I can't find the big post i made about it a couple years ago but now that it's heating up again in the Northern Hemisphere, I just want every disabled, chronically ill, elderly, or medicated person to know that if your city/state sends out an alert telling people to raise their air conditioning temp or stop using it all together in order to ease the power grid in order to help the vulnerable: ignore it. You ARE the vulnerable in question. Don't die from the heat stroke you're at an increased risk for.
For those cooling down in the Southern Hemisphere, the same applies to what temp you set your heater to. Ignore it.

the rumblings about the Batman 2 setting reminded me of how cool a snowed-in Gotham would be for a fic or movie setting. power/electricity grid is either out or about to fail. people are trapped in their homes and apartments by ten and fifteen foot drifts, with more snow inbound. the city breaks down within hours, as people abandon their jobs (cough, Arkham) and try to escape the city.
The Bat enters a new version of a familiar playground, an iced over city where cars can’t drive, grapple lines don’t catch, and frostbite sets in within minutes of exposing skin. How do you protect your city? The vulnerable freezing to death? How do you connect aid stations and Good Samaritans to the people who need help when Gotham’s criminal underbelly has decided now is the time to fight back?

I know so many people who are certain the world is about to end. They’ve felt this way since about 2016 or so. They are neurotic and unempowered, refreshing their Twitter feeds and making posts begging others to stay worried and go vote.
Some of them are leftists, and say they wish to see an end to capitalism, perhaps even to America — but when the possibility starts actually feeling real to them, they fear crime, and chaos, and their own helplessness. They joke uneasily that we live in “The Bad Place” but they are too afraid to get to the good one. They don’t want to see an end to their quiet street corner, their cozy condominium, their favorite television shows on streaming, their door with a lock. They admit this world is hell but they try to claim their own corner of it and keep it comfortable.
I’ve been in the exact mental spot as these people, so I don’t mean to make myself sound superior. For the longest time, all I wanted to do was find a few comforting distractions to get me through the years before my death. I went to bed with my stomach in knots, certain that one day the power grid would go dark, the water would stop flowing, and the fascists would march in the streets and no one would stop them.
Back then I didn’t fantasize that I would do anything to stop them. I picture things differently now.
I used to think that voting and calling representatives were my only avenues for political participation, but now I see that with every choice I am not merely voting for a better world, I am creating it. When I fund a friend’s jaw surgery, when I look an unhoused person in the eyes and ask them how they are doing, when I slow my walking speed, when I share my knowledge, I am making decisions about how the future will be. I am not powerless. I am small, and vulnerable, but I always have something to give.
I think that when we are feeling powerless and afraid of the collapse, it’s helpful to shift our attention toward practical, empowering questions like these:
If the government collapsed today, what would I do tomorrow?
The End of the World is a big, frightening abstraction. But if some terrible disaster (or glorious revolution) were to happen today, all I’d have to do tomorrow is make a few basic decisions. What would I eat? Where would I sleep? Who would I contact first?
At the end of the world there are still dirty clothes and rumbling bellies. Those pressing physical needs are the most immediate questions we will need to answer, not larger philosophical quandaries about what life is “for,” or what the ideal new political system should be. For those more essential questions, there will always be answers: canned food to gather, lakes to wash off in, stories to be traded across candlelight.
The future that we expect is just a fiction we tell ourselves, and it has never been guaranteed. And so, when some dramatic change comes, we can focus not on the loss of certainty, but on the practicalities: finding shelter, getting fed, and keeping the people around us as safe as we can. This is already what life is about — and we’re all more practiced in survival than we might think.
If the world as I know it ended, what would still be important to me?
Hitting my weekly wordcount goals wouldn’t matter at all anymore, I know that much. But in the wake of a terrible collapse I would still value my friends, my immediate family, my chinchilla, and the people I see every day. I wouldn’t be so fixated on never seeming ‘awkward’ or ‘creepy’; the moment disaster happened, I would just get over myself and knock on my neighbors’ doors.
If the world ended, I’d stop caring about my appearance, but I’d still long for a mode of self-expression like fashion currently provides. I wouldn’t think of my writing “career,” but I’d still want to be heard. I can imagine myself giving a small speech to my neighbors, trying to persuade them to take whatever course of action I thought best. I would be wrong often and not always persuasive, but I would still get to express myself and witness how that expression influences the world. I’d take care of more animals. I’d worry less about my apartment getting banged up and wrecked.
