What is it about Zachary Quinto? He is such a great actor. There is a calm intensity about him that tranfixesres me to whatever screen he's on. Somehow, he became Spock and did it so well, I thought he was as good or dare i say maybe better, than Leonard Nimoy. I'm watching his new show, Brilliant Minds. I'm the first couple of minutes, I was transfixed again, and I had goosebumps tickling my soul. I'm gonna watch this show because Zachary makes it great. I love this guy!!! I've already gotten goosebumps, and I've cried, and the show is only half over. I love Zachary Quinto!!! ❤️ it's nice to have a new show that I'll actually watch. I wish they made more shows like this one, but then again, there's only one Zachary Quinto to go around 😁

Hi friend!! I haven’t been on as much thanks to life (that almost 10 days without power at the beginning of the month wasn’t fun…) so you kinda threw me with the new name again! 😅😅
Anywho, I wanted to ask your opinion on Brilliant Minds? My mom asked if I saw the previews before it came out and I kinda did but didn’t. And before I invest in another new show (got High Potential and Doctor Odyssey on the roster now lol) I was wanting some feedback from people I trust. I mean, I liked Zachary Quinto as Spock and Teddy Sears KILLED it as Zoom on The Flash so I kinda wanna watch just for them anyway, but.. do I *really* need another new show to try and watch? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
hiii and welcome back~
well if you choose to watch something new, it should definitely be Brilliant Minds imho
first of all, you have the above mentioned great cast at your hand and some new young faces who have been doing an amazing job playing the interns, like seriously, everyone is great!
second of all, yeah it's a bit corny, but the show itself is very interesting for unexpected reasons. like, it's a procedural, but it doesn't necessarily feel like one? normally on medical dramas, especially the ones centered around diagnostics the mystery of whatever's going on with this week's patient is the rush, but on BM it's almost secondary compared to the human experience of the patients and their doctors.
they don't just magically fix them up at the end of the episode, they figure out what's wrong, admit that sometimes there is no way of knowing what's causing something and then they come up with ways for the patients to adapt to their conditions. i frankly couldn't name another show that does that.
the way they give us small nuggets about the characters' backgrounds without giving away too much is done to a perfection and every single character is interesting and loveable in their own way (i'm not saying you're gonna love everyone but they all have the potential) and the dynamics are chef's kiss between all of them, seriously.
and then ofc there is the fact that the show has openly queer and/or neurodivergent characters and actors on the cast.
the only thing i could say "against" it is that it sucks you in shockingly fast and you get attached without realising it
in conclusion:

Early Chris Pine is a trip to watch. You played a hard partier in an episode of "E.R." You cried in front of David Caruso in "CSI: Miami." At that time in your life, were you just going after anything?
Fuck yeah! Don't be a waiter. Actually, I was a host at a restaurant and just hated it. Could not have hated it anymore. I was not a people person. It was all about just getting work.
You started getting noticed thanks to romantic comedies — "Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," "Just My Luck," "Blind Dating" — would you watch any of those titles now? Like, if you're in a hotel room flipping through the channels and it comes on.
I mean, not a chance. And that's for most of my films. It's too difficult because then you're thinking, "God, why did I fucking do that?" Or "Why did they pick that take?"
What I will say, though, is I get more people coming up to me about "Princess Diaries 2," and I think that's because it's played for so many generations of young girls now. So that's a trip.
Playing Captain Kirk in the "Star Trek" movies must have been daunting — not only were you taking on an iconic IP, but the actor who originated the character, William Shatner, is still so synonymous with Kirk. Were you ever comfortable in that role?
It's interesting. Karl Urban decided to go head first into McCoy because Karl loved "Star Trek." With Spock, you have to do Spock-like things, plus Zach [Quinto] kind of looked like Leonard [Nimoy]. And then Kirk is a tricky one. You are the lead of the band of characters, so you don't want to occupy too much space. It's fine if they are doing a thing, but you don't want to. And J.J. [Abrams] never asked me to do a thing, though I did do little nods to Shatner because it was fun.
But I would say I felt most in his shoes in the third movie. By that point, I think I mellowed into it and didn't feel like I was trying too hard.
