In Paradox Rodea's dimension...

"This was a great idea, Rodea. Since Dr. Star line took over my lab in my dimension, I can use the lab here for resources and materials..."

"Yeah... I'm glad this lab can be put to good use after..."

Rodea looks down, clearly saddened.

"...I'm really sorry about your Mr. Tinker, Rodea..."

"It's fine... He died saving this dimension... He was a hero...

"Anyway, we better continue bringing resources to SciLab."

With the help of Emerl, Gamma, and Terios, Mr. Tinker and Rodea began moving the materials and resources to Mr. Tinker's lab. In the middle of it, they heard something in the sky.

"UNIDENTIFIED FLYING FORTRESS DETECTED."

"Hey! It's Vanilla's Flying Bakery!"

"Did you say 'Vanilla's Flying Bakery?!'"

Up in the flying house, Vanilla's voice could be heard on the intercom.

"Greetings, everyone! We have a new, special treat for you today. My daughter made strawberry and cream pie. I hope you enjoy it!"

"Strawberry and cream pie? That sounds awesome... Really wish I could eat so I can try some."

"I knew Cream and her mother were great cooks, but I never imagined they'd have a flying fortress to sell their baked goods."

"Funny enough, the Mr. Tinker of this dimension built it for them... And Vanilla doesn't actually sell them. She goes around looking for poor and homeless people who could use a meal..."

"That sounds like Cream and Vanilla, alright. Those two are like purity incarnate."

"INTENTIONS REGISTERED AS GOOD. HOWEVER, ERROR IN LOGIC DETECTED. THEIR BUSINESS CAN'T CONTINUE IF THEY RUN OUT OF RESOURCES."

"You have a point there, Gamma. Rodea, is anyone funding their flying bakery?"

"Oh, gosh... You're right... The Mr. Tinker of my dimension was originally funding them, as well as making sure to give the flying fortress a check up every so often... But with him gone..."

"That shouldn't be a problem! We could have Welch fund them. She loves helping people, and she has plenty of resources to spare. Plus, with her help, Cream and Vanilla can help people in need both here AND the rest of the Multiverse. It's a win-win!"

"Terios, my boy, that's an ingenious idea! You make your father so proud!"

"This also means we'll have Cream and Vanilla as part of the crew, too!"

And so, Rodea flew up to the flying bakery to explain the plan to them. Both grateful to him, as well as happy to see Rodea again after so long, the Rabbit residence accepted the offer and they met up with Welch, who was also on board with the idea. And soon enough...

"There! All done! Everything is set, so you can continue giving out food to the poor all across the Multiverse with no issue! I'll gladly provide any resources you need, Mr. Tinker and the other scientist will give your flying bakery maintenance whenever needed, and Emerl here will serve as bodyguard whenever you go out so you'll stay safe out there! Plus, my employees in the food department will provide extra help for you whenever you need it."

"Thank you so much, Miss Vineyard! We really appreciate it!"

"My pleasure! Glad to have you as part of the team!"

(Cream. Cheese, Vanilla, and Chocola have joined the party!)

Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination

Given the general theme and when this is coming out, you would expect more Wonka references, butit didn’t occur to me until just now. Oh well. Once again it’s time to take a trip to the movie theater to have a Precure adventure on the big screen. It’s another good one, and puts a different spin on the Precure movie exclusive upgrade that will set a precedent for films to come. So let’s dig in!

The Plot

The film starts with a brief skit by the fairies, in a more limited, puppet show-esque art style. It casts Syrup as a giant monster, with paper wings and seaweed eyebrows, attacking Milk before Coco and Nuts show up and transform into Precures to defeat him with giant mame daifuku and chou cremes. It’s very silly. After that they do a similar lesson as in the first film, introducing the Miracle Light 2 and explaining how to use it. Once again, when they warn not to swing it around in case you hit your neighbor, there’s an exaggerated detail shot of a battered fairy: Syrup and Nuts in this case. It’s so out there for Precure and makes me laugh.

After that, the movie kicks off properly. It’s Nozomi’s birthday and everyone is setting up for a party at Natts House while she sleeps. Coco gently wakes her, teases her for her sleeping habits, and then declares that she looked like Sleeping Beauty. Nozomi is enamored by this comparison and fantasizes a little bit about being awoken by a kiss. Coco teases her further by asking if he should have kissed her awake like in the story, causing Nozomi to become extremely flustered and deny this. Coco claims he was just kidding, so they go and join the birthday festivities.

As they’re about to cut the cake, an oven suddenly appears out of nowhere, and out of it comes a girl who introduces herself as Princess Chocola of the Sweets Kingdom. Coco and Nuts know her, and this makes Milk act jealous. Chocola is being chased by Bunbee, who turns Nozomi’s birthday cake into a Hoshiina to capture her, so the girls transform to fight. As usual, this is where you really see where the film budget is going, as the cures jump around and attack in duos with punches, kicks, and their special moves. At one point they topple the cake monster onto Bunbee, who teleports away, and they finish it off with Rainbow Rose Explosion. As thanks for their efforts, Chocola transports everyone to the Sweets Kingdom, which is a land where everything is made of candy or confections, and says she wants to take them to the castle. There’s a quick cut to the throne room in the castle, where Bunbee talks to the Queen and reveals he brought the Precures as requested and asks for payment, but he is chased out by the Queen’s two advisors, Dry and Bitter Amidst this, the Queen declares she’s going to eat the sweets of Precure.

Finally, about 20 minutes into the film, the opening theme plays over a montage of everyone trying out all kinds of sweets from all over the kingdom on their way to the castle, which is on top of a giant layer cake. There’s a brief scare when Karen points out that eating all these sweets will make them fat, but Princess Chocola assures them that Sweets Kingdom snacks don’t make you fat. Dry and Bitter show up to continue escorting the girls around the kingdom, while they instruct Chocola to take all the fairies to the castle. She seems uncomfortable, but does as she’s told. Dry and Bitter try to sow discord, acting disdainful for sweets and the enjoyment of them. At one point they criticize Nozomi for picking run-of-the-mill cream puffs to give to Coco instead of something more unique to this world, but she’s not bothered, and Rin also explains to them that Coco loves cream puffs so he will appreciate the sentiment. The two aides don’t really understand. Eventually, the obvious villains make their move: they lure the girls to different locations and then kidnap them, with the objective of turning them into sweets. Dry takes Rin and Karen to the freezer, intent on transforming them into ice cream. Bitter takes Urara and Komachi to the oven to become cookies.

While this is happening, Coco and Nuts are about to enter the castle’s throne room, but they can tell that Chocola is hiding something and they coax her to explain what’s happening. She almost speaks up, but before she can come clean, they’re all summoned into the Queen’s chamber. The throne room is dark and dilapidated, with rubble on the floor and huge bites taken out of all the pillars. Chocola is clearly scared of her mother, who quickly captures Nuts, Syrup, and Milk while implying that she’ll soon eat the Precure. Chocola runs away from the castle in tears, passing by a lonely Nozomi who is looking for her friends. Nozomi can’t ignore a crying girl (in her own words) and tries to find out why the princess is upset, but before she can get an answer, a masked person shows up to fight her.

“I’m not Coco, Coco doesn’t wear a mask!”

The audience will immediately realize that the enemy is Coco, but Nozomi doesn’t seem to recognize him. He declares that she is the last Precure and the others will soon be dead. The five girls, in their separate environments, transform into Precure. They put up good fights but are overpowered and begin to turn into sweets, with Cure Dream becoming chocolate. The fairies manage to free themselves and rush to save Dream and Coco, successfully separating Dream from her opponent. When they’re safe, Syrup accuses Chocola of betraying them, but all the nearby citizens defend her, with the justification that her sweets still taste good, so she can’t be a bad person. (This will be somewhat important later.) Mailpo also tells Syrup that Chocola helped free them all. The princess reveals to Cure Dream that a bad person called Mushiban is controlling her mother and she’s too scared to confront him. However, she does pull out her Miracle Light and restore Dream’s chocolate arm to normal. Dream encourages Chocola to be brave for the sake of her friends and family, and so they fly back to the castle to save the Queen. Dark Coco ambushes them mid-flight, so Dream takes him on while Chocola goes to rescue her mother.

Dream’s duel with Dark Coco is intercut with shots of her teammates having been completely converted to sweets, but as she espouses how much she wants to spend time with them and hang out and do normal friend things, her strong feelings reach her friends.

