South Korea’s president declares emergency martial law
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in an unannounced late-night televised address, accusing the opposition of plotting with North Korea.
To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements… I hereby declare emergency martial law.
However, Yoon did not announce what measures the government would take. He referred to the opposition Democratic Party’s proposal to impeach top prosecutors and reject the government’s budget proposal.
Through this martial law, I will rebuild and protect the free Republic of Korea, which is falling into the depths of national ruin. I will eliminate anti-state forces as quickly as possible and normalise the country.
Responding to the leader’s announcement, the defence ministry called a meeting of “key commanders.” The military blocked the entrance to the South Korean parliament, denying access even to lawmakers, according to South Korean media.

North Korea tests another ‘underwater nuclear attack drone’ - SUCH TV
North Korea claimed on Saturday it had tested another underwater nuclear attack drone, in its latest response to South Korean and United States military drills, though analysts have questioned whether Pyongyang has such a weapon. In recent weeks, North Korea has tested what state media have described as an underwater nuclear-capable drone, and also carried out the launch of an intercontinental…

“Doomed Yaoi still in the honey moon phase. The KCNA described their first meeting as “emotion-charged”, they’ve given each other sooo many gifts (including a very expensive car from Putin and two dogs from Kim), another KCNA quote: “a clear demonstration of the special relations of friendship between the top leaders of the DPRK and Russia”, apparently Putin’s hospitality towards Kim “transcended custom” (whatever the fuck that means) last time Kim visited Russia. The last three or so times they’ve met with each other they keep fucking hugging?? like not even that weird professional pat on the back half hug like full on embrace 😭 Kim Jong Un drove Putin in Putin’s private car to the guesthouse that he was staying in, they’ve seen a bunch of shows together. This fucking insane quote about the message Putin sent Kim: “The message hoped Kim Jong Un would not forget that he is an honoured guest Russia always waits for.” Kim said he could feel “special emotion” from Putin when he sent him a sympathy message during the floods in the dprk. Kim addresses Putin as “My closest comrade” in his letters to him and apparently celebrated Putin’s birthday in Pyongyang with his friends?? Oh and last time Putin left the dprk he had his hands and face pressed against the fucking windows of the plane looking like a kicked puppy as Kim Jong Un waved him off. They make me sick. I hate them.”

There are mounting suspicions that former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun intended to justify the declaration of martial law or a state of united defense by instigating a military conflict with North Korea by ordering strikes on the sites from which the North was launching trash-filled balloons and flying unmanned drones to Pyongyang. Democratic Party lawmaker Park Beom-kye revealed Monday that he received a tip-off from a military whistleblower that the unmanned drones North Korea claimed Seoul had sent to Pyongyang in October were indeed sent on orders of the South Korean military — more specifically, on the orders of the former defense minister.

finally watched watched my brothers and sisters in the north when it's been in my to-watch list for years and it was so touching and so beautiful.
the people interviewed were of course handpicked and have better conditions than other people because of the impact of U.S. sanctions and such, but it genuinely inspired me how hard-earned their good living conditions are. the farmers had to work really hard to re-establish agriculture after the war and now they get so much food a year they donate most of it to the state because they simply don't need it. the girl at the sewing factory loves her job and gets paid with 14 kilos of food a month on top of her wages. the water park worker is proud of his job because 20,000 of his people can come and enjoy themselves every day, and Kim Jong-un himself took part in designing it and came by at 2am during construction to make sure everything was going smoothly. his grandmother's father was a revolutionary who was executed and buried in a mass grave in seoul but in the dprk he has a memorial bust in a place of honor and his family gets a nice apartment in pyongyang for free.
imperialist propaganda always points to the kim family as a dictatorship and a cult of personality but from this docu it's so obvious that it's genuine gratitude for real work for the people, and simple korean respect. if my president came to my work and tried his best to make my working conditions better and to make my life better, i would call him a dear leader too. if my president invented machines and designed amusement parks and went to farms all over the country to improve conditions for the people, i would respect him.
the spirit of juche is in self-reliance, unity of the people, and creative adaptations to circumstances. the docu rly exemplified the ideology in things like the human and animal waste methane systems powering farmers' houses along with solar panels, how they figured out how to build tractors instead of accepting unstable foreign import relationships, and how the water park uses a geothermal heating system.
it rly made me cry at the end when the grandma and her grandson were talking about reunification. the people of the dprk live every day of their lives dreaming of reunification and working for reunification, and it's an intergenerational goal that they inherited from their parents and grandparents. the man said he was so happy to see someone from the south, and that even though reunification would have its own obstacles that we have the same blood the same language the same interests so no matter what if we have the same heart it would be okay.
and the grandma said "when reunification happens, come see me." and it's so upsetting that not even 10 years later, the state has been pushed into somewhat giving up on this hope. the dprk closed down the reunification department of the government last year and it broke my heart.
a really good pairing with the 2016 film is this 2013 interview with ambassador Thae Youngho to clarify political realities in the dprk and the ongoing U.S. hostility that has shaped the country's global image. the interviewer Carlos Martinez asks a lot of excellent questions and the interview goes into their military policy, nuclear weapons, U.S. violence and sanctions, and the dprk's historical solidarity with middle eastern countries like syria and palestine and central/south american countries like nicaragua, bolivia, and cuba.

