Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, 1939
Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (4 August 1900 – 30 March 2002) was Queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 to 6 February 1952 as the wife of King George VI.
She was concurrently the last Empress of India until the British Raj was dissolved in August 1947.
After her husband died, she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

I think this photo was taken in 1934/1935, because King George V looked really tired and weak. I find it adorable that Queen Elizabeth in this photo as a child tries to imitate the solemn posture of her grandmother Queen Mary.

The Consort Crown & Coronation Jewels
Queen Camilla has a lot of options for the jewelry that she will wear to her husband's coronation on May 6th. My predictions are based on the jewelry worn by Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and are pretty safe choices. Other than a crown and the ring all of this jewelry is optional and Queen Camilla may decide not to wear all of it or to wear different pieces altogether.
The jewels used in the coronation are some of the most controversial ones the British Royal Family possess. I won't get into their history or what should be done with them here because plenty of others have already covered it. They have already decided to not use the Koh-i-Noor diamond but there are a few others that go along with it that are not as well know that I think should also be set aside this time around.
Queen Mary's Crown
The last few consorts have had new crowns made for them but Queen Camilla has decided to reuse Queen Mary's Consort Crown. It was made in 1911 by Garrard using over two thousand diamonds set in silver and gold. Instead of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, Queen Camilla is using the Cullinan V diamond in the center of the crown like Queen Mary did for her son's coronation in 1937. She is also going to use only four of the eight arches bringing it more in line with the other crowns used in the ceremony. All of the alterations were already possible, they just haven't been used in this exact configuration before.
The Coronation Earrings
The focus is usually on the Koh-I-Noor diamond itself but going with it are the Coronation Earrings. Queen Victoria had them made using the pear shaped diamonds from the sides of the Koh-I-Noor armlet in 1858. It's sometimes a bit confusing because Queen Victoria did not wear them to her coronation but they got the name Queen Victoria's Coronation Earrings later after being worn by Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II at their coronations. Hugh Roberts wrote that Queen Mary also wore them for her husband's coronation but in the pictures it looks like she is wearing her Diamond Collet Earrings made from extra diamonds taken from the Coronation Necklace not these. She could have worn different earrings for the pictures or just worn the tops of the earrings. I think Queen Mary's Diamond Collet Earrings are the better choice but another possibility is that Queen Camilla will wear an entirely different pair of earrings. She doesn't have pierced ears so it may be decided not to alter such old earrings.
The Coronation Necklace
The necklace was made in 1858 by Garrard using diamonds taken from unused garter badges and a sword hilt and can be worn with the Lahore Diamond as a pendant. Like the Coronation Earrings, Queen Victoria didn't actually wear this necklace at her coronation but it has been worn at every one since. Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth II used the pendant but Queen Alexandra and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, did not. I think it's best to not use the Lahore Diamond this time because it’s from the same collection of jewels as the Koh-i-Noor. Queen Elizabeth II regularly wore the Coronation Earrings and the Coronation Necklace with the Lahore Diamond without anyone saying anything or connecting them with the Koh-i-Noor but if there is a chance to avoid controversy they should take it.
Queen Elizabeth's Coronation Necklace
In addition to the Coronation Necklace I would like Queen Camilla to wear Queen Elizabeth's Coronation Necklace. It was a gift from King George VI to his wife for their coronation in 1937 and was worn by her along with the main coronation necklace. Queen Camilla has already worn this necklace and had is shortened from 40 to 31 diamonds. It may need to be lengthened a bit again in order to lay right with the other necklace.
The Buckle Bracelets
Queen Mary had these bracelets made for the 1911 coronation using two diamond and enamel buckles that belonged to King William IV attached to four rows of diamonds each. According to The Queen's Jewels by Leslie Field, one buckle features the cypher of King William IV and the other of Queen Adelaide. Queen Mary also wore them for a few portraits and Queen Elizabeth wore them for her husband's coronation in 1937 but I haven't been able to find any pictures of them being worn since then.
The Diamond Cockade Brooch
This brooch has been worn by the last three Queen Consorts. Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary both wore the full brooch but Mary turned the side sections up so it was V shaped. Queen Elizabeth only wore the central section and I think that's probably how it will be worn by Queen Camilla since the whole piece is pretty massive.
The Consort Ring
This ruby and diamond ring was made for Queen Adelaide to wear to her husband's coronation in 1831 and has been worn by every Queen Consort since. The ring is actually part of the ceremony and will be placed by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Queen Camilla's right hand.
I can’t wait to see what jewels Queen Camilla will wear! What are your predictions?