They manage to break free from their sugary prisons, quickly turning the tides on Dry and Bitter and defeating them. When Dream is almost completely turned to chocolate, Dark Coco tries to kiss her, mockingly, but she breaks his grip. He removes his visor and reveals his identity to Dream, who stops fighting back now that she knows who he is. She pivots to dodging and running from his attacks while calling his name, hoping to break through to him. Ultimately it’s revealed that he’s actually being puppeteered by Mushiban through a gem on his chest. Mushiban uses Coco’s latent power to summon a Black Fleuret and continues to attack. However, Dream is starting to get through to him, and the gem controlling him begins to crack. Dark Coco moves in for the final blow against Dream, but freezes as Coco fights for control of his body. Dream quickly moves in to kiss him, causing the controlling gem to completely shatter, and he falls to the ground, exhausted..At last fully awake and freed from the spell, he thanks Nozomi profusely for saving him..

Meanwhile, Chocola makes it to the throne room, where she runs into Kurumi and asks for  help taking down the bad person controlling her mother. A furious Mushiban leaves his hiding space behind the throne room, declaring his contempt for the values of courage, hope, and love that the Cures were going on about, just as Kurumi and Chocola arrive in the chamber. Chocola goes to save her mother while Kurumi transforms into Milky Rose and fights the villain. Their battle takes them all around the throne room, exchanging blows, breaking even more pillars, and threatening to bring the roof down. At several points Rose barely avoids Mushiban’s attacks. Chocola avoids the falling rubble and pleads to her mother, and the controlling gem in the Queen’s tiara begins to crack like Coco’s did. She talks about all the things she wants to learn from her mother, like tasty sweets, smiles, and love, and this seems to really get through to her.

Mushiban tries to step in to once again decry this nonsense, but Milky Rose chastises him for interrupting, and summons the Milky Mirror to perform Milky Rose Metal Blizzard. Mushiban gets buried in a pile of rubble and an exhausted Milky Rose reverts all the way back to Milk. At the same time, Chocola tells her mother she loves her, and the controlling stone crumbles, freeing the Queen. Mushiban isn’t down for the count yet, as he rises from the rubble and expresses his desire to eat delicious sweets while slowly moving towards the Queen. The other Precures all arrive to block his path, and the Queen explains that she has made him plenty of sweets, the reason he isn’t satisfied is because he has no heart. He doesn’t like this answer, so he begins powering up, intending to bring the entire Sweets Kingdom down.

The cake and the castle atop it are split down the middle, pierced by a giant tower twice as tall as the cake mountain. The sky outside turns dark and rubble falls on the land, endangering innocent bystanders. Queen Dessert creates a platform to transport the Cures to the top of the cake, and Chocola accompanies them. They meet Mushiban at the top of his tower, preparing to destroy the entire Land of Sweets. He declares that their battle will be a test of their ideals: his desire to devour everything against the love, courage, and hope of the Cures and the Queen and princess.

Then the fight begins. Mushiban has the upper hand, throwing the Cures around with a mix of chops, blocks, grabs, kicks, and light energy attacks, and mocking their so-called strength. He summons a huge ball of energy and directs it at the ground, causing it to expand out in every direction. Dream runs back to protect Chocola, so she takes the brunt of the attack while the others are knocked aside. Mushiban declares there’s no more hope, courage, or love left, but Chocola rejects this, insisting these values will never go away, and her Miracle Light glows. She calls upon the strength of her friendship with Nozomi, and asks everyone to give their power to Cure Dream. Power flows to the top of the tower, and on the ground Queen Dessert asks everyone to use their Miracle Lights and combine their strength. Everyone channels their energy and it flows into Dream as she stands up to Mushiban and smiles. The power upgrades her into an all white version of her Cure outfit and she grows angel wings, reintroducing herself as the miraculous light of blooming feelings, Shining Dream.

Mushiban, still refuting her values, has ditched most of his armor and takes Shining Dream on in tight pants and a midriff-exposing tank top as he summons a beam sword. Shining Dream explains that sweets taste the best when shared with friends, and she wants to share all her feelings, good and bad, with her friends. She summons her own blade, the Starlight Fleuret, and flies around Mushiban, clashing blades with him as she explains that her powers blossom when she’s being cheered on. Shining Dream manages to break his guard and performs her special attack: Precure Starlight Solution. She becomes light itself, piercing Mushiban with dozens of beams before reassembling on the other side. Finally defeated, he begins to dissolve, and asks if it’s true that sweets taste better when shared. Nozomi affirms this, and he disappears into gold dust, smiling, having found peace too late. All the damage to the kingdom gradually fades away as the sky clears.

Later, the kingdom is having a birthday party for Nozomi. Chocola presents Nozomi with a new birthday cake, admitting she got some help from her mother. The queen thanks them all for saving the kingdom, and they all pop confetti cannons to finally wish Nozomi a happy birthday. She turns to face the camera and thanks everybody as the ending credits begin to play.

The ending credits have Chocola standing in front of the cake mountain, holding a flip notebook with pictures of the party. They collectively tell a rather funny story on their own:

Bunbee is seen standing alone in Eternal, looking forlorn and eating the cake that he stole. He also has animal ears for some reason.

Nozomi tries to kiss Coco again, in his fairy form, and he seems a bit reluctant. Syrup just looks annoyed in the background while Kurumi is really flipping out about this betrayal.

If you’re keeping track, that’s the third attempted kiss in this movie.

Nuts is seen dressed up in Dark Coco’s outfit, and he really does not seem to like it. Neither does Cocol. Komachi appears conflicted and Nozomi is living for it.

Urara is seen performing on a stage, while the crowd of people waves their miracle lights in unison.

The next slide is a reverse of this, showing all the main characters (Syrup, Komachi, Rin, Coco, Nozomi, Chocola, Nuts, Queen Dessert, Karen, and Kurumi) standing in front of the crowd watching Urara perform and waving their lights.

Next is a picture of Chocola fixing Nozomi’s animal ears, while Nuts looks sad, Karen and Komachi giggle at each other, and Kurumi has heart eyes for some reason.

Lastly is a picture of everyone, where all the girls are sitting in the front row and the boys and queen stand behind them. Chocola is hugging Nozomi and everyone is smiling for the camera. The real Chocola, holding the notebook, waves goodbye at the audience as the music comes to an end and the credits say “Owari” or “The End”.

Since the credits play over this during the movie, it can be hard to get a good view at the images in still form, but I took screenshots of each slide using the creditless version of the ending theme and uploaded them to the gallery for your enjoyment. 

The Analysis

The early years of Precure had a great run of films, and this is a proud continuation of that legacy. It’s outwardly kind of simple, thematically, but it pushes its message with such sincerity that you can’t help but be drawn in. It also has a really inspired alternate world, probably the best since Splash Star, and a fun original villain. For bonus points, there is 100% less gratuitous celebrity voice acting in this compared to the last two. The movie has a good setup, build up, payoff, and climax. It delivers memorable scenes, crafts loving character moments, and is a great story about family and friendship.

The friendship theme in this film plays out differently from prior movies..The FWPC era movies were about the two partners having a disagreement and later making up with each other, showing that the strength of their bond was their source of power. The first Precure 5 movie did the opposite, forcefully splitting up the girls and proving that their friendship was a source of strength even when they’re apart from each other. In this film, the girls are split up again, and there’s definitely an element of the strong-even-when-apart concept, but the message is more about how friends make everything more fun and enjoyable, and Nozomi gets the lion’s share of that. Yes, she’s the center of the team, and the main character of the series, but a whole bunch of Nozomi’s screentime involves her either spending time with her friends or espousing how much she wants to.

Like in the previous film, Dream is unique in that she doesn’t defeat her opponent by simply overpowering them physically and leaving them too weak to continue. Instead she is able to sympathize with them and resonate with their feelings. It’s not a perfect mirror to what she did with Dark Dream, since Coco is mind controlled and already an ally of hers, but the parallels are obvious, and that kindness and compassion is her greatest strength. Even Mushiban begins to admit this, in his final moments.

There’s also a secondary theme, as in the previous movie, about standing up against abuse and finding strength in different ways, which is visualized through Chocola’s relationships with Mushiban and Nozomi. Chocola goes through a great arc herself, starting out feeling helpless and desperate, and ultimately being willing to stand up to a powerful evil, thanks to the strength and courage that Nozomi inspired in her. 

