💜 wilmon;
"This must be a mistake, I've always had this room to myself."
"This must be a mistake, I've always had this room to myself."
Wille knows it's the wrong thing to say as soon as it's out of his mouth, though to be fair, it's entirely truthful - for ten years he's flown into Toronto after spending Christmas with his family in Sweden, opting to take the long, luxurious train ride westward across Canada and back to what he considers his real life in Vancouver. He needs the time to shake off the holidays, and his parents, and the version of himself he becomes with them.
So he spends a ridiculous amount of money for a cozy cabin in Prestige Class, and he arrives early so that he can unpack all of his toiletries in his private washroom, and then he takes a coffee in the Panorama car for the first hour of the ride before he retires to his room to read. Which he'd been coming back to do now, except there's a man in his room. And this man has put his toiletries next to all of Wille's toiletries, and his shirts are hanging in the closet next to Wille's suit jackets, and he's sitting on the clean sheets of the bed, which - does that mean Wille is expected to sleep on the couch?
The stranger shrugs, his shoulders clad in a cozy green sweater rising almost to the lowest swoops of his curls. "Maybe they ran out of room this year."
Maybe they offered you a bargain rate, to cram one more person in, Wille thinks, because nothing about this man's scuffed shoes or worn suitcase suggests he could afford Prestige Class. This thought, thankfully, he has the foresight to keep to himself.
"If you're thinking about asking the conductor, don't bother," the man goes on. "I already did."
"I wasn't," Wille lies. "I'm Wilhelm, by the way. Wille." It's a peace offering, to mollify the man until he can find a conductor. Surely ten years of patronage should earn him a modicum of special privilege.
"Simon." Simon's gaze flicks between Wille's face, his shoes, the book in is hand. "Are you Swedish?"
"Uh, yeah. But I've lived in Canada for a decade now."
"Jag kommer också från Sverige," Simon says.
Great. As if sharing his cabin weren't already going to make relaxing difficult, now he'd have a constant reminder of Sweden and everything he's trying to leave behind before he gets home to Vancouver. "Cool," Wille answers in English.
Simon's expression barely changes, but the warmth is gone now, his face closed off and his smile less genuine. Wille fights a little shiver; he wonders what it's like to really get on this guy's bad side.
"I'm gonna take a shower," he announces. He hopes Simon will take the hint and excuse himself to the dining car, but Simon just nods and settles back on the pillows that Wille had been previously dreaming of falling asleep on tonight.
Wille has barely stepped under the hot water for a moment before the pleasurable hum of the train's wheels is sliced by a piercing scream from somewhere further down the Prestige Class train car.

time after time for home by now! maybe say...3 years on? what are matthew and leon up to? how are brady and quinn doing?
i'm always so interested in hearing more about that fic and its universe (i'm the person doing the line by line re-read commentary :)) life's gotten very busy since i started but hopefully i'll be able to get back to it soon!)
okay well first of all you're an angel! i hope you get some free time back soon but i deeply understand that life gets busy sometimes ❤
anyway three years on from home by now! that's the beginning of the 2029-30 nhl season, which sounds extremely made up. the blues have been drifting somewhere in the muddy middle for a few years -- it's fun for my made-up story, but giving up tons of assets and cap space for a couple of guys in their late 20s/early 30s isn't actually ideal asset management in a hard cap league. but they've got too many good players to be horrible, and they're scraping into the playoffs most years. no cups, though, and both matthew and leon are looking at the remainders of their contracts and -- wondering. leon especially.
he'll be 36 when his current deal is up, and he does want to win. and he doesn't know if that's going to happen with the blues. it's not an easy conversation to have, though. does leon want to ask for a trade in his final year? before that? does he want a real shot at a cup more than he wants to keep waking up next to matthew every morning? there's no right answers.
matthew feels clingy and petulant about the idea of being left, but he also wants to win. he hasn't quite given up on the idea of winning in st louis with leon, the childhood fantasy of it all. they still both have four years left on their contracts! leon's aging pretty well, without too many injuries grinding him down yet, he could sign a short deal after!
so they're muddling through all that, and it's not the first thing they've fought about but it's definitely the fight that's lasted the longest. and matthew's touchy about it, because st louis is his in a way that it isn't for leon. but they're pretty good at this stuff by now. they're not gonna break up about it. leon would prefer it if keith had input on fewer parts of his life, but he's not going to begrudge matthew being close to his family, he's just going to gripe a little privately, and sometimes tell keith to fuck off. (keith takes this with aplomb, since it's not like matthew doesn't tell him to fuck off. the rest of the family thinks it's hilarious.)
in the intervening three years, quinn gets himself over to the eastern conference. pick your poison here, maybe he signs as a free agent, maybe he tells the canucks he won't sign an extension and gets traded. his whole family's there, brady's there, so on and so forth. not detroit -- he and brady have an agreement that neither of them will go to the places their families live unless it's both of them, because they're not going to start building that life unless it's together -- but maybe toronto or montreal? toronto would be funnier for me but montreal is closer to ottawa. either way, much closer to brady! they see each other so much more, even if it's sometimes stressful when they're in a playoff race or something. they've dodged any actual series against each other, at least. not that they couldn't handle it, but they'd both rather not.
something that was surprisingly hard for brady was getting to watch matthew just trip sideways into a stage of life that's basically on hold for brady until at least one of him and quinn retires. matthew fucked around and instead of finding out he got a hot boyfriend on his team that he gets to see every day and have over for family dinners and live with. he's happy for matthew, but the first time matthew complains about how hard they have to work to get space ... brady does not handle it as gracefully as would be ideal.
but overall everyone's doing pretty good, y'know? no one's winning it all~~ but they're aiming their lives in the ways they want. taryn has a new boyfriend that everyone would be very happy if she married. matthew and leon got a second dog, who is somehow even more teddy bear shaped. they mostly don't bother to pretend they aren't together, but at least half the guys on the team think they're just really close friends because sports are Like That. brady thinks it's hilarious when people ask him about it like, did you think your brother would end up such good friends with draisaitl after all that rivalry? and he's just like, friends, sure, yeah. love and hate are two sides of the same coin or whatever.

