An Evil Game / A Date With Danger

So I was rewatching Power Rangers in Space for like the fiftieth time because I was diagnosed on Fark.com with 'weapons-grade autism' and I am very proud of this (also, I need to make a hat).

And I noticed something.

During Karone's arc, when she discovers who she is, we aren't supposed to be cheering for TJ and the Space Rangers.

At the point she goes onto the Megaship, it is very clearly established that she is 1) brainwashed 2) constantly being threatened with death and 3) being abused by Dark Spectre. We know this. Andros knows this. And Andros has told the others, repeatedly.

This is the point where the Power Rangers are supposed to save her from Dark Spectre. We've seen this in other cases of Rangers getting turned--usually Tommy, but Kat also got saved, because that's what Power Rangers are supposed to do.

Instead Karone thinks she needs to bargain her way to safety with Zordon's location, and she's right. Andros tries to stand up for her, but TJ and the others override him almost instantly.

We aren't supposed to agree with that. That's why TJ apologizes later. That's why the Rangers get so close to dying when they ignore Karone's plan and don't ask her for help.

So let's just take a minute to remember: A kid's show in 1998 expected people to use critical thinking, even about superheroes.

Because holy shit, I love this show so much now.

My hot take for today:

I was introduced to Power Rangers with Ninja Storm. I became a fan with Dino Thunder. Mighty Morphin was the one that all my cousins could talk about with each other. In Space and Lost Galaxy were the ones I was super fond of when I was at the height of my Power Rangers fanboying. I used to play Lightspeed Rescue on the N64 all the time.

All that being said…even though all the shows are fun and watchable…I gotta crown Time Force as the best Power Rangers series. Best Pink Ranger, best Pink/Red couple, best storyline, best villain, best team concept. It’s got it all. Even the legend himself Jason David Frank (RIP) agreed that it was the best Power Rangers season.

(My one minor gripe is that Jen and Wes really should’ve kissed at the end. Instead they just hug because…kids show, I guess. It just feels awkward, especially after a confession of love lol)

Any headcanons for Andros?

Headcanons: Andros

-Humans on KO-435 have a few traits that Earthly humans don’t have. For instance, every human there has semi-bioluminescence within the follicles of their strands. In some cases it causes their hair to create frosted tips and highlight or to fully dye certain pieces of hair and stays as such even when they age, explains why Andros had his hairstyle along with Zhane having silver in his own hair. This is a bit of a reference to how Saiyans in Dragon Ball retain their hairstyle even up until the end of their lifespans.

-Andros has pursued a few acting gigs but mainly in horror due to his telekinesis. It allows for him to really have fun with certain scenes like possession or optical illusions.

-Andros’s hair used to be longer as he would allow for his former team to braid it, it actually gave off a rainbow spectrum glow due to the grid powers unifying from their synergy with him but after they were killed and when Zhane was placed into a coma he decided to cut it shorter. Nowadays he’s trying to get back into habit since Zhane is back and Karone is around but it’s still a little hard.

-He kinda gets hate from people for killing Zordon, despite the reasoning and being allowed to do it. During Forever Red Karone was on ship and had to threaten a few reds who were getting a little to close to Andros during an argument.

-The reason his power saber is drill themed is due to Andros’s motivation, he wanted to stop at nothing to get Karone back. A drill itself breaks through material without hesitation, even if it causes trouble for the things round them, could also associate this with his powers as he can focus his telekinesis into a single point to make black holes and energy, destructive but gets the job done when he wants to protect the things he loves.

-Andros loves breakcore and upbeat tempo music since it reminds him of flying through space, when Pinkpantheress came out he bought out all her albums.

-He hates split ends and will hold a person down until he fixes their hair.

General Ranger Headcanons

Ranger Teams are protective of their youngest members and their Reds. Sometimes, this does coincide, but for the most part, the youngest and the Red are separate people

Red Rangers generally have zero self-preservation instincts, either because of trauma or daredevil personalities

Blue Rangers can be the 'tech wiz', but generally, they're just extremely intelligent

Rangers all have a pretty solid relationship with gender and pronouns. Mostly because they see and fight aliens literally every day and have decided they have Bigger Things to worry about

Reds, Yellows, and Blues are usually always there on the Ranger teams, so it's common for them to be close

Rangers have a list that they pass down to the younger teams. This list details little things like how to help give each other strength to what pain medications can help the aches and pains go away fastest, because yes the suits take most of the blows, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt later

Some Rangers have PTSD, some have anxiety, some have depression. There are, in fact, numbers of former-Ranger therapists that the Rangers all know by heart

Teams don't really drift apart, they stick together because who else is gonna understand what it's like to witness the people you hang around daily almost die every other week?

Rangers drift toward other Rangers. It's due to the Morphin' Grid power they've been imbued with and the Morphin' Grid's pull to itself

There's a point in every Ranger's fight that shift-sleeping becomes the norm amongst teams. It's to stop nightmares, but also because of the paranoia that strikes when you're in fight or flight mode too long

Rangers from space or space-adjacent stick together

Rangers in general stick together, always. Where one Ranger is, another is typically not far behind. Some teams go so far as to get houses together, others just in the same neighborhood or town. Never far from each other, and never away for too long

The Power will never, can never abandon its chosen people. Once it makes its choices, it will not deviate. It doesn't stop looking out for its chosen ones either. Once you've bonded to the Morphin' Grid, you're stuck for life, regardless of being active or not

In Universe, people write fanfiction about the Rangers. Yes, they read it, sometimes they even like it. (Megaforce and down in particular find it hilarious)

The scone the Rangers find out about their Super Sentai counterpart shows, it's on. Some find them hilarious, some find them uncomfortable, but it's all in good fun for all of them

A list of common triggers is passed around to the Ranger teams, including but not limited to: loud noises, bugs, fog, robotic voices/static

Some of the Rangers (especially those who've been fighting for years) get therapy animals

Rangers have problems connecting to people who aren't Rangers or don't know about Rangers. Similar to military or police or doctors, Rangers are never truly off unless they're inactive and even then, it's a roll of the dice as to if they'll be pulled back in. Most of them have been doing this since they were teens, so they never truly got a chance. Preston Tien, Ninja Steel Blue, once described the experience as "playing with a half-deck whilst the other decks are rigged against you" and most of the other Rangers agreed

Every Ranger knows the pain of Nightmares, which is a big part of the reason shift-sleeping became so common amongst teams. Sleeping disorders are also common, which is not easy for the Rangers to deal with. When you're trained from a young age to be fighters and saviors of the planet, you don't walk away without trauma

Rangers who've gone Evil (or started Evil) and come back to the side of Good have each other's direct lines, Tommy Oliver, Karone, Trent Fernandez-Mercer, etc, all of them share a similar fear of suddenly turning evil again

Rangers do not like Zordon for his express need to put teenagers into a war that isn't even their's