That actually results in an interesting phenomenon. While Nozomi is the main character that the narrative follows, Chocola is more of the protagonist whose actions move the plot forward and who grows as a person. She’s the one who leads Bunbee to the Precures, and then takes them to the Land of Sweets. She brings everyone to the castle where they are then kidnapped by the villains. After Coco is possessed by Mushiban, she frees the other fairies and runs to Nozomi for help. She frees her mother from Mushiban’s control and enables Nozomi to become Shining Dream. Almost every major plot event is instigated by her, even if she’s doing Mushiban’s bidding, and Nozomi and co. are there to respond. Naturally, Nozomi still has an important role in the narrative as she confronts Dark Coco and comforts and inspires Chocola to take her steps against Mushiban in the first place and I’m not trying to downplay her accomplishments. Both of them are strong characters here and they complement each other well. Nozomi spends most of the movie just being really nice, wanting to get stuff to share with her friends. When the bad guys question this or say it’s useless, she shuts them down and emphasizes that people appreciate being thought about. It’s still friendship and love, as always, just a different angle on it and I think that’s a nice touch.

As far as antagonists go, Mushiban is the only one of note. Dry and Bitter just kind of exist to say and do bad things. They’re one-note as villains. They have no motivation of their own. They aren’t even named in the narrative, just the credits, and they only exist to save Mushiban’s reveal for the final act. Fortunately, Mushiban himself is more fleshed out. Even though he doesn’t appear on screen until the third act, he’s an active participant in the story from the beginning, since he’s controlling Queen Dessert, Dry, Bitter, and later Coco, and this allows the audience to get an impression of how powerful he is. His motivation is hilariously simple: he wants to finally actually experience the deliciousness that sweets can bring. The rub is that he’ll kill five girls in order to do it, which suddenly sounds a lot more dark. His absolute conviction to this goal (and the excellent voice acting) keeps him threatening. I enjoyed him because he had a powerful presence throughout the film, starting from the disheveled state of the throne room and the Queen who clearly wasn’t herself, up to the climax where he’s engaged in a furious sword fight with Shining Dream. He never lets up until the very end, where he finally begins to accept the error of his ways.

The other characters in the film are, unfortunately, not given much to work with. The other Precures just kind of feel like they’re along for the ride, as they don’t contribute to the narrative beyond occasional lines about enjoying spending time together. Kurumi is absolutely shit upon, given almost nothing to do other than tagging along with the other fairies. She completely transforms during the opening battle against Bunbee. Near the climax she gives Chocola a pep talk when the princess has already committed to defying Mushiban, and Milky Rose fights him to keep him busy while Chocola frees her mother, but she uses up her energy and doesn’t even get to participate in the big final battle. It makes sense within the established rules about her powers, but I think it is a big middle finger from a writing standpoint. She had a whole arc in the show not so long ago about how she wants to be a part of the team AND also be a caretaker for Coco and Nuts. I wish the movie writer was privy to that. It’s also possible the movie was written before the producers of the series decided to introduce Milky Rose, and so she was a late addition to the script, which could explain her limited role, but that’s only my speculation.

The action scenes, thankfully, are generally top notch (there’s definitely some moments of lackluster though). They’re fast-paced and creative. In the early scene at Natts House, there’s a part where Lemonade grabs the Hoshiina with Prism Chain and then she, along with Dream and Aqua, swings it around and hurls it towards Bunbee, which really stands out to me as something they wouldn’t be able to do on TV. The battles in the Sweets Kingdom where the girls are being turned into sweets are intense. They’re pierced and attacked by weapons in a way that they probably couldn’t get away with in the show. Bitter uses ice needles to attack Rouge and Aqua, which are seem to sink into their skin and turn them into ice pops. Similarly, Dry flings flat-edged cards that seem to cut the skin. Both of these actions slide under the radar because there’s no blood, but it’s powerful imagery. Meanwhile, Dream’s fight with Dark Coco is full of powerful blows given a lot of emphasis mixed in with some beam attacks. The two jump all over the place, and Dream pulls off an impressive series of back handsprings to evade. When Dark Coco reveals his identity and summons his Dark Fleuret, Dream switches only to evading his attacks, except at the apex of their battle. Mushiban, through Coco, tries to strike Nozomi directly on her head with the sword, and she just sits there and lets him, because she has started to get through to him and she believes that Coco can’t bring himself to hurt her. They do a quick fakeout to make it look like blood has been shed, when it’s just juice, and again it’s the type of shot that I think would be too much for Sunday morning.

The climax, where the cures face off against Mushiban together, is short lived. They try and fail to land hits on him, and he throws everyone either on the ground or into each other, and then puts them all out of commission with a dark energy attack. It’s good action but sometimes hard to make out what’s happening. This makes way for the true pinnacle moment of the film: Nozomi’s transformation into Shining Dream, and her one-on-one battle with Mushiban. This is where you get some of the best animation in the film, with Shining Dream flying around and clashing swords with Mushiban.There’s a particular moment where she rotates in midair, striking Mushiban twice. As soon as he’s defeated, the lighting turns to a somber twilight appearance, as a nice touch.

The scene where Dream kisses Coco to wake him up is a direct callback to the beginning of the movie, where he teases her about doing the same thing and compares her to Sleeping Beauty. The parallel is obvious, Coco is asleep under a spell and the kiss of his true love lifts that curse. There’s a point in their battle where a mind controlled Coco tries to kiss Dream as well but it’s done mockingly and she slips out of his grasp. It’s also the first onscreen kiss in the entire Precure series, and I believe the only kiss between a main Cure and another character. This makes it all the more special. It does cement their relationship in a way we seldom see in Precure romances, even though they never outright say they love each other or mention this moment later. Despite the sometimes ambiguous way the rest of the series handles it, and Nozomi’s rejection earlier in the film, she loves Coco and cares emphatically about him. The kiss is brought up one last time during the ending montage, when Nozomi attempts to kiss fairy form Coco and he seems nervous, but that’s treated as a gag. (Side note: I am aware that their relationship is controversial to some within the fandom. Whatever your feelings on it, please respect the message of the film.)

Obviously, Shining Dream is our requisite movie super form, but unlike the ones in every other movie, it’s exclusive to Cure Dream, and this will unfortunately become a trend for the next few fall movies. Regardless of the snubbing of the other main characters, let’s go over the design.

It’s a slightly embellished version of Cure Dream’s normal outfit in all white, with pink trim, and her hair is pinker than before. The skirt has an extra layer, as do her sleeves, the cuffs on her boots and gloves now have feather patterns, her back bow has longer trails, the chest butterfly is larger, and she has a pink rose in the center instead of a gem brooch. Also, her hair loops are tied with small wings instead of ribbons. And, obviously, she has angel wings that she retracts half the time. It’s a fantastic design and exactly what I want from a Precure powerup form. White is a good color, as it represents purity and the combination of all other colors of light. Any color can be upgraded to white safely, and it really works here. The pink highlights keep her grounded to her base theme, and the embellishments in the form of more curves and ruffles, and the extra rose on her chest, bring it all together. The angel wings are the icing on the cake. Compared to the Butterfly forms from the last movie, it’s undeniably better, and it even uproots the Phoenix power forms from the Max Heart film as the bext upgrade form so far in this franchise. (thoughts on Cure Angel, Mugen Silhouette, Crescendo Form, and others will come when I get to them).

Regarding the setting, this film continues the trend of the Precure movies taking place in an alternate world such as the Land of Clocks, the Garden of Clouds, or Paris. The Land of Sweets, or Dessert Kingdom, is one of the more creative movie worlds the movies have come up with so far. I think it might be one of my favorites, bumping up with the Land of Toys from the Fresh Precure movie (we’ll get there). It’s got a fun and creative atmosphere, similar to the tasting room scene from Willy Wonka. There’s so much you can do with a world made and also full of food, which they take advantage of. I’m especially fond of the montage that plays during the opening song where you see a bunch of examples of edible stuff.

I criticized the last movie for cramming in celebrity voices, and for a rushed finale. One of those two problems is nonexistent here, thankfully. The climax is still a little quick but it’s appropriately built up to and so there isn’t the same sensation that the writers ran out of time or had to cut some scenes to make it fit. My only complaint is, again, that Kurumi doesn’t get to do much despite supposedly being a main member of the team. I believe the next film, All Stars DX, gives her some more to work with, but it’s a shame she couldn’t shine in her own series’ movie.