Has the ship sailed to do Kirk again?
I honestly don't know. There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it's always been with "Trek," I just wait and see.
"Unstoppable" is the moment, I feel, where you're not fucking around anymore. Tony Scott, working across from Denzel Washington —
Youth really is wasted on the young [laughs]. It's such an awesome moment. It's one of the biggest films of the year; all the lights are shining on you, all the possibility of you being able to do whatever you want. I really wish I took more effort to enjoy that moment.
I was reading a lot of scripts at the time, and I was on a plane when I read this one. And I didn't want to like it because it's a train. It's like, what is my job in this fucking film? The train is going to explode and then it's not. You know exactly what is going to happen.
But Mark Bomback wrote this incredible script, and I was on the plane, and I couldn't stop reading it. I would push it away — No. Buuut. No, nope. Buuut. I just could not turn away from it. Plus, Tony Scott was a god to me. He'd done "Days of Thunder" and "Top Gun," and then you add into that mix Denzel, plus that it's a two-hander that takes place in one location. From an acting class standpoint, I'm getting paid a lot of money to learn at the feet of one of the best who has ever done it. It was out of control cool. I learned more from that set about what it means to be a movie star than probably anything else.
Before "Hell or High Water," you'd worked with Ben Foster in "The Finest Hours." How much of the praise you received for that movie do you attribute to the comfort you two had in working together?
I think it's more than that. Taylor [Sheridan] wrote a banger script. That script is one of the five best scripts I've ever read in my entire life. So you have the writing. Then you have David [Mackenzie] coming off of making "Starred Up," which is an incredible film, and then you have the Jeff Bridges of it all.
I think I held my own there, but you have these two incredibly dynamic actors: Jeff is the legend, and Ben is a caged animal of an actor. I had a lot of fun because up until that point, I hadn't played a closed-off, non-talkative, non-charming leading man. So I was really stoked to take that on. I think it was all the pieces coming together, not just one thing.
By the time you did the "Wonder Woman" franchise, you had done your fair share of blockbusters. Was there a moment in filming the first movie when you realized this one was different than the others?
I got pitched the film and didn't want to do it. Patty came on board and I still didn't want to do it. I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle. Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, "Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is "Casablanca," that's the movie I want to make." And I was like, oh, now that is very cool, because when had you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up.
For me, the pivotal moment is the scene on the tarmac; it's "Casablanca" by a different name. So when I saw that film, man. Film is not an actor's medium, it's a director's and editor's medium, and shit can go wrong really fast, and that was a movie where you're in the theater and you get lost in it. You forget you're in it. That's when you know it's gold.
Do you or Gal Gadot or Patty feel that there's unfinished business with the franchise not doing a third movie?
Me? No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.
I'm stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere. I don't know what the reasoning was behind that; it's above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character, and Patty is such a thoughtful director. Even think of "Wonder Woman 1984" — that's a blockbuster movie that is a hero's journey not about revenge. I mean, wow. People poo-pooed it, but wow!

My knowledge on Star Trek is pretty limited, I've watched a handful of the movies, almost nothing of the og tv show but I've watched the modern movies with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe saldana. Also the first season of that show with Michael Burnham? But that's all
So, my question here is... How many versions of Spock are there? And how would you rate them? Any favorite?
Hey, thanks so much for the ask! I really have no excuse for why it took so long to answer it. I guess this is the kind of question where you either write a whole essay or answer it in a sentence. I always put it off, thinking I would sit down one day and magically write that essay… let's not kid ourselves, though, I'm not known for my fandom meta. But I'm determined to give you more than a sentence. So here goes!
You asked me to rank the Spocks, of which there are 3. *queue some huge Spock fan swooping in and berating me for how wrong I am* 😅 But yeah, we have Leonard Nimoy's Spock (the original one everyone has heard of), the one from the AOS movie, and - let's get this out of the way - my favorite, the one from Strange New Worlds (he also has a few (?) appearances in Discovery … I think in season one? So maybe you've seen him.) This sounds weird because he's such an icon - and I do appreciate him a lot - but… Spock doesn't particularly interest me? I'm not a huge watcher of the original Star Trek series either (yes I know, shame on me! 🙈), although I have watched it several times over the years. I don't feel like I really know Nimoy's Spock that well? I'm more interested in Vulcan culture in general. Of course, all that wouldn't exist w/o Original Spock AND Nimoy's input during production. He laid the foundation. So we owe him a lot.