As a Yank I can’t help but notice that whenever British Monarchists defend the institution of the royal family, they always talk about how it brings in tourism and is respected by people all around the world. Without fail, they’ll always bring up the fact that the monarchy “is” very popular in the United States. They’ll cite that as an example of the monarch’s respect abroad and like…
I genuinely hate to break it to you guys, but we here across the pond view the royals the same way we view mascot characters at Disneyland. Like, there is absolutely zero actual respect. Whenever children in the U.S. learn that the monarchy is still a thing, they are usually confused. Adults then explain the monarchy as “a silly little thing that the Brits do for fun.”
When I was a kid learning about the revolution, I just assumed sight unseen that the British must have had their own revolution at some point and got rid of the king.
When my dad told me that the royal family was an extant institution, I thought it was a joke at first. He liked to kid around, and it just seemed more likely that he was fucking with me. I could not wrap my head around why you would have a queen in the 21st century.
When I first learned how much the UK government gives royal family I was honestly kind of shocked. I had figured that the royal title was so ceremonial as to be completely meaningless in a governmental context. I thought it was like being made a colonel in the state of Kentucky; that being basically just owning a fancy medal that says you are.
And FURTHERMORE, we Yanks (we in a rhetorical sense. Not me lol) were only really crazy about Queen Elizabeth. The moment she died people over here pretty much stopped paying attention to the royal family outside of scandals.
I think people in both countries tend to overestimate the cultural similarities between the United States and the United Kingdom due to our sharing a language. We absolutely do not see the monarchy in the same way its hardline supporters in the U.K. do.
Also while I’m at it, I saw one guy speculating that we loved the Queen because of “Pride at their English heritage” and I also feel I need to clarify that English is pretty much the only heritage in the United States that people are kind of ashamed of. If you only have English heritage here that’s seen as a bad thing. Like, we associate that with like inbred Old Money weirdos and Mormons. Even the Boston Brahmin don’t wanna be seen as having ‘English Heritage.’ I don’t personally feel that way, but that’s sort of the attitude here.

Queen’s memorial could cost £46,000,000
A proposal to erect a £46 million statue of Queen Elizabeth II has come under scrutiny from critics who called it a “horrendous waste of money” given the current economic difficulties facing many British residents, the British government’s press office said on its website.
The cost of the statue is estimated to be equivalent to the salaries of more than 1,000 National Health Service (NHS) nurses, which has prompted calls for the royal family to cover the cost.
Republican pressure group, Republic, has been vocal in opposing the taxpayer-funded project. Graham Smith, the group’s chief executive, condemned the royals for their perceived financial dependence on public funds. Smith said in a statement:
“The royals never pay for anything. It’s just take, take, take. We spend over half a billion pounds on the monarchy every year. We allow them to avoid paying taxes and provide Charles and William with personal incomes of more than £23 million each. Yet, when they want a statue to the Queen, they expect the taxpayer to foot the bill. This has to stop. They can pay for their own statue.”
Smith argued that the statue had no public support and no tangible benefit to the nation, especially at a time when essential public services are struggling. He said:
“There is no public demand for this statue. Support for the monarchy has fallen sharply, and interest in it is low. The UK continues to suffer appalling levels of poverty while our NHS and schools are starved of funding. Yet time and again the royals demand more and more money from the taxpayer.”
Republic’s criticism is backed up by their recent report “Half a Billion Pound Royals” which details the monarchy’s financial burden on British taxpayers. It states that public funding for the royal family exceeds £500 million a year.
Smith demanded wider changes. He said:
“The royals hold the British public in contempt. It’s time we returned the favour and abolished the monarchy.”
Republic, a non-partisan group with more than 130,000 members, favours abolishing the monarchy and establishing a directly elected head of state.
The group argues that such a system would ensure better accountability and representation of the British people.
The government said the cost is preliminary and could change as the project progresses, including upwards.
