Having FINALLY finished Side Order as compensation for not being able to play Grand Fest anymore (cries) and taking into account the official lyrics for Suffer No Fools and Three Wishes (cries again, harder this time), I have to say I could not be happier at how blatant theyve made it that yes, Pearl and Marina are gay, yes, they always have been, and yes, they are being gay right now. Marina's jump-cuddle-hug in OE? Gay. Pearl's declaration of love on live television after the Final Fest? Gay. Marina's anime drawings of Pearl? Gay. Pearl? Gay. Marina? Gay. These - look at me - these two cephalopods?? Gay!! 🏳️‍🌈⁉️👍🗣

And I gotta say, confirmed obvious yuri does hit different, especially when you were already invested in the unconfirmed version that could've been supposed to be interpreted as friendship. The way they throw themselves after each other in SO, their elevator dialogue, Marina's laptop desktop picture being of Pearl, her diaries talking about their relationship as an actual relationship (haven't gotten all of them yet, excited for more gay shenanigans in there), their performance at the Grand Festival, all of this is so so nice to see. Their lyrics to Three Wishes still make me cry with how heartfelt they are.

While the Squid Sisters sing about their journey so far, and Deep Cut about their journey that lies ahead, Pearl and Marina, especially in their chorus, sing about how they complete each other, and that being together "makes today/every day perfect", which is why they don't need to dream of another time; They have each other right now. "My north star", "Overlapping cycles, binary stardom", I mean come ON. Lesbians try to not write poetry about each other that would make William Shakespeare jealous challenge, difficulty impossible.

I just have to scream about it somewhere how fucking happy and emotional these two fictional gay people make me, whether in songs like We're So Back or Three Wishes, in cutscenes, in dialogue, or in hidden text that rewards you for completing a very fun DLC again. And their entire Grand Fest appearance, interlocking hands in the middle of the cover art, proud, open, fucking LESBIANS. Raaaaah Off the Hook you will always be peak ‼️‼️‼️🔥🔥🔥

Insane raaaaah they’re doing this part justice. Honestly it was even better than the game because they focused on the resistance fighters and some of the other S and B models. We really have got a lot of the resistance characters in this anime which I love. Makes all these events hit a lot harder and makes Lily even more bad ass. I got some order 66 flashbacks seeing the B models all turn on their S counterparts. Those were brutal scenes, kinda want a 12B spin off now though lmao.

Think the commander is starting to be suspicious of the humans on the moon too. Even she was taken aback when they gave them access to the orbital lasers and other weapons.

Speaking of which, animation and sound design during the big crane fights, aerial battles and lazer scenes were awesome! Great job A-1

THE SANDWICH, THE FRICKING SANDWICH, I KNOW RIGHT!! The bicorn chapter. THE BICORN CHAPTER I STG. I love it so much, it really is the climax of their arc together. I keep alluding to it latelu but I think you’ll like the analysis I’m working on rn finally properly dissecting their complementary character arcs. Btw funnily enough I myself only remembered about the sandwich/realized what it meant when reading a russian marchil fic lol 🫶 I looove how "This sweetness in my meal isn’t what I expected but it isn’t so bad, shouldn’t have looked down upon the idea" is the final metaphorical comment of the chapter and thus their arc I looove how the sweetness is optimism, it’s nice things happening in his life and him being surprised pikachu face about it, it’s like Puckpatti and Marcille taking on life with a glass half full approach, and I love how it’s also her. Kui is genuinely such a storytelling genius.

You know, sometimes I wonder like "Ok but did Kui intend marchil, on some level maybe perhaps………. Nahhhh, pshhh, haha." And then I remember how him liking blondes is apparently important and relevant (bc Kui keeps emphasizing on it) and how he sees her as if she has anime sparkles around her hair as per his shapeshifter of her, and I remember- UGH I remember like all the marchil crumbs ever and how narratively important they were to each other and all the times he risked his life for her specifically and blushed and teased (my god he has a blushing tsundere Marcille surrounded with sparkles in his head of what he thinks happens when he teases her my GOD). I’m like, Kui did you know what you were doing. KUI. KUI IS HE CANONICALLY ATTRACTED TO HER. IS THERE SOMETHING THERE.

