The gender commentary in this novel is lowkey hilarious:

Lecherous!’, but another type of people would often use the female gender as a metaphor such as ‘you cry like a woman’ as if they were laughing because the other made themselves resemble little timid ladies. One could say that it was degrading to be treated like a helpless woman. Feng Xiao despised these sort of discriminations. When one has reached to positions such as Cui Buqu or himself, they know the world and its people. They wouldn’t care whether the other is a man or a woman. To them, there were only two types of people: friends and enemies, and or useful and useless people.

It's essentially that only weak, powerless, small-minded people are concerned with gender and enforcing gender roles. Actual enlightened people, those with the strength and determination to forge their own life paths, judge others based on their skills and attributes rather than their genitalia and assigned sex. Which should be the case! Just did not expect this politic to crop up in a discussion of cross-dressing 😭

Red Cliff Part One Thoughts

I really like the style/design (idk proper terminology) whatever. The sets and the locations! The cinematography. It's all really pretty!

My heart was breaking in literally the very first scene with Emperor Xian and the little birdie and he looked so happy for a single second in his miserable life and then Cao Cao came in and he just went... deflate :(

Speaking of Cao Cao.. he didn't really do it for me. He lacked a certain chaotic pizzazz that I think Cao Cao should have. Like he was just Some Guy who occasionally went into Cartoon Villian mode and it was just a bit... bleh. He looked ok though.

Zhuge Liang is kinda cute and I like his energy. His introduction was fun with the way they had him lying in the grass. Looks-wise he doesn't really fit my image of him (i can't deal with his hair being up all the time for a start) but he's still Blorbo™

ZHAO YUN BABY RESCUE ZHAO YUN BABY RESCUE. I didn't initially know the movie covered Changban but I'm SO glad it does.

Also. He got to cuddle Liu Bei 🥺🥰 (who, I might add, DID NOT YEET HIS SON!!!)

Actually Liu Bei really was just a cute old dad in this 💗

We haven't seen much of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei but I like that Zhang Fei seems to actually have braincells. It's a nice change. Also the scene with Guan Yu reading to the kids towards the end is so fucking cute.

I was a bit confused about Sun Quan already being styled as a prince because I was sure that didn't happen until later? but maybe i'm wrong. He's kinda hot.

I found it a bit weird that Zhuge Liang could just walk up into his face like that because it feels a bit inappropriate to do that to a prince you have literally only just met?

Where is Ziyu? Where is my son??

ZHOU YU??? I HAVE to talk for a long time about Zhou Yu. To me this portrayal is like, the Real™ Zhou Yu. I mean don't get me wrong, I enjoy the petty, competitive little bitch that he often gets portrayed as thanks to Luo Guanzhong, but this dude? He's charming. He's kind. I fell so in love with him. Sure in an ideal world he'd have been more of a prettyboy in the face but hey you can't have everything, and he was still kinda handsome. With a gorgeous smile :)

Oh yeah and the way they introduce him by fixing the flute for that kid. I was like THAT'S HIM THAT'S MY NERD. My HEART.

The romantic and sexual tension between these two is off the charts

They go to see Zhou Yu's pretty wife Xiao Qiao and Zhuge Liang helps her deliver a baby horse... just... because? And they gaze lovingly at each other a bit more

And then they go into a darkened room to have sex play a duet while Xiao Qiao and Lu Su watch on awkwardly.

Then Sun Quan's baby sister Xiaomei shows up and asserts herself as the obligatory Sword Girl™. She insists on being involved in all the action and battle scenes. Which, well, fine I guess. At least she was historically into swords.

Anyway they go hunting and we have to watch a guy almost get eaten by a tiger.

Speaking of girls, after this we have to watch Zhou Yu have ACTUAL sex with his wife (possibly to try and make us forget about his chemistry with Zhuge Liang). Which is fine, I guess. But Xiao Qiao has been pretty much a cardboard cut-out Pretty Wife for most of this. She doesn't have anything inspiring or valuable to say. They don't even mention that she's a good musician too!

Off they all go back to meet Liu Bei + Crew again and they all become FRIENDS and it turns into a really cute buddy movie between Wu and Shu. Liu Bei is WEAVING SHOES.

There's a little bit of dick-measuring, but mostly they all get on and it's cute :)

Then there's a bit long battle or whatever. The most notable moment being Zhou Yu PULLING THE ARROW OUT OF HIS SHOULDER OH GOD WHYYYYY. NOO. WHY WOULD YOU RUIN A PERFECTLY GOOD MOVIE WITH THAT

And then they have a big banquet and Sun Quan decides NOW is the perfect time to propose a marriage between his baby sister and that pathetic old Liu Bei. So she seals Liu Bei's accupoints.

The difference between Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang's reactions to this is very befitting of their characters I think lmao

Cao Cao continues to be a horny vanilla old dick. Zhuge Liang and Xiaomei play with pigeons and have a cute chat. Which feels good to me because I always saw Liangliang as the type that properly respects women.

Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu have a final little chat where they're like "oh gosh I really hope we don't become enemies :(:(:( " and then that's the end!!