That being said, I love that, in SNW, we're getting to know Spock and the Vulcan people in general from a fresh perspective. The way they're exploring intraracial dating (Spock and his fiancée T'Pring), interracial dating (Spock and Nurse Chapel), Spock coming to terms with his human side, navigating friendship and camaraderie on a majority human spaceship… It's just really well done. And idk if you've watched a bit of Strange New Worlds, but it's just an extremely beautiful show, simply stunning, visually. And let's face it, Ethan Peck is easy on the eyes as well. We're always told that Vulcans are physically stronger than humans and I love that he's looking the part? And that guys can act. Just an overall great casting choice.
I should probably add that I'm in the minority with my opinion. I have a feeling that most fans don't like Peck's Spock, but I think both the actor and the writing team are doing a great job. I love the show's humor and that they're not taking themselves and the characters too seriously, not even Saint Spock!
And of course there's Zachary Quinto, wouldn't want to forget about him. Gotta be honest with you, I only have eyes for Captain Pike and Uhura and mayyyybe Kirk when I'm watching the movie, but Quinto!Spock is doing a good job, I guess! He definitely has the sharpest haircut of them all! (and I lovelovelove little Spock!!!! Like, Spock as a kid? Do you remember that scene where he's at school and some meanies bully him because he's half human? Oh my gosh he's the cutest little kid and he looks so sad and I always want to give him a big hug!)
Anyway. Thanks for letting me ramble! I know Star Trek is not for everyone, but at this point there's a big variety of shows, so if there's any way for you to catch an episode or two, give it another try! 💜

What was the first muse that you’ve written? / Are you happy with how your favorite canon muse was portrayed in canon? / How far do go with divergencies when it comes to your canon muse?
@adversitybloomed || questions for the mun
What was the first muse that you’ve written?
My OC Nathanael (known as Naizhu in my xianxia verse @assortedsouls, but can otherwise be found at @goodheartedfool ). He was the one I started rping with back in 2003. Fandom and race has changed, but he has for the most of it remained the same. He was created as a "fuck this" response to most male characters where I started rping (a Swedish chat featuring a D&D like world). The male characters where all like 6', muscular warriors who never showed any emotions and didn't know how to handle anything softer. So, I made Nat, who's 5'8", a healer, gay and wears his heart on his sleeve. He has no problem expressing himself or his emotions. He would also help anyone, even those who have tried to kill him. I love my son.
Are you happy with how your favorite canon muse was portrayed in canon?
God, favourite canon muse? Idk if I can choose that. Maybe Spock. I can only state for what I've seen, which is anything up to S1 of Discovery. I generally do like how he was portrayed, so don't really have anything to say there. I don't know anything about any Spock portrayed by anyone other than Nimoy and Quinto though.
How far do go with divergencies when it comes to your canon muse?
As far as I feel is logical. I generally try to make all my headcanons and divergencies logical. Based on something I have noticed with the character and their situation/world/personality and not taken out of the blue. So as long as I feel there's a basis for it, I'd go for it.

10 characters | 10 fandoms | 10 tags (we'll see about that last one) I haven't made a text post in so long how's everyone doing. Thank you, rj (@sidprescot), for the tag! This was a nice surprise. :)
Gosh do I have a type and they're all Old Men and Tragic Ladies my beloved. Let's go!! 1. Varric Tethras (Dragon Age 2): he shot right through my heart with that crossbow THE LITERAL SECOND he came on screen and I've been cursing Bioware ever since. He is a nonromanceable short king and I have never wanted anyone more thx. 2. Nakmor Drack (Mass Effect Andromeda): the Tempest Crew is so freaking charming, and while I love my jelly fish cat aliens the Angara, my favorite character is absolutely this old cantakerous grandpa Krogan. Whom, much like Wrex, I wish I could romance. (p.s. there is a TEASE of a flirt option and u can imagine how little that helped my case) 3. Spock (literally every Star Trek iteration): He is my Everything. Nemoy, Quinto, and Peck all bring something unique to the character's portrayal. I love him in every universe and I can never get enough of this EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED NERD.
