have been in a qijiu/qiyuan mood lately, and i was thinking about an au where shen yuan, upon transmigrating, actually loses his memories. he wakes up and has no idea who he is, where he is, who the man at his bedside is. not a clue. the only thing he has is his muscle memory, his sharp recognition senses (he's experiencing a lot of déjà-vu), and blurry fractions of memories that he can't quite make out.
thing is, the memories of both shen yuan and shen jiu aren't actually gone, they start to intermingle, to mix up, a little sister in princess pajamas beside an older brother wearing dirty rags, a bright screen that displays mountain peaks and glittering caves. he's kind and generous the way someone who has never had to worry about food or money is, but he gets vicious and defensive when someone gets too close. sometimes he says cruel things and doesn't even understand why himself.
neither identity fits anymore, both names right and wrong at the same time. it's just... shen qingqiu.
and while everyone else might adjust to this just fine, yue qingyuan does not. because that is shen jiu, but it isn't, but it has to be, but not always. he gets flashes of his childhood friend when shen qingqiu gets viciously defensive over nothing, when he scowls and scoffs and rolls his eyes when he thinks people can't see, but then he smiles, and laughs, and tilts his head in a way that is completely foreign. he likes beasts. shen jiu never liked beasts. but he loves tanghulu, like shen jiu. sweet sugary things. the first time xiao jiu cuddles up into his hug, he cries.
the way he sometimes clings to yue qingyuan when he has a bad day can't be him, but then he says "qi-ge" exactly like shen jiu would and damn near snarls at anyone who gets too close, and he's aggressively possessive the way he was when they were kids. but then he pulls away and apologizes, like shen jiu would never do.
and he never demands anything, scrubbed clean from roughness and filth and selfish want, will act perfect and smiling and pleasant, never burdensome. like he's completely forgotten where he came from, what he was. like the pampered nobleman's son who could afford to be kind. the only time his old self comes fully back up is when he feels threatened or scared or angry, like a trauma response that kicks in to protect himself. and then yue qingyuan starts to wonder if maybe it is. maybe the shen jiu he knows was only ever fear and self-preservation, and the one he is now is a shen jiu without the chains and shackles and scars.
yue qingyuan doesn't know if he's happy for him, if it's for better or for worse. he does know that he feels protective and responsible for this new version xiao jiu has become.
meanwhile shen qingqiu, even when he regains enough of his memories to realize he was once a different person, doesn't know who he is anymore. both, maybe. or neither. he feels bad for taking away yue qingyuan's friend, but in his heart he can't help but think qi-ge is his brother, and no one else's. when he manages the peak he feels like he's taking credit for another's accomplishments, but he remembers suffering for it, he remembers what it took to get there.

Yes, I can be frustrated when plot tension seems to arise solely from characters communicating poorly or refusing to speak to each other at all. Sometimes, the reasons for it don't seem very good or even true to character when they pale in the face of some other threat. Sometimes, it gets drawn out too long and it feels like things would be more interesting if we just moved on to whatever could happen next; I do really like it when characters come together and attempt to solve problems as a team.
And yet, on the other hand, there are situations where I can't agree when someone says, "UGH, why don't they just TALK to each other?!" Because it's like... it's the trauma, bro. It's the shame and the fear and the desire for privacy and control. It's the violence of this world and the LIFE-THREATENING risks of vulnerability. It's potentially another character having a knife to their throat. It's the precarious situation of NOT KNOWING that you're a character in story and that this other character is a decent person who will react with understanding and compassion.
"UGH, why didn't this character just hand someone else their heart and the power to destroy them on a platter?" "UGH, why didn't this character confess to something that has been repeatedly shown to be murderously reviled by most people in this world?" "UGH, why didn't this character just TALK to people when they've been burned before and no one has demonstrated that they're trustworthy, and also they're being threatened to keep them silent?"
Again, miscommunication plots often drive me up the wall, especially when they seem so repetitive. Everyone has a limited tolerance for certain story elements and story elements can definitely be executed poorly. It can be fun to mix things up with characters who throw their issues on the table and demand that someone try to fight them on it, with characters who are open about previous issues but are struggling not to backslide, and with characters who are TRYING to talk it out but can't find the words or the right people to listen. There are many ways to do communication plots! There are many good reasons to complain about these plots! And it's all to personal taste anyway, so I don't begrudge anyone their venting! I can be petty too!
But... also... "UGH, why didn't this character suddenly overcome all of their personal issues in order to effectively spill their guts to someone they have good reason to think wants them dead?" BRUH, COME ON and put yourself in their shoes, PLEASE.