Miscellaneous observations

Mushiban’s name is a play on the word 虫歯 (mushiba) meaning tooth decay, which is what happens when you eat too many sweets and don’t care for your teeth. Brush and floss regularly, kids!

Dry and Bitter are somewhat unusual. As I mentioned above, they’re not actually named in the dialog, and pretty much no information is given about them throughout the movie. They aren’t explicitly shown to be controlled by Mushiban, but they have gems on their chests for most of the movie that are gone when they reappear during the epilogue. Since nobody calls them out for their earlier actions, it can only be assumed they were also under Mushiban’s control like Coco and the Queen. Furthermore, they don’t have animal ears in their first appearance, but they do when they meet the girls. After kidnapping Rin, Urara, Komachi, and Karen, they reveal that they’re just headbands and throw them away. However, during their small appearance in the epilogue, they have animal ears once more. Are they fake? Are everyone’s animal ears fake? They had no problem conjuring up enough for all the main cast to wear during the credits montage. Also, Mushiban never has any. There’s a chance that the royal family are the only ones that actually have real animal ears and all the other residents are pretending. It opens up an unusual can of worms. There’s a chance it’s explained in some interview or series book I haven’t read, but maybe it’s truly a mystery.

The movie was released on November 8, Nozomi’s actual birthday.

Coco and Nuts transform into faux-precures in the prologue, calling themselves Cure Coconuts and wearing the outfits of Dream and Mint respectively. Everyone has a thick outline in this sequence for some reason. This is the first ever semi-canonical instance of male Precures. In 2023, the series would finally introduce a legitimate boy Precure in Cure Wing. And it all started here.

Also in the opening sequence, in the transition between the skit about Syrup being a monster, and the actual explanation of the miracle lights, a series of stagehands usher Syrup offstage. Their faces are not seen, but they’re clearly meant to be the five girls. It’s a detail that goes by quickly, to the point I missed it on my first several viewings of the film, so a great easter egg.

If you’re not familiar with Miracle Lights, here’s my writeup on those from the last movie explaining what they are and how they’re used.

Among other notable names, Yoshihiko Umakoshi was a key animator on this film, and in particular is believed to be responsible for animating the fight between Cure Lemonade and Mint and Bitter, as well as the climactic fight between Shining Dream and Mushiban. Umakoshi is a high profile animator and character designer, who is most famous in Precure for his work on the distinctive character designs and animation for Heartcatch Precure. Prior to Precure he spearheaded the Ojamajo Doremi series. He also worked on Casshern Sins and Saint Seiya Omega, and currently is the animation director for My Hero Academia.

Kurumi gets very annoyed and possessive when Chocola gets close to Coco, even though she’s markedly younger than him.

Bunbee’s presence in this film is the first time a TV antagonist has featured in a movie, since they normally feature original villains. Some will appear in future films, but it’s still rare.

During the fall down the purin mountains, Karen is blushing and holding her skirt down as if she’s afraid she’s going to flash someone. Although several of the others are wearing dresses, none of them seem bothered by the risk of exposure, and of course nothing ultimately happens because it’s not that kind of movie. It’s an odd detail to include at all, when everyone always has magic skirts.

Our original voice cast are:

Doi Mika as Queen Dessert. She’s known for playing Queen Serenity in Sailor Moon, Hayase Misa in Macross, and Takani Megumi in Rurouni Kenshin. She previously played Saki’s mother Hyuuga Saori in Splash Star.

Kawata Takeo as Princess Chocola.She played a one-off character named Nozomi in Max Heart, Princess Filia in Splash Star, and later plays Chypre in Heartcatch. She reprises the role of Chocola in DX3.

Otsuka Akio as Mushiban. He’s a veteran voice actor with a long career, famous for his deep voice. Popular roles include Kyoryaku Shunsui in Bleach, Batou in the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and All For One in My Hero Academia. He’s also the voice of Snake in the Metal Gear game series. Mushiban is the only character he has ever played in Precure, and he will reprise the role in All Stars DX3.

Ishida Akira as Dry. He’s known for playing Kaworu in Evangelion, Gaara in Naruto, and Kotaro in Gintama. He also played Cologne in Heartcatch.

Matsukaze Masaya as Bitter. Known for playing MegaBlue in Megaranger and Otori Kyoya in Ouran High School Host Club, he has no other Precure roles

Conclusion

This was another great Precure film. It has a few new ideas to try out, and it executes them well. It pushes the envelope somewhat in terms of what it’s willing to show the audience, and it caps off a great film about family and love. It stumbles in some spots, and a few supporting characters needed more to do, but it’s still a worthwhile experience and a great capstone to the pre-All Stars era.

Not a hot take or anything special, (more like a cold take) but I often feel weird recognizing certain characters whenever they're put into situations like Black Jack (Manga) or something darker. Seeing more childlike, comical, and usually purely innocent characters like Uran, Melmo, Sapphire, and Chocola appearing in more grim or adult oriented stories can be a little strange sometimes.

But then I remember that with Teuka's LARGE cast of characters and tendencies to rewrite his own stories and characters between demographics, you start to compare the Star System more closely with that of how comics and animations from superhero comic genres from groups like Marvel and DC handle their casts (for better or for worse). There are incredibly large ensembles of characters that can show up in either kid friendly genres or more adult themed graphics. Just look at all the different variants of Batman and Superman between the different comics, animated series, and movies they're in. The tone can be totally different.

However, there's still a lot of times that I often wonder where the line is drawn, especially since a lot of these casting choices were done by Tezuka himself for years.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Enjoy this 2/3 post of the ROs officials reaction to Valentine’s Day. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! ^^ (the last post will be delivered later tonight after I do the update and finish my classes)

Scenario; You/RO gift each other chocolates and spend the holiday together.

M they give you chocolate: Never in your life would you have ever imagined a person as large as M would be nervous giving you something. Especially with how small said gift was.

“This…yours. Take it.”

They hold it out to you as if they are a young little child handing a gift to their school crush. Smiling a bit, you take the gift. When you open the box, M anxiouslywatching you.

You see absolutely gorgeous chocolate shaped animals; they even looked hand carved! “Oh my gods, M this is amazing!” Showering them with complements and ignoring how flustered they get. You and M spend this holiday munching/making chocolates.

M you give them chocolate: Finding a chocolate they would like was quite difficult. When you tried to get information out of M about which chocolate they enjoyed, they just stared at you confused.

When you had asked Dawn, she just told you the chocolate she liked. Which was a not so subtle hint that you tactfully followed through with. You just decided to give them both the chocolate she liked.

“M, this is for you!”

“…” When you hand them the gift, a red box covered in small hearts. The chocolates within where a mix between dark chocolate and milk. M didn’t immediately open the box like their daughter with.

They stared at you with pure awe for a moment before looking down at the box. “Thank….you.” The entire day, M is by your side. You nearly catch them staring at you with a soft look in their eye…. But it could just be the lighting.

S they give you chocolate: You had nearly called the village guards when you found S breaking into your shop. Though you stopped yourself when you saw who it was and what they were holding. A box that looked as if it was falling apart was in their hands

“…S, what are you doing?”

“Oh, er-…Im making your day a whole lot better!!” They grin, quickly walking up to you and shoving the box into your chest. “Imagine, the greatest person in the village is here to take you as their valentines!” Tuning out their blabbering, you look down at the box and open it.

Surprisingly, beautiful rose shaped chocolates sat in said box. A deep flush was their color….and they tasted amazing. Well….. looks like your not spending this holiday alone, S is with you whether you like it or not.

S you give them chocolate: S was nearly attached to your hip the entire day. So, it was impossible to find time to secretly buy some chocolate and give it to them. You decided to just say ‘screw it’ and buy the chocolate in front of them.

“Aye, darlin. You buying something for someone else in front of me? I knew you had a lot of lovers but jeez-!”

“-here. There for you.” You hand them the small box with a smile. You give them a moment to process what you just said as they just stare it it. “I…thank-..thank you.” They said softly, carefully taking the box from you.

Holding it as if were a baby. Now, just to see that reaction again. You buy small treats and letters for them. Laughing every time they get flushed and stumble over themselves.

B they give you chocolate: You hadn’t expected anything when you smelt the sweet aroma from their bakery as this was to be expected in this time of year. What you didn’t expect was the large cluster of roses and chocolates left on your shop counter. With a letter signed from B.