4. Alicent Hightower (House of the Dragon): one half of my divorced lesbinems and I feel so much for her and the tragedy/complexity of both her character and the heartwrenching slow decay of her r/s with Rhaenyra. I cannot wait for S2. 5. Aerith Gainsborough (Final Fantasy VII): ooooough, beautiful, tragic, kind, funny, cool flower seller of my life. Remake!Aerith particularly stole my heart along with the show. There is this sad, beguiling mystery about her that draws you in, and she is so cheerful in spite of it all. I can't wait for Rebirth but also I am terrified lol. 6. Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher): "How ravishing she is, he thought. Everything about her is ravishing. And menacing. Those colours of hers; that contrast of black and white. Beauty and menace. Her raven-black, natural curls. Her cheekbones, pronounced, emphasising a wrinkle, which her smile – if she deigned to smile – created beside her mouth, wonderfully narrow and pale beneath her lipstick…" I mean. C'mon. That is MY WIFE etc, copy paste rj's exact blurb. Anya Chalotra is the perfect Yen. She is everything and deserves the world and I will glady let her burn it all down and murder me if she wants to. 7. Zero (Final Fantasy XIV): [Endwalker patch spoilers!] who doesn't love an autistic badass goth half-human half-voidsent who has lived as a monster for so long she forgot her own identity and is learning how to be human again and finding her humanity via the power of friendship and delicious food, like. I needed more of her and I miss her already!!!
8. Kim Wexler (Better Call Saul): omg so hard to pick just one from this show (ilu nacho), but Kim Wexler SUCKER PUNCHES U IN THE THROAT with her awesomeness. She is this extremely competent, understated cool, calculating yet caring and earnest character who compliments Jimmy so well and whose nuances her amazing actress Rhea Seehorn manages to convey so masterfully. She is also tragic af, but hello it's Breaking Bad prequel lol. On that note... 9. Kim Kitsuragi (Disco Elysium): DOUBLE KIM WHAMMY!!! They're so alike it's not even funny. I'd say Kim has the stronger moral center between the two, but I love them for many of the same reasons. He is also extremely competent, understated cool, with a side of being totally game for Harry's antics once he warms up to him (my Harry build was 'himbo' so he did a lot of dumb shit but he was nice). 10. Irving Bailiff (Severance): firstable, if you haven't seen Severance yet, please do yourself the favor and don't let me spoil this for u!! Irving Bailiff is an Experience. He is a stickler for the rules and very much a stick in the mud compared to his colleagues, but his true self leaks into this version of himself slowly at first, then in surprising bursts of rebellion that become clear at the end when it is shown that his Outtie/true self is actively trying to bring Lumon down like a TOTAL FUCKING BADASS in the most delightful reveal. Also he has a whirlwind romance with another old man played by Christopher Walken.
phew!! this was fun. lol @ my answers getting longer. I'm not tagging anyone but consider this an invitation to join in on the fun anyway!

it's early i know but kirk or sisko
EVIL QUESTION! sisko makes me happy every single time hes on screen. i always look forward to seeing him. he's a great dad and he supports his people - i think i've only seen him come close to dropping the ball a few times. he's the antithesis to (almost) everything that drives me nuts about picard so it's very cathartic in that regard. plus our fucking introduction to him (picard killing his wife, "you exist here") will be imprinted on my neurons forever. possibly the best intro of any star trek character yet excepting every single time we've seen spock.
so far though i haven't seen sisko struggle as much as kirk does, excepting of course re: his grief. i'm sure this is because i'm in the middle of his first season rather than say past the end of his run, but i also think the struggle helps make kirk interesting. sisko hasn't had his mirrorverse "not on my ship" moment for me yet, or any equivalent. they haven't unintentionally close encountered him nigh on a dozen times. most of his dilemmas so far have been ethical ones, not ones where his life and other lives are in physical danger. and, for all it was brought up in the first episode that the death of his wife has permanently changed him and he is still struggling to live without her, we don't actually SEE that struggle - jennifer has only brought up a couple of times. i have total faith that all of that is on the way, i just haven't got there yet. because we're watching in release order and ds9 never aired by itself we will always be flipping back and forth to either tng or voyager between it. it'll be a slow process.
