Exactly! In my opinion they fucked it up tremendously by neglecting the appeal of Guillermo’s character being in his underdog status and his eventual successes. initially, Guillermo’s character is framed as being an underdog because he is human. but then his character develops and he’s an underdog because he’s gay- then he comes out of the closet. he’s an underdog because he was bullied- then he learns to stand up for himself. he’s an underdog because he’s fat, because he’s nerdy, because he’s Mexican, the son of immigrants, the son of a single mother, growing up poor and being isolated for all of these things. these issues are supposed to be resolved when he comes into his own as a vampire slayer, and we see this when he stands up to people over and over afterwards.
then there’s the scene where he’s trying to talk about his feelings and the vampires are laughing at the monster instead and he slips into the hallway and sits in that chair for the talking head. the thousand yard stare he has as the camera pans out… it stopped being funny and started being truly horrifying because we now know Guillermo’s not with the vampires just because he was obsessed with them, but because he was seeking a refuge from a world that rejected him. the vampires shitting on him stopped being funny because it now mirrored all the ways he was shit on his whole life, specifically in the way that happens to people in real life all the fucking time. in a way that was so compelling and realistic because Harvey shaped Guillermo after his own life.
which is what made us root for him when he did finally succeed in being on equal footing with the vampires. and even when he was shit on, because of the cyclical nature of the show, there was the underlying assumption that he would get his eventually. in the finale, that assumption no longer exists. this shifts Guillermo from being bullied by the vampires to being bullied by the show. that authentic feeling made it so so dark and tonally it was a complete 180 from the rest of the show. Guillermo’s last talking head? deeply horrifying.
to go off topic for one minute to talk about Harvey Gullién in WWDITS the show might have fumbled his ending but what made Guillermo so lovable was never (just) about the show. It was about Harvey putting his whole heart and soul into playing him and basing a lot of Guillermo’s life off of himself. Guillermo growing up poor with a single mom, growing up not having a lot of friends and being bullied, being a closeted gay man with a family who accepted him all along, not being stereotypically masculine, that was all Harvey. He even said in an interview with Esquire about the coming out episode “If you had put a mirror to my face while filming this episode, I feel as though I would have seen a younger version of myself anxiously waving back at me. We had lived this life before”. He gave Guillermo a last name. He helped write the episode where you meet Guillermo’s family to make it authentically Mexican. He made the fucking buñuelos they ate so that they’d be the right ones he literally was cooking on that set. Guillermo does not belong to WWDITS Guillermo belongs to him!!! and to us!!!!

a lot of people have been hurt in the terror attacks in lebanon, i know this is a time where requests for donations are high and a lot of people are struggling financially. however, if you have something to spare please consider donating to the lebanese red cross, many people who have been injured or died in these attacks have been innocent civilians and hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients.

Saira’s so right btw because sometimes your sanctuary and your safe space is the worlds worst studio apartment that’s about to be torn down for unsafe living conditions (i have not had clean drinking water for two weeks) (this is a cry for help)

Hello 👋
Vetted by @90-ghost

Hello, I am Heba Al-Anqar, 21 years old, a university student. My university was suspended due to the war. I am writing about my family: my father Bakr (54 years old), my mother Alaa (46 years old), and my sisters Aya (18 years old), Amal (15 years old), Muhammad (13 years old), and Maryam (8 years old). We have faced many challenges in this war, from the destruction of our home to the famine we continue to suffer in northern Gaza.
Tumblr media
My father suffers from heart problems. He had open-heart surgery when he was 36 years old. He also suffers from cartilage problems. He had his pelvic joint replaced about two years ago, in addition to other health problems. He cannot work due to his health condition.
Tumblr media
My mother also suffers from asthma and shortness of breath, in addition to the difficulty of obtaining treatment due to the conditions and the war.
Tumblr media
This is our house, which was destroyed by war
Tumblr media
We have become homeless in places of refuge, in addition to the difficulty of obtaining medicine, food, and daily expenses
Tumblr media
I created this account to request your help in this difficult ordeal by donating to meet the necessary needs, as we were relying on social assistance before the war.
My goal is to help my family live in safety and provide the necessary necessities for living, as there is a high cost of living and difficulty in obtaining necessities. We ask for your help in leaving the Gaza Strip to save my family’s life. The cost of travel is $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child, in addition to travel and accommodation expenses of $500 per month.
Together, we can support Heba and her family through this ordeal. Your donation, no matter how big, can make a difference in my family's life to get life and start a new life
If you are looking to support Heba and her family, please consider providing assistance directly or through relevant charitable organizations.