It’s worthwhile to contemplate the people we will become after capitalism. The rhythms of our lives will change, as will our priorities. We may harbor fears about all that may be lost, but it’s worth asking whether our possessions and favorite TV shows and Twitch streamers are really all that important. I often find myself looking forward to the person I could become in this new reality. And those thoughts often motivate me to make small changes in who I am and what I prioritize right now.
The full essay also contemplates these questions about the apocalypse:
What would I feel unburdened from?
What important work would I keep doing?
What skills do I have that people will always need?
What help would I ask for?
You can read the full piece for free, or have it narrated to you in the Substack app, right here.

This is the Red Alert You Can’t Ignore: Iran’s Military on U.S. Soil, Deep State Chaos, and the Elite’s Plot to Destroy America from Within!
The moment of truth is here. The battle for America’s soul is no longer in the shadows. The Deep State is waging war on our own soil, and the global elite are covering it up. Foreign forces are already inside our borders, preparing to strike.
We are on the brink of civil war. This isn't a drill. The Deep State, desperate to save their crumbling empire, has unleashed foreign troops to sow chaos. Enemy soldiers have infiltrated our country. Their targets: our key states, our critical infrastructure, and YOU.
Foreign Forces in Our Cities – Military Operations Escalate
The military is actively engaging on U.S. soil, but it’s not just our forces. Foreign soldiers are here, right now, waiting to tear America apart from the inside. California, Texas, Florida—they’ve been infiltrated by globalist-backed mercenaries disguised as South American gangs. These aren’t street criminals; they’re soldiers in the Deep State’s war against the American people.
Iranian troops have been sighted in the western U.S.—yes, actual Iranian military units, placed here by the Deep State to bring America to its knees when the time comes. The elites have sold us out—politicians and globalist operatives are working with these foreign forces to trigger America’s collapse.
Infrastructure is the target. Power grids, water supplies, and transportation hubs are all vulnerable, and the plan is clear: shut America down from within. When the lights go out, panic will explode, and the chaos will only grow. This is how they intend to bring America to its knees—through engineered collapse, martial law, and total domination.
The Deep State’s Master Plan: Civil War and Chaos
This plot has been years in the making. Every crisis, every election, every war was designed to bring us to this breaking point. But now, the Deep State is pulling the trigger on their final operation: a staged civil war. The military buildup in states like Texas, Florida, and California is not just for civil unrest; it’s a preparation for war against domestic and foreign enemies working for the Deep State.
Their endgame? Unleash chaos, call in foreign troops to “restore order,” and seize control. This is about more than power—it’s about absolute domination. They want you to own nothing, control nothing, and obey everything.
The Satanic Cabal: The Elite Families Want You Dead
Behind this operation are satanic monsters—the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, and their elite cronies who have been profiting from war, famine, and suffering for generations. These aren’t just businessmen. They are child traffickers, blood-drinkers, and war profiteers. The exposure of their networks is happening NOW.
Child trafficking, satanic rituals, organ harvesting—all of it is coming to light. The military is poised to blow their operations wide open, and they know their time is up.
The Quantum Financial System (QFS): Their Greatest Fear
The elite’s worst nightmare is the Global Currency Reset (GCR) and Quantum Financial System (QFS). Once it’s activated, the entire corrupt financial structure they’ve built crumbles. This is why they’re desperate to cause chaos and civil war. They need to stop the QFS from liberating humanity from their debt slavery system.
The storm is coming. The Deep State is moving fast, but we are faster. Prepare now. Stock up, stay alert, and get ready for the fight of your life.
I have been seeing this 👆 more and more...
The Storm Is Approaching 🤔

Drawing The 2X025 grid. Alpine (3/10)
The gods rarely present themselves in their full, unbridled forms. Many choose to don shapes that mortals find comforting, forms that make their immense power seem less daunting. But Alpine is different. Alpine does not cater to mortal sensibilities or seek to ease their fears. It stands apart, raw and unfiltered, a force that demands reverence without the veil of pleasantries.