also, there is the simple fact of attachment. kirk was the first trek character i ever fell in love with. my entry to this series were the aos movies, and while i liked spock a LOT in those movies and still do, quinto's spock can't really hold a candle to nimoy's - he can't QUITE capture what makes spock so important and unique in the same way. so in my very, very, VERY first encounter with star trek, i imprinted on dead dad guy. kirk, let alone aos kirk, is no longer my fav (tos kirk is superior to aos kirk any day) but put him against most people who are not spock and he will probably win.
that doesn't mean sisko isn't really great though. full ranking coming at the end of s1 but rn odo kira and sisko are def my top 3.

Hii,
I read Fighting Gravity on ao3 earlier this year and I wanted to tell you I loved it! I'm one of those peripheral members of fandoms who haven't read or watched any of the canon stuff, but are too obsessed with the fanworks to stop. It makes me wonder about stories like yours - is some point in the larger canon where something similar happens, or do you just come up with the idea for an unhoused Spock on your own?
I'm sending my ask to thank your for your story, but I also wanted to ask if you were alright with people printing and binding personal copies (ie. not for profit) of the fic for themselves.
I've been hand binding sketchbooks on and off for a little while, and I saw a tiktok of someone's self-bound versions of their favourite fics and thought that trying my hand at fic binding would be a fun project for this summer.
I just wanted to ask bc I heard some authors aren't okay with personal prints, so just let me know please; I'll always love the story regardless.
Aw, thank you so much! I'm sorry it took so long for me to reply - my laptop completely died several months back and the only one I could get online with is 11 years old, freezes up upon trying to load Tumblr, and is physically falling apart. -_- So I have been away from Tumblr all this time and did not see this until I got a new laptop tonight and could load the site again, I apologize! First of all - I consider it a great honor when anyone thinks enough of my fanstuff to want to do ANYTHING with it. =) I mean, I'm just out here being a nerd, writing fic about characters that are not mine. I can hardly be possessive about them. ;) So while I suppose it's rather late for a summer project, if for some reason the inclination strikes you in the future, feel free! It sounds like a beautiful project and I'm honestly flattered that you would think my story worthy. =) As for the inspiration behind that particular story... there is a rather silly story behind it. (tl;dr, possibly...) My partner-at-the-time and I were both really into the new Star Trek movie when it came out in 2009 - and this was not long after both of us were fixated on Ace Attorney fandom, which had recently had a new game released. Before the game was released, there was some character art showing an existing character looking scruffy, and the Ace Attorney fandom decided he must have fallen on hard times. There were multiple fanfics written about the guy he's usually shipped with finding him unhoused and taking him in and helping him get back on his feet. It became sort of a fandom injoke, "Miles adopts a homeless Phoenix". Not long after the first reboot Star Trek movie came out, the ONTD Star Trek community over at LiveJournal (good times!) dug up some screen test pics of Zachary Quinto wearing the Spock ears... but with a scruffy unshaven look and longer hair. So I showed them to my partner, who reacted with six little words:
"So... Jim adopts a homeless Vulcan?" I laughed because that was ridiculous and impossible given how some things work in the Star Trek canon. ...And then I started thinking about it, and how maybe it wasn't impossible, how someone *could* possibly wind up in such a situation in the Star Trek universe, and stopped laughing. ...And then spent the next several months of my life having this offhand joking comment turn into yet another exploration of one of my favorite themes: predestination vs. free will. OOPS. My partner, of course, was laughing their head off incredulously the whole time as I sent them drafts of the next chapter to read over and repeatedly reminded them that this was ALL THEIR FAULT. ;) So that is the...origin story... of that fic. Apologies for the length of this (and again, the lateness of the reply) - though to be honest it's so absurd it's fun to share it again. :D
#star trek#fanfiction#fanfic origin stories#should I admit there's a Kirk/Spock/Bones sequel like 2/3 finished?#possibly no#oops

Triumvirate Prompts: Day 25
#25. Who is the best-suited actor for their character's role?