Okay, so I finished Peerless volume 2 (aka The Aventures of Sherlock and Poirot - CSI: Ancient China) a few days ago, so I guess I just want to post about it, because it was incredibly so much fun to read! :D Highly recommend it! 😆

Some spoilers (though not very much :)), under the cut:

Okay, so Feng Xiao dressed up as a woman in like half of the book, pretending to be Cui Buqu's wife (because they are in undercover - it this how you say in English? Or incognito?), and also they met a foreign gay princess (now both as men - and they pretending to be a gay couple to make friendships with the prince :D) And also at the same time Qiao Xian dressed up as a man, pretending to be Jinlian's husband, so basically we get like two gay couples pretending to be a straight couple. xD

Okay, there is so much happening in the second book (even better than the first one), there are many exciting and tragic things, too, murdes myteries are continuing... so aaaaahhh, so good! 🥰 Can't wait for the next book!

Writer's Month 2024, Day 1 (‘creek’)

TKA Live Action, An Wenyi/Qiao Yifan. (Rated T for swearing? And, like, implied desire??)

It’s really too cold to be messing around in the water. Qiao Yifan’s mother would be horrified, and even An Wenyi is laughing in mild disapproval from the little wooden bridge. Qiao Yifan finishes unlacing his sneakers anyway. The creek is clear and lovely, with a bed of coloured pebbles, and water-dipped branches swaying all along the bank. Besides, Qiao Yifan hasn’t been hiking since he left school, and his body is unreasonably warm and sweaty—apparently, his regular gym routine counts for little in the face of an actual mountain.

Of course, some of the heat beneath Qiao Yifan’s collar might have more to do with the knowing way Luo Ji had glanced from An Wenyi to Qiao Yifan before heading off with some excuse about catching up with Steamed Bun and Chang Xian.

It definitely has something to do with the way An Wenyi’s hands and eyes have been lingering all weekend—have been lingering for a long time, really, but never with such wilful openness as now, and Qiao Yifan—

Qiao Yifan isn’t so ignorant of his own desires. He knows exactly what’s set his skin to sticky-heated fizzing.

The sight of An Wenyi’s lower arms—bare and handsome, with An Wenyi’s jacket taken off and slung around his hips, and An Wenyi’s sweater sleeves pushed up—is really just the final straw.

Doubly so, when An Wenyi casually crosses his arms upon the bridge’s handrail, looks over at Qiao Yifan, and smirks.

‘You’re going to freeze,’ An Wenyi says.

Qiao Yifan grins. The creek is unbelievably pretty, and An Wenyi is so beautifully smug. Qiao Yifan puts his socks in his shoes, and rolls up his jeans to his knees. He imagines striding through the water and reaching boldly; he imagines tugging An Wenyi down and forward—just a little, just a bit—just enough to lean up and catch An Wenyi’s smirk with a kiss.

In reality, Qiao Yifan yelps when his feet hit the water and the colds hits him. It’s punchy enough to smack the air from his lungs, just for a second, and then he’s gasping and giggling, and striding through the water with childish, stomping kicks—not to steal a kiss but to see whether movement will make the icy temperature any less wretched. (It doesn’t.) His feet are uncomfortably numb by the time he’s reached the bridge, and his legs aren’t much better, and maybe that’s why he drags himself up onto the railing, laughing and breathless, while An Wenyi huffs and plants a blocking palm across the middle of Qiao Yifan’s face.

Qiao Yifan rests the dead weight of his feet on barely warm timber. He grins with teeth at the searing heat of An Wenyi’s hand. ‘It’s fucking freezing. Let me up.’

‘Fuck off,’ An Wenyi laughs. He’s shaking off the water Qiao Yifan’s kicking has sprinkled across him. ‘You splashed me. You can get out the same way you got in, no bridge for you.’

An Wenyi pushes his hand against Qiao Yifan’s face like they’re school kids. For a second, Qiao Yifan thinks about blowing an obnoxiously wet raspberry in retaliation. Then Qiao Yifan shifts his face stubbornly, cool lips against warm palm, and immediately he’s back to grown-up and wanting.

Qiao Yifan says, speech against skin, ‘I could bite you.’

Qiao Yifan can’t really see An Wenyi, not with An Wenyi’s hand in the way; still, he can hear the gratifying little noise An Wenyi makes. He can hear the return of An Wenyi’s smirk, too, when An Wenyi presses a little closer and asks, ‘Just to be clear… was that a threat or an incentive?’

Qiao Yifan grins. He feels like kicking again. He feels like laughing and reaching and being bold. He feels like the shift of An Wenyi’s hand is too intentional, too—that the way An Wenyi crooks his thumb down to brush at the corner of Qiao Yifan’s mouth is far too deliberate to dismiss.

Qiao Yifan touches his tongue between his dry lips. He catches his bottom lip—dampened and warm, and just as carefully deliberate—against the tip of An Wenyi’s thumb.

An Wenyi’s free hand settles in at the nape of Qiao Yifan’s neck and presses firmly. Qiao Yifan smirks and shivers. Qiao Yifan says, ‘Let me up and maybe I’ll show you.’