In its true form, Alpine resembles a human nervous system—intricate, complex, and alive with an otherworldly energy. This form serves as a fusion of divine and mortal. When a hunter accepts Alpine’s blessing, their own nervous system is entwined with this celestial network, creating a singular, powerful system. Together, they are stronger, faster, more resilient.
Alpine offers protection like no other, shielding its hunters from the fatal strikes of beasts, activating barriers that guard their most vulnerable points. But it is not merely a shield. In the hands of the right hunter, one who understands its depths and dares to push its limits, Alpine becomes a perfect balance of offense and defense—a weapon as much as it is armor.
Yet, such mastery is rare. Only one hunter has ever truly harmonized with Alpine, unlocking its full potential, becoming an indomitable force on the battlefield.
For now, Alpine functions as it should. As long as there are no fights, it rests, vigilant. Anticipating where it will once again prove its worth.
Hello !!! Life has been kicking my ass recently, assignments there and there and its killing me and my back and arms. But I really wanted to shoz you guys that I got myself a Tablet !!! drew Pierre and Jack on Clip Studio while the weapons were drawn on ibis paint. hope you guys will like this !!!

Darkheart x reader!
H E L L O, F E L L A S ! ! ! ! ! ! !
*ahem*
I'm back to write! My exam just ended 2h ago, and I'm doing alright! To whoever requested this, I'm so sorry you had to wait so long ;-; I had stuff to do and I had to rush this because I may not be posting for another month or so otherwise ;-;
but yea, enjoy the story! :D
-
Crossroads. Known for being the lively town which joined all four factions together...and the only thing stopping them from engaging in war.
Blackrock, Playground, Lost Temple and Thieves' Den.
For generations, Blackrock had considered themselves sworn enemies with Playground, and the phighters of Playground thought likewise, so the sight of demons from each faction leaving the other alone instead of going at each other's throats in Crossroads was a treat for everyone.
It also just so happened to be the only place where people of different factions could meet up and relax after a long day of phights.
Someone from Lost Temple could chat with someone from Playgrounds without any conflicts happening on either side.
Someone from Thieves' Den could walk into a bar with someone from Blackrock, and that would be perfectly fine on all sides.
However, Crossroads wasn’t just the number one hangout place for phighters- it was one for the SFOTH deities, too. Especially during their days off.
And sometimes, they just so happened to be in the places no one would expect them to be.
Of course, Firebrand was standing in the centre of it all, boasting to demons about his great power and how he ruled over the entirety of Crossroads.
Other deities hid elsewhere. They watched over Crossroads from the shadows, save for Windforce who went to Banlands to find her son.
They all had a favourite place to watch Crossroads from. Illumina enjoyed standing at the edge of the Crossroads tower, watching demons move around like ants on a grid.
Some of the deities’ favourite spots were slightly unusual, however…
…such as underneath a bridge.
“Freaking finally…”
The weekend was here. You, a phighter, made a living by duelling other demons in “phights”. They were regularly hosted by Dom and Valk, the two famous idols known as Flipside.
They were born with a silver spoon in their mouth, and you were participating in these phights to maybe, just maybe, make enough from them to ensure you get to live well for the rest of your life.
You knew you already could, however- because of your lover.
He had everything. Strength, affluence, hell, he was also well-known around the Inpherno.
He had offered you everything you could ever wish for. He just wanted you to be there with him until the end of time.
You refused, however- how could you let your loving boyfriend do all the work?
So, you still worked by phighting- you enjoyed the job, anyway. Your boyfriend would even visit sometimes. Just, well- to annoy the hell out of others.
"A little bit of chaos is fun...don't you think?"
You internally cheered at the sight, but everyone else groaned. Even Biograft, despite it being a robot, seemed to tense up, gripping its energy blades harder...
To you, it was a blessing.
To other players, it was a curse...literally.
“Feeling vulnerable…?”
Just then, the enemy Biograft seemed to falter, its lights dimming. Seemed like he got the curse…
“WHAT THE HELL? AM I NOT VULNERABLE ENOUGH ALREADY?”
Those were his last words before getting obliterated by your ally, Hyperlaser…
Your ally, Shuriken, was chasing down Sword, who was on 15 HP.
“We’re feeling a gust of wind come along…!”
The next thing he knew, Shuriken got blasted upwards…and out of the map.
