First comment: I was watching a TikTok where a flat-nose dog was intubated during surgery and was waking up and recovering from anesthesia. The dog was awake and still had the tube going down its throat. The vet explained that flat-nose dogs will tolerate a tube down their throat way longer than my other dogs because they can actually breathe well. That one was awake with it for an hour before they took the tube out. Imagine that from the moment you are born, breathing is hard and one day, you have surgery, they put a plastic tube down your throat, and it is the first time you have ever been able to breathe normally. Very sad.
Second comment: I'm a vet tech and it's 100% true. So many of the brachycephalic patients were joyful in ways not seen without the endotracheal tube in. We always try to keep them in as long as safely possible for those patients, because they sadly seem to prefer it.
This is so heartbreaking jfc. People have gotta stop supporting breeders who create these brachycephalic dogs (and stop breeding them in the first place, ofc). 😢
I mean look at this mess! First pic is a standard dog, second pic is a brachycephalic dog:
Tumblr media
At least it looks like Netherlands is banning them, along with cats with folded ears (like Scottish Folds), which have equally horrible outcomes like osteochondrodysplasia.
Hopefully persians and other flat-nose cats follow.

Day 22: Animal shelter
“How about this one?” Minka pointed at the cute little pug sitting in its compartment, chewing on a squeaky bone toy.
“Hmm.” Penny walked up and checked the name. “Puddles, huh? Aww, that’s quite adorable.” She smiled softly, but still, she was not convinced. “But I don’t know…”
“Then how about this one?” Zoe called her over to where she was eyeing another dog. “I think she’s magnificent.”
Penny couldn’t help the wide smile when she saw a cavalier king charles spaniel reacting to her by barking and wagging her tail. “She does look great, but I just don’t know.”
“Penny, honey, I hate to be impatient, but…” Minka who bounced over to them exchanged glances with Zoe who hesitated, “we have been in here for a while and so far you’re unsure about each dog.”
“I know,” Penny sighed and continued strolling slowly, the small compartments lining the walls on her both sides, the dogs reacting to her with so much energy not even Minka could compare. “I think they’re all great, but at the same time I can only take one, so I want it to… click, I guess. Something just needs to tell me that it’s the right dog for me, but I don’t want to limit myself either.”
“Maybe you should get a cat instead then? Maybe they’ll be easier to-,” Minka paused her chatter once Penny stopped abruptly in front of one of the bigger compartments. “Hm?” She and Zoe both moved to see what kind of dog their friend was inspecting.
As soon as Zoe did though, “...I don’t know about this one, Penny.”
“I want her.”
“She…” Zoe checked the name. “Lady, yes, she looks quite frazzled.” The three girls stared at the older dalmatian. Lady wasn’t asleep, but contrary to most dogs she didn’t react to the arrival of a new potential adopter.
“That’s exactly why I want her.” Penny stopped fixing her eyes on the dog instead giving Zoe a look, making her flinch a little. “Look, she clearly doesn’t think she has a chance, poor thing. Most people want small, cute, young dogs, and I understand that, but if everyone only thinks of owning those, who will help dogs like Lady? She deserves to live however long she has in the best environment possible, not in some cage-like area,” Penny finished but now she was the one to flinch upon noticing the tears in the corners of Zoe’s eyes. “Oh, Zoe, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you, I just… uh…”
“No, it’s alright, I understand what you’re saying.” Zoe wiped the few tears away and smiled. “I'm not upset that you corrected me, I was just moved by your words.”
“Tell me that.” Penny turned to Minka - she was not crying at all, but her gaze was fondly placed on Lady. “Well then, get her!”
“Right! Give me a moment.” Penny turned on her heel to look for a worker.
While she was gone, Zoe and Minka lingered close to Lady’s space, though Minka couldn’t stop herself from greeting all the remaining dogs, their barks now lessened but still filling the air. While the dalmatian still didn’t move from her spot, they both could have sworn they saw her looking at them more often, barely glancing, but definitely paying attention to them especially when Minka started cheering her on.
“Don’t worry, Lady! You’re gonna get adopted, I promise.” A wag, a second one, a third one…
Those wags might have been hesitant in nature, but the immediate speed up when Penny returned with a worker who opened the compartment was undeniable. Once they all exited the shelter, with Penny barely being able to hold Lady in place even on the leash, they all knew the choice made was the right one.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feels weird saying that knowing that my dog was not from one, but I was also like 10 at that time, anyway, if you want a dog, adopt it from a shelter, k? And don't forget about older and/or bigger dogs, they're less "popular" but still need a home.

