â Witkin says. âHeâs constantly trying to figure out why.â Thomas also uses open-top fermentation for the Pinot Noir, she notes, and separate wine presses for reds and whites.

Another major player in Happy Canyon is Grassini Family Vineyards, founded by Larry and Sharon Grassini. They converted their land to vineyards in 2002 and now produce 5,000 cases annually from 35 acres of grapes â primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Grassini wines tend to have a drier style, big fruit, and mellow complexity, which, the Grassinis say, reflects Larryâs Italian heritage.
The 2016 Articondo Red Blend, named after Larryâs grandfather, is 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 percent Petit Verdot, and 15 percent Cabernet Franc. It has savory, herbaceous notes with hints of lavender and spice. âWhen we started planting [grapes], no one thought you could plant Cabernet in Santa Barbara County,â says Jared Kent, Grassiniâs hospitality manager. âWe definitely started showing people that not only can you grow Cabernet out here, you can grow beautiful Cabernet.â
Katie Grassini, the wineryâs CEO, explains that Happy Canyon became known for Sauvignon Blanc early on. âIt found its footing and knew what it was doing,â she says, adding that âthe Cabernet took a little longer for the roots to get in there and the vines to mature, and for the winemakers to figure out what they were doing with it.â
A good example of a Happy Canyon Cabernet, says Kent, is Grassiniâs 2015 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, which is blended with 8 percent Petit Verdot and 2 percent Cabernet Franc. âYou get your big body, you get your long finish, but itâs slightly softer than other California Cabernets,â he says. âItâs not the aggressive, big, full Cabernet youâre thinking when you get California Cab.â
Grassini Family Vineyards, started in 2002, produces 5,000 cases of wine from 35 acres of grapes each year. Photo courtesy of Julie Tremaine
More traditional California Cabernets can be found across the road at Crown Point Vineyards, which produces only two releases annually: a Cabernet Sauvignon and an Estate Selection Bordeaux blend. Crown Pointâs 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon in particular has been highly lauded.
âI love great wine,â says Crown Pointâs owner, Roger Bower. âI thought it would be a great challenge to see if I could make one.â Bower and his French team, winemaker Simon Faury, who studied viticulture at the University of Bordeaux, and consulting winemaker Philippe Melka, a native of Bordeaux who is also a geologist, focus their efforts on making the finest reds possible from Crown Pointâs terroir. âThis place is a diamond in the rough,â says Bower. âItâs the only place in Santa Barbara County we can do it, because itâs the warmest.â
Crown Point produces approximately 2,000 cases of each wine annually. Unlike other wineries that will tier their releases to make sure thereâs a comfortable price point for everyone, Crown Point prices all its wines at $150 a bottle. It may be expensive, but it still feels like a steal. A bottle like the 2015 Estate Selection â made with 71 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 9 percent Cabernet Franc, 9 percent Petit Verdot, 9 percent Malbec, and 2 percent Merlot â could easily cost four times as much in Napa.
Looking Ahead
There is such scale and variety coming out Happy Canyon, a place with just under 24,000 acres in its entirety. Maybe because of that size, or because the AVA is so off the radar, discovering these wines feels like an adventure. (The area is so much off the beaten path that it was a haven for bootleggers during Prohibition â hence the name Happy Canyon, because people would go there to âget happy.â)
Pitts from Happy Canyon Vineyards points out that the wines from this AVA arenât as âripe and rich as Napa Valleyâ or as âOld World and earthyâ as Bordeaux, but he thinks they âmaintain this beautiful sweet spot right in between the two. We are our terroir.â
âLuckily enough,â he says, âthese vines make very consistent, wonderful wines. I think all the wines coming out of Happy Canyon are fantastic. We just all put our own little spin and style on it.â

Our next main stops were in Oregon, but it was too much to drive there from Napa Valley in one go, so we had decided on Anderson to spend the night.
As the traffic northbound from Napa was one huge traffic jam, we had to return the same way as we came into Napa Valley and head back via the I-80, taking the I-505 at Vacaville before merging onto the I-5.
The 180 mile / 290 kilometer ride through Californiaâs Central Valley, a very sparsely populated agricultural area, didnât take very long. Tourist always say that The Netherlands are so âflatâ, but this vast area had an almost alienating emptiness. The only changes were the crops: tomatoes, olives, grains and pistachioâs.