Leon buying a house next door to Mcdavid is weird. Not in a gay way. It’s weird in a codependent attachment way. no person let alone grown man should be that attached to remaining in the shadow of another man that they feel the urge to buy a holiday house nextdoor. They are with each other EVERYDAY for 6+ months out of the year. Is a summer break spent with your fiancé or family too much to fucking handle? Does he not want to spend break in Germany the place HE said he will move back to when he retires? He needs to spend summer with his coworker that he just saw everyday and traveled across the country with for months? Can his legs not move to train themselves unless he has Mc Jesus by his side? It’s not normal. It wasn’t normal when Nathan did it to Sidney and whoever the fuck has done it before. It’s a weird idolization. Notice Nathan brings up Sidney every chance he gets, and even said he had luck to win the cup from staying in 87 hotel room. Even the sponsors notice this obsession and the Tim Horton commercial is filmed together annually. Nathan said he will only to it with Sidney. Once again, not gay intentions, but a clearly actions stemming from an infatuation due to lack of individual identity. Notice how Crosby doesn’t give af because he’s generally a laid back guy, same as Mcdavid. but you have Leon and Nathan making sure to mention “he’s my best friend” every chance they get as if it’s relevant information that applies to the conversation at hand. But let’s be clear the obsession is one sided, in both of these friendships. Once again Mcdavid didn’t have Leon as a best man, yet Leon bought a house next to his. LOL. Connor clearly doesn’t mind Leon’s infatuation as long as it keeps him busy enough from Lauren having her phone in his face making him pose for instagram pictures with that damn dog. (jk the dog is cute) ..No Leon doesn’t want to be Connor’s boyfriend, Yes Leon wants to be apart of every moment of Connors life because he lacks secure individuality. That’s probably why he agreed to date Celeste, after all Lauren was her best friend and set them up, Leon initially probably saw it as a perfect way to be better connected to Connor’s world-and it explains the disinterest Leon has with Celeste. It’s all just my random theory anyway. A non romantic one sided obsession.
-🇲🇽
I have mixed feelings about Leon's actions so far let's see how it will be in practice yes, he will want to go home to Germany, but having real estate in his wife's homeland is not such an absurd idea probably Celeste chose this house more for her own interests, besides, in the summer, players participate in private training camps with coaches in Toronto or LA, and buying a house there is quite reasonable from my point of view Ovi and Orlov also have apartments next door in Miami, but their wives vacationed there more (besides, real estate is an investment)
on the path to victory all means are fair I even wonder if their common life will help them win at least one Stanley Cup

"Water Wheel Power Plant Lights Village, 30 Houses," Toronto Star. April 9, 1943. Page 8. ---- THIS GENERATOR LIGHTS HORNINGS MILLS ---- THE PINE RIVER DAM WHICH DRIVES IT --- By PAUL L. FOX --- Hornings Mills, April 9 - On the upper reaches of the Pine river is one of the smallest power plants in Ontario. A water wheel propelled at a terrific rate by the stream saddles sufficient power to serve 30 homes.
The power plant is owned by T. R. Huxtable, former reeve of Barrie, who has retired to Hornings Mills where he has trout fishing properties and the power plant. Mr. Huxtable's power lights the streets of the police village of Hornings Mills and 30 homes within the limits of the community.
The idea of a privately-owned power plant is not original, nor is this the only one in the province. Within a 100-mile radius of Toronto there are three such systems, one at Orillia which serves the whole. town: one at Erin which serves a large section in the vicinity of the: Caledon mountains, and the one. here, smallest of the three.
No Break in Service Mr. Huxtable was manager of the Pine River Light and Power Co. 25 years ago before it was taken over by Ontario Hydro. This company served homes in Orangeville and Shelburne and districts, including Hornings Mills.
"The Pine River company served homes in Hornings Mills for five years before Hydro took it over, and Hydro continued the service for 17 years," he said. "Then the trustees objected to the expense and decided to start their own system. I offered to set up a plant and sell them the power, That was 10 years ago, and there has been no down or an interruption in service," said Mr. Huxtable.
"The rates for power are much the same as Hydro rates but this year we will be able to offer our consumers a 25 per cent. reduction, making rates lower," he said. "When the system was inaugurated the trustees took out 10-year debentures for $3,800 to repair the street lighting in the town. Those debentures will be retired at the end of this year and our rates will accordingly be lower."
The plant is confined to a small one-storey frame building with a cement foundation and cellar. Water from a dam is piped into the base- ment through a 16-inch turbine operating under 33-foot head of water using 700 cubic feet per minute and developing 35 horsepower.
The present set-up is sufficient to service 50 homes without any alterations, Mr. Huxtable explained. With some adjustments a larger number of consumers can be serviced.
Water piped into the water wheel propels another in the cellar, which in turn drives a generator delivering 2,200 volts, 60-cycle alternating current. This is broken down to 220 and 110-volt currents.
A short fishing jacket, breeks, rubber boots and a battered felt hat is "Tom" Huxtable's attire as he services his electrical plant. Every year Mr. Huxtable stocks the Pine river with between 4.000 and 5,000 trout. He served on Barrie council about 15 years ago, and started the Barrie-Allandale bus line.

Nuclear energy will play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Most of the Nice texas Christian University Fast Worth shirt plants are expected to be built in countries with price-regulated markets or where government-owned entities build, own and operate the plants, or where governments act to facilitate private investment. Clearer policies are needed to encourage operators to invest in both long-term operation and new build so as to replace retiring units,” said the report. “Governments should ensure price transparency and the stable policies required for investment in large capital-intensive and long-lived base-load power. Policies should support a level playing field for all sources of low-carbon power projects.” This is particularly important to OECD countries, where nuclear power is the largest source of low-carbon electricity, providing 18% of their total electricity. Even though the use of electricity grows over the timeframe to 2050, the increase of nuclear power from 377 GWe today would contribute 13% of the emissions reduction needed to limit global warming. In the near term, small modular reactors “could extend the market for nuclear energy” and even replace coal boilers forced into closure in order to improve air quality. “Governments and industry should work together to accelerate the development of SMR prototypes and the launch of construction projects (about five projects per design) needed to demonstrate the benefits of modular design and factory assembly.” In the longer term the IEA wants so-called Generation IV reactor and fuel cycle designs to be ready for deployment in 2030-40.

David would be thrown into a small cage with other children and were to eat and fatten up to be cooked by their chefs. Here, David would meet a young Christopher Brenton who was four years older than David and assured David that if he ate little, he would not be killed.
And that happened, with David eating smaller scraps and not gaining weight, much to the frustrations of the head chef. Around this time, David was branded with a hot iron and was named "46" for he was to be goods, shipped out on a later date. Scared for his life, David and Chris plotted to escape, but suddenly they were saved when the Organization agents broke into the Cult and arrested or killed the Cultists. Finding the remaining children alongside David and Chris, they took them back to their homes. However, David and Chris, who have become highly inspired by their deeds of saving them, asked if they could join.
Because they have seen too much and figured out that monsters exist, Chris and David would be enrolled into the Organization's private academy where they would train under their teacher, Florence Mayweather. Florence was hard on the boys, but trained them this way so they wouldn't grow soft and get killed.