In sloppy and rushed hand writing, it said the following. “The fact that you are sweeter than any candy I can make is a sin. Luckily, sins are the best for dark chocolates. I hope that when the day dies down, we can spend it together as each other’s valentines. -yours, B.”

Fighting back a smile by biting your lip, you slap the card against your hand a few times before setting it down and opening the chocolates while placing the flowers on the counter.

Just like in the note, delicious smelling dark chocolate sat in the box. Carefully painted with small hearts and ‘I love you’s. When the day finally settles, you nearly race to Bs shop.

B you give them chocolate: Finding chocolate from another bakery besides Bs was very… expensive. You had to go deep into the villages heart and try to ignore the side eyes the rich gave you. You tried to debate the prices with the seller while doing so was a bit difficult.

When you finally manage to buy a set of chocolates, they were exotic fruit filled chocolates. The pain in your coin was less important as you couldn’t wait to see their reaction.

B is waiting for you outside your shop with a few roses in hand when you arrive. “Hello, MC! What’ve you got there?”

“It’s for you!” You grin, pushing it into their hands. Taking the flowers from theirs.

“I-…oh my..for me?!” They squawk in surprise when they open the chocolates, their face slowly becoming the shade of the roses they gave you. The rest of the day, you and B are sharing the expensive chocolates. B scolding you for wasting money on them.

They make sure to teach you how to make chocolates…. For future purposes.

Webby and Lena don’t talk until three full days after the FOWL raid.

Oh, they talk, all right. Dewey never misses an opportunity to drag the kids together and gush about the adventure. While they had floated and filtered throughout the family on the long ride home, the ten kids had made an unspoken home base in the bottom corner of the plane, near the emergency hatch that Launchpad had accidentally opened. They chatted brightly, sharing jokes and trading jabs, high on the adrenaline of a long day and a treacherous fight won. But Webby and Lena never interacted directly in their conversations beyond pleasantries. 

They didn’t talk in the way that mattered.

After the comfortingly familiar sight of Duckburg had crested over the horizon and the plane had landed, Webby and Lena left each other without so much as a goodbye. Ty and Indy were hovering impatiently at the Sunchaser’s doors, flooding inside as soon as they possibly could and scooping Violet and Lena in their arms. Webby stood off to the side, her grandmother’s steady hands on her shoulders. She watches two doting fathers hold their daughters close and thinks about family. She thinks about her Granny, and Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Uncle Scrooge-Dad, and Uncle Donald and Aunt Della. She thinks about May and June, safe and happy with Uncle Donald and Aunt Daisy.

She thinks about June in her room and a flippantly cut string and Lena’s wrath. June watches Lena too, with Aunt Daisy’s hand on her head, and guilt flashes in her naive eyes. 

It’s almost the push she needs. Energy floods Webby’s tired body, and she tenses to surge forward and crash at Lena’s feet, blubbering with apologies and tears. 

Granny’s hand tightens on her shoulder, a silent warning.

Webby glances up. Granny’s eyes meet hers, as wise and clever as ever. She shakes her head, a tiny signal. As always, Granny can read Webby perfectly. Webby may not be able to read Granny so accurately, but this time the message is clear. Now is not the time.

Webby understands. With her family’s help, she’s getting better at social cues. This is the Sabrewing family’s moment, not hers.

Webby looks away.

After that, the next few days are both a flurry of activity and uncharacteristically empty for an adventuring family such as the McDucks. As per usual after an adventure, they trudge into the mansion, adrenaline sludging off in droves, and crash in bed for the next twelve hours. Webby wakes to the smell of blueberry pancakes, her favorite in childhood, and stumbles downstairs to where Granny is occupying the empty kitchen, a small, knowing smile on her face. She eats, watches the unfortunately missed Ottoman Empire series finale with her brothers (“I can’t believe we missed the series finale!” “We had to go rescue Webby and Huey, Louie.” “Yeah, but it’s the series finale! Now the show is over and there’ll be no more Ottoman Empire, ever!” “Eh, I’m sure they’ll reboot it in another thirty years.” “Yeah, but I’ll be old by then!”), eats less-than-healthy food that the adults let slide, and sleeps again.

On the second day, Webby and her brothers set up a room for May and June at the mansion while Aunt Della, Uncle Donald, and Aunt Daisy make last-minute arrangements to bring two extra kids on their vacation. May and June apologize, awkwardly and haltingly, at every possible occasion, and it’s all Webby and her brothers can do to lessen their guilt. But there’s one apology that sticks with Webby more than the rest.

June pulls her aside late into the afternoon, while Huey is teaching May the Junior Woodchuck certified method for hanging up curtains. 

“I’m sorry for cutting your string,” June says, nervously playing with her pigtails. “I know it’s really important to you.”

“It’s fine!” Webby’s voice is much brighter than she feels. The memory leaves an acidic sensation in her stomach and a bad taste in her mouth. Tears prick at her eyes at the secondhand sensation of Lena’s destructive fury and June’s panicked cries. But most of all, the helplessness and unsureness Webby felt in the moment. She had to watch her best friend tear into her adopted sister without a second thought, and part of it was justified but not all, and she didn’t know what to do. Her undying loyalty was shot in the face of uncertainty of who to pledge it to.

June frowns at her. She may be a FOWL clone, a test tube baby, barely a few months old, but she’s sharper than she looks. Louie’s lessons must be paying off. “It- it doesn’t have to be. I know I messed up. I messed up a lot.”

“You didn’t know what you were doing,” Webby says. The lie is heavy on her tongue, even if she means well.

June can’t meet her gaze. “Please, Apri- Webby.” Her sister’s head snaps up, her gaze shining and uncharacteristically serious. “Don’t make allowances. I want to earn your forgiveness.”

Webby blinks, stunned speechless, for a few moments. When she finds her voice, she clears her throat hesitantly. “Thanks. I… I appreciate that.”

June licks her lips nervously and nods her head, slow and careful. “Thank you for listening to me. It’s… new to me.”

Webby smiles awkwardly. “Of course, sis.”

As she had intended, June’s eyes light up at the term, and her vivacious smile is back in full smile. She squeals and squeezes Webby in a quick hug before returning to Dewey and Louie, the former who is trying to get the latter to do his laundry. Webby smiles fondly.

Webby knows most siblings don’t really call each other “bro” and “sis”. It’s a fixture of the media. Dewey explained it to her a week after Huey, Dewey, and Louie sat her down and told her in no uncertain terms they wanted her to be their sister. (She cried.) But with May and June, it feels right. They may not be normal siblings by both the media’s and society’s standards, but they’re sisters all the same.

The smile slips off Webby’s face as her thoughts spiral. June was right. The string issue is still bothering her, and she needs to address it.

Lena and Violet haven’t stopped by the mansion since the original failed FOWL raid. It’s not unusual for them to stop by later after an adventure, but usually they stay for the night after the trip.

They didn’t this time. Ty and Indy swept them away.

In bed, on the night of the second day, Webby lies awake long after lights-out. She stares at the ceiling, at the glow-in-the-dark stars she and Lena stuck up there two years ago, back when Lena was stuck as Magica’s lackey. The fear in her gut curdles into steady determination, and Webby Vanderquack makes a decision.

She picks up her phone, charging next to her, and texts Violet. Can I come over tomorrow?

Despite the late hour, Violet replies immediately. That would be agreeable.

No text bubble pops up to indicate Violet wants to say more, so Webby likes her message and sets her phone on the nightstand next to her. She lies her hands crossed on her belly and breathes deeply, wide awake. But a few minutes later, her phone buzzes again.

Is this purely a social call, or do you wish to speak to Lena?

Webby stares at the screen for a couple minutes, biting her lip. She knows Violet’s seen her read receipt, and usually that would spur Webby into action, but she can’t spew nonsensical responses right now. 

Finally, she settles on a simple Yes.

Violet’s reply is swift. Good.

This time, her typing bubble pops up almost immediately. Lena has been much more reticent since we departed Alexandria. My research has shown me that communication is the most effective path to healthy relationships.

Webby’s beak quirks up in a small, fond smile. Yeah. Me too.

I do not doubt that the pair of you will heal each other. Violet responds. Good night, Webbigail.

At precisely one-thirteen PM on the third day, Webby stands on the doorstep of the Sabrewing household, clutching a small purse and a bag of candy.