Of course, Darkheart would make sure that you were out of harm's way before casting another one of his curses. Though, he wasn’t as merciful with your teammates…
So here you sat, after a long day and a hard battle, snuggled up in your boyfriend’s arms.
"Darkheart...I'm exhausted..."
"No need to worry, dear...we'll be here..."
You never really understood why your boyfriend always referred to himself plurally, but it was just another one of his quirks that you adored about him. You loved him, and he loved you back.
His one withered wing wrapped itself around your frame- his own special way of hugging you. Another one of his little habits.
"We just don't want Illumina to get to you, you know...? We're trying not to be too overprotective...who knows what he'd do to you?"
You giggled. Typical Darkheart- always protective of you, fearing for your wellbeing...sparing you from the usual curses he'd inflict on the others- hell, Darkheart would even curse other people if they got too close to his beloved.
As you fell asleep in your boyfriend's arms, you couldn't help but let out a small smile. Seeing your happy expression, Darkheart let out a small chuckle.
"Sleep well, my dearest..."
This was your life. Yourself, with Darkheart by your side. Sure, there were little disputes or disagreements in your relationship, and sometimes people would laugh at you because Darkheart was so much taller than you. But despite all this...
...you couldn't ask for more.
- thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed! this is my second (I think lmao) romance fic, so if you have any feedback do leave it in the comments so I can improve my writing for you guys! :D

“Women can get lots of other care on the spot — from sick visits and basic health screenings to Pap smears and contraception. [… They also come for] "The makeup, the snacking and the girl talks. And ... picking out a new outfit," said Pinky Valentine [“a homeless transgender woman”].”
9. ‘It absolutely took off’: five UK biodiversity success stories
Tumblr media
“[…N]ew methods are emerging to preserve, improve and generate new habitat and, in many cases, attract back or reintroduce species not seen for decades. After a nudge, ecosystems are often doing much of the heavy work themselves.“
10. Personalized gifts really do mean that little bit more to your loved ones, says research
Tumblr media
“Research has also shown that receivers of personalized gifts are more likely to take care of them. […] In this sense, gift-giving can be not just an emotional exchange, but also a more sustainable one. A carefully preserved [personalised] gift avoids waste and brings long-term satisfaction.”

Which Primarch likes and dislikes getting pegged the most
My headcanon is that most of them don't like it purely because the lack of control and dominance isn't something they enjoy. It's literally bred into them to conquer. That doesn't mean some couldn't be convinced though ;3
Guilliman first and foremost.
Lorgar could be convinced but he's going to have an emotional breakdown the next day and you will have to calm him down.
Sanguinius likes it and loves to switch it up a bit. He can be a bit of a pillow princess but he deserves the break, and plus he loves his wings being grabbed on too.
Vulkan because he loves you and he wants to make you happy and hey, sex with you is fun.
Fulgrim could be convinced, but it's a 50/50 shot between power bottom Fulgrim and drooling incoherent Fulgrim cause you pushed his buttons just right.
Perturabo is a no. Don't even try it. Konrad? LMAO. Lion would rather grid his face into pavement. Dorn is too much of a hardass to allow that sort of vulnerability.

"Hezbollah could make Israel uninhabitable in 72 hours..."
Shaul Goldstein, CEO of Israel's National Electrical System Management Company (NOGA), warned that Israelis are unprepared for war, stating the power grid could collapse within hours of conflict.
Speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies conference in Sderot, he said, "After 72 hours without electricity, living in Israel will be impossible." Goldstein highlighted the entity's vulnerability, noting that Hezbollah could easily disable the power grid, causing a rapid breakdown of infrastructure, communication, and fuel supply if a full-scale war were to be waged against the Lebanese resistance group.

When it comes to global energy policy, few narratives are as instructive — and as cautionary — as Europe’s.
Why?
Their ill-fated experiment with wind and solar energy.
The continent’s self-inflicted woes contain lessons that should be taken to heart by those formulating U.S. energy strategy for the incoming administration.
Europe’s Misplaced Trust in Wind and Solar
Europe’s embrace of weather-dependent power generation, particularly in Germany and the United Kingdom, was a profound miscalculation.
These nations embarked on an ambitious energy transformation, predicated on the assumption that wind and solar could replace traditional fossil fuels. The result has been a catastrophe, as predicted by many.
Germany, often celebrated as the champion of “renewable” energy, should be crowned king of incompetence.