Private Retirement Homes Toronto
Tumblr media
The citizens, who have crossed their retirement age are often addressed as ‘senior citizens’, ‘elderly’ and ‘aged’ ones. Especially in a country like Canada, the bare fact is that population of this segment has increased steadily over a period of time.
With steady rise in income levels, a growing number of many senior citizens are now economically independent and are able to pay for facilities and services related to their residential, physical, medical and psychological needs.
Going by the current trend and to have an independent and comfortable retired life, such senior citizens prefer to reside in Retirement homes. Accordingly, retired persons look for a nicely built, commercially developed and professionally managed retirement home near me.
The growing demand of retirement home Cobourg indicates that there are a large number of retired persons who wish for living independently from their families. Their decision to live independently may be influenced by certain specific reasons like access to peaceful living with people of almost same age group, recreational activities, gatherings and security besides health and hospice care.
A retirement home Oshawa can be either rented like an apartment or perpetually bought from the builders and developers like a condominium.
Facilities expected by senior and retired persons
Most people feel themselves physically and mentally fit and alert and are capable of leading an independent life with dignity and grace. Although there is great increase in life expectancy among senior citizens all over the world due to availability of better medical and other living facilities yet during advancing age need for medical assistance may arise at anytime.
Keeping above in mind, senior retired citizens look for an affordable and comfortable Retirement home Peterborough. They expect the home to provide them safety; better mobility; health and recreational facilities that help them lead a better quality of life.
Owing to the growing demand for Retirement home Whitby due to the rapid rise in nuclear families and children moving away to distant cities or countries to pursue their career; many builders and developers have come up with special retirement homes and communities in Whitby.
What retirement homes provide to senior persons?
Every retirement home Whitby, Cobourg or Peterborough is planned and designed to offer specific facilities and amenities to meet the basic requirements of seniors such as age friendly architecture, medical aid and transport facilities. In addition retirement homes can be a sort of assurance of security, independence and companionship.
Just like housing societies, the retirement homes usually sprawl over large area and offer various entertainment and recreational facilities such as swimming pool, gyms, meditation center for spiritual activities and organize Yoga classes.
In retirement housing plan, a provision is usually kept for indoor games like playing badminton, table tennis and billiard room etc. In addition to the above, a senior citizen residing in a nicely built retirement home Oshawa can avail specific home care services, such as:
Personal Services
Medical
Housekeeping
Nutrition
Logistic
Emergency response
The residents can also avail senior care services like companion care, pet care and other socialization needs.
There may be a plethora of retirement homes but Tower of Port Hope Retirement Residence offers the most reliable, comfortable retirement homes that not only provide a cozy accommodation but respectable, compassionate and comfortable living to retired seniors.

Hey, i hope you're doing good girlie 💕 so I got back from my trip to Toronto and thought of the story concept - Shawn bringing his girl to Toronto for the first time, showing her around, bringing her to his favorite places, going to his childhood home, etc. And in general, him being a cute bf, fixing her hair after wind messes it up, opening the door for her, holding her hand, small pecks on the lips everywhere they go 🥺Thanks 😊

Shawn Mendes x female reader
Word Count: ~1.2k
Warning ⚠️: fluff, maybe grammar error and maybe some punctuation errors.
A/N: This took me forever so sorry lol, but do let me know what you think about my attempt 😅.
One
After getting cleaned up and gathering for a hearty dinner, everyone retires to their bedrooms for the night. You settle in bed, running your hands over the soft bedspread when you hear a knock on the door.
“Come in!”
Not to your surprise, Shawn pokes his head through the door and enters the room.
“Thought you could use a few pre-bedtime snuggles.”
“Like we didn’t get enough of that today,” You tease.
“Hey…” He climbs into bed next to you, “I have been so busy with rehearsals. I want to make up for the lost time.” He smiles, leaving a trail of kisses down your collarbone before setting to your lips.
“Hmm…Am I actually going to get any sleep tonight?”
“Okay, okay, I’ll let you get some much-deserved shut-eye,” He chuckles, “You’ll need it. I’ve planned a big day in the city for us tomorrow.”
Shawn switches off the light, and you rest your head against his chest, drifting to sleep almost immediately.
Two
“Cmon, I want to show you something.”
Shawn takes your hand in his and leads you around behind one of the enormous-looking trees, hidden away from the rest of the crowd.
“And.. what attraction is this?”
“The most memorable of all,” He grinned, “Where I had my first kiss.”
“Ah, yes,” You chuckle, “Against an old tree, how charming.”
“Hey, don’t laugh!” He playfully tells you, “I have a lot of good memories at this park.”
“And was your first kiss one of them?”
“Was my first kiss a good memory?” He pondered for a moment, “I suppose so. I remember spending the entire day gathering up the courage to make it happen. I was so nervous, but one thing led to another; we leaned against this tree to hide so we could hide from our friends, then my hand moved to brush her hair off her face and…voila, the first kiss.
“That’s an aggressively wholesome story.”
“What about you? Do you have a good first kiss story?”
“My first kiss was at a ridiculous spin the bottle game,” You shrugged, “Not nearly as sweet or private, for that matter.”
“Well…Why don’t we have a do over?”
“Hmm, I don’t know, Shawn,” You purse your lips and put a finger to your chin as if you were contemplating.
“Come here, you,” gently, he pushes you up against the tree and gives you a long, slow kiss. He pulls you against him, deepening the kiss, “Alright, this do-over is already better than the original one.”
“Good to know,” He wraps his arms around you and presses his body closer to yours. Your breath hitches as a trail down the curve of your throat. You flutter with giggles as he swings you around before pinning you against the tree again. His mouth feels hot against yours, one hand tracing your cheek and the other sliding around your waist, “More?”
“Yes, please.”
He leans down, kissing you again, long and slow, nibbling at your lower lip.
Three
"And this is Shawn’s first day of school."
Shawn walked in, heard his mom, and promptly freaked out. He walked quickly, not running, to the living room and found his mom and you sitting on the couch, both cozy-looking and just staring at the album of photos.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
"Oh! Shawn, you're home! Good. I was getting to know Y/n."
"If you're getting to know Y/n, then why are you showing him pictures of me?"
Shawn was truthfully embarrassed. He was an awkward-looking kid with crooked braces and that weird-looking haircut.
He didn't want you to see all of that yet. But regardless, he made his way over and sat on the other side of you anyway. The three of you looked down at him wearing his cute oversized shirts or him dancing awkwardly at that one Christmas party.
"Look how cute you were!" You bumped his shoulder affectionately.
"Were?"
“Well," You giggle, “Don’t worry, you still are."
Four
You and Shawn stroll around his hometown, admiring the city's lights at night. Together you share a companionable silence; the air feels cool and refreshing against your skin.
Although the shops along the street are closed for the night, people are still walking, laughing, and talking with their significant others.
“It’s even more beautiful than I’d imagine.”
“And yet I think you’re the most beautiful thing here,” He said quietly, lips pressed to your temple.
“Please never stop being so cheesy,” you replied, smiling slightly and kissing the back of his hand.
Five
The weather was foul from the beginning of the day. Dark grey clouds gathered in the sky, and the sun didn’t make its presence known. The wind began to blow, and gradually it began to get stronger and stronger. But that didn’t stop the two of you from taking a stroll around the city.
You find yourself dashing down to the streets and right into the windy weather; his hands are warming yours as you cross the road, and your laughter is ringing through the air.
“Shawn! You’re going too fast!”
You stumble after him, but you don’t worry, you’ll fall. For some reason, you know that he’d catch you if you did.
You eventually reach an awning at the train station across the street, and he whips you around to face him, pulling you close.
You were breathing hard from the mad dash across the street, and your hair was dancing in the wind when you looked back at your boyfriend and found him staring at you intensely, “Everything okay?”
“Yeah..” He smiles at you, reaching out to brush your hair from your forehead and tucking it behind your ear, “I suppose I'm just so happy you’re here with me.”
You catch his hand, lacing your fingers through his and holding it to your cheek, “Thank you for inviting me here.”
Six
Shawn watched as you ran around the park with oreo. The little puppy was scrambling to keep up with you, and your giggles filled his ears and sent a warm sensation throughout his body.
“You are in so deep,” he heard his sister say.
He looked at her puzzled, “What’s wrong with being in love?”
“Nothing. But with you being in love? It’s kinda disgusting.”
Shawn laughed, “How is it disgusting?!”
Aaliyah rolled her eyes, “All you talk about is Y/N. Y/N looks so pretty. She’s such an angel. I’m going to marry her someday. Blah blah.”
“Alright. Alright. I get it. But you can’t blame me for being so in love.”
Aaliyah scrunched her face up, “Again. It’s disgusting.”
“Whatever you talk about your boyfriend in that lovey-dovey way too, whether you admit it or not,” Shawn chuckles and mumbles before turning his attention back to you, who was lightly jogging back up to where they were, “Man! Who knew such a little dog like that would have that much energy.” You sighed, wiping your forehead, and took a seat next to Shawn.
Shawn smiled, pulling you into his embrace, “But it looks like a blast,” He said and began to pepper kisses all over your face, “I love it when I can see my baby having fun.”
“Shawn! I’m all sweaty and gross.”
“Don’t care baby, you look so irresistibly cute right now.”
Aaliyah whined, “Ew! You guys, please stop being disgustingly adorable, I’m literally sitting right here!”