North Korea is now poised to invade Ukraine.
In this war, Russia has used the territory of other countries by which to attack Ukraine, acquired weapons from other countries, recruited from other countries, and will now field a unit wearing the uniform of a foreign power. Russia threatens nuclear war against countries that do less than that to aid Ukraine.
If anything, this justifies more direct NATO intervention on behalf of Ukraine. Not troops on the ground, as Ukraine has made it clear this is its fight, but closer collaboration in intelligence and targeting, not to mention full permission to use Western ordinance to strike within Russia. It is time for the gloves to come off and to stop forcing Ukraine to fight with an arm tied behind its back.

South Korea on Monday demanded the immediate pullout of North Korean troops allegedly deployed in Russia as it summoned the Russian ambassador to protest deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. South Korea’s spy agency said Friday it had confirmed that North Korea sent 1,500 special operation forces to Russia this month to support Moscow’s war against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier said his government had intelligence that 10,000 North Korea soldiers were being prepared to join invading Russian forces. During a meeting with Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev, Vice South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun “condemned in the strongest terms” North Korea’s troop dispatch that he said poses “a grave security threat” to South Korea and the international community, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

North Korea sends 250 new missile launchers towards South Korean border
North Korean border guards have received 250 launchers for new ballistic missiles. Kim Jong Un called the new equipment the army’s “key offensive weapon,” Korean media reported.
The olive green mobile launchers were displayed during a special “handover” ceremony in the capital Pyongyang on Sunday, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.
Before the ceremony, Kim Jong Un inspected the launchers, which are being “put into service as a new key offensive weapon of the North Korean armed forces,” and then ordered them to be handed over to the border guards.
Tumblr media
Kim Jong Un called the new equipment “another stepping stone to add great vitality to the North Korea’s name and national flag and sharply enhance the North Korea’s national prestige, which will display might as a powerful sword to defend national sovereignty and safeguard peace.”
The missile launchers are “advanced tactical attack weapons,” Kim said in his speech.
Tumblr media
Tactical and technical specifications of the launchers and missiles were not given. However, Bloomberg, citing military experts, reported that the launchers in question are probably those capable of launching Hwasong 11D short-range ballistic missiles. The missile was tested at a distance of 100 to 300 kilometres. It is noted that they are capable of hitting targets in most of South Korea.
Tumblr media
According to Han Kwon-hee, a spokesman for the Korea Defence Research Association, this was the first time North Korea has made public the scale of arms deliveries to its border units, AFP reported.
Tumblr media
North Korea has conducted a number of ballistic missile tests since the beginning of the year. In early July, North Korea’s General Administration of Rocket Science conducted a successful test of the new Hwasong-11 tactical ballistic missile. The new missile has an ultra-large warhead weighing 4.5 tonnes. The missile has a maximum range of 500 kilometres.

It makes me nervous knowing that they and their fellow graduates are serving in the military at such a dangerous moment. It was chilling to read this news posted on the BBC website yesterday.
In a report published last week for 38 North, a US-based organisation with a focus on North Korea, former State Department official Robert Carlin and nuclear scientist Siegfried S Hecker said they saw the situation on the Korean Peninsula as "more dangerous than it has ever been" since the start of the Korean War in 1950.
"That may sound overly dramatic, but we believe that, like his grandfather in 1950, Kim Jong Un has made a strategic decision to go to war," it said.
"We do not know when or how Kim plans to pull the trigger, but the danger is already far beyond the routine warnings in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo about Pyongyang's 'provocations'."
No one will benefit from a fresh outbreak of war on the Korean peninsula and BTS members are now on the front line of any aggression. Although it is difficult to see at the moment, I hope there is a way back from the brinkmanship that currently characterizes North-South relations.