She rings the doorbell, and Ty greets her at the door. His face splits into a warm, fond smile at the sight of her, and it warms Webby’s heart. Ty and Indy are by no means the adults she’s closest to in her family, but from the moment Webby met them, they’ve never failed to make her feel welcome and safe and loved. 

“Come in, come in!” Ty gushes, guiding her into their familiar foyer, where Violet is peacefully reading a book. “Lena’s upstairs.”

“I’ll show her, father. Thank you.” Violet rises from her armchair, placing a bookmark in her book and carefully setting it down on the coffee table. She gracefully crosses the room and latches onto Webby’s arm.

“Okay. Have fun, you guys! I’ll make some snacks.” Ty gives Webby a quick hug and kisses Violet on the head, and then waves them away. Violet tugs Webby up the stairs and up to Lena and Violet’s shared room.

They pause outside the shut door. One of the Featherweights’ old albums floats through the walls. 

“This is where I leave you,” Violet intones. “Call me when you are finished.”

Webby smiles. “Thanks, Vi.”

Violet starts to step away, but pauses. “Webbigail?”

“Yes?”

Violet turns to fully face Webby, her expression deathly serious. “You are my best friend. But if you ever hurt Lena, I will hurt you. Tread carefully.”

Webby grins. “Thanks, Vi. Don’t worry.”

Violet sniffs, offended at the mere accusation. “I will not.” 

She leaves, and Webby turns to face the door. She spends a moment visually exploring every nook and cranny of the soft oak, and then takes a deep breath and knocks.

Lena opens the door, hair disheveled. “Dad, I don’t want chocola- Oh. Pink.”

Webby rocks nervously back and forth on her feet. “Hey, Lena.”

Lena blinks at her, her expression unreadable, before stepping aside and gesturing to the inside of the room. “Well, I guess you’d better come in.”

Webby smiles nervously and steps inside.

Lena and Violet’s room is messy and cluttered in a way nothing in the mansion is, because for all the Duck family’s characteristic untidiness, the mansion is simply too big and Granny is too competent of a housekeeper to let any clutter stay. Like Uncle Donald’s houseboat, Lena and Violet’s room, and the entire Sabrewing house, is cluttered because it’s lived in. It feels homey. It feels like family.

The room is filled to the brim with Violet’s various books - both hobbyist and scholarly, and Lena’s hair dye and vinyl albums. In the corner, Lena’s pet raven watches Webby carefully from its cage. They’re all in agreement that he’s not a normal raven, but his latent abnormalcy has yet to show itself.

“So.” Lena crosses the room to stand by her bed and her raven’s cage, shoving her hands deep in her pockets and rocking back on her heels. She won’t meet Webby’s eyes. “What’s up?”

Webby fidgets with the friendship bracelet on her wrist. The strings are frayed and soft from three years of constant wear and similar stimming. “I… I came to apologize.”

Lena’s hand strays to her bracelet as well. “Me too, Pink.”

“I shouldn’t have yelled at you for blowing up at June,” Webby says. “You told me not to forget you and, in your perspective, I basically did.”

“No, it’s my fault,” Lena sighs. “I let my temper get the better of me. I knew June was basically a little kid, and I still blew up at her. It was because of me that she got the opportunity to run off and steal the Sword of Swanstantine.”

Lena tugs at the hem of her sweater, scowling darkly. “I guess I just almost killed my family. Again. It’s fine; I’m used to it.”

The words are barely out of her mouth before Webby launches herself at Lena, barely able to contain herself. She wraps her arms around Lena and buries her head in the soft, worn cloth of Lena’s sweater. “You shouldn’t be! It wasn’t your fault before and it’s even less of your fault now. You’re part of this family.”

Lena’s arms rest lightly around Webby’s shoulders, and her chin touches the top of Webby’s head. “Yeah, I know that by now, Pink. I’ve come a long way, huh? But that doesn’t erase the fact that I messed up.”

“Well, so did I.” Webby replies stubbornly.

Abruptly, Lena pulls apart, her hands set steadily on Webby’s shoulders. She stares straight into Webby’s eyes. “Webby, I know the boys are your brothers, but for the first time in your life, you had a link to your biological family,” Lena states. “I don’t blame you for defending them, and you shouldn’t either!” For the first time, Lena drops her gaze, her beak curling in frustration. “I overreacted. Plain and simple.”

“But it came from a place of love,” Webby insists, her lower beak wobbling. “I- It means so much to me that our relationship means so much to you that June cutting our string set you off like that! Really!”

Lena smirks. “That’s sweet, Pink. It’s true. But I still shouldn’t have used my magic.”

“Maybe it was a little much,” Webby finally admits. Lena scoffs at that, but otherwise stays quiet. “But please don’t blame yourself. Bradford and Black Heron set May and June up to steal me and the Missing Mysteries. They would’ve found a way to cause an issue with or without you.”

Lena squeezes her shoulder. “There, you see? It’s Bradford and Black Heron’s fault, not yours.”

“But they were after me,” Webby insists. “And- and maybe if I’d been a little more forceful with Granny, maybe she would’ve told me about my real heritage.”

Lena snorts. “Please, Pink, Tea Time wasn’t the best spy in the biz for nothing. She didn’t spill her secrets until all other hope was lost and her literal worst nightmare had come true before her eyes.” Webby flinches at that, and Lena’s tone and grip softens. “Point being, it’s not your fault.”

“Well, it’s not yours either,” Webby insists.

“Maybe not,” Lena admits at last. “But I’m still going to apologize to June. Maybe I didn’t cause the Annual Duck-McDuck Family Crisis, but I still hurt June. That wasn’t okay.”

Webby smiles. “Thanks, Lena. I’m so happy you guys are trying to get along.”

Lena grins back. “Eh, we’ve got a lot in common. I’ll bring her and May over to my weekly ‘So your childhood guardian was a villain who used you to try and kill your new family’ hangouts I have with Boyd and they’ll be sold. Hopefully.”

The mental image of Lena, Boyd, May, and June hanging out at one of Lena’s favorite dives and discussing the perils of their childhoods over greasy burgers brings a smile to Webby’s face. “I’m sure they’ll love that. Eventually.”

“They’ll come around,” Lena says, but she doesn’t sound entirely sure.

“They will,” Webby affirms. “They’re… it’s not easy to adjust. Their entire lives were upended. But they’re trying.”

Lena smiles. “That’s all I ask for,” she says simply. “As long as I can help.”

“You will,” Webby promises. “Now, do you agree that you weren’t responsible for the incident?”

“Yeah,” Lena smiles wryly. “But neither were you.”

Webby clutches her elbow. “I still messed up, though. I could’ve handled it better. And I still hurt you.”

Now it’s Lena’s turn to rush forward and squeeze her in a hug. “Well, I guess we both did,” she murmurs, a little too flippantly. “Good thing we both came to apologize, yeah?”

“Mhm.” Webby nods into Lena’s chest. She’s so soft and warm and stable. “So, are we good?”

“Yeah, I think so,” Lena replies. “I need to apologize to June.”

They sit on Lena’s bed, and Webby leans into Lena’s side, toying with her friendship. “I missed you,” she murmurs, avoiding Lena’s eyes.

Lena chuckles, and while it’s in good faith, there’s not much amusement behind it. She ruffles Webby’s hair lightly. “I was only gone for a couple days, Pink.”

“Three,” Webby corrects absentmindedly. “This is the third day.”

Lena grins. “So you kept count, eh?” 

“Of course,” Webby responds matter-of-factly. “It was all I could think about.” She readjusts herself so she’s leaning against Lena more, and tilts her head back to see Lena’s face.

Lena is blinking, baffled, before her beak curves into a small, fond smile. “Huh. Me too.”

Webby’s smile grows and grows. Lena’s come a long, long way since Webby followed that fateful message in a bottle. She’s been much more comfortable with open affection for a long time now, but it still makes Webby’s heart sing.

“We should do something,” Lena hums. “Hang out, with no adventure or magical villain threatening our lives. We haven’t done that in a while.”

Webby laughs softly. “Yeah, it has been a while, hasn’t it? But you should know by now. There are no normal hangouts in this family.”

Lena chuckles, soft and fond. “Yeah, well. I’ll take whatever I can get as long as I can hang out with you.” She wraps her arm tighter around Webby, and snuggles closer. “I know what I signed up for when I joined this family.”