Absolutely heartbreaking.
Laali was alone at home when she realised her legs were drenched in blood. The bleeding did not stop for eight hours. As she fell unconscious, the 25-year-old thought she would die alongside the foetus she was losing.
She had been three months pregnant when she was taken for prenatal sex determination. “When I learned it was a girl, I started feeling as though I was suffocating,” she says.
An abortion pill was forced down her throat, without a doctor’s supervision, and subsequent complications led to hospitalisation. The night she was released, Laali cried herself to sleep – and in the morning returned to her work in the fields.
Laali’s unborn daughter is among India’s estimated 46 million “missing females” over a period of 50 years, ten times the female population of London. A deepening gender bias, breeding rampant sex-selective abortions and female infanticides, means that India accounts for nearly half of global missing female births.
“The traditional pattern of marriage and customs dictate an inferior position to women in Indian societies,” says Prem Chowdhry, a gender activist and retired professor at the University of Delhi. Since girls leave their birth family after marriage, she says, the dowry and cost of raising a girl is considered an unwelcome obligation, and sex-selective abortions are common.
Prenatal sex determination was criminalised in 1994, but it is a widely flouted law. The practice has thrived with medical advancements, spread to more regions, and is still easily accessible in privately run clinics.
Surrounded by vast sugar cane fields, Laali’s village is 40 miles from Delhi. Social health activists who run an unregistered support group for women here estimate that “every third house in the village” has aborted a foetus because of the sex.
“Families want a son at any cost. Any cost!” Laali says. “If I die, my husband will remarry tomorrow morning, hoping the next woman will give birth to a son.”
Laali was 19 when her marriage was arranged with a farmer in 2009. In the next three years, she gave birth to two daughters. During her second pregnancy, she was regularly drugged by traditional and faith healers in order to “make” a boy.
When her baby girl was born, no one from her family came to see them in the hospital. Returning home was worse. “My mother-in-law refused to see my daughter’s face,” Laali said. “She refused to take care of me, saying: ‘you are giving birth to girl after girl. How far can I take care of you?’”
Every night, as she sat down for dinner after a day of labour in the field, someone would toss in a taunt. “When anyone had a son in the village, it was a nightmare for me,” she recalls. “My family abused me in front of my girls.”
The government of India appears unwilling to act. A recent government survey hailed the fact that there are more women than men for the first time. However, activists on the ground and experts are sceptical of the data. “The main objective of the survey was to look into data on reproductive health and family welfare indicators and not on the population sex ratio,” said Sabu George, a researcher and activist based in Delhi. “All state-wise trends show a different picture.”
Dr Prabhat Jha of the University of Toronto, who led India’s Million Death Study, agrees: “The UN Population Division, the most careful demographic work, estimates the number of ‘excess men’ in India is growing.”
Tumblr media
India’s own registrar general’s estimate suggests a similar trend.
A 2021 Lancet research paper, co-authored by Jha, claimed that the situation has worsened, with missing female births increasing from 3.5 million in 1987–96 to 5.5 million in 2007–16.
The male child bias has cut through class and geographical divisions. In August, a 40-year-old woman from a wealthy upper-class Mumbai family said she was forced to abort eight times to satisfy the family’s desire for a son. She was given more than 1,500 hormonal and steroid injections before she lodged a police complaint. Last year, in southern India’s Karnataka, a 28-year-old woman died after complications during a third forced abortion.
Endless harassment pushed Laali to seek psychiatric help, and she is currently on medication. Two abortions and a surgery later, doctors have advised her to not get pregnant again. “My womb has weakened and my body cannot bear another child,” she said.
Family interference can cause huge stress for women. Bhavna Joshi, 39, from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, had eight pregnancies in her 11 years of marriage, and finds her experience so painful to talk about that she only wants to share the basic facts: she was taken to “uncountable” numbers of traditional healers, had three abortions and lost two infants as babies. It didn’t stop until she finally gave birth to a son, now aged five.
After two abortions, Laali wishes for a boy too. “I want this to end. They are drugging me and I cannot eat or drink for days,” she said. “I just want out of it, badly.”
Over the past two decades, trends in sex-selective abortions have shifted. The Lancet research found that as more families in India become nuclear, abortions are more common with the third pregnancy. “Families let nature decide twice, but then – for the third time – they make sure it is a boy,” said Jha. “Violence against women is a cultural thing in India. The problem is going to get much worse before it might get better.”
After having two daughters, 36-year-old Meenakshi was taken by her in-laws for a prenatal sex test when she fell pregnant for the third time. “The area was completely deserted and hidden,” she says, hiding in another home for the interview. “I was scared. It wasn’t a normal clinic.”
Meenakshi, currently seven months pregnant, wasn’t directly told the result. “My husband and his mother looked happy so I understood it was going to be a boy,” she said. “Otherwise, they would have killed it [before the birth].”
In India’s deeply patriarchal society, women’s full sexual and reproductive rights are still a distant dream. Women like Meenakshi are fighting for acceptability in the family. Meenakshi’s parents raised her to expect freedom after marriage. But everything is worse, she says, sobbing.
For Laali, harassment is part of her daily life. By the time she was 15, her mother had aborted two female foetuses, and her younger sister has aborted at least three.
”You are brought up in an environment where this violence against women is completely acceptable and normalised,” says George. “The question is: how do you resist this on the ground? And that’s frightening.”
Both Laali and Meenakshi were isolated in society, lacking any emotional support. Talking of their experiences, hidden inside their rooms, makes them cry, and their daughters, all in their teens, console them with hugs. Laali and Meenakshi are desparately worried they will not be able to protect their daughters from similar trauma, but for now the girls are mostly oblivious.
Meenakshi’s eldest daughter jumps with joy as she sees a plane passing over their heads. “She wants to be a pilot,” says Meenakshi, wiping her tears. “When I cry, she tells me: ‘Mamma, it’ll get better, and one day we’ll fly together, in a plane that I’ll pilot.’”

