Yep. If they’re really doing that Harry Potter HBO series, they really do need to fix this Ron. The amount of times I’ve had to defend Ron as a very loveable and well written character to fans that have ONLY seen the movies…. Countless times. It was actually exhausting.

His characterisation, representation and development IN THE BOOKS is phenomenal and speaks a lot to why he is one of my favourite fictional characters ever.

In the movies. He was basically Joxer or Xander.

And I mean… I like those characters too but it was clear they were undermining them deliberately to give the HOUSE POINTS to Xena/Gabrielle and Buffy/Willow. And they do the exact same with Ron in that pretty much ALL of what makes him a LOVEABLE and RELATABLE character in the books is given to either Harry or Hermione in the movies to make them look better than they actually were. I mean they’re great characters on their own in the books - don’t get me wrong. But Ron was always my favourite character in the books and my least favourite in the movies. They really did dumb him down to make the other two in the trio smart or heroic or useful and him just idiotic with a mean streak every now and again just for kicks.

So yeah, I think as far as this goes, a fix is overdue. Even if this is the only thing they change. That’s fine. Because Ron was shafted like crazy in the movies compared to the characterisation he got in the books.

In fact he was so well written in the books that he is probably my favourite male fictional character of all-time. Out of any art/entertainment format ever.

Rowling just wrote this wonderfully dynamic male character that you would rarely ever see on TV. And I guess the movie Ron only proves that statement true. Honestly, people need to read books more over just watching TV shows/films or playing video games because books can afford real depth of characterisation because there’s not as many limitations and restrictions as there is in visual media. It’s a format that’s so assessable and versatile that character-focus as well as plot-focus is delivered. You don’t get that with TV shows and film. Especially now.

But yeah, Rowling’s Ron is an incredible character. And I have high standards when it comes to characterisation so that just tells you everything. So I hope HBO delivers us the Ron that should have been which will hopefully by extension fix Ronmione too.

he does. it sorta happened subconsciously i think. im not sure if it started from my interpretation of his character in canon or from myself projecting lol

i think it might be a mixture of both like. the juxtaposition of zoro as a character who is very confident in exactly one area of himself and that is fighting and his strength. like zoro doesnt tend to get jealous until luffy implies someone might be stronger than him. i always think of something the youtube quinn curio said in a video about the umbrella academy talking about the character played by elliot page.

so i often read zoro as someone who thinks he needs to be the strongest so that has value or is allowed to be there

and another part i think is that zoro is a very lonely character. like we learn about kuina and that she died when she was 11 and that shook him so fundamentally that he's essentially living his life to fullfil that promise he made to her. we've seen koushiro and johnny and yosaku but they were very utilitarian. koushiro was his trainer, i dont think zoro ever mentioned him again since the flashback in like what chapter 5? and johnny and yosaku were a good way to bring arlongs bounty up and show the necessity of having a cook on board. sure they care of zoro and he cares about them but there isnt the sense that they are particulary close. zoro doesn't have a family like nami, or someone who seems to have raised him like family like luffy and sanji. if we take movie canon into it as well he'd have another friend from the doji similarly to kuina who he later thought had died due to him not being strong enough

and even now in the more recent manga chapters we see it implied twice that zoro is "a burden" on his crew, both from an antagonist but then also from a crew member. and unlike when sanji and zoro usually bicker, zoro doesnt respond. we have a panel of him flinching about the comment before he grits his teeth and continues.

addtionally during water seven when everyone is falling apart bc of whats going on he's not allowing himself to be vulnerable. we dont see him miserable or angry or sad because he sees his duty as having to hold it together and make sure everyone gets through this. like zoro was just as affected by merry's fate as everyone else but he couldn't show that (or he felt like he couldnt). its an incredibly isolating experience.

there is that manga panel which i might be misinterpreting bc the speech bubbles make it hard to tell who is actually saying it

like "huh you saved me" like he's surprised someone would do that.

but even if in that panel its not zoro saying it we still see himself punishing himself after getting injured in a fight even if he ultimately won. after little garden he trains until his feet bleed again, after the fight with mr one not only does he carry nami around for hours and gets shot while injured already he doesnt let himself recover, and then of course after thriller bark.

i always get the sense that zoro puts an enormous amount of pressure on himself as if he has to justify being there and has huge expectations for himself that he needs to meet.

and not to forget that on shabaody, he had no idea what happened to everyone else. he was the first to leave and for all he knew until they got the message from luffy, everyone died bc he was injured. i think that definitely festered.

Rick, the Time Loop, and Grief

Back to this scene from Solaricks:

Rick placed not only his house (the one he, Diane, and kid!Beth lived in), but the surrounding neighbourhood, inside a Groundhog Day style time loop.

Now, while Rick's attempt at making a time loop was flawed (the residents continued to age whilst in the loop), this feels like Rick was trying to preserve his past, not just trying to create a self-inflicted punishment to be reminded of his past (which AI Diane refers to as "haunting" him).

Rick's time loop is his way of preserving Diane and Beth after their death, and refusing to let go of his grief.

Media essayist Quinn Curio talked about the character arcs used in the Netflix series Gotham, and her talk on Batman's Mr. Freeze articulates it very well:

"Mr. Freeze is a metaphor for never ending grief. Yes, grief can make you numb and cold and robotic, but it goes deeper than that. If you've ever lost someone you were close to, it's very common to have this stage of mourning where you're frozen in [what feels] like this place and time where you cannot comprehend the future and going forward in a world where they can't be with you anymore. It is very painful to have someone be a part of your day-to-day life, and then have to adjust to the fact that you had them for this amount of time, and now that time is over, and this is real, and it's permanent, and you have no control over the situation. And some people in this stage feel like they don't deserve to be here anymore if that person can't be here. And some of those people want to devote their life to mourning and memorialising that person, freezing themselves in a place in time on purpose. So Rick, after 40 years, finally flipping the switch, ending the time loop, symbolises him trying to take the beginning steps of letting go of his grief.

The fact that he does this as he's trying to find and reach Morty is also a nice reflection on how Rick's growing bond and connections with his family are helping him to try and change.
