28/?? Childhood TV Shows You Should Watch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: Punkin'Puss & Mushmouse
Episodes: 23
Original Air Date: 1964 - 1966
Synopsis:
The show features a hillbilly cat called Punkin' Puss who lives in a house in the woods of the southern US. Punkin' is preoccupied with a hillbilly mouse called Mushmouse who lives there too, and Punkin' frequently tries to shoot him with his rifle. In many cartoons, one of Mushmouse's cousins visits and gives Punkin' Puss a hard time.
My Rating: 6/10
My Reasoning:
This is very much Tom and Jerry if they were dumbed down and sent to live in the country as hillbillies. Do I find it entertaining? Yes. Do I like it better than the actual Tom and Jerry? No.
Don't get me wrong, it's still worth watching, and I think you should check it out. However, it's not the best show ever lol.

These are some unique twists to such a classic painting.
I don't play poker. But if I had the chance, I'd hang around with the cats since they're all the coolest and I could probably learn more about the game from Top Cat since he's shown to be a pro at it. (And definitely NOT because I have a crush on most of the people in this room.)

The next time someone say's "When did kid's cartoons get so woke and political?", I might suggest that you might point them in the direction of, of all things, "Yogi's Gang".
Yogi's Gang was a series from 1973 which was one of Hanna Barbera's "All Stars" series where ALL their major talking animal characters were part of an ensemble team. (There are others, "Yogi's Treasure Hunt", "Yogi's Laff-a-Lympics" etc etc).
So we had@
Atom Ant
Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy
The Hillbilly Bears
Hokey Wolf and Ding-A-Ling Wolf
Huckleberry Hound
Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har
Magilla Gorilla
Peter Potamus and So-So
Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks
Punkin' Puss & Mushmouse
Quick Draw McGraw & Baba Looey
Ricochet Rabbit & Droop-a-Long
Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole
Snagglepuss
Snooper and Blabber
Squiddly Diddly
Touché Turtle and Dum Dum
Wally Gator
Yakky Doodle
Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo Bear
All on a quest to help the world from their flying ark (I have no idea why).
Their villains are embodiments of various flaws and vices, at a level which Captain Planet would have found a bit... on the nose
Their first one is perhaps the most "slapped with a wet fish across the face" level of subtlety, but you have to admire the studio for gifting the world:
Doctor Bigot
youtube
As you see, he lives up to his name (along with the minions Professors' Haggling and Bickering), and he plans to sow strife by making everyone more aware, and resentful, of differences... pretty much because he's an absolute asshole.
Other villains include: The Greedy Genie, the Envy Brothers, Lotta Litter and "Smokestack" Smog.... like I said, low key it ain't.
But given that it's now a half century old, it's nice to be able to point to something and just say to those who ask the question posed at the top of the post: "Well, there are probably earlier examples, but this is one of the first and most blatant, don't you think?" :)

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- Punkin Puss and Mushmouse- “Courtin’ Disaster”
Tumblr media
Does anybody remember these cartoons? These were a part of The Magilla Gorilla Show, and asked the question “what if Tom and Jerry were a pair of hillbillies, and weren’t funny?”
Now I do have a soft spot for Hanna-Barbera’s work, and do genuinely think that their earliest series are of quality, but not so much at this point. A lot of their best jokes and ideas had been used at this point.
But I do like going back to the silly animal cartoons every now and then, usually the good ones like Yogi Bear and Quick Draw. But this time, I added some of the lesser characters, like Hokey Wolf and these guys. So let’s see what’s going on here.
In this one, Punkin Puss wants to feud with his buddy Mushmouse, as they usually do, but Mushmouse has other plans. He’s going out to see the lady he’s courtin’, Honeybun. Unfortunately, Honeybun has no patience for a meek little mouse and wants him to stand up to Punkin Puss. That doesn’t go well until she gives Mushmouse some, ahem, incentive to prove his worth.
And that’s fine, a cute joke is added here and there. But it really loses me in the end, when Honeybun is so pleased with Mushmouse’s performance that she talks about wedding plans, and their future afterwards. That prospect freaks out Mushmouse so much that he runs away and goes back to feuding with Punkin Puss like they’re back to normal.
Now if this was showing Mushmouse thinking that he and Honeybun haven’t been together for long enough to get hitched, that’d be one thing. But no, the impression that I get it “haha marriage is scary and women are icky, so let’s go back to our mancaves” and mehhhh. And I don’t even want to get into Appalachian stereotypes.
Whatever, look at these vintage toys of the two.

MUSHMOUSE, just taking things all the easier inasmuch as his nemesis, Punkin Puss, is distracted romantically: If you ask me, folks, the way Punkin Puss is being distracted by all those female cats for a day out at the springs, it looks as if this little ol' mouse is gonna be having it easy for awhile!

It's Time to Duel
Tumblr media
No, I'm not apologizing for this pun, LOL XD
After I doodled Dixie, I knew I had to draw Don. Their story is probably one of my favorite OC pairs that I've written, and to be honest, I'm so glad that I changed my mind about killing him off. We wouldn't get the romance--or Punkin's chance at having a happy ending, either. ^^ (And by that I mean Don helping him escape his abusive family).
My favorite part has to be his expression. I LOVE how he looks here. Can't you picture him saying the "Fear me, if you dare!" line? :D
The major problem I had was with his hat. I really struggled with this one since I was thinking of doing either black or grey. I ended up going with brown, which doesn't look bad, but I think I'll go with grey in a future drawing. I'm definitely keeping the blue plume, though. Originally, I was going to give him a sea green one like Cat, but that changed since I figured it would clash with his color scheme, which already has brown and red.
The next two characters on my WIP list are definitely Dixie and Darrell!
Enjoy!

{{The original Punkin’ Puss & Mushmouse cartoons always varied in quality, but this episode, “Seein’ Is Believin’“ had some of the best background shots in the cartoon. There are other nice background shots in other episodes, but these happen to be my favorite, so much that I took them as an art reference :)
Oh, and yeah, I had to get a good shot of my favorite hillbilly cat ^^}}