I'm gonna be honest, I hate these kinds of 'who played it best' questions. I have my preference, of course, but every media has its own direction and the like. I don't think it's all that fair to compare the TOS actors against the Kelvin actors, at least in terms of who played it best. I'll criticize the writing and direction of those characters, but the actors are portraying what they are directed to portray. The role isn't going to be the same because the character isn't exactly the same. It's like asking who I think played Batman the best. I have my preference (Kevin Conroy for those curious), but no version of the character is exactly the same. So I just think that it's not right to say who was 'best suited' because at the end of the day, they're doing a different interpretation.
But if you want my honest answer...
It's Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley. It's not even close. That is not to say that Pine, Quinto, and Urban are bad. They aren't. Now I can't comment on Peck's Spock or Wesley's Kirk since I haven't watched those ST shows yet (still waiting on them to get McCoy in there... any day now...) so that wouldn't be very fair. But anyways!
I've made it no secret how much I disliked the characterization choices in the Kelvin films. While he got better, Kirk in the first movie pissed me off so much and came across as far too unlikable and undeserving to have become Captain. Spock was better, and I more dislike certain decisions like fridging Amanda than the actual characterization. McCoy imo was the best characterized... but he got so little focus, though when he did get it, it was good stuff. Thankfully, Urban allowed Kelley's spirit to possess him or something, because he made every moment count. Quinto and Pine also took what they were given and made it work. None of the issues that I have are on them. I don't like AOS Kirk (until Beyond), but Pine acted the Hell out of it.
But to me... sadly, the chemistry wasn't quite there with the three of them. It sucks because I've seen them in interviews together, and the chemistry truly does resonate there. Beyond went a good ways to making up for it, but I feel that it was too little too late at that point. The Triumvirate just didn't feel truly formed. It got to a bad start between Kirk and Spock in the first one and never truly recovered for me and again until Beyond, there was far too little interaction with Spock and McCoy. They portrayed Kirk and McCoy's relationship really well in all three films, I was happy for that. The rest? Not so much. It's a big reason why I don't care for AOS outside fanon, because the Triumvirate that I loved so much wasn't truly there. But of course that is only my opinion.
That brings us back to Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley. It was clear from the offset that something clicked with these three. Sure, we all know how much of a ham and an asshole that Shatner was, and still is to this day. Maybe his acting for Kirk wasn't for everyone... but it really worked for me. I don't think I need to go into depth about Nimoy and Kelley's performances. They were very much the standouts of the cast, IMO. They all worked very well in their respective pairs. Kirk's relationships with Spock and McCoy was evident from Day 1 and while it took a bit to see Spock and McCoy's truly form, when it did it just clicked. Even in early episodes like The Enemy Within or Charlie X, when the three got some extended interactions, you could just tell that there was something there with them. They seemed to start realizing that as S1 went on and by the end of it with episodes like Devil in the Dark, The City on the Edge of Forever, and especially Operation: Annihilate? Yeah, focusing on those three as a trio and adding Kelley's name to the opening credits was the best choice that they could have made.
So if you ask me who portrayed their character the best? I prefer the TOS actors because I prefer TOS overall. But I don't think it's really fair because again, the universes and thus the characters are different. But if you ask me, who got the Triumvirate and their dynamic the best? It's Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley. I can only hope that when/if SNW cast a McCoy and the current showrunners decide to bring the Triumvirate back, that we'll see Wesley, Peck, and whoever McCoy's actor will be able to bring that same magic.

Share your newest OC and a few facts!
Thanks so much the this, Kass!! I will share a few facts about my new Star Trek OC, Layla Dupreti!!
She's an OC for the newer movies with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, rather than the original series.
She's a Sulu ship.
Layla is a skilled thief who's been renting her incredible stealth skills out for hire since she was only a teenager, after losing her family and needing a way to make money for herself. This does result in her being paid very well, but it also means that she often finds herself working for some very dangerous people, and roped into jobs that have dangerous consequences if she refuses to do them.
