A/n: this is for me and the three other Muslim OP fans here just vibing 😂 cultural notes at the bottom in case you didn't know/just curious about some of the terms here.

Luffy 

Absolutely does not get it, I think he has a heart attack hearing the words “no food or water” and does not listen to anything else after. 

“WHY CANT WE EAAAAT??? WHAT????” 

Blows his mind you would do this… he’s trying his best, poor guy <3

I GOTTA STRESS HE IS TRYING- HE WANTS TO DO THIS WITH YOU 

But you know, he’s Luffy, so that means after an hour or two he gives up and just raids the kitchen. 

Task failed but you know he’ll always stay up late for iftar and wake up early for suhur. 

Sanji 

He at first thought you were trying to- god forbid- starve yourself or diet and nearly screamed. 

When you explain the reasoning, he’s touched and wants to support you! So that means he’s absolutely doing everything he can to make sure you’re hydrated and getting all the nutrients you can get whenever you can. 

He makes you a completely separate dish from the others while you’re working or resting (so your food is fresh and ready when you break your fast!). 

Self-indulgent thought he’s so so so on top of things when it comes to your meals in general, he will never put wine or meat in your meals, and he makes to sure clean the area and use separate pans for when he cooks your meals. Absolutely refuses to give you anything that goes against your beliefs (I need him in my life). 

Please, he’s buying you dates and getting up with you to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eating right. Sleep schedule be damned, he’s not messing around with your health!!!!

Crocodile 

Now, he’s one of the few who actually knows what Ramadan is- he’s made Alabasta his “home” for a while and has participated in many celebrations or events to keep up appearances.

He kinda just humors you at first like “yeah, yeah, go be spiritual or whatever” and chuckles at you with that sexy voice of his. 

But he sees how dedicated you are, maybe sees you reading or praying and okay… his heart kinda melts. He’s never really believed in such things, not finding it useful for him, but seeing you just kinda makes him curious. 

Easily can fast alongside you, he just doesn’t make a big deal of it and insists that it’s simply due to him ‘not feeling hungry’ or ‘finding it boring to eat alone’ (sure, sure you big tsun). 

Makes sure your chefs are giving you only the best and freshest foods possible- he’s especially harsh about the food when it comes to Ramadan. 

I’m trying so hard not to inject my MENA!Croc addled brain into this piece so so hard I AM TRYING OKAY GUYS 

But can you imagine him going to the mosque with you or listening to you discuss or read the Quran and he’s just playing it cool but his eyes are so drawn to you and he wonders if you’re an angel and that he really, really does not deserve someone like you because he’s done so many bad things and wheeeeeeze-

Robin 

She’s an elegant and refined woman, one who will 100% want to be involved in your traditions. 

She finds your beliefs fascinating and takes it upon herself to join you in your Ramadan. 

It took her a bit of getting used to, but after a few days, it quickly grew on her. 

Robin likes having tea with you during suhur, alongside a few fresh fruits Sanji had gotten. Light meals are best for her and she prefers to enjoy your company and take it easy before the dawn. 

She likes to keep track of the days and times of when you two begin and break your fasts- she’ll make sure to keep note of the Shawwal moon so you two (and the rest of the crew) can celebrate the Eid together!

Since it’s a time of reflection, Robin decides to sit quietly and talk about her feelings and experiences with you. She did have some reservations and guilt that she was too “demonic” to celebrate this with you, but through your encouragement, she felt better and continued it alongside you. 

Oh, she loves getting the henna done, too. She makes sure to have lots of flowers on her arms and is in love with the patterns.

Cultural Notes: 

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, which is based on the lunar cycle- hence why you’ll often see debates on when Ramadan starts/ends or why it begins about a week or two earlier than before, since the lunar calendar is shorter than the solar calendar (or Gregorian, the one we normally use). 

Muslims fast for a month from dawn until sunset (there are restrictions of course) so no water or food from that time. 

Sahur/Suhur/Suhoor: the meal you eat before the dawn comes. 

Iftar: the meal you eat to break your fast at sunset. 

Shawwal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, so Ramadan ends when you see the Shawwal moon that starts a new month. 