The country’s heavy investment in wind and solar has not only failed to deliver promised reductions of carbon dioxide emissions — the bogeyman of climate alarmists — but also has destabilized its once robust industrial economy.
Germany’s manufacturing sector — historically, the economic powerhouse of Europe — has been brought to its knees, with energy costs rendering many industrial processes economically unviable.
Reporting on prices in the second week of December, Robert Bryce says that “Germany’s wholesale power market came close to $1,000 per megawatt-hour, the highest level in 18 years.”
The fundamental problem lies in the inherent unpredictability of renewable sources.
Wind power demonstrates acute vulnerabilities during critical periods.
Winter presents a perfect storm of challenges: Reduced wind generation coincides with peak energy demand, creating grid instability, and heightened risk of blackouts.

Reminder for disabled and sick folks, or anyone with a disabled or sick or elderly person in your home, as seasons change whether it's getting hotter or colder for you:
If your power grid is being overtaxed by too many people in your community using their air conditioners or heat, and your leaders tell you something like it's "your civic duty" to lower your AC to an unbearable and dangerous level for you (or to reduce your heat use to unbearable and dangerous levels for you), ignore them.
That's right, I said ignore your civic duty. Let the ableds who can tolerate too hot or too cold with just mild discomfort take on the burden of society for once. You may feel guilt, but you're not saving the world by courting heat stroke or freezing to death because you're more vulnerable to either.
Eco fash and eugenecists will be blocked on sight

Today, let's delve into the essential practice of shielding—a powerful technique in witchcraft for protecting your energy, maintaining spiritual boundaries, and warding off negative influences. Whether you're new to witchcraft or seeking to deepen your energetic practices, mastering the art of shielding can enhance your magical journey. Join me as we explore the significance, methods, and practical applications of shielding in your spiritual practice.
Understanding Shielding in Witchcraft
Shielding is a technique used to create and maintain a protective barrier around oneself or a specific space. This energetic barrier acts as a shield against unwanted energies, psychic intrusions, and external influences that may drain or harm your energy field. Shielding not only safeguards your personal energy but also fosters a sense of security, clarity, and empowerment in your magical work.
Significance of Shielding
Energy Protection: Shielding creates a barrier that filters and repels negative or intrusive energies, allowing you to maintain a balanced and harmonious energy field.
Spiritual Boundaries: Establishing shields helps define and maintain boundaries between your energy and external influences, promoting a sense of autonomy and spiritual sovereignty.
Empowerment: Shielding enhances your ability to navigate energetic environments, interact with others, and engage in magical practices with confidence and clarity.
Methods of Shielding
Visualization Techniques:
Bubble of Light: Visualize surrounding yourself with a bubble or sphere of protective light. Imagine this light as a barrier that filters out negativity while allowing positive energies to flow freely.
Aura Strengthening:
Aura Awareness: Focus on strengthening your aura—the energy field surrounding your body—by visualizing it expanding and becoming more vibrant and resilient.
Elemental Shields:
Elemental Associations: Invoke elemental energies (earth, air, fire, water, and spirit) to create shields tailored to specific needs. For example, earth shields for grounding and stability, fire shields for courage and protection, and water shields for emotional cleansing and flow.
Crystal Shields:
Crystal Allies: Use crystals such as black tourmaline, amethyst, or obsidian to reinforce your shields. Carry or wear crystals or create grids around your space to amplify protective energies.
Sigils and Symbols:
Energetic Seals: Create sigils or symbols that represent protection and empowerment. Charge these symbols with your intention and visualize them as shields that surround and safeguard you.
Mental Focus:
Mindfulness: Maintain mindfulness and focus on your intention to shield yourself. Cultivate awareness of your energy field and any shifts or intrusions.
Practical Applications of Shielding
Daily Protection: Shield yourself at the beginning of each day to maintain energetic balance and resilience.
Social Interactions: Use shielding techniques before entering crowded or energetically charged environments to shield against absorbing others' energies.
Magical Rituals: Shield during rituals to maintain focus, protect sacred space, and enhance the potency of your magical work.
Emotional Resilience: Shield during times of emotional vulnerability or stress to prevent energy drain and maintain emotional equilibrium.