A prime example of this being when a very threatening group of people pay her to stow onto the USS Enterprise at its next stop and make off with their new load of cargo. The cargo is medicine and sorely needed on the planet the Enterprise is taking it to, so Layla really doesn't want to steal it, but she'd rather be a bad person who steals much-needed medicine than be dead, so she agrees to it anyway.
She then winds up getting caught, but rather than keeping her as a prisoner and subjecting her to Starfleet justice, Captain Kirk feels bad after hearing Layla's story and decides to let her off the hook, provided she stay on the Enterprise and take a job as a yeoman (because really, is it even Jim Kirk if he doesn't have a soft spot for young people with rough pasts?).
Layla is very rough around the edges, due to the way she grew up - she's closed-off, has a hard time recognizing or caring how other people are feeling, and doesn't trust easily, or even really at all. But the longer she spends on the Enterprise, around people who are kind and accepting and willing to give her a chance, she begins to relax and open up just a little.
(Not that she ever really loses her sharp tongue or reluctance around new people; you can take the cat out of the alley, but you can never really take the alley out of the cat.)
One of the first people on the Enterprise she starts to develop a bond with is Christine Chapel (we're pretending she actually has a role in the movies instead of just being mentioned), and the two of them even have a little flirtation for a while, but it never really goes beyond that; they have fun flirting with each other, but they know they're much better off as friends. (Plus Chapel sees the way Sulu looks at Layla and she would never want to step on his toes like that.)
She also develops a kind of unexpected bond with Spock; they bond over being seen as the cold and emotionally distant ones on the crew, and often "hang out" by sitting in silence together, both of them doing their own thing.
She and Sulu are definitely the grumpy/sunshine, golden retriever boyfriend/black cat girlfriend, "take my knife" boyfriend/"I already have it" girlfriend, and we love it for them <;3.
Speaking of knives! Layla actually has a matching set of knives, given to her as payment for one of her first jobs, that she takes with her everywhere and always keeps at her side. She's named them Castor and Pollux, and they're basically her children.
I haven't made an official intro post for her yet, but I'm very excited to do that and explore her and her character further!!
(I'm also gonna tag my Star Trek girlie @dancingsunflowers-ocs, because she's technically already met Layla and I think she'll be happy I'm officially doing something with my girl!!)

Spock's deal as developed over decades:
logical, stoic, superhuman strength, superhuman precision, green blood, pointy ears, scientist, musician, vegetarian, friend to animals, telepath, hippie sympathizer, idealist
has more powerful emotions than humans, so he has to hide them
over years of cold professionalism, forms incredibly deep attachments to coworkers Kirk and Bones, even though their human lifespans are tragically shorter than his own
a complex reflection of an imperfect but remarkable and beloved real person (Nimoy's two biographies are called "I Am Not Spock" and "I Am Spock"); because of this, Spock is famously Jewish-coded and expressed many of Nimoy's strong personal values and creative ideas
historically significant gay interpretation by an important fandom and published writers; in the wider fandom, Spock's sex appeal surpassed the actual lead actor's
he has some romances as a young man, but he ultimately dedicates his life to the noble cause of Romulan reunification
bizarre alien libido on a fuck-or-die 7-year cycle; this silly premise is taken extremely seriously
difficult relationship with his Vulcan father and human mother
complex relationship with Starfleet, especially w/r/t Pike, Kirk, and Romulans
has a secret half-brother who darkly mirrors Spock's own struggles with emotions, forming bonds with other people, and faith in God
sacrifices himself out of pure, logical love and gets reborn through the misuse of a terraformer-turned-superweapon
the platonic ideal of a nerd
In 2009, Spock was recast, but this version is from an alternate timeline. There are two significant changes to the character, which are not as appealing to me, but I still appreciate them:
his homeplanet was destroyed. This enormous tragedy gives us a character who is much less stoic. In my opinion, this takes away from Spock's uniqueness. But as a Star Wars fan, I appreciate that Spock's grief for his planet gets to affect him in a way Leia's never did
he has a relationship with Uhura. This is a fun decision, especially as these characters had some chemistry in the original show, but it is a bit spoiled by the creepy tracking device subplot
This recast is a fundamentally different character. In my opinion the best thing about him is when they lean into that difference; Quinto's Spock knows about Nimoy's, and has profound feelings about his alternate self. This was handled beautifully after Nimoy's death, and I am grateful that his protege's version of the character got to grieve with us in the real world.
