I love this flavour of 90s furry art that can never be duplicated ever again. Like you CAN make art with Lion King characters in action blockbusters but it simply WON'T be the same.

My brain ended up wandering into me thinking about The Lion King and I specifically started thinking about Lion King 1/12.

I love that film, it’s so fucking funny, it’s also clear it’s not meant to be canon to the first film. I mean come on, do you really think Timon and Pumbaa just happened to pass through Simba’s presentation and were unintentionally the reason the animals started bowing? Or that they just happened to be napping where “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” was being sung and Timon was the reason the animals fell? Of course not, it’s just meant to be a funny parody/what-if sort of thing.

BUT. Timon’s backstory about being an outcast and deciding to leave his colony to search for his own home, meeting Pumbaa along the way, and the two deciding to look for a new home together? Timon’s mom and uncle? That part I can definitely see being canon, especially since we already knew from the first film that the two were outlasted loners so why wouldn’t that be part of their backstory?

Then I thought of a headcanon: imagine Timon and Pumbaa telling a really young Kiara their story but they (well tbh I can see just Timon doing this part lol) fabricate parts of it to make it sound like they were in the background of Simba’s story from his birth? Maybe she even believes it when she’s really young and Simba decides to humor his friends by playing along but when she gets older (probably the age she is as a cub in Simba’s Pride) she starts questioning if it was really possible that her uncles were there the whole time so she confronts Timon and he reluctantly fesses up.

I just thought that was a really cute idea. But don’t get me wrong, I love the framing device in the movie of Timon and Pumbaa watching it in a theater. So much of the film’s humor comes from those scenes (the singalong scene with the ladybug that Pumbaa tries eating at one point? The ending where other Disney characters come in the theater to start the movie over? This film is comedy gold).

Tried my hand at another Lion King 1 1/2 screencap redraw. Tried to make Timon more closely resemble his TLK 1994 model. The colors were fun to figure out, because there isn’t actually any examples of Timon in the Pridelands at the ass-crack of dawn in the original TLK. 😂

I’ve been studying that original Lion King style really hard, so I hope that comes out here. 😬 The expression was interesting to tackle because Timon’s eyes don’t really do those micro-expressions in the first movie.

I got this cute idea in my head where Timon's mom realizes that since Timon and Pumbaa raised Simba after Mufasa's death then that means Simba's technically her grandson and she's his grandma. Timon's embarrassed but Simba thinks it's sweet lol.