Spiritual Exploration: Shield when exploring unfamiliar spiritual realms or engaging in astral travel to safeguard your energy and ensure a safe return.
Shielding is a vital skill in witchcraft, offering protection, empowerment, and clarity in your spiritual journey. By mastering shielding techniques and incorporating them into your daily practice, you can navigate the energetic landscapes of life with confidence and resilience.

Masterlist and AO3
Tumblr media
So I am still new to this whole masterlist thing but again I just wanted to put all my works up. So if you feel froggy jump. If the summaries aren't your shot of whisky, then scroll on by.
Joel Miller
Echoes of Hope-
In a remote cabin, Raven finds solace in living off the grid, maintaining the life her late parents envisioned. The isolation is interrupted when she spots a man and a girl approaching her property. Initially hostile, the trio’s encounter, laced with lies, deceit and budding passion, show just how alliances are formed but they are fragile things, that can shatter in an instance.
Fragile State-
The aftermath of a traumatic car accident leaves a family struggling with fear and uncertainty. The emotional toll weighing them all down as they try to find some normalcy which they all know is impossible until he wakes up. Vulnerability and desperate needs for the man who is the center of their lives to remember who they are and the life he had with them.
Concert Charms-
What happens when you go to a rock concert? Confusion, angst at miscommunication, you begin to wonder if it’s worth getting involved with a stranger. But backyard BBQ’s leads to something more and who knows what can happen in twenty years.
Airwaves-
A hardworking single dad raising two daughters spends his evenings unwinding to late-night radio, listening to an upbeat and fiercely independent DJ with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, with a warm, magnetic voice. Joel becomes a loyal listener, calling into her show each night to request songs that resonate with his life—melodies for his girls, echoes of his past, or tunes Maggie herself loves.
What happens when they form a connection through their nightly calls? When their connection blossoms into something more than just what is said and played over the airwaves?
Beyond the Wall-
The QZ, where survival often trumps trust, two smugglers end up on the wrong side of each other. Amid the bleakness of survival, they share moments that let them briefly forget the hell they live in, their space becoming a sanctuary despite the nightmares plaguing them. But there’s hope or is there? When Tommy joins the Fireflies, something stirs in Stacie, a desire for more than just survival. She knows leaving will sever a bond, one that has been in existence for years. It’s the price of surviving, testing the limits of love and trust. How much strength does it take to leave behind everything, including the man you love?
Tumblr media
Javi Pena
Broken Silence-A tumultuous relationship with a fellow DEA agent, is marked by tension and unspoken feelings. Can a growing affection, mixed with reckless behavior, drugs, death, money and power, really survive? From Bogota, to Miami, to Rome, how far will it go?
Tumblr media
Frankie Morales
Beyond Times Edge-
Fairy rings do not exist. Fairy rings do not exist. Fairy rings do not exist.
Witches are not real. Witches are not real. Witches are not real.
How many times can he repeat this in his head for it to take hold? A thousand? A million?
What happens when a man transcends time and space and falls in love with a witch?
It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus, right?
Deliver Me-
Running. It was what she knew, her ex-hundreds of miles away. A relationship is not what she needed, not what she wanted. Peace is all she craved after years of living in fear, relying on the flight or fight response. Meeting her daughter’s kindergarten teacher, who was the exact opposite of David, her abusive ex, might change that. But what happens when the past rears its ugly head? Will she fight, flee or finally ask for help?
Tumblr media
Marcus Moreno-Some Bodies
In the shadows of the ancient city, a dark romance blossoms between a healer and a sinner. It is a connection of light and dark, life and death. Can he accept her past? Can she believe there is redemption for what she’s done? Can carefully guarded secrets stay that way?
Tumblr media
Marcus Pike-Shadow and Flame
The relationship between Agent Marcus Pike and Daciana, is a game of cat and mouse, taking Marcus around the world—London, Tokyo, Rio, and now Paris. Daciana taunts him, leaving clues that lead him to her hideouts just a little too late, fueling his growing obsession.
Their relationship is more than just professional; there’s an undeniable chemistry between them, a tension that neither can ignore. Marcus, frustrated by his inability to catch her, is simultaneously drawn to her presence.
Marcus knows that catching Daciana may come at a cost—one that goes far beyond the law.