They sit together on Lena’s bed, facing away from each other, in the comfortable silence. 

“You know,” Webby breaks it after a few minutes. Her nervous fidgeting has returned. “You know, sometimes I wish it didn’t happen like this.”

Lena blinks. “Hm?”

“I-” Webby gestures animatedly, frustrated, days and months and years of pent-up emotion spilling out all at once. “I wish I didn’t have to find out about my family this way. I wish Granny could’ve just told me, without the FOWL capture and fights to the death and kidnapping all of our friends. I’m okay now, but… but it was really scary,” she finishes in a small voice, burying her head in her hands. “I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know if my family would be okay.”

“Oh, Pink.” Lena gathers Webby into her arms and pulls her onto her lap. “I know how you feel. It must’ve been really scary.”

“It was,” Webby murmurs. “It really was. But I love adventuring, and I already know what would happen if we stopped - heck, Uncle Donald already made that wish! And it didn’t turn out well! I shouldn’t feel this way, and I hate it.”

“You know, those two feelings aren’t mutually exclusive,” Lena says, raising her eyebrows. 

Webby twists in her embrace to meet her gaze. “Huh?”

Lena shrugs. “There isn’t much to it, honestly. Your daily, run-of-the-mill adventures aren’t the same as this scheme Bradford’s been cookin’ up for decades. They don’t usually involve life-changing revelations.”

“Yeah, but…” Webby sags in her embrace. “It’s still an adventure.”

“Honestly, it’s not healthy for you guys to keep having all your major events in life-or-death situations,” Lena snorts wryly. “But I guess that’s our family for you. Doesn’t mean it should stay that way, though.”

“Sometimes it’s out of our control,” Webby murmurs, a half-hearted protest for a battle she already knows she’s lost and didn’t even want to win in the first place. “Like when Lunaris chased Aunt Della down to Earth. She thought he was a friend. Or… or when Magica attacked us.”

“Yeah,” Lena mutters. “But your grandma still shouldn’t have lied to you.”

“She said she won’t anymore,” Webby says.

“And that’s great.” Lena squeezes her tighter. “That means it probably won’t happen again. The past is in the past, Pink. You can’t change it. Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of troubles with that fact.”

“You can’t control what other people do,” Lena continues. “Like with Lunaris and… and Magica. All you can control is yourself.”

“I’ll do my best to spill all my secrets before one of Dad’s mortal enemies has to threaten my life for it,” Webby snorts, half-sardonic and half-lighthearted.

Lena punches her gently. “I don’t think you’ll ever have a problem with that, Pink. You’re a pretty open book.”

Webby bites her lip. “That’s not a bad thing, is it? Bradford and my sisters were able to manipulate me pretty easily.”

Lena scoffs. “Yeah, and it ended so well for Bradford, didn’t it?” Webby keeps her gaze away from Lena’s face, and instead watches Lena’s hands clench and unclench into fists.

Lena sighs, taking a deep breath to reorient herself. “What I mean, Pink, is that it’s not a bad thing. Honestly, it’s one of your best qualities. I know I wouldn’t be here today if you weren’t so trusting and earnest.”

Webby smiles, but it’s forced. Evidently, she hasn’t picked up enough of Louie’s tricks yet, because Lena’s unwavering, deepening frown tells Webby she can see right through her.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t train,” Lena offers. “I don’t think you should become more distrusting and cynical, but maybe you can work to recognize when others are trying to manipulate you.”

Lena glances down at her hands, spinning a stray pencil (where did she get that?) around her fingers. “I could help you, if you’d like.”

Webby grins up at her, teary and emotional. “I’d like that.”

Lena drops the pencil and wraps her arms around Webby again. For the millionth time that day, Webby buries her head in the comforting familiarity of Lena’s soft sweater.

“I missed you,” Lena murmurs.

“Me too,” Webby replies. “So much.”

“So very much,” Lena echoes, and tugs Webby closer. 

For the first time in three days, the tension dragging Webby down loosens, and she is free. She is home.

i started writing this either the day of or the day after the finale, left it alone for two weeks, and wrote the second half today during a writing sprint (shoutout to silv’s server!). funny how these things work.

i have a lot of feelings on the finale, both good and bad, but i’m always going to be sad that lena and webby’s direct interaction in the entire series was a fight. they didn’t deserve that. 

i love dropping in little headcanons and doing little worldbuilding with places like lena and violet’s room. it sounds like a cozy place. there’s literally no way to prove this unless frank returns from his hiatus and answers an ask ig but if poe isn’t still out there and doesn’t end up drawn to lena i’ll eat my hat. let him be her weird familiar/uncle!! cmon disney!!

i love webby and lena. while i was writing this i was thinking about how in some of the recent amphibia episodes, one of the characters was hurt by another’s good intentions and wants to forgive them, but needs time. i thought about going that route but honestly? i think they just need to talk this one out. neither of them were really mad. the moment just caught up to them. they’re so close and in tune with each other.

Summary: Peter gets hit with a de-aging spell

Tony hates magic. Everyone knows that. He’s sure this is the reason why this evil witch decided to attack. On his birthday, of all days. He just wants to blast the woman to kingdom come, but he knows he can’t – honor and being better than the bad guy and all that blah blah blah Cap says. And the kicker of it is, he’s not supposed to be here. He’s supposed to be on vacation with his family, relaxing on a beach, but no, Steve had to take the Avengers to storm a HYDRA facility in Puerto Rico. Somehow, Capsicle gets the beach, and Tony is left fighting the witch on a stormy, windy day. It’s unfair.

 At least Tony has Rhodey and Peter to help him. Cackling, the witch fires a spell at Peter. It hits him and he falls to the ground. The witch looks surprised, which gives Rhodey the ability to stun her with sonic waves and place the anti-magic cuffs on her wrists. Tony flies down to Peter, but all he finds is his suit, no Peter to be found. What happened to him? Tony is panicking when he hears someone crying. Ten feet away is a toddler that was not there during the fight.

The child cries and rubs his eyes in a way that is eerily similar to… no, it can’t be! Is it? It is Peter – Tony would recognize those curls anywhere. Stumbling out of the suit, Tony walks over to the boy. “Hey buddy. Hey, you wanna go home?” He asks.

“Aun’ May says no talk to strangers,” Peter sobs. “Go ‘way.”

 “Do you want to call Aunt May?” Tony tries again. “Here, we can call her.” He hands Peter his phone. Tony figures the boy is 4 or 5 years old, but he isn’t surprised when he grabs Tony’s phone and dials in May’s number.  She answers within three rings.

 “Hi Tony, what’s going on?”

“Aun’ May?” Peter asks. “Dere’s a guy here who wantsa take me home. You said no strangers.”

“Peter?” She asks, voice getting higher with panic. “Peter, honey, the guy is Mr. Tony. He’s a friend of mine. Can I talk to him, please?”

Peter hands Tony the phone. “May.”

“Tony, what the hell is going on?” She interrupts him. “Why does he sound like he did when he was five?”

“He was hit with a de-aging spell. Can – do you want me to take him to your apartment?”

“I’m on a work shift. Take him to the Tower, but I’m going to ask my boss if he can let me leave now. Put Peter back on the phone and switch me to video call.” Tony complies. “Peter, honey, I want you to go to Mr. Tony’s, ok? I’m at work, but I’m going to leave as soon as I can to pick you up.” Peter’s lip starts to quiver. “Hey, Pete, Mr. Tony has some robots. Ask him if you can see them.”

The robots seem to distract Peter. He looks up at Tony. “Aun’ May says you has robots?” He asks excitedly.

“Yup. How about I take you home in my robot suit?” He nods to the armor behind him.

Tony can see the stars in Peter’s eyes. “Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank you, Mr. Tony!”

Quickly updating Rhodey, Tony picks up Peter, telling him, “You have to stay still,” and flies back to the tower.  Peter looks in awe when he walks inside and sees the Roombas.

“Mr. Tony, this is so neat! Can I see your robots now?” He jumps up and down excitedly.

Tony grins. His bots will be so excited. “Sure, let’s go.” He gets out of the suit and tells FRIDAY to take care of it. Taking Peter’s hand, he leads him to the elevator. “I have three robots – their names are DUME, U, and BUTTERFINGERS. They’ll be so excited to see you.”

“Why did you name your robot dummy, Mr. Tony?” Peter’s childish giggle echoes in the elevator. “That’s silly.”