This alienation was enhanced by the fact that after El Rio Villa you enter The County of Yolo. They numbered county roads rather them give them âproperâ names: the NorthâSouth roads increase west to east from 41 to 117 and the EastâWest roads increase north to south from 1 to 38A, and then from 151 to 161. Consequently, the exit signs just mention âRoad 31â  without giving a clue where youâd actually be going. As soon as you hit the Yolo and Colusa County line near Hershey, you go back to normal with the Yolo County Line Road (no joke!).
Due the blistering heat â well over 104F / 40C en route â it wasnât really sensible to stay out of the car for a prolonged period of time. Therefore, not much was done except a short stroll along the main street of Red Bluff and to the bridge over the Sacramento river.
Lunch was enjoyed at the local outlet of the originally Redding-based From the Hearth Bakery & Café (638 Washington St). They had delicious panini: the Vegetarian (fresh grilled veggies, pesto and gouda), the Caprese (tomato, mozzarella, fresh basil and balsamic vinegar) as was the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich (sliced tri-tip with provolone, onions and bell peppers on a French roll).
We combined them with a couple of thirst-quenching beers from Eurekaâs Lost Coast Brewery. We tried their Great White, a Belgian-style unfiltered white beer with a hint of citrus and coriander, as well as the crisp Tangerine Wheat beer that benefits from the unusual but very refreshing tangerine citrus kick. Too bad that we didnât come across Lost Coast when we stayed in EurekaâŠ
After arrival at the Gaia Hotel & Spa in Anderson, we unpacked and the whole afternoon was spent hanging at the swimming pool and sitting on the patio of our room sipping our very nice Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay, trying to avoid that it warmed up too soon đ
Dinner was at Woodside Grill, the hotelâs restaurant, which was very nice. We started off with some laughter as the kids were tricked into believing that the warm bread actually came with a scoop of ice cream (which of course was whipped butter) đ.
Chantal and I ordered the Mushroom Encrusted Brie (mushroom duxelles crusted brie drizzled with a balsamic reduction served over a toasted crostini with a chipotle basil pesto) as a starter.
As main course, Chantal opted for the Spinach Salad (Baby spinach, feta cheese, dried cranberries, grilled balsamic red onions and a poppy-seed dressing). The kids had their staple choice of Mac ânâ Cheese (Cavatappi pasta in a three cheese sauce topped with fresh diced tomatoes, green onions and fried onion straws with a steak). Apparently, Napa wasnât out of my system yet, as I chose their absolutely amazing Cabernet Burger (a 1/2 lb. Braveheart certified Black Angus hamburger, infused with a special Cabernet Sauvignon reduction, applewood smoked bacon, Point Reyes bleu cheese and grilled balsamic onions on a sesame seed bun served with garlic fries. One of the most intensly flavoured burgers I ever had!!
We paired with it a Cabernet of course⊠During our road trip we tried several wines from Michael David Winery hailing from Lodi in Central California.  We tried their Incognito Red, the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Red blend from their Freakshow range as well as the Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from their Earthquake range. All very pleasant, full-bodied and black fruit focussed wines that are great value for money (and quite fun to look at too).
Around the World â Pacific Northwest USA (part 14) â Napa â Anderson, California Our next main stops were in Oregon, but it was too much to drive there from Napa Valley in one go, so we had decided on Anderson to spend the night.

From an irreverent Lower East Side punk outfit to bona fide international ambassadors of New York cool, Blondie will forever be synonymous with that punk spirit that lives somewhere in all of us. Comprised of singer-songwriter Debbie Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke, and long-time band members bassist Leigh Foxx, guitarist Tommy Kessler and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen, Blondie's chart-topping success, fearless spirit and rare longevity led to an induction into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, a NME Godlike Genius Award in 2014, a Q Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2016, and more than 40 million albums sold worldwide to date. Â Debbie's persona and the band's boundary-pushing pop have shaped the look and sound of many chart-topping female artists who followed in the last three decades. Â And their newest album, Pollinator (out May 5th via BMG), delves even deeper into this idea: inspiration from Blondie's action-packed, cross-pollinating past shaping the sound of our collective future.