Welcome to the first ever Succession Dog Show
Contestants have been split into seven groups for the first of three rounds. The second round will have the same groups, with just the top three from the first round. Then the winner of each group will move on to the final round‚ which will also include special guest Mondale Roy. Also, Marcia is the judge because <3 and I say so.
In each group there are five succession characters plus three more normal dogs because I didn’t think five was enough and also I think it’s funny that it’s a possibility that none of the characters make it to the final round.
These polls all will last 1 week‚ closing and opening on Sundays.
Here are the Round 1 polls:
Herding Group
Hound Group
Non-Sporting Group
Sporting Group
Terrier Group
Toy Group
Working Group
+ tag to just scroll through them

A jug dog breed is a pug and a Jack Russel terrier, it's one of the main candidates for trying to elongate the pug's snout again so you see them called retro pugs as well sometimes
It's a noble and admirable goal but idk about that temperament combo
Yeah if I was gradually breeding the pug's snout back into existence, like if I'd run the pugs through King Charles Spaniels first (pugaliers...)--- Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are cuddle bugs and the chillest small dogs I can think of--but then the coat texture would probably put them another degree removed from traditional pug looks. So if you had a pug/cavalier king charles/jack russell combo you'd have... the Jugalier...

In my last poll, I asked what kind of pet Sebastian might keep, and a dog was the clear winner! Because I LOVE dogs, I just can’t resist narrowing it down further. Let’s get to the bottom of this! 🐶

5 Toy Breeds That Worry Vets the Most
Tumblr media
Guest Post by Dr. Marty Becker
Let me say this up front: I love all dogs. Every single one I see in my practice brings a smile of joy to my face. But I often have concerns about certain small dog breeds, either because they may be prone to specific health problems or because they have reached such heights of popularity that mass production by puppy mills or careless breeders has put them at risk of overpopulating shelters instead of homes.
Because of this, there are some dogs I would like to see less of in my practice. Not because I think they’re bad — there’s no such thing as a “bad” dog in my book. Instead, I would like to see fewer of these types of dogs, and I would like them all to have better health and ample opportunities for loving, lifelong homes.
Tumblr media
Lovable but Trouble
Teacup Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: You might be surprised to hear me say this — Cavaliers are wonderful little dogs with sweet temperaments. They easily capture the hearts of their owners, but it’s their own hearts that I worry about. Because of their limited gene pool, Cavaliers are prone to early onset of a common heart problem in dogs: mitral valve disease. Because of this, their life spans can be as short as six to 10 years. These dogs should live up to 14 years or more. Some of them do, but not enough. Veterinary researchers and breeders are seeking an answer to this health concern, but until they find one, I’d like to see this breed’s skyrocketing popularity come back down to Earth.
Tumblr media
Teacup Chihuahua: The great thing about Chihuahuas is their long life spans. It’s not unusual for these tiny dogs with the ginormous personalities to live 15-plus years with regular wellness care. Some of them even live into their 20s. For a dedicated owner, that’s a huge bonus. But it worries me that so many of these entertaining but bossy little dogs end up in shelters. There are so many in states such as California and Arizona that they are often airlifted or trucked to other states, where they are less common and in higher demand. Until that problem is solved, I’d like to see fewer of them walk through the doors of my practice.
Tumblr media
Teacup Yorkshire Terrier: The terrors, er, Terriers of the Toy Group, Yorkies are mischief makers who are full of themselves — and that’s saying a lot, given their minuscule size. I love their independent nature and their sense that they are as big as Great Danes, but they can have health and behavioral problems that get them into trouble. Among their health concerns are portosystemic shunts, luxating patellas and collapsing tracheae. They’re also easily injured because of their tiny size. Behavior wise, it’s all too easy to ignore house-training or training in general. That can turn what should be a smart, highly trainable, well-behaved dog into a little tyrant. These are all among the reasons that it’s not unusual to find Yorkies and Yorkie mixes available in shelters or through rescue groups. As a veterinarian and dog lover, I’d love to see fewer Yorkies, all with better health and good homes with people who will give them the combination of love and training they need to thrive.
Tumblr media
Teacup Puggle: This popular hybrid, or designer, dog (a combination of a Pug and Beagle) has a lot going for him. For starters, he’s cute and sweet. But as a blend of two very different breeds, he can have some issues that may become prominent and problematic after the cute factor wears off. Take his shedding — please! Both Pugs and Beagles shed heavily. When you combine the two breeds into a single dog, you’re going to wind up with a shedder — and often, people don’t realize this before they get one. Another factor is size. It’s not unusual for Puggles to grow bigger than buyers expect. And they can have the breathing problems associated with Pugs, as well as the high energy level associated with Beagles. Those are all problems that can land them in shelters or with rescue groups, seeking a family who recognizes and understands their quirks.
Tumblr media
Teacup anything: It’s easy to understand the appeal of teeny-tiny dogs. We humans are attracted to extremes, and the idea of a dog who fits into the palm of a hand is almost irresistible. But it must be resisted. Micro dogs weighing three pounds or less at adulthood are more prone to serious health problems and generally live shorter lives. It’s hard on them, and it’s hard on their families to lose them at an early age. There are plenty of small dogs who are healthy; let’s not encourage the breeding of tiny, unhealthy dogs simply so we can have bragging rights about whose dog is the smallest.