Eid: the big celebration that marks the end of Ramadan. Usually you go do a special prayer or have a big gathering with your family and enjoy yourselves.

i want to expand on what Ayesha might mean when she says being queer and Muslim is complicated as a queer Muslim myself bc I’ve seen some people not quite hit the nail on the head.

first is that it is not a universal opinion among Muslims that having a gay romantic or sexual partnership is a sin. that depends on how you interpret the story of Lut alayhi salam, which most schools of thought have extrapolated to be about gay relationships. It might be the mainstream view, but that does not give it religious or scholarly credibility per se. the Quran itself says nothing negative about queerness.

second is that Islam is not unique in being manipulated and twisted as an excuse for homophobia. that has happened in so many cultures and religions and societies. nothing specific about the Quran actually says that being gay is a sin/gay people should be killed etc (just to be clear the people who say that are making it up to validate their homophobic violence. you know how that goes)

really, Ayesha hits the nail on the head when she talks about social relationships. when you’re a minority, if the sheikh or imam or the community is homophobic you can’t just pick up and go somewhere else. this is your community, and you experience so many beautiful things with them. we pray shoulder to shoulder. you aren’t supposed to ignore or shun people. in Islam we have many obligations that are fulfilled through community (giving charity, walking to the masjid, praying in congregation, celebrating eid). this is who you celebrate with, who you mourn with, who you go to for guidance and advice.

the other complicating factor is that many Muslim women observe hijab (wearing a headscarf, physical separation of men and women) in part to create a space where they can exist without being sexualized or even talking about sexuality at all. the expectation is that when you make wudhu, change clothes, etc in front of other women that they aren’t sexualizing you. but if you are attracted to women, even when you lower your gaze and don’t notice their appearances, it feels like an invasion of their privacy. being a lesbian Muslim involves a degree of questioning where you fit into your community, what spaces are and aren’t for you.

the last thing and something i think Ayesha portrayed so well is that when you love your religion, when you love your community, rejection from your community hurts more. especially when they think they’re being kind. heteronormativity becomes rejection. hesitancy around queerness becomes rejection.

the fact that the question would even be asked, how is it to be queer and Muslim, is basically like saying hey, I’m curious about which ways you’ve been rejected by your community or how they fail to meet your needs. please justify your continued relationship with them and your religion so i can judge you and them. and how is that a fun experience for a queer person? underneath all the jokes we like to make, rejection does hurt. even when it comes from people who are kind and loving and just biased or misunderstanding.

this isn’t a character analysis of Ayesha particularly (but I definitely want to do one)! i just wanted to put this out here for anyone not Muslim who was wondering what was up with those scenes

I don't know what to do.

When I tried talking to a close relative of mine about Palestine, they went on a spiel. They insisted that it wasn't genocide, that Isr*el had given them their land, that Palestine was warned about the Hamas and still voted for them, that Palestine struck first, that Isr*el warned them and gave them time to move south before Isr*el attacked. They insisted the support for Palestine is spurred on by propaganda!

When I asked my relative for proof, they dodged the question, claimed they've known about the whole thing about Isr*el and Palestine for a very long time, and said something about something being in the quran.

Now I'm torn and I'm not sure what's true anymore!

I have so many asks to go through, but I think this one is very important to answer.

To start, I think you are very brave for asking questions and trying to find the truth amidst all the propaganda, so here's what I know.

For some context, I am an Indonesian, and Indonesia and Palestine have very close diplomatic relations and share many similarities in history. We were both colonized and had to resist occupation in a white supremacist world where you are seen as lesser if your skin isn't white and savages/terrorists if you resist or if you want your land back.

Palestine was also the first to recognize Indonesia's independence in 1945, and Indonesia has built a hospital in Gaza that is one of the last ones currently standing due to relentless Israeli bombardments.

People who have gone through oppression recognize oppression. And so far the only people I have seen supporting Israel have been people who had been indoctrinated with Zionist views from childhood, people who are NOT educated on the history of Israel (and why they were there in Palestine to begin with and it is NOT because of the holocaust, which I will explain further down), and Evangelical Christians who want to bring on the rapture. Even then, what they are so angry and appalled by are people calling to send aid, and their only argument for not allowing aid into Gaza because they will be used to create weapons and rockets.

They genuinely believe that Palestinians have a magical ability to turn things like food, water, and medicine into rockets.

So, I will go through your relatives' points one by one.

Firstly, it is not a religious issue. And it never had been. This is colonization and apartheid. Do not let the media or uninformed people tell you otherwise, because that is how they justify and defend its existence.

Israel gave them their land back

Lots of Israelis say that Israeli forces completely pulled out of Gaza in 2005. That isn't 'giving land back' that is 'withdrawing from taking more land.' The entirety of what is now Israel WAS Palestine, and Palestinians aren't even asking for ALL of it back, just the borders that they had in 1967.

Also, if you're wondering why they pulled back, it's because you cannot bombard your own occupied territory, which we see them doing freely now.

Palestine was warned about Hamas

Really? That's so funny because Hamas is backed and funded by Benjamin Netanyahu (his own words at a press conference with an Israeli news cite, not mine) and his US minions to try and oppose the PLO (Palestine Liberation Movement), who were seen as a more legitimate governing body that would make Israel and the US look bad for trying to eradicate them. So, they chose a more extremist group that they'd have an easier time selling as "barbaric terrorists" as a justification to bombard Gaza with impunity. If this sounds familiar, that's because it should. It's all part of their playbook.