North Korea fires ballistic missile ahead of US-South Korea drills - SUCH TV
North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile on Thursday, Seoul’s military said, Pyongyang’s latest show of force just days before South Korea and the United States kick off major joint military exercises. Relations between the two Koreas are at one of their worst points in decades, with the nuclear-armed North conducting ever more provocative banned weapons tests as Seoul moved to ramp up…

North Korea could lose 30,000 to 45,000 troops per month in Ukraine after sending more soldiers to the frontlines, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)'s Russian offensive campaign assessment published on January 22.
Why It Matters
Pyongyang will reportedly send additional troops to the battlefield by mid-March, and if they maintain the current pace of assaults in Kursk, they may suffer significant losses, the Washington-based think tank said in it's recent assessment.
The ISW's prediction that North Korea could lose up to 45,000 soldiers per month indicates that they are not capable of sustaining the war effort in Kursk, suggesting they are not prepared for battle. Further, the sustained losses of troops will only add to Russia's manpower problem and could possibly sour relations between Moscow and Pyongyang.
What To Know
An anonymous senior U.S. defense official told the New York Times that North Korean reinforcements are expected to arrive "within the next two months," but they did not specify the number of troops, if Pyongyang is rotating its forces, or if they are increasing the size of its total force grouping in Russia.
South Korea previously reported in late December that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will deploy more troops and send additional equipment to Russia after North Korea suffered significant losses. Russia has previously dismissed reports of North Korean troops fighting in Kursk as "fake news."
Noting the time period in which North Korean troops reportedly trained for at least a month in eastern Russia before engaging in battle, the ISW wrote: "This timeline roughly coheres with the possibility that a fresh contingent of North Korean forces could undergo training and replace the shrinking North Korean group in Kursk Oblast by mid-April 2025, assuming the reported next batch of North Korean troops will train for the same duration as their predecessors, and deploy to Russia imminently in late January or early February 2025."
The ISW predicted that additional DPRK troops are "unlikely to decisively improve Russian operations" and will suffer about 30,000 to 45,000 casualties per month if they "sustain Russia's tempo of operations despite heavy losses."
Part of the issue stems from a lack of ability to communicate between the two forces. In addition to two alleged clashes between the allied forces due to "troop identification errors," a Ukrainian commander claimed that North Korean troops had added a translator who speaks Russian, but suggested that "these groups are still not very effective."
As such, the ISW assessed that "North Korea's high casualty rate and interoperability difficulties with Russian forces will affect the lessons that the North Korean military command will learn from fighting in Russia's war."
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said that 3,800 North Korean troops had been killed or injured in Kursk in early January, as the fighting has escalated on the frontlines.
A total of 12,000 North Korean soldiers were initially deployed to Russia and were first reported to have engaged in battle in November 2024. As they had not engaged in serious combat since 1953, the troops appeared underprepared and therefore have sustained such high casualties.
What People Are Saying
Anton Gerashchenko, the former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "North Korea will soon send a new group of military personnel to the war against Ukraine, The New York Times reported, citing the Pentagon. Reinforcements are expected "within the next two months," according to one senior U.S. defense official. Overall, North Korea's armed forces number 1.2 million. It is one of the largest regular armies in the world. Last fall, North Korea sent about 11,000 soldiers to aid Moscow's forces in the Kursk region of southern Russia."
"Since their first combat engagement in early December, roughly one-third of the North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded, Ukrainian and American officials said," Gerashchenko added. "Even before it sent troops to Russia, North Korea was a major supporter of Russia's war effort. It has sent Moscow millions of artillery shells — which now account for about half of the Russian munitions fired daily — and more than 100 short-range ballistic missiles, according to Western and Ukrainian intelligence officials."
In a previous comment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described reports of North Korean troops on the frontlines as "contradictory," saying: "North Korea is our close neighbor, our partner, and we are developing our relations in all areas. This is our sovereign right. This should not worry anyone because this cooperation is not directed against third countries."
Peskov added: "[Moscow would] continue to develop this cooperation."
What Happens Next
It is unknown how Ukraine and the global powers will respond if North Korea deploys additional troops and equipment to Russia and if the DPRK troops aid Moscow in seizing more territory.

wait you think North Korea is good?
I don't think North Korea is a perfect socialist utopia, no. But it's also not a dystopian hellscape either. It is a third world country, but it's a third world country because the United States ensures that it stays a third world country with incredibly cruel sanctions. Because they're closed off, US reporting on North Korea primarily comes from South Korean sources...and surely you can understand why that's problematic. Basically 90% of what you've heard about North Korea as an American is total and complete bullshit.
Their military aggression can also be explained by the fact that the United States invaded them, killed a quarter of their population, ruined a third of their farmland, and destroyed EIGHTY percent of all buildings in Pyongyang. Then we divided their country in half, established a puppet state immediately to their south (South Korea only has control over their own military in peacetime - guess who takes over in the event of combat), and run annual military exercises on their border to intimidate them. Wouldn't you be military aggressive if you had to go up against the world's superpower like that?
Anyway, if you want to start unlearning the lies you've been taught, here are some good places to start:
