No More Dangerous Power Line Trees! 🌲⚡💨
After last week’s windstorm knocked a tree onto the power lines, I’m now cleaning up the aftermath! In this video from hand falling the rest, I’m tackling the stumps and tidying up the area around the power lines to prevent future issues.

Now we cut down all the trees on our blocks where climate change induced wind knocks down the power lines as “precaution.” Fam, the trees do lots of dope shit FOR us and we should leave healthy ones alone. You know what doesn’t have to be above ground? Power lines. We would have so much fewer power outages from climate change induced weather craziness. It’s even feasible with enough planning in areas with earthquakes. But just like the original utility companies didn’t give a shit about safety or blotting out the sky for poor people, power companies now never invest. Not just don’t invest in making things better, they’ve been allowed to be fully run by and for the kind of dipshit wealthy people who still own and run the American train industry. Rich idiots who think highly of themselves endangering millions while pretending they are helping with their avarice is a time honored tradition in America
Stupid is timeless.
#Power line safety#corporate evil#we can make things better#cause that’s humanity#but our systems are set up to demand either an insane amount of blood and pain from those trying to make things better or a miracle#or decades of slow change#like how power lines became less dystopian between their first decades and the 50’s

I think a key thing to remember when judging all those "Astarion/Minthara/Lae'zel disapproves" reactions to like... helping orphans is that in context they're often rather realistic and practical considering what's being asked of them. If anything it's the more good-aligned companions willingness to drop everything and risk their lives to help randos in need of help that is unreasonable to expect.
Remember, from their perspective things like save-scumming are not real. They cannot metagame and prepare for what specific enemy or attack they might face. In-universe, death has consequence and you can die. Plus we're on an unknown time limit here to potential squid-ifying, not to mention their own personal baggage.
It's like... they're playing blind and on Honour Mode, and the consequences of failure isn't just a story going the way you might not like or your fave character dying. It's actual life and death. There are real stakes here for them.
So while yes they can approve of just... petty asshole stuff or even genuinely evil stuff, it's not unreasonable for them to have a problem with risking their lives for random strangers. Because if they're in your party, that's what you're doing. Making the choice to put their lives on the line for strangers. If anything they're all oddly brave and ride-or-die for whatever bullshit decisions you make from the start--I mean it takes a lot of reckless altruism while also being an asshole to them specifically (it's not hard to balance their approval by being nice to them directly on a good playthrough) to get them to hate you, let alone ditch the group.
#bg3#I feel like as players we get blinded by all our player knowledge and how the stakes feel to US#that we forget to look at how they impact the characters in-universe#like my previous post on how the Emperor has very sympathetic and understandable reasons for manipulating you#and is even quite restrained and fair considering what the stakes are for it#like with how the math actually plays out. Astarion will grumblingly put his life on the line for whatever side quests you want to go on#and will still come to like and trust you so long as personally you're supportive of him and his bodily autonomy#and even the more power-hungry evil stuff... Minthara and Astarion usually approve of such for very practical (if ruthless)#reasons because for them power = safety#Minthara is actually very chill and trusting of your judgment considering how she lived prior to joining us on our quest#to help every kitten stuck in a tree#and Lae'zel is actually very compassionate. it just presents very aggressively and selectively#and like obviously as adventurers now risking their lives is kinda par for the course#but I still can't judge them entirely for disliking being volunteered out for charity work with no guaranteed reward#and a very real chance of death

That scene in Ted Lasso where Isaac instructs everyone to delete any intimate photos or videos of anyone they are not currently seeing could honestly air on tv as an ad campaign
#ted lasso#sprinkle other stuff like how you should never show them to friends/other people#or a nice reminder that posting other people's n*des without their permission is illegal#also a line somewhere about how victim blaming is wrong#and you get a powerful and perfect campaign about internet safety#isaac mcadoo#ted lasso spoilers#ted lasso season 3#ted lasso season 3 spoilers#nym's posts

the most annoying thing about me is that im a huge epsilon apologist. im like "hes just being fucked up and evil in paris is melting and the unblinking eye bc he has a headache ok"
#ITS DEEPER THAN THAT BUT LIKE#i dont think his relationship to francis is healthy but i think he is francis's favorite person#and i think francis is his favorite person too#and when he scolds francis its more out of concern for his safety than it is being upset that he cant control him#and i think their people have abused them their entire lives and theyre both really messed up over it#and i dont think epsilon has all that much power over his people. like hes the leader but in a way where if he steps out of line#he'll also get punished#i think. eppylon. ok?