"For a thousand bucks paid to the right person you can probably get someone killed…perhaps I'm surprised that hasn't happened"
Barry Sherman made this remark when being interviewed for the memoir he was working on.
Many found it an odd thing to say, with Barry and his wife Honey Sherman being some of the most kind and giving people they could think of. Others were not surprised, given Barry's often deplorable behavior.
Barry Sherman, 75, lived and worked in Toronto, Canada. He married Honey (neé Reich) in 1971 and the couple had four children.
Barry was the definition of a workaholic and he became the 12th richest Canadian according to Forbes. He gained his wealth by helping his uncle Louis Llyod Winter run a pharmaceutical company, later selling that company to start his own. He started Apotex and it became one of the largest generic drug companies in Canada.
On the surface it seemed Barry was a very generous man. Although he had denounced his Jewish religion, Honey was still in the faith, so The United Jewish Appeal received many donations from the couple. United Way was another charity they often gave to as well as sending medication to disaster relief zones.
Employees of Apotex commented several times Barry loaned many of them money when they were in need.
While very giving, Barry was equally combative. He was not shy to fight with the government, regularly sueing over new pharmaceutical regulations.
"He quickly demonstrated you can in fact bully the government and you can intimidate." said former Healthcan head of drug regulations Michele Brill Edwards.
Claims of gouging drug prices, withdrawing funding to universities, and false donations to charities followed the Shermans. Somehow Barry always came out on top.
Barry and his four cousins clashed in court in 2011. The sons of his uncle had sued Barry after finding that they were entitled to a percentage of the profit from selling Empire Laboratories. Barry had hid this information from them for years. After a long battle, a judge ruled against the Winter's stating their case was "wishful thinking, and beyond fanciful."
In December of 2017 Honey and Barry were in the process of moving closer to downtown Toronto and also planning a vacation to Miami.
On the night of December 13th Barry sent out a staff email regarding a new drug the company was working on and then seemingly went to bed.
Two days later, two house cleaning employees arrived at the Sherman residence at their scheduled time. A few hours later a realtor agent was let in along with a persepective buyer.
A tour of the home lead them down to the basement where they found the lifeless bodies of Barry and Honey Sherman near the pool.
Barry was fully clothed, sitting up, legs crossed, with a leather belt around his neck. Honey was also fully clothed, laying down with a belt around her neck and a bruise on her cheek. Both belts were tied above to a metal railing.
Upon the first investigation Toronto Police stated this was a possible murder-suicide.
The Sherman's children and those close to the family would not believe such a thing. Private detectives, a retired Toronto police detective, and a retired forensic pathologist was hired by the Sherman's children to further look in to the case.
By 2018 it was made public Toronto police found that the Shermans were murdered in a targeted attack but had no suspects. Police lead an investigation into the Apotex office, and questioned over 200 people.
One person questioned was Barry's cousin Kerry Winter, who had obvious motive with the litigations between he and Barry. He had even commented in an interview with television program Fifth Estate that he had imagined killing Barry. However, Winter stated on the night in question he had been at a Cocaine Anonymous meeting and then was at home watching t.v. creating a loose alibi.
Even with Barry and Honey's children offering a $10 million reward for information regarding a suspect, the murder remains unsolved.

Tessa Virtue on retiring from skating, starting her MBA and the women who most inspire her
March 15, 2020
Tumblr media
When we arrive on the Montreal set of RW&Co.'s spring campaign, the shoot is well under way. Tessa Virtue, wrapped in a fluffy white robe, is only too happy to show us around the styling room that has since become command central. Jewelry, accessories and shoes line nearly every surface, yet the ice-dancing superstar is unfazed, slipping into a pair of trendy white boots ahead of her next outfit switch.
For London, Ont.-born Tessa, 30, adapting to change is par for the course. Having announced her retirement from professional skating last fall after more than two decades (and five Olympic medals) on the ice with partner Scott Moir and wrapped their subsequent Stars on Ice tour, she's undaunted by what the future holds.
"It was a decision that, like most things in our career, came naturally," she tells HELLO! Canada of stepping away from competitive ice dancing. "We looked at each other one day and said, 'I really think this is it.' And it was as simple as that."
Perhaps because she made a name for herself as one half of a duo – albeit a gold-medalling one – Tessa (the youngest of four children) is keen to forge a path all her own. Having dipped her toe in fashion and beauty with several collaborations, she's ready to take on new challenges. Chief among these: studying for her MBA at Queen's University (she has almost completed her BA in psychology and holds an honorary doctorate from Western University) and launching her own business.
Tumblr media
Modelling pieces from RW&Co.'s spring collection, Tessa says, "There's a refined sense of elegance to their clothing, but there's also this whimsical, fun element that allows people to express themselves in a really unique way. And I love finding that balance." Photo: © Andrew Soule
"I've always had this dream of building something from the ground up," shares the star. Love could be in the cards, too – Tessa reveals that she's taking a date to Scott's wedding this summer!
HELLO! Canada: How has your life changed since your retirement?
Tessa Virtue: I have to say, it feels quite natural to be off skates for extended periods of time now. I think without that singular focus of wanting to be the best, I don't feel such a void. What I might miss is the desire to perform and share in that moment with a crowd, or create something with Scott. It will be a task, to find a creative outlet in a different capacity – maybe business or school.
You're going back to school in September. Tell us about that decision.
I've stayed in school part-time, basically since I entered university when I was 17 – I'm just a few credits shy of my psychology degree. That semblance of normalcy of being on campus was important to me, feeling like I was broadening my horizons outside skating. And I've always known that I wanted to be in business. I have a very fierce entrepreneurial spirit, reinforced by being my own boss as an athlete. I'm so excited to embrace the MBA program. I can't wait – I think it will be just a thrilling challenge academically when I've done something physically for such a long time.
Does this mean you'll be able to put down roots?
It's funny, because in figuring out my schedule, that seems a little limiting already. Mentally, I'm fighting that restlessness because I've become so accustomed to life on the road. But I do think it will be healthy for me to be more grounded. It doesn't mean I have to say no to opportunities, but it will be nice to have my suitcases unpacked for longer than an hour! As it is, I'm home in London about one day a month. And every time I do get home, it's such a respite – it's calm, and as someone who's real-estate-obsessed, I'm always looking. I do look forward to being in Toronto a lot more.