So I greatly enjoy drawing them both. I cant draw anthros all that well and I have more fun drawing distinct human heads, sooooo here's that. I wanted them to be vaguely cats tho, which is why they have the tails and Vik has such big teefers

Anyways, this one was an adorable idea my partner and I had where Mordecai and Viktor spend time reading together where it's just utterly silent bc they're both exhausted and need the silence, but they still wanna be around each other. I think they work since they'd both benefit from a few quiet hours together where they just hang out (quality time love language aka me projecting).

disorganized thoughts on fionna and cake eps 5 and 6

(Spoilers!!)

ok ive only seen the eps once each and im going off of memory so a lot of this is probably gonna be paraphrased and mixed up but whatever . also this post is really fucking long lol sorry

-OK FIRST OFF THESE WERE SO GOOD RAAAAAH

-obviously we are in the farmworld, not surprised but very happy!!!

-also not very surprised fionna and cake immediately went along with simon’s plan

-the whole time they were talking about where to find a crown i was like lol. simon don’t look behind you

-cake bringing fionna a dead rat was really funny

-the versucci gag or whatever was also really good

-but what made me die was fionna talking abt how she’s played a lot of post apocalyptic rpgs and then it pans over to “man who has actually lived through the apocalypse”

-was really cool to see how the farmworld has developed after what happened with ice finn, i think it’s interesting how they’re more technologically advanced since the first time an ice age happened in this world they pretty much reverted to medieval times (does that make sense. you know what i mean)

-i was SO convinced jay was farmworld finn’s little sibling so when he said dad my heart stopped

-the name jay didn’t immediately click until bonnie was revealed to be one of his other kid’s name and i was like HOLY SHIT PUHOY???

-veeeery interesting since assumingely golb destroyed/erased the pillow world

-i guess you could just chalk it up to finn would have named his kids the same thing in any universe?

-but i mean speaking of his kids GOD he got busy with huntress wizard

-the juxtaposition between gumball talking about his creations to fionna fighting the fucked up versions of them was really cool

-i hope gumball doesn’t take what the lemoncarbs said to heart . they’re just like that

-ok so. I was honestly more shocked that fionna kissed (a version of) simon than him disintegrating seconds after lmaooooo

-i have to wonder why he immediately died here when in betty (the episode) he was dying relatively slowly without the crown’s magic

-ive been writing down a bunch of crack theories and the first thing ive gotten right was the winter king transferring his craziness to pb lol lets goooo

-i was thinking that simon might’ve transferred it himself but then i was like nooo he wouldn’t do that….apparently he would do that

Gundam Unicorn OVA 1: Day of the Unicorn

I enjoyed this quite a lot.

Banagher is a responsible father. Stick a "baby on board" decal on the back of his work mech.

I think it's probably pretty rare for fans who don't know Japanese to read the Unicorn novels before watching the anime. They weren't even fully translated until well after the anime finished airing. Even nowadays, when we have the full fan TL available, I doubt many people decide "Yes, I will read an edited machine translation of ten light novels, even though I know the series has been adapted into seven anime episodes of movie length and quality and I have never watched them". It was novel-only character information that first caught my interest, though, so I get to do it the unusual way.

Will this make a difference in my perception of the anime? Who knows. I don't actually know much about what fan reception was like back in 2010-2014, in either the west or Japan.

Thoughts below.

I'll start with complaints first, since I have only one:

👎 Removed all textual and visual indication of Banagher being multiracial / Syam being Middle Eastern.

Why did they do this. I was genuinely surprised and disappointed to see this from Gundam, since the franchise has a history of diverse casts all the way back to 1979. Gundam 00 would have finished airing just a year before this came out, and that had two brown-skinned Middle Eastern protagonists. Did they hit a quota or something?

Things I really liked:

👍 Everything is beautiful.

It's so pretty. The way characters and expressions are drawn is pretty. The mechs are pretty. The death lasers and the resulting explosions are pretty.