In 2019, Spock was recast for a second time, and this version is supposed to be the same character as the original. But they have made multiple changes to the character anyway, which I mostly dislike. I haven't watched SNW since I feel this interpretation of Pike is even more ableist than the 60s version, but I am trying to keep track of what this franchise is doing with their best character:
Spock now has an additional secret sibling, an adopted human sister Michael. The reveal that Sarek chose Spock over Michael for Vulcan Science Academy, which Spock refused anyway, is some fun drama. It makes me feel bad for Michael and angry with Spock, which is a bummer. I do not think we needed to have Trek's first Black woman protagonist anchored by her relationship to a legacy character. I enjoy their dynamic, but I don't see a fundamental mirror of challenging topics with them like I do with him and Sybok. And of course this bond isn't going to be able to influence Spock in the future, as his bond with Sybok will
Spock now also has dyslexia; I appreciate the representation, but again this isn't going to influence him at all in the future; Spock in "The Menagerie" is an ableist character by modern standards
he's in a love triangle with Chapel and T'Pring; to me this is OOC for all three of them, and unnecessarily makes original Spock into a big, insensitive jerk. While he is a passionate character, the whole point is that he controls his passion, even to the point of choosing his love for humanity over his love for individuals. His deep friendship with Kirk and Bones is only possible since they have grown old together, which is the main theme of the original movies
where'd the chest hair go
Peck's interview where he says they're pushing Spoimler and he enjoyed acting with Quaid because they're both from acting families = so this actor's input into this once highly personal character is just queerbaiting and nepotism
The reason I wrote this post is because, in the newest SNW ep (spoilers), Spock becomes somehow humanized and, as a result, happily eats bacon. First of all, "I love bacon" is like, the definition of cringe outdated internet humor. More importantly, this is a nonsensical and possibly offensive move for a character who is Jewish-coded and vegetarian. Vulcans can eat meat, but they choose not to as part of their strict code of ethics. Spock in particular has a deep love for all forms of life, and his telepathy even gives him the ability to understand every creature from the Horta to the whales. Of course Federation meat is synthesized, but, at least in my interpretation, I can't imagine Spock even symbolically enjoying eating one of the smartest animals on Earth.
Of course every beloved character will develop over time, sometimes even in prequels. But these changes ought to make them more complex, or more personal to a new creator. The things that made Spock special are draining away. He is becoming more fashionable, straighter, more ordinary. Most fans seem to enjoy the new version, but I am left reeling at these odd decisions.

Deleting my comments? TWICE? (I just thought I didn't post the first one.) Really? FINE! I'll reblog your shitty post! I didn't want to bring more traction, but oh well. Saying Zachary Quinto has an "oddly high-pitched voice" when he DOES NOT, feels HOMOPHOBIC to me. You literally could have said nothing like you did Pine and Urban. BUT NO! You had to comment on his voice. Leonard Nimoy loved Zachary Quinto as Spock. AND THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS! But seriously why comment on his voice at all?
Chris Pine: Yeah I mean I’m NAMED Kirk and I’m gonna have SOME of Kirk’s personality traits but I am trying to somewhat make my own character
Zachary Quinto (in his oddly high pitched voice): I WILL be emotive because I MUST portray Spock’s inner turmoil! But not too much! Still gotta stay true to the character!
Karl Urban: I fused souls with DeForrest Kelly.

About JKR: I do not endorse JKR's beliefs regarding the trans community. My engagement in the Harry Potter community has certainly gone down since she first communicated her (incredibly damaging) stance and started to spread misinformation about trans people.
Harry Potter still has a special place in my heart. It got me through years of my life and was a part of my identity for years.
I continue to engage with the community as a way of taking something that I've loved for years that was stained by its creator and turn it into something beautiful that we can all enjoy again.