Are you hoping for more balance in your life?
Yes – I was so specialized for so long and now I'm trying on different hats, but that's also what's keeping me inspired after 20-some odd years of showing up at the rink and doing the same thing over and over again in the same way. I loved it, but that kind of lifestyle is difficult to maintain. And I realize now that [Scott and I ] did sacrifice a lot. You kind of live a life of depravity when you're training like that, and it's nice to feel somewhat free; it's liberating.
What are you incorporating into your life now that you couldn't before?
The biggest thing is personal relationships and friendships. Everyone in my life has been so supportive for such a long time, but that takes a toll. For me, quality time is the most important thing in any kind of relationship. It will be nice to establish that with the people closest to me, and reconnect and maybe redefine success, because I have to figure out who I am when I'm not in that Moulin Rouge costume.
It's clear you have a passion for fashion.
I come by that pretty honestly; my mom ( Kate) is the most stylish human I've ever met. It's how we express our individuality. I look to my wardrobe to help foster a sense of confidence and self-worth.
Tumblr media

What will you miss most about not seeing Scott every day?
We'll always have that deep-rooted respect for one another, but I'll miss being so in sync that we didn't even need to speak. I'll miss knowing his sense of humour inside and out and getting to share our fears and vulnerabilities. It builds such trust.
Are you taking a date to Scott's wedding to skater Jackie Mascarin in July?
Yes – I like keeping that part of my life really private. It's always something I've kept to myself and it's nice when you get to just enjoy that part of your life.
Tumblr media
In honour of International Women's Day on March 8, 2019, Tessa was one of 20 female role models to be re-imagined as a Barbie doll. The only Canadian in the group, "Tessa, like other honourees, was chosen because through hard work, determination and dedication, she shows girls every day that you can be anything," said Lisa Perry, brand manager at Mattel Canada. Photo: © Mattel, Inc.
You inspire millions of women and girls. Do you have people who inspire you in your own life?
People laugh at me because I'm sort of obsessed with connecting with people who inspire me. [Olympic rower] Marnie McBean has been a mentor right from the beginning... and one of my best friends is [Olympic skier] Jennifer Heil. After the Olympics I thought I was unique, and that maybe because the high was so high, the low inevitably needed to be low, but [now I realize] everyone is facing change and dealing with transition. I'm not alone. And that's reassuring.

Home//CEO!Shawn
a/n: i know the ceo!universe is inherently smutty but i’ve been in a soft cuddly shawn mood lately sooooo here’s this lol
⚠️warnings: none just some annoyingly sweet fluff
word count: 1.1K
Weekdays for Shawn typically went a little something like this: wake up at around 6am. Gym until 7am, and out the door for work by 8am. There are phone calls, and meeting after meeting until lunch at 2pm (eaten in his office of course). Then, depending on the day of the week, he’d come home at about 5pm to you on his couch working on a paper or grading poor undergrads’ papers. He’d spend a little time with you. Have Melinda make something for the two of you to eat at about 7pm and it was back in his home office until 11pm. He’d finally retreated to the bedroom to find you sleep soundly, in one of his shirts looking like (in his eyes) the definition of perfection. It was his routine.  So it was a bit of a shock to the system to see you sitting up in bed awake as ever hunched over your laptop when he finally stepped into his bedroom at nearly one in the morning.
“I thought I was supposed to be the workaholic around here.” Shawn smiled, leaning against the door frame of the master bedroom.
“Hey, you.” You smile, looking up at him only for a moment before turning your attention back to your laptop, typing away.
“What are you doing?”  he asks sauntering over to his side of the bed placing a kiss to the top of your head.
“Answering emails. Looking for movers, which is a lot more difficult than I thought by the way.”
After 2 months of Shawn nearly begging you to move in with him you’d finally agreed. You weren’t sure about it at first, you always felt like you were taking too much from him, and you didn’t want to be ‘that girl.’ But he kept assuring you that it was okay and pressing how he just wanted to take care of you so you caved. All it took was a little pout and a batting of his lashes and you’d agree to anything he’d say.
“I told you I can handle it.”
“I know Shawn but I don’t want you to do everything. 50/50 remember.”
“Honey it’d be so much easier-”
“50/50.”
“Alright, 50/50.” he nods, but you can see him biting the inside of his cheek, trying to stop himself from starting another argument.
He closes your laptop for you, tossing it aside before cuddling into you, laying his head into your lap. It was your cue to thread your fingers through his hair, and give him a little massage. He loved having his hair played with and it never stopped you from giggling whenever he leaned into your touch.
“It’s going to be nice having you here.”
“I’m here nearly everyday Shawn.” you smile looking down at him.
“I know but now this will be home for you. And I know you’ll be here when I come back from shitty business trips. And that you’re safe when I’m not around.” he beginnings gnawing at his bottom lip before he lets out a deep sigh.
“What?”
“You can still change your mind,”  he mumbles looking away from you.
“What, no. Why would I do that?”
“Forget it.” He sighs, shaking his head. He sits up and shimmies his way to his side of the bed, ready to turn away from you but you stop him.
“Tell me.”
He doesn’t say anything for a while, just biting the inside of his cheek, running his fingers through his curls.“I know this is different for you, and that you get overwhelmed sometimes...”
“Shawn, I’m way past that.”
The first time you went to his house, the first time he took you on a ‘business trip’ flying private, the shopping sprees ‘just because’, all of that was overwhelming, to say the least. And insecurity would sneak up every once in awhile, hell how could it not. He was the son of one of the most wealthy and powerful families in Toronto, set to inherit everything thing when his father retired, and you were just a grad student, working a shitty desk job to get through school. What the hell would he want to do with someone like you? But he stayed. He downright invaded your life, but you were happy about it. He was one of the best things to happen to you in a long time, and even with all the things that came attached with him, all you saw was Shawn. A fact that made him fall in love with you even more.
“I know you say you are, but all of this - I know it’s. My job, my family. The fucking galas and charity balls, if you don’t want to dive in completely then I get it. We can keep things like they are and -”
As soon as you moved in his life would become yours. He wanted you to know that you could have an escape in your own place. That you could step out of the crazy life of being almost Mrs. Mendes whenever you needed it. If you needed, because there was nothing Shawn feared more than you decide that you would rather have a simpler life, than that of a socialite.
“Shawn, stop. None of that stuff matters,” he looked at you with the saddest puppy eyes you’d ever seen. “It was strange at first and I went through a bit of a learning curve, but you helped me through it and I'm used to it now if that’s the word. Besides I want to move in because I love you, and I hate it when your away. The rest of the stuff is just that. Stuff.”
He’d never met someone like you. You were there for him. You didn’t care about his job or his family or his money. For some reason unbeknownst to him you loved him.
“I love you.”
“Love you too bubs.”
He smiles up at you leaning over to his nightstand. But it's that smile, that you know he’s about to do or say something stupid, and then you see the signature blue box.
“Shawn...”
“I know! It’s just stuff but I couldn’t help it,” he admits, with a sheepish smile. He really couldn't help himself when it came to spoiling you. No matter how much you would protest, he could never bring himself to walk away from something that reminded him of you.
He opens the small box, revealing a beautiful silver tennis bracelet with a single charm dangling from it. A little silver key.
“Consider it a housewarming present,” he says, carefully taking it out of its box and adjusting it around your wrist.
You admire it, noticing the way it sparkled as the light hit it in different ways. “It’s beautiful. Thank you.” you smile up at him, the biggest grin etched on your face.
“Welcome home, babe.”