Yue Qingyuan finds Shen Qingqiu objectively more pleasant to be around than before, but he doesn’t like it. Because deep down, he knows this isn’t the person he grew up with. And while he may be more tolerable, this… isn’t the man he’s in love with.

Hey, Tianjiu writers/shippers, have you guys written a modern au where they secretly marry right before adult Bingqiu's wedding which makes them technically siblings like that one reddit post?
If not, you totally should
(Bonus points if there's 79 drama in there too lol)

Doing research for fic writing really opens your mind to new avenues. Because while I can understand why Shen Jiu was envious of Binghe, I'm not sure why he took out his anger on him and not on Ming Fan.
Ming Fan should represent everything Qiu Jianluo had been: a young master of a rich family who used his superior standing to bully and mistreat people who he deems inferior to him.
And it's so telling of the cycle of abuse that Shen Jiu doesn't even think to teach Ming Fan a better way of treating others, no, he enables him.
Shen Jiu recognises the similarities between his past self and Luo Binghe, but he doesn't use this knowledge to help him in the way he himself wasn't helped.
He does the same thing Qiu Jianluo did to him. And he doesn't even realise it.

The thing about QiJiu is that even if the fics will be tagged with fouff and Hurt/comfort those are LIES it's a TRAP.
There is Fluff but then you will be drowned in angst afterwards that you will be like wtf did I read this for then. Cause that's how they work sadly. They hurt each other cause they love each other too much bjt despite their intelligence it deosn't akways equate to EQ. So you're just stuck in horrible pain. There's no simply Hurt/Comfort only Many Hurt/so little comfort for QiJiu fics...
Also they don't talk god I wish they talk to each other but they just don't.

Okay, so I’m working on a fic and was rereading the Shen Jiu and Yue Qingyuan extras and I just realized something.
Before Yue Qingyuan leaves after promising to come back to save Shen Jiu, Shen Jiu asks to look at him one more time. He starts to give a reason why with the phrase “I don’t know whether you will….” before cutting himself off and amending it to “I don’t know how many years will pass before I see you again.”
And Yue Qingyuan laughs and takes it to mean Shen Jiu was going to imply he was going to die then decided not to. And Shen Jiu angrily huffs that Yue Qingyuan was the one who said it, not him, but never actually confirms or denies that this was what he was implying.
But what probably makes more sense is that he was going to say “I don’t know whether you will actually come back for me,” but ends up not saying it because he wants to believe in Yue Qingyuan.
Shen Jiu doesn’t trust easily and he even says right before that he gives all his loyalty to Yue Qingyuan (implying that he finds loyalty worthless, but also still promising it the same).
He’s probably all but convinced himself that nobody would ever come back for him, but if it’s Yue Qingyuan, he’s willing to hold out a little hope.
So of course when he thinks that Yue Qingyuan doesn’t ever come for him, not only does it feel like Yue Qingyuan betrayed him, but it also feels like he betrayed himself.
He forced aside his instincts and told himself he was allowed to believe in one and only one person and that person still let him down.
I’m not saying this pain justifies his actions, but god is he just such a tragic character. I just want to give him a hug and lock him in a room with Yue Qingyuan and force them to talk about their feelings!

Does anyone else wonder if, assuming the SY transmigration in svsss or the Bingge takeover in PIDW never happened, SJ and YQY would have ever figured it out? Would have ever sat down and talked about it and realized the truth in it’s tragic entirety? I really think they would have. It might have taken some tropey nonsense like a truth pollen or something, but I think that with just a bit more time and a slight push they would have gotten there. YQY did eventually get the courage to tell “Shen Qingqiu” the truth after all. There is no reason the same wouldn’t have happened to the actual SJ. At every turn these two had ever possible way they could reconnect foiled.
SJ and YQY are a victim of circumstance in their backstory, but also actively in the story in all it’s version. Bingge killed th me before they could reconcile in PIDW. SY took over SJ’s body (unwillingly of course he can’t really be faulted here) so when YQY did try to reconnect, he spoke to the wrong man.
It is so easy to imagine how they could resolve their issues.
And that’s why it hurts so bad.