Qiao Yifan could pretend to be surprised by just how swiftly he goes from chilly to toasty once he’s got his back pressed up against the handrail and his smirk caught in a kiss, but—let’s be honest—it’s not really that surprising at all.

Starting from the upper, Gyarados & Diao Qiao Yiao. Father Gyarados is the head of the Zi Fou Clan. He is two time Olympian in the martial arts heavy weight division. Gold medals out the cutlass, now a days; he holds down a prosperous dojo that teaches a multitude of twenty plus styles. The main ones being Fu Jow Pai & Ziu Ba Xian Quan. These two will be newcomers to the tournament. Zyn Wang & Kid Black, father & son. Rival international dojos of the Zi Fou Clan, Zyn Wang & Kid Black represent the Goju He Clan. A prosperous dojo that has history with the Olympics as well; but Zyn Wang could never gold medal over Gyarados. Dojo still the bomb though, trains & disciplines in over twenty styles. Main ones being Open Palm Dragon Prayer & Ninjitsu. These two will be newcomers to the tournament. Jiesu & LuRish represent the Shine Temple, it's located in a Thai Colony based on Planet Ongree. This colony holds an entire nation's worth of jungle & mountain terrain. Jiesu is the current Grand Master of the Shine Temple. Occasionally he will sneak off to put in work at the Deadly Arts Tournament, no one else associated with the temple has entered the tournament for more than thirty years; besides him. He will spill the beans once it becomes popular. Solid U, Gastelum, Wettser, Knock Knire, Hallgun & Lil Pain are all mixed martial artist associated with King Glory Fighters. The most acclaimed martial arts league of Planet Earth, international with it. These six are the most highest ranked of the league; light, middle & heavy weight divisions. Two from each. The kicker is, all six of them are mermen. Kai Inzi & Hawkridge are two heroes with a league called Colors. Usually referred to as Colors & Em, each member boast the irregular attributes of colorful hair & eyes; across the spectrum of all colors. Kai Inzi will be one of their latest recruits, he is directly being trained by Hawkridge. Their relationship will develop from colleagues to lust to love; somehow over the eight seasons of this story. Larimynth & Sunnisojin are fairies, legendary fairies who have discovered immortality & spend their livelihood looking after all of the enchanted objects of existence. Filing system is bananies honestly & would have you a part of their fandom too. Legends precede them all the time to where they have to be powerful enough to protect themselves. If they happen to be carrying a key item of super importance; they'll need to be able to protect themselves from any kind of threat. Besting them once is all they will allow… Jiana Veronica & Kelsie Millions are two porn models that will be new comers to the tournament. Both are of the super natural kind, just like everyone else; but they have kept their identities a secret their entire lives. For the purpose of becoming more powerful, they will figure out the location of the tournament eventually & surprise the fuck out of the masses. Again… Lastly… Nyvra & Pepper I are world class models across catalogue, high fashion, runway & spokes divisions. They are best friends of the same pedigree; but two different worlds. It was a fateful meeting when they were put together for a specific photoshoot. Been inseparable ever since, the exposing of Deadly Arts will bring their friendship closer. Will also take the danger levels up too.

Xiao Lu: I haven't wanted an antagonist dead this badly since Xue Xiuzhuo from QJJ, A+ villainy!

Feng Xiao: a narcissistic bastard but just beneath the label of rat bastard

Cui Buqu: a bastard only kept in line by the limits of his sickly body (and even then...)

Feng Xiao x Cui Buqu: I love when assholes get together, like yes! keep your toxicity contained within your relationship! Love that for y'all 💖

Honorable mentions:

Emperor and Empress: for once no one made any stupid moves, so you and your kids and your grandkids got to live. Praise 🙌

Princess Leping: it is only be the grace and wits of your parents that you survived. The most unintelligent character of the novel, but she lived I guess 😒

Probably one of my top reads of the year. Idk if Meng Xi Shi has written any other works, but this one far outshines Thousand Autumns, and I loved that novel. This one is less about the martial world side of things and religious/philosophical discourse, but if what you want is a romance (with a nice side of political intrigue), then this is the novel you should start with. Feng Xiao and Cui Buqu are also so perfect for each other as they are simultaneously probably thr worst people they each know and also the most devoted to the other while refusing to openly admit it. Their characters were a delight separately and as a pair. The range of villains as well as their different, sometimes conflicting motivations also kept the story engaging and suspenseful as you never knew what wrench was gonna come out of the dark to wack you upside the head. Really, there was not a dull moment to be had in this novel!

The fan translation is fine but riddled with a bunch of minor grammar mistakes and word mixups ("he greeted his teeth" instead of "he gritted his teeth," as one example). I'm looking forward to how the official will clear up these mistakes. As of now, the fan translations are still up, but the novel has been licensed by 7seas and is currently releasing:

In this drama, Zheng Yecheng played the role of Gao Mai, a high school student who, together with Luo Jianjun, played by Zhang Guoli, formed a "father and son on the road" duo. This was Zheng Yecheng's first time playing an important role that spanned the entire series.