Palestine struck first

This did not begin on October 7th. This has been going on since the Nakba in 1948. What happened on October 7th was tragic, but it was IDF bullets that killed those hostages. It took them 6 hours to respond (a survivor said that Hamas had to ASK them to call the IDF, because they were not coming), and when they came, they killed their own civilians and hostages in the crossfire. Watch this video for the full evidence.

Hamas took hostages for a hostage swap. For the thousands of Palestinian civilians that had been kidnapped and wrongfully detained (some of them WITHOUT CHARGES) in Israeli prisons, which included KIDS. And as of now, Israel has rejected the Israeli hostages 3 times even though they are killing them in the bombardment.

Israel has something called the Hannibal Directive. Go look it up.

Because no one in their right mind would agree that just because there is a school shooter hiding inside a school with hostages while using the students as human shields, the only course of action is to then bomb the entire school.

And ask yourself, if this is truly a war on Hamas and Israel valued Palestinian civilian lives as much as they do Israeli lives, then if Hamas was hiding in Israel, would the IDF be using the same approach as they are currently using for Gaza? And if not, then why.

Israel warned them and gave them time to move south

They gave 1 million people 24 hours to complete a trek that would have taken 72 hours. 1 million people who had mostly been women, children, and the handicapped. And during the evacuation, they were bombing convoys, ambulances, and safe routes. Then when they finally got to the south of Gaza, they were bombed there too. In the place where they were supposed to be safe.

Also, if Russia had warned Ukraine that they were going to bomb them and gave them time to evacuate, does that then make it ok for Russia to bomb Ukraine? Of course not, that's a silly argument.

The support for Palestine is spurred on by propaganda

Well, which one between Palestine and Israel literally has the entire western media in their pocket? Which one has been PAYING influencers to voice their support for their country? Which one has been proven to spread LIES unquestioned? (Like 40 beheaded babies, for instance? Or using AI generated images for proof?) Which one has been posting tweets proudly declaring that they have committed war crimes, deleting the tweets, and backtracking?

Which one has fucking social media accounts that are beefing with models and celebrities who are against them, and are using influencer's images without their permission to make it seem like they're on THEIR side?

So now, let's talk about Israel and Holocaust Survivors.

First of all, the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine began in 1917 when Britain signed the Balfour Declaration, which states that they are giving away their occupied colony of Palestine to a group of Zionists immigrating to Palestine from Eastern Europe and Yemen. First thing to note here, there were already Palestinians living on the land, it was not a barren empty land, and it was colonized by the British. So the British gave away stolen land that they had no right to give away in the first place.

The holocaust survivors didn't arrive in Israel until the end of WW2 in the 1940s where they were then scorned and laughed at by the Zionist settlers in Palestine for being 'weak victims.' The holocaust victims continued to be discriminated against and left to live in poverty by the Israeli gov't.

However, their arrival gave the west a reason to arm the settlers so that they can 'defend themselves' from all the 'vicious, evil, uncivilized Arabs' they were surrounded by. And they used this excuse and dehumanization to displace 750,000 Palestinians from their land. The Nakba.

And they continue to use the holocaust survivors (that they are also treating badly) as a shield from international criticism to expand until we have the borders we have today.

The driver lowered his head swiftly and steered the car with great speed, his eyes fixed on the road and lowered, the sound of gunfire continuing unabated. The people behind us had become martyrs. We passed through the barrage of bullets, only to encounter two cars, one empty and the other ablaze, the street strewn with corpses and body parts, including the charred figure that met my gaze. We made it out of the street of death, praise be to God.

It wasn't easy; I will never forget the pounding of my heart and my fear as the sound of bullets pierced our car, taking lives behind us. It was the most harrowing moments of my life. To this day, I am in shock from seeing the carnage and the speed of the car, which came dangerously close to flipping due to its extreme velocity. I still can't believe what happened. Even in any cinematic scene, I have never witnessed anything like this, teetering on the edge of death.

The sight of the man with his body reduced to ashes, and the smoker who remained etched in my thoughts, the woman and her young daughter turned into fragments with severed heads, and bullets strewn all over the place. There is no might and no power except in Allah, the Almighty. O Lord, they have indeed committed excesses in the land. Reveal to us the wonders of Your might. Oh God, what is happening is atrocious

I think Islam is a wonderful religion.

In the middle of octubre, I took notice of how the people in Gaza dealt with things, even if they were suffering, they still praised Allah.