Tony leans close, as if to tell Peter a secret. “When I made him, all he wanted to do was run into the wall. After he did it ten times, I said, ‘get back here, you dummy,’ and he stopped and turned around. Now, he thinks his name is DUME so that’s what I call him.” It does his old heart good to see the pure joy on baby!Peter’s face.

When the elevator opens to his lab, Tony is surprised to see Bruce Banner working on a project. Bruce is apparently surprised to see him as well. “Tony! Hi!” He stops short, seeing Peter. “When did you have a kid?”

“Not mine. Hold on a sec,” He tells Bruce. “Pete, look, this is DUME. DUME, shake hands.” The bot enthusiastically reaches down to grab Peter’s hand. Peter takes the claw and shakes it, laughing happily.

“Hello, Mr. DUME!” He says brightly, and DUME had the nerve to look straight at Tony with a smug look on his claw. Tony scoffs at him and shakes his head.

BUTTERFINGERS and U fly over, hearing that DUME made a new friend. They quickly reach down to shake hands as well. “This one is BUTTERFINGERS. She tries to make me smoothies, but sometimes she puts in motor oil. And this one is U. She likes my video camera. She thinks she’s a movie director or something.”

“Nice to meet you, Miss BUTTERFINGERS and Miss U,” Peter shakes their claws, respectively.

Tony hands Peter a rubber ball. “They like to play fetch if you want to throw this. Just throw it that way.” He points to the end of the room. “Nothing over there can get hurt by the rowdy bots.”

After Peter starts to play with the bots, Tony turns back to Bruce, who gives him a worried look. “Tony, what is going on?”

“De-aging spell. I don’t suppose you would know when Thor is coming back, would you?” Tony asks. He knows Bruce has a crush on Thor, and vice versus, but he doesn’t think they’ve done anything about it yet.

Bruce blushes. “Actually, he’s coming back tomorrow.”

“Great. Maybe he can give some insight to this spell.” Tony sighs. “May should be here shortly. I don’t know what’s going to happen. He is adorable, though, isn’t he?”

“He’s an actual ray of sunshine. Ah, to be that young and not have a care in the world.” Bruce smiles wistfully.

The elevator doors open, and Rhodey walks in. “Hey,” he says and pecks Tony on the lips, “FRI said to come down here? What happened? Is Peter ok?”

“He’s ok, but he’s younger…” Tony gestures to the small boy playing with the bots. “Evil witch-bitch hit him with a de-aging spell. Thor’s going to be here tomorrow. I figured he might know. If not, I’ll have to go beg Strange.”

“Oh no, the world would actually end,” Rhodey deadpans, and sometimes Tony just doesn’t appreciate his husband’s sass. Actually, that’s a lie. He loves Rhodey’s sass.

He bumps Rhodey’s hip with him, giving him an affectionate look. He is about to reply when Peter runs back over. “Mr. Tony, can I have some water? I’m thirsty.” He stops when he sees two men he doesn’t know.

“Sure! Rhodey, can you grab a water bottle from my minifridge? Peter, this is Dr. Bruce, my friend and that’s my husband Rhodey. Guys, this is Peter Parker.”

Rhodey hands Peter a water bottle and holds out his fist for a fist bump. “Hi buddy. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too, Mr. Rhodey and Dr. Bruce.” Peter bumps Rhodey’s fist and takes a long drink.

Boss, May Parker has arrived. FRIDAY says.

Peter jumps up. “You have a voice in the ceiling! Mr. Tony, you are so cool! Can we go see Aun’ May now?”

Tony takes Peter and Rhodey’s hands, and they walk to the elevator together, Peter babbling excitedly about all he did today. When they get to the living room, the boy runs over to May and gives her a tight hug. “Mr. Tony is so awesome! He has robots and-and-and a ceiling voice!”

Thank you. May mouths overtop Peter’s head. “That’s great Peter! I’m glad you made some new friends. What next? Are you hungry?”

As if on cue, Peter’s stomach growls. “I guess a little bit.”

“Do you like mac n cheese?” Rhodey asks. When Peter nods, he says, “I made my momma’s recipe for dinner last night. Do you want me to heat some up for you?” Peter enthusiastically assents and follows Rhodey to the kitchen.

“So, what happened?” May asks once Peter is out of earshot.

Sticking his hands in his pockets, Tony rocks back on his heels. “We were fighting a witch, and she hit him with a ‘magic’ beam. It immediately made him a toddler. That’s all I know about it. Bruce said Thor’s coming home tomorrow. I think he’ll be able to shed a little light on it.”

“What am I supposed to do? They’ll kill me if I ask off because right now is our busiest season, but I never left him alone back then. He was too young.”

“If you want, I can ask him to have a sleepover. I can ask Harley to come and spend time with him. And you can just come for dinner or whatever.” Tony suggests.

 Visibly relaxing, May says, “If he will, I would be all for that. Let’s ask him.”

The two of them walk into the kitchen and melt at the sight in front of him. Peter is sitting next to Rhodey eating mac and cheese, getting it everywhere, even in his hair! Every two bites, he would offer one to Rhodey, asking, “Share?”

“Oh, my goodness! Those curls! I forgot how curly his hair was at this age!” May coos, which causes Peter to look up and wave, accidentally throwing pasta across the table.

May takes the seat on the other side of Peter and asks, “Hey Pete, how do you feel about a sleepover?”

“A sleepover?” Peter lights up, then questions. “Will you be there?”

“Well, do you want me to be there?”

“Yes.”

May wilts. “I can be there at night, but I have to go to work in the morning, ok? Mr. Tony asked if we wanted to sleep over, and then, when I go to work, he’s going to bring a friend over. His name is Harley.”

Peter quickly agrees, and Tony texts Harley to come the next day. He also sends a private message to Steve, explaining what happened and asking him to inform the others. Tony then tells Pepper he’s taking the day off to partake in “Irondad” activities, as Clint had dubbed it. Finally, he and the other sit down and watch Finding Nemo before going to bed.

FRIDAY wakes Tony up when May is ready to leave for work. Getting a cup of coffee, he sits on the couch outside Peter’s room. He works on specs on his Starkpad until the boy wakes up and comes out of his room. “Good morning Peter, you hungry?”

“Yea…” Peter yawns. “Do you have pancakes?”

“I can make them – do you want chocolate chip?” Tony smiles at how quickly Peter wakes up.

They are eating breakfast when Harley walks in. “Hey Mechanic. Is this Peter?” He asks.

“Yes. Peter, this is Harley. Harley, Peter.”

Peter smiles at Harley with a mouth full of chocolate chip pancake. “Hi Harley! Want some breakfast?”

“Sure.” Harley pulls out his phone and takes a picture of Peter eating his pancakes, chocolate chip stains on his face. Peter is going to kill him when he gets older.

Tony spends the day playing games with the boys. Peter attaches himself to Harley very quickly, and even though Harley acts a little prickly about it, Tony can tell he’s loves it.

The other Avengers get home and introduce themselves. Everyone sits down to dinner when a loud sound tells them that Thor has arrived from Asgard. He walks in five minutes later, announces himself, and gives Bruce a big smooch. So, they did do something about their crushes. Tony surmises.

Thor takes one look around the room and latches onto Peter. “Hello, and who is this young man?” He asks.

“This is Peter. Peter, meet Thor.” Tony says, sending a message to Thor with his eyes.

Tony’s not sure if Thor got his message, but Thor simply says, “I see. It is a pleasure to meet you, young Peter. Is there food enough for me?” When Tony nods, he takes a seat between Tony and Bruce.

Clint grabs Peter’s attention by doing some kind of childish stunt, and Thor asks Tony quietly, “Is this Peter Parker?”

“Yes, he was hit with a de-aging spell. Was wondering if you know anything.”

“It looks like simple spell-work of an inexperienced magic user. These spells last three days, at the most. With his quick healing, he should be back to normal sooner than later.”

Once dinner is over and everything is cleaned up, everyone settles down to watch a movie. Peter chooses Hercules. By the time the movie is over, he is sleeping on top of Harley, cuddling him. Harley is sleeping as well. Tony throws a blanket over them, and everyone filters out of the room.

He can’t stop laughing when he is woken up in the middle of the night when Peter and Harley wake up screaming because Peter reverted back to his normal age. Maybe they’ll get their heads out of their asses and go out on a date or something.