Garbage is Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig. After forming in Madison, WI, Garbage released their self-titled debut album in 1995. The band's unique sound and provocative visual aesthetic, inspired massive worldwide attention and success. Their follow up album, Version 2.0, released in 1998, topped charts all over the world and garnered multiple Grammy Award nominations including Album Of The Year. Garbage went on to release two more albums: 2001's Beautiful Garbage and 2005's Bleed Like Me, the latter of which earned the band its highest chart position with a No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. After a 7-year hiatus, the band released their fifth studio album Not Your Kind of People in 2012 on their independent record label, STUNVOLUME. The album was named one of Rolling Stone magazine's Top 50 Albums of 2012 and was hailed as the "alternative to everything," by Pitchfork. Garbage has sold over 15 million albums worldwide and performed in over thirty-five countries. In 2015, the band celebrated its 20th anniversary with their SOLD OUT '20 Years Queer' world tour and the release of a special 20th anniversary edition of their debut album, re-mastered and featuring previously unreleased material. Last year, Garbage released Strange Little Birds, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums chart, and arrived at No. 14 overall on the Billboard 200 chart. This summer, Garbage will be releasing an autobiographical coffee table book, This Is The Noise That Keeps Me Awake. Looking to take a Missouri road trip? Check out these destinations
ST. LOUIS â Summer travel plans have changed for many families due to the pandemic. It has some trying to figure out what close-to-home options there are this year.
The Missouri Department of Tourism shared some road trip stops from across the state. They encourage visitors to check on an attractionâs website or social media to check on hours or operations and read about requirements related to COVID-19. Some of Missouriâs state parks have limited facilities and services.
Highway 36 â The Way of American Genius stretching across the northern part of Missouri, The Way of American Genius connects towns, individuals, and events that embody American innovation. Locations â and their claim to fame â along the route include:
Hannibal: Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), best known for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, spent his boyhood years in Hannibal. Take a riverboat ride on the Mississippi and learn more about Twain at museums such as the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, shows and other attractions including Mark Twain Cave â featured in five of Twainâs novels. Samuel Clemensâ signature was recently discovered â and authenticated â on the wall of the cave.
Kirksville: Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, founded osteopathic medicine in 1974. Today, there are more than 30 accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine in the U.S. and more than 70,000 doctors of osteopathic medicine worldwide. Learn about Still at the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine.
Marceline: As a boy, Walt Disney spent several years in Marceline. He modeled Main Street USA at his Disney theme parks after Marcelineâs downtown area. Learn more about Disney at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum.
Chillicothe: The small town is known as The Home of Sliced Bread. In 1928, the Chillicothe Banking Company was the first company in the world to sell commercially sliced bread. See the machine invented by Otto Rohwedder â on loan from the Smithsonian. The community has a Sliced Bread Festival every July.
St. Joseph: Visit the birthplace of the Pony Express, the mail relay system designed to deliver correspondence to the west in the fastest way possible.
Highway 19 â Wine and Rivers:
Begin a road trip down Highway 19 in historic Missouri wine country (about 75 miles east of St. Louis) and travel south into an area crisscrossed by crystal-clear rivers perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. The route runs through the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first national park area in the United States to protect a river system, and a section of the Mark Twain National Forest.
Hermann â Located in the heart of Missouriâs historic wine region, Hermann is a charming small town located on the Missouri River. Historic brick buildings line the downtown, offering an array of dining and shopping, including the Hermann Wurst Haus where you can find freshly made sausages and other German specialties. The Hermann Wine Trail includes the award-winning Stone Hill Winery (prior to Prohibition, it was the second-largest winery in the United States) and 10 other wineries, many located along the Missouri River. The town offers a number of lodging options including bed and breakfast inns and âtreehouses.â
Ozark National Scenic Riverways â The Jacks Fork and Current rivers make up this nationally-protected area where visitors enjoy the lush green forests and rock bluffs while they canoe, kayak or raft down the sparkling rivers. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways was the countryâs first national park area to protect a river system.
Springs: Some of Missouriâs most beautiful natural springs are located just minutes from Highway 19. Near the town of Eminence, picturesque Alley Mill â which now operates as a museum â sits alongside the teal-colored waters of Alley Spring. Short hikes take you the brilliant blue water of Round Spring and Blue Spring, one of the deepest springs in the United States.
Near Alton: Take a longer hike through the Ozark terrain to reach Greer Spring, the Stateâs second-largest spring, churning out more than 200 million gallons of water a day.
Highway 21 â Ozark Beauty and History
Highway 21, running southwest out of St. Louis, takes you straight into the rugged beauty of the Ozark Mountains, some of the oldest mountains in the United States. Just minutes from the highway, youâll find some of Missouriâs most interesting natural attractions. Visit in the spring and youâll be treated to forest views filled with blooming Red Bud and Dogwood trees. In the autumn months, the hillsides are brilliant with fall color.