By Naomi Fry 2:58 P.M.
Last week, I read a report in the Times about the current conditions on Mt. Everest, where climbers have taken to shoving one another out of the way in order to take selfies at the peak, creating a disastrous human pileup. It struck me as a cogent metaphor for how we live today: constantly teetering on the precipice to grasp at the latest popular thing. The story, like many stories these days, provoked anxiety, dread, and a kind of awe at the foolishness of fellow human beings. Luckily, the Internet has recently provided us with an unlikely antidote to everything wrong with the news cycle: the actor Keanu Reeves.
Take, for instance, a moment, a few weeks ago, when Reeves appeared on “The Late Show” to promote “John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum,” the latest installment in his action-movie franchise. Near the end of the interview, Stephen Colbert asked the actor what he thought happens after we die. Reeves was wearing a dark suit and tie, in the vein of a sensitive mafioso who is considering leaving it all behind to enter the priesthood. He paused for a moment, then answered, with some care, “I know that the ones who love us will miss us.” It was a response so wise, so genuinely thoughtful, that it seemed like a rebuke to the usual canned blather of late-night television. The clip was retweeted more than a hundred thousand times, but, when I watched it, I felt like I was standing alone in a rock garden, having a koan whispered into my ear.
Reeves, who is fifty-four, has had a thirty-five-year career in Hollywood. He was a moody teen stoner in “River’s Edge” and a sunny teen stoner in the “Bill & Ted” franchise; he was the tortured sci-fi action hero in the “Matrix” movies and the can-do hunky action hero in “Speed”; he was the slumming rent boy in “My Own Private Idaho,” the scheming Don John in “Much Ado About Nothing,” and the eligible middle-aged rom-com lead in “Destination Wedding.” Early in his career, his acting was often mocked for exhibiting a perceived skater-dude fuzziness; still, today, on YouTube, you can find several gleeful compilations of Reeves “acting badly.” (“I am an F.B.I. agent,” he shouts, not so convincingly, to Patrick Swayze in “Point Break.”) But over the years the peculiarities of Reeves’s acting style have come to be seen more generously. Though he possesses a classic leading-man beauty, he is no run-of-the-mill Hollywood stud; he is too aloof, too cipher-like, too mysterious. There is something a bit “Man Who Fell to Earth” about him, an otherworldliness that comes across in all of his performances, which tend to have a slightly uncanny, declamatory quality. No matter what role he plays, he is always himself. He is also clearly aware of the impression he makes. In the new Netflix comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” starring the standup comedian Ali Wong, he makes a cameo as a darkly handsome, black-clad, self-serious Keanu, speaking in huskily theatrical, quasi-spiritual sound bites that either baffle or arouse those around him. “I’ve missed your spirit,” he gasps at Wong, while kissing her, open-mouthed.
Though we’ve spent more than three decades with Reeves, we still know little about him. We know that he was born in Beirut, and that he is of English and Chinese-Hawaiian ancestry. (Ali Wong has said that she cast him in “Always Be My Maybe” in part because he’s Asian-American, even if many people forget it.) His father, who did a spell in jail for drug dealing, left home when Keanu was a young boy. His childhood was itinerant, as his mother remarried several times and moved the family from Sydney to New York and, finally, Toronto. We know that he used to play hockey, and that he is a motorcycle buff, and that he has experienced unthinkable tragedy: in the late nineties, his girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, gave birth to their child, who was stillborn; two years later, Syme died in a car accident. Otherwise, Reeves’s life is a closed book. Who is he friends with? What is his relationship with his family like? As Alex Pappademas wrote, for a cover story about the actor in GQ, in May, Reeves has somehow managed to “pull off the nearly impossible feat of remaining an enigmatic cult figure despite having been an A-list actor for decades.”
This inscrutability makes each new detail we learn about Reeves’s life seem like a revelatory gift. On a recent appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the actor admitted, twenty-five years after the fact, that he had a crush on Sandra Bullock when the two were filming “Speed.” Last week, a Malaysian Web site claimed that, in an interview, Reeves confessed to being lonely. “I don’t have anyone in my life,” he supposedly said, adding, “Hopefully it’ll happen for me.” The Internet responded with a collective shriek of longing. When it was reported, on Saturday, that, according to Reeves’s rep, the quotes had been fabricated, it almost didn’t matter. The Internet’s desire to plumb the hidden depths of this gorgeous puzzle of a man, and to serve as a balm to his perceived hurt, had been so strong that it willed this bit of news into existence.
The outpouring of horny sympathy recalled an earlier episode, in 2010, when paparazzi pictures appeared showing the actor sitting on a New York City park bench and eating a sandwich, looking scruffy and in low spirits. So emerged the “Sad Keanu” meme; June 15th was even declared, by fans, “Cheer Up Keanu Day.” But, unlike the “Sad Ben Affleck” meme, which came in response to a swaggery alpha male’s public descent, Sad Keanu was not animated by Schadenfreude. It simply brought to the fore the retiring, not-long-for-this-world sensitivity that we had always intuited was there.
Recently, a slew of people have come forward to share their real-life “Keanu Stories.” (A bizarrely large number seem to have encountered him at one time or another, perhaps owing to the fact that he often travels alone and without handlers.) The image of him that emerges from these anecdotes is of a considerate man who is aware of his status as a celebrity but doesn’t take advantage of it, and who is generous but careful with his presence. After a flight he was on from San Francisco to L.A. had to make an emergency landing in Bakersfield, Reeves helped passengers recruit a van to transport them the remaining way; en route, he read facts about Bakersfield aloud and played country tunes on his phone for the group. He signed an autograph for a sixteen-year-old ticket seller at a movie theatre after intuiting that the teen was too shy to ask him for one directly. He called an indie bookstore in advance, once a week, before arriving, on his motorcycle, to pick up new books. He was a wallflower at a party, asking another actor on the outskirts of the gathering if she would show him pictures of her dog in costume.
My colleague Jessica Winter was involved in a well-known Keanu Story, though she didn’t know it at the time. In a minute-long viral video taken on a New York City subway car, in 2011, Reeves is seen getting up and offering his seat to a woman who is carrying a large bag. Winter happened to be sitting next to Reeves when the video was shot—she is the strawberry-blonde woman absorbed in reading a magazine, initially unaware of her famous fellow-passenger. Watching the clip today, Winter recalled the courtly way in which Reeves reacted to being filmed: “He was calm and beatific and ever so slightly puzzled, like, Why are you doing this? I am not upset, and perhaps it is not my business.” If only more of us could learn to adopt Reeves’s attitude in our own lives. It’s O.K. to take a pause sometimes, to not engage, to let the world separate from you a little bit, he assures us. Just watch me.
I have two Keanu Stories of my own, both brief but sweet. In 2006, at a performance by the dancer Pina Bausch, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, I saw Reeves seated a couple of rows away from me—in the cheap seats—his gangly legs crammed into the small space in front of him. Three years later, at Film Forum, I spotted him emerging alone from a Kurosawa movie, carrying a large tub of popcorn. These moments aren’t much, but I keep them close, picking them up every once in a while, the way you would a crystal or an amulet.