I just saw a construction sign with a little stylized sillhouette holding up a stop sign, and the words "Prepare to stop."
That sign would be infinitely improved by the addition of a little Gandalf hat.
#lotr#you shall not pass#okay maybe you shall but don't bet on it#not right away anyways#you shall wait your turn while the tree-trimming crew has this lane blocked#for the sake of power line safety#fantasy OSHA

The fact that I like blind, unwavering devotion as a story drive, a ship dynamic and a trope in itself that much probably tells things about me a therapist should figure out.
#hel is talking#I mean guys#a character so devoted to their friend/family/partner/whatever at some point the lines blur#a character so devoted the other becomes their sole drive forward#when you do unspeakable things for their safety#when you only feel safe when they are happy#when your own wellbeing is nothing in front of their happiness#when your trust in them is both an absolute drive forward and a protection against the horrors of the world#is there anything more powerful than the sentence “I give my life to you”?#............. yeah I should see a therapist.

Okay the “fun” of a power outage has lost its luster..
#not dogs#not supposed to have power until 10pm tomorrow#and don’t tell me to get a generator#my house is old and we’ve never had the means to had the proper installation capable of running one yet#and there was a wood stove but my father in law didn’t use it ever so the chimney hasn’t been used in 20+ years#so again. expensive#‘your dogs must be warm’#snow doesn’t melt on them so they are cold to the touch lol#they are having the best time however the house is finally their preferred temperature#they are also being pains in the ass#finally got a decent walk in them today but it made me leery bc we were weaving to different#sides of the road to avoid downed lines#and Sigurd was just. not having being asked to do different than normal#power outages do make me feel very resilient tho bc we have them frequently and it’s like it’s fine#did wish we had cell service from a safety standpoint but…rural life

every time I talk about historical context with potc I need to put a disclaimer, but there’s something very haunting about the way Elizabeth’s, Will’s, and James’ personal journeys all coincide with the piracy act (which granted colonial governors the authority to hang pirates on site instead of sending them back to England). how many pirates must have made the Atlantic crossing in the opposite direction before them. how it’s not ultimately law and Englishness and Moral Righteousness that destroys the pirates, but commerce.
#I’d argue that even by cotbp the crusade has mostly succeeded#port royal — once pirate haven and den of sin — is made lawful and obedient to the crown. Mostly#sure they have tortuga and shipwreck cove but those are the last safe places for pirates to be#(at least in the Caribbean. But even Sao Feng’s fall shows how easily those places can topple. )#but the system is too weak and humanizes its opponents to grant them clemency & mercy#(staples of a war between two recognized ‘‘human’ powers)#it has to be beckett and the company because commerce doesn’t recognize good/evil or even mercy/ruthlessness#there’s only profit and what stands in the way of it#(foreshadowing - I think - British colonization of India; things like the opium wars; etc)#ooc. ( ࿐ྂ ) lesjibbities dangereuses.#edit. and ALSO! How Elizabeth living at a distance in England allows her to mythologize jack and other pirates.#but when she’s put in proximity she sees the truth.#moreover: she sees the port he sacked. The civilians they terrorize. it’s not a distant exotic violence beyond the line but real#her friends’ safety. her safety.#and I don’t think that reality setting in ever really leaves her even after she’s gone pirate herself.

karlach's thought about gortash is so.. bizarrely sweet actually.
she's still getting a bit of revenge against him, but it's not the simple "he needs to suffer and die," not how she is against zariel. no, that's not enough. even at this point she knows that doesn't fix anything and it's not what she truly wants, regardless of what he deserves.
she has him on his hands and knees for eternity, working to make a terrible part of the world just a little bit nicer. a little bit prettier.
she forces him to bring softness and beauty to a world filled with pain.
like i'm sorry WHAT???? karlach i fucking love you so much
(side note: gale saying "a mythal in my own right"... from my quick search, a mythal is a field of magical effect that's so powerful, it changes the rules of physics and reality. even at this point, what mystra is to the weave, he wants to be to the netherese magic in him.
he doesn't want to be a man, he wants to be a world-bending force of nature. he wants power to the point of dehumanization. to the point, really, of objectification.)
Companions' Wishes