And I was like, let me try that for a few months, as an agnostic, in a Christian household. I didn't know that there were 5 prayers, but once I found out, I looked up how to do them correctly.

As a person who has always questioned why everything was created and why I felt no connection to other religions.

Even going to church with my mom and doing my confirmation, I didn't have that much of a connection, if any.

Islam it kinda clicked with me.

My mom found out, and she started to tell me that in Islam, women are oppressed and so on. I told her that I was just praying, listening to the Quran, and following the teachings of the prophet (pbuph).

I also told her that her views on other religions were warped by the media, news, and movies that portray them in a bad light.

She took it as a bitter pill, but she still let me try and continue. When I would be praying and she would enter my room to ask me something, she would just say, "Oh, sorry. I'll tell you when you're down."

When I did Ramadan, getting up early to find something to eat , wait till it's time to pray then go back to bed.

Even tho she didn't understand the religion and still had her apprehensions, she would come to my room and ask me if I ate or needed to eat before I had to pray.

When I would listen to the Quran or a dua, it made me have a sense of peace of mind.

Having a hard time, I would yap and yap, knowing that even if I think I am alone, Allah is always listening.

I even asked if I was following the right path, and that very thing had a dream. I was walking in the woods and made to a mosque, grabbed a light color stone and sat at a corner, and prayed.

By the time I was done, the stone was darker, and my mom was at the door saying she come to pick me up.

It was a weird dream, but I took it as a sign to keep going, so I did. I learned some Duas, and I would get excited when I would get it right.

I would learn how to pray with those prayer videos, even now I still can't remember all of it, but I can still say them.

I did Islam for 9 to 10 months, and I learned to be more patient, helpful, and to have a clearer mind.

I even taught my mom how to say As-Salaam-Alaikum and Wa-Alaikum-Salaam. When we would go buy groceries, we could have a Muslim cashier, and she would get so happy when I would greet her.

Now the employees know me for my skateboard, and the Muslim would know me for always greeting them.

If they saw me walking by and I didn't notice them, they would greet me like I was an old friend.

Eve tho I am not in Islam as much I still make Duas once in a while, and talk to Allah when I feel like everything is too much. I try to follow the teachings as well.

My mom, even once in a while, would say, " Allah couldn't like that." Or " Ask Allah to help me."

So, seeing how you incorporate Islam into your time travel ua it makes me a little happy.

I can learn something new and enjoy a good story at the same time. I am back to being agnostic, but Islam holds a place in my heart along with the people I meet when I decide to give the religion a try.

This is so cute- i teared up at your dream, too wholesome. And your mom is sweet and supportive, 10/10 mother <33 And i (as do most muslims, im sure) RELATE to talking to Allah like He's our bestie/therapist because it really does feel so therapeutic. Even if Allah already knows whats in your heart, it feels good to talk to Him. Or sometimes, when you're just so heartbroken, so devastated that u cant even bring the words out and you just... cry. Oh- it feels so good to cry out to Allah , the Almighty, the Ar-Rahman, the Ar-Raheem- and you sort of do feel the pain going away after your mini breakdown sesh (actually had a minor one two days ago and after i was done, i was like "welp, that problem isnt that big of a deal. Allah will take care of it for me.") and that is the mindset that keeps me sane these days-

"Allah will take care of everything."

I think its great that you tried out something new, did your own research on it, and like yes- you should definitely explore other religions to find answers to your own questions.

And yes! I do enjoy learning new things through stories too! Thats why i find history so interesting, because im playing a whole ass 10 season show in my head with all the dramatics. It even helped me with biology and medschool too! Like take the hormonal-feedback mechanism. I'd go like- "and then the brain would send signals to release hormones from this organ to tackle with that problem, but once that problem is dealt with- the organ goes- nah bro. that's ENOUGH! STOP! FUCKING STOP!" or "in autoimmune disease, body's own defender cells would suddenly lose their memory and think EVERYONE is their sworn enemy, and *dramatic war music* attack from every direction, not realising they've killed their own, the very people they were born to protect *sad war music* War is ugly-"

i knew some people would not like me incorporating islam into this au, but like- 1. its something different, and i wanted to try it out. 2. i am the only target audience i care about. i write what i want to read. 3. i mean, so far, the eras i've written about has islam as a big component it, so its obv gonna play a big part in it.

i guess, if some people were to keep an open mind while reading, they'd enjoy it. its not like i can force u to convert from what- an au?? i think people who dont want to read this au is either u really hate islam because of false preconcieved notions or you're afraid that maybe you'll actually like islam and u might be interested in it. i dont think anyone could be that weak willed- to be so easily influenced by just mere words?????? because if u are so easily influenced, then i think u need help.