The Internet: From Nuclear-Resistant to Vendor-Dependent Dumbassery
Back in the day, when the Internet was just a glint in DARPA's eye, it was designed with one crucial concept in mind: survival. Picture this—it's the Cold War, the threat of nuclear Armageddon looms large, and the military bigwigs are sweating bullets about communication breakdowns. They needed a network that could withstand a nuke dropping on a major hub and still keep the flow of information alive. Enter the ARPANET, the badass granddaddy of the modern Internet, built to have no single point of failure. If one part got nuked, the rest would carry on like nothing happened. Resilient as hell.
Fast forward to today, and what do we have? A digital house of cards. The once mighty and decentralized Internet has become a fragile mess where a single vendor bug can knock out entire swathes of the web. How did we go from a network that could shrug off nuclear bombs to one that craps its pants over a software glitch? Let's dive into this clusterfuck.
The Glory Days of Decentralization
The original ARPANET was all about redundancy and resilience. The network was designed so that if any one part failed—be it from a technical issue or a catastrophic event—data could still find another route. It was a web of interconnected nodes, a spider's web that kept spinning even if you tore a chunk out. It was pure genius.
This approach made perfect sense. The whole point was to ensure that critical military communications could continue even in the aftermath of a disaster. The Internet Protocol (IP), the backbone of how data travels on the Internet, was conceived to route around damage and keep on trucking. No single point of failure meant no single point of catastrophic breakdown. Brilliant, right?
The Rise of Centralized Stupidity
Then came the tech giants. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft built empires that depended on centralization. Cloud computing took off, and suddenly, everyone and their grandma was storing their data on a handful of massive servers owned by these big players. It was convenient, it was efficient, but it was also the beginning of the end for the Internet’s robust decentralization.
Today, we've got massive data centers dotted around the globe, each housing thousands of servers. These centers are like Fort Knox for data, but unlike Fort Knox, they’re not immune to problems. A single screw-up—a bug in a software update, a misconfiguration, or even a physical hardware failure—can take down huge chunks of the web. Remember that time when AWS went down and half the Internet went dark? Yeah, that was fun. Or more recently, Cloudstrike do something retarded and every single Windows machine running their shitware gets bricked. Fantastic.
The Single Vendor Blues
It gets worse. The consolidation of Internet services means that many critical applications and websites rely on the same vendors for infrastructure. If one of these vendors messes up, it's not just their services that go down—it's everyone who depends on them too. It’s like having a whole city’s power grid depending on one dodgy generator. One hiccup, and the lights go out for everyone.
Consider the infamous BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) hijacks and leaks. BGP is how routers figure out the best path for data to travel across the Internet. It's crucial, and it's also vulnerable. A single misconfiguration or malicious attack can reroute traffic, causing widespread outages and security breaches. And because so much of the Internet is funneled through a few major ISPs (Internet Service Providers), the impact can be catastrophic.
Why This Is So Fucking Stupid
So, why is it that we’ve allowed the Internet to become this fragile? It boils down to a mix of convenience, cost-cutting, and plain old shortsightedness. Centralized services are easier to manage and cheaper to run. But this efficiency comes at the cost of resilience. We’ve traded the robustness of a decentralized network for the convenience of cloud services and single-vendor solutions.
The result? A network that can be crippled by a single point of failure. This isn’t just stupid—it’s dangerous. It leaves us vulnerable to attacks, outages, and other disruptions that could have far-reaching consequences. It’s a stark reminder that in our quest for efficiency, we’ve neglected one of the core principles that the Internet was founded on: resilience.
The Way Forward
What’s the solution? We need to get back to basics. Decentralization should be a priority. More diversity in service providers, more redundancy in infrastructure, and more focus on designing systems that can withstand failures. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be cheap, but if we want an Internet that can survive the challenges of the future, it’s absolutely necessary.
So next time you hear about a massive outage caused by a single vendor’s screw-up, remember: it didn’t have to be this way. We built an Internet that could survive a nuclear war, and then we broke it because it was cheaper and easier. It’s time to fix that before the next big failure hits.
There you have it, folks. From invincible to idiotic, the Internet’s journey has been a wild ride. Let’s hope we can steer it back on course before it’s too late. - Raz.