Karlach:
Astarion:
Lae'zel:
I just thought these were cool insights on the characters.
(Haven't checked if Lae'zel's options change if she visits the Creche first, but it is too late for that )
Edit: If you are wondering where this is, you should investigate the basement of the apothecary in the Blighted Village.
#gale has gender envy for storms and natural disasters#i was gonna keep it to the tags but no i'm a little bit obsessed about this#all of these lines are so good and show so much insight into what they want and value#wyll: forgiveness and love. revenge and overcoming. adoration and fame. shadowheart: family. power and glory. revenge.#gale: love and safety. power. reverence and one-upping. karlach: family and return of childhood innocence. life and health. revenge.#astarion: home. power and safety. revenge. lae'zel: glory and title. purity and health.#damn a lot of them want some form of revenge or one-upping rivals/enemies huh#bg3#meta#wyll ravengard#shadowheart#gale dekarios#karlach cliffgate#astarion ancunin#lae'zel

this post is fearmongering. the results of this study are concerning and should definitely be a matter of public discussion, but this is certainly not the conclusion the researchers came to.
the point of the study was to assess the risks of exposure to toxic metals- something one of the co-authors notes are “ubiquitous” fwiw- via menstrual products. Their research confirmed that these metals are indeed present in tampons, but no further conclusions are drawn. it is possible the metal entered into the cotton from the soil, which is a well-known phenomenon; cotton is so good at lifting heavy metals that it has actually been suggested as a part of the solution for revitalizing polluted ground.
the authors conclude with an acknowledgement that the study should be repeated- their sample size was 60 tampons- and a suggestion that further testing ought to be done to indicate whether or not these metals can even leech out of the tampon in the first place, let alone whether or not such leeching could occur at levels deleterious to human health.
there is, in fact, a body of research- too small, for sure, but much larger than this single study- indicating that long-term proper tampon use has no observable negative impact on health. i am grateful and thrilled that more research is being done and i hope that this study is the first of many on this line of questioning, but i am really frustrated at this post and the response it got.
obviously, if this study alters your approach to menstrual health, more power to you. consumers should be informed-risk-takers, and menstrual health is double-obviously a very personal choice. but it definitely wasn't the researchers concluding that you ought to “avoid using tampons at all cost," only this tumblr user did. the lead author of the paper, in fact, specifically says that she hopes people do NOT panic about the results.
(the notes of the post were disappointing. people affirming that they knew they were right to be suspicious of tampons all along, or even recommending alternatives that actually have very little to no research regarding the safety of long-term use, etc. it’s a different conversation, but categorical distrust of tampons is old-school misogyny. you certainly shouldn't wear them if you don’t want to, but there is nothing inherently scary or wrong about them, and people who prefer them are not being reckless or crass.)
((if you're really worried about exposure to heavy metals, you may want to turn a critical eye to fast fashion, as an aside))
#couldn’t reply to the original#so. sorry for the screenshot lol. but i can't put my two cents there. and this topic bugs me (grew up in anti-tampon country)#(Utah)#i do not blindly believe that tampon brands are looking out for us or anything. i hope that comes across here.#anyway. it's something to keep an eye out for more research. i hope this team is able to continue their work

this is just what america Is Like. no regard for the fact that pedestrians have just as much right to public spaces as drivers. it's built into the city design and traffic laws.
i love crossing the street in front of cars where i can see the driver is visibly annoyed because like. are you mad at me? am i making you mad? are you upset? are you gonna kill me about it? gonna vehicular manslaughter me? gonna split my head open like a watermelon with that big strong manly truck? are you mad at me?
#like im sitting in my nice comfy car that will more than make up for the time I spent waiting for pedestrians#please go ahead#being a pedestrian should not be stressful#yet america goes out of its way to make that the case#bree speaks#i like to stop for bikes coming up to the signaled bike path before theyve had the chance to press the button#cause like the effort to getting a bike moving is much more than the effort of pushing a gas pedal#but i dont always see them coming and i feel bad#likewise id rather sit in my car a minute or two longer than be the reason a pedestrian has to stand under a signal waiting for it to chang#or go out of their way to walk to the next crosswalk#or feel distressed in any way#america brain#my destination and safety is not any more important than theirs just because I could kill them if i was careless enough#and I hope that drivers would have the same respect for me as a biker or pedestrian#so yeah no I dont feel bad interrupting someone's drive because I've done my part#yes my safety is my responsibility#but as a driver with great power you must also accept the great responsibility of not being a danger to others#intentionally or unintentionally#my life is on the line but so is your freedom#social contract and all that#anyways#i think the problem is Americans have very little experience as pedestrians#and the experiences they do have are colored by their far greater multitude of experiences in a car#so combined with driving being the onlu legitimate way to exercise any kind of freedom of movement in most of the US#driving feels more like a right than the privilege it truly is and should be#compared to walking