The Olsen Twin‘s Story
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The idea for these sims came from an instagram I follow which updates on what the reclusive Olsen’s are up to nowadays. They mostly huddle together smoking outside the offices for their fashion business, or huddle together and smoke outside expensive restaurants while their rich men wait inside. It seems a heavenly existence and I wanted to recreate it in the sims. I also wanted a story with sims who were NOT in the entertainment career path, although as backstory both these sims were models to explain their fashion experience/savings. Also personality/backstory-wise I based them mostly off their characters in New York Minute. That movie was filmed all over Toronto and Nueva Juarez (my sim city) is based a lot on Toronto so I watch that move a lot for inspiration while simming. Ashley is on the left, Mary-Kate is on the right.
Tumblr media
As children the only friends twin-sisters Ashley (left) and Mary-Kate (right) had were each other, they were home schooled by their wealthy parents and never socialized with kids their own age. As teenagers during a family outing to Nueva Juarez they were scouted by a modelling agency which introduced them to an entirely different world. Mary-Kate started to hang out with musicians and artists, Ashley befriended young professionals and future politicians. Their outlooks on life completely changed and so did their aspirations. Following the death of their parents due to influenza and their graduation from college, they left their hometown and retired from modelling to move to the big city and peruse new dreams.
Tumblr media
Although some in Nueva Juarez have trouble telling Mary-Kate from Ashley, the key difference is in their personal style. Mary-Kate's style is loose baggy layers and dark colours and Ashley likes prints and lighter colours and a neater, tailored fit.
Tumblr media
Their different but complimentary styles inspired them to start a boutique together. Mary-Kate had ideas for original designs and Ashley knew of an old textile factory for sale that needed renovation but was in a perfect retail location.
Tumblr media
The business would be split 50/50, Ashley would be in charge of sales and management and Mary-Kate would be head curator and designer.
Tumblr media
Together they opened The Row, a booming high-end fashion boutique in downtown Nueva Juarez. It's a combination of clothing they design and create themselves in house, and jewellery and fragrances they have curated for sale. Located just off the main street, the first floor is their retail store, the second is their work studio and the third is used for private events and fashion shows.
Tumblr media
Unexpectedly to everyone but the sisters themselves, The Row was a success from opening day. Profits poured in as income only had to be split between the two sisters (and a handyman/driver they hired). They also had no loans to pay off as the business was launched with their savings and inheritance. Business really took off when celebrities and public figures began proudly wearing The Row. Quickly they found themselves back in the entertainment world they thought they had left when they had retired from modelling.
Tumblr media
The twins tried to get time alone together as often as they could, but with their busy schedules and growing social circle that was becoming much less frequent.
Tumblr media
Ashley met Heath Huerta, a professional soccer player from out of town, on a group outing to The Hub and the pair instantly hit off.
Tumblr media
He was her date when she and Mary-Kate were invited to the premiere of the film Paradise at the Meneghel Theater.
Tumblr media
The three of them had drinks at the after-party and he received the very important approval of Mary-Kate.
Tumblr media
At the premiere Mary-Kate met and started spending a lot of time with Zack Bryan, a young up-and-coming actor who, like her, used to be a model. They bonded over their shared past as well as their enjoyment for the seamier side of Nueva Juarez, they much more enjoyed dining out at McDonalds or partying at Bella Noche's than The Hub or Meneghel Theatre.
Tumblr media
Maybe it was this appreciation for the simpler life that attracted Mary-Kate to Charlie Polniaczek, the ex-con handy-man the sisters had hired to help with some of the manual labour around The Row. Although they had little in common, and in fact she was closer in age to his daughter than she was to him, the connection was mutual.
Tumblr media
However, the closest bond the sisters had was with each other and that was proven when Ashley died one night after a coughing fit brought on by her chain-smoking. Mary-Kate pleaded with Death and even offered her own life to him instead, which impressed Death so much he agreed to let Ashley live this once. He warned them, however, that he would strike them again soon...
Tumblr media
Not intimidated, the twins were back to smoking again the next morning.
Tumblr media
Mary-Kate even took it a step further. Her friend Brian Stoner was old college roomies with Snoop Dog, and he tipped them off to an old rundown mansion in Nueva Juarez called Rosebush Manor. The house was a heavy underground party scene and Mary-Kate started spending a lot of time there.
Tumblr media
As He promised, Death caught up with the sisters. This time claiming the life of their best customers, Blair Warner, who spent more money at their store than anyone else. Business had already slowed down, so they would need a new approach to breathe life back in to The Row.
-To be continued...-
Future chapters will focus on the growth of their business, a new advertising campaign with Maho Yamaguchi, their romantic pursuits and a vacation.