The backgrounds! Ship interiors, industrial sites, the signs and posters in the city. It's all gorgeous.

👍 Robot Status: Wow, Cool

I looove the design of the cockpits and UI. I'd already seen the same setup used in Hathaway's Flash, but it’s not any less impressive here. It's so cool. It's SO cool. I love watching the little markers for the funnels pop up.

The mixing of 3D and 2D for complex scenes is pretty seamless, except for the bit at the very end where the Unicorn transforms. My suspension of disbelief can easily survive a few seconds of recognizable CGI.

God, the robots are cool. I love seeing the Kshatriya in motion.

👍Great use of one of my favourite little Gundam things: characters moving around in zero / reduced gravity.

There are some real weird shots in this one.

I love specialized architecture and infrastructure for low gravity environments! I love characters who are accustomed to living in space being strangely indifferent to the concept of up and down! I love deliberately confusing or unsettling camera angles! Raaaaah!!!

It's good music.

The part of the score where the violins start going sour while Cardeas threatens Banagher, until it's just an ugly atonal mess? Love that.

I like that spooky echo sound they use sometimes-- I'm genuinely not sure whether it's built into the music tracks or an added sound effect? I interpreted it at first as an indication of Newtype Shenanigans, but it also seemed to show up in other moments that were dramatic or had a lot of deaths. Though I suppose a lot of people dying is something newtypes would pick up, so maybe it still is meant to represent that. I don't know. The sound is cool.

Some miscellaneous commentary, mostly but not exclusively about comparisons the novels:

Things move more quickly in the OVA than the novels, and the audience knows less about the characters. This is an inherent difference of medium and format. We spend less time inside the characters' heads, and this can give a very different first impression-- particularly of Banagher as the protagonist.

My impression of OVA Banagher is that he's a daydreamer, longing for something he can't place. Novel Banagher can also be described this way, but at least to me he felt more worn down and resigned in his detachment. The anime version has more of a wistful, almost romantic vibe. Maybe it's just those big ol' eyes.

Once he's seen the Unicorn, OVA Banagher has some kind of switch flip in his brain. From that point on, as soon as he gets an impulse, he is GOING. We aren't privy to any of his internal deliberation, just the snap decisions as they happen. He seems a lot more confident without his internal thoughts narrating everything, but also less socially aware.

Here's an actual change for you: in the OVA, Banagher actively volunteers to help Audrey get to the colony builder when she starts to leave. In the novel, she directly asks for his help-- and he says no!

He felt a pull to help when he saw she was in danger, but after they crashed he could hear police sirens. He didn't want to get in any more trouble after his little stunt, so she called him spineless and ran off. He has a whole little arc where he tries to just go back to school like nothing happened until Marida shows up and literally twists his arm. The guilt of ratting Audrey out is the push that makes him change his mind and go after her.

Some of the scenes this change skips were cute, but getting more of Banagher hanging out with Mineva when they aren't being actively chased is nice. It's also just a smartly economical use of time. I do think the change makes Banagher feel meaningfully different, though.

I was fond of him being a little more conflicted and moody, but there's also something really funny about a guy who so single-mindedly barrels into situations. He really does seem supernaturally compelled.

Just a laser guided missile of a boy. Hyperfocus: maximum.

Knowing a bit less about characters like Audrey and Marida works very well. We know about as much as Banagher.

Audrey is obviously someone important, but they don't even say the word "princess" until the VERY end-- like four minutes left on the runtime. They never drop her real name. We get all that through narration long before this in the novels (as well as a lot more direct discussion of the Sleeves and Zeon in general).

We get ZERO interiority or backstory for Riddhe in this first one. His first introduction is saving Audrey and Banagher's friends. They pointedly show you his little airplane charm with a special sound effect for like, two seconds maybe, so quickly you can barely process what it is. Very interesting.

We also know less about Banagher's mom… not necessarily a LOT less, but enough to feel like she's being kept a mystery.

Trust the process, Banagher.

This whole scene-- especially the face journey Banagher goes through-- is lovely.

Marida's civilian disguise is better in this version. Like, in-universe, I mean.