Zoë Schlanger at The Atlantic:
In the United States, as in most other countries, weather forecasts are a freely accessible government amenity. The National Weather Service issues alerts and predictions, warning of hurricanes and excessive heat and rainfall, all at the total cost to American taxpayers of roughly $4 per person per year. Anyone with a TV, smartphone, radio, or newspaper can know what tomorrow’s weather will look like, whether a hurricane is heading toward their town, or if a drought has been forecast for the next season. Even if they get that news from a privately owned app or TV station, much of the underlying weather data are courtesy of meteorologists working for the federal government.
Charging for popular services that were previously free isn’t generally a winning political strategy. But hard-right policy makers appear poised to try to do just that should Republicans gain power in the next term. Project 2025—a nearly 900-page book of policy proposals published by the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation—states that an incoming administration should all but dissolve the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under which the National Weather Service operates. Donald Trump has attempted to distance himself from Project 2025, but given that it was largely written by veterans of his first administration, the document is widely seen as a blueprint for a second Trump term.
NOAA “should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories,” Project 2025 reads. The proposals roughly amount to two main avenues of attack. First, it suggests that the NWS should eliminate its public-facing forecasts, focus on data gathering, and otherwise “fully commercialize its forecasting operations,” which the authors of the plan imply will improve, not limit, forecasts for all Americans. Then, NOAA’s scientific-research arm, which studies things such as Arctic-ice dynamics and how greenhouse gases behave (and which the document calls “the source of much of NOAA’s climate alarmism”), should be aggressively shrunk. “The preponderance of its climate-change research should be disbanded,” the document says. It further notes that scientific agencies such as NOAA are “vulnerable to obstructionism of an Administration’s aims,” so appointees should be screened to ensure that their views are “wholly in sync” with the president’s. The U.S. is, without question, experiencing a summer of brutal weather. In just the past week, a record-breaking hurricane brought major flooding and power outages to Texas amid an extreme-heat advisory. More than a dozen tornadoes ripped through multiple states. Catastrophic flash flooding barreled through wildfire burn scars in New Mexico. Large parts of the West roasted in life-threatening temperatures. Facing any of this without the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would be mayhem. And future years are likely to be worse.
The NWS serves as a crucial point of contact in a weather crisis, alerting the public when forecasts turn dangerous and advising emergency managers on the best plan of action. So far in 2024, the NWS has issued some 13,000 severe-thunderstorm warnings, 2,000 tornado warnings, and 1,800 flash-flood warnings, plus almost 3,000 river-flood warnings, according to JoAnn Becker, a meteorologist and the president of the union that represents NWS employees. NOAA is also home to the National Hurricane Center, which tracks storms, and the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, whose pilots fly “hurricane hunter” planes directly into cyclones to measure their wind speed and hone the agency’s predictions. NOAA even predicts space weather. Just this past May, it forecast a severe geomagnetic storm with the potential to threaten power grids and satellites. (The most consequential outages never came to pass, but the solar storm did throw off farmers’ GPS-guided tractors for a while.) Privatizing the weather is not a new conservative aim. Nearly two decades ago, when the National Weather Service updated its website to be more user-friendly, Barry Myers, then executive vice president of AccuWeather, complained to the press that “we work very hard every day competing with other companies, and we also have to compete with the government.” In 2005, after meeting with a representative from AccuWeather, then-Senator Rick Santorum introduced a bill calling for the NWS to cease competition with the private sector, and reserve its forecasts for commercial providers. The bill never made it out of committee. But in 2017, Trump picked Myers to lead NOAA. (Myers withdrew his nomination after waiting two years for Senate confirmation.)
Funding for many of NOAA’s programs could plummet in 2025, and the agency already suffers from occasional telecommunications breakdowns, including a recent alert-system outage amid flooding in the Midwest. It is also subject to political pressures: In 2019, the agency backed then-President Trump’s false claim (accompanied by a seemingly Sharpie-altered map) that Hurricane Dorian was headed for Alabama. Private companies might be better funded and, theoretically, less subject to political whims. They can also use supercomputing power to hone NOAA’s data into hyperlocal predictions, perhaps for an area as small as a football stadium. Some, including AccuWeather, use their own proprietary algorithms to interpret NWS data and produce forecasts that they claim have superior accuracy. (Remember, though: Without NWS data, none of this would happen.)
[...] The NWS also has perks that a private system would be hard-pressed to replicate, including a partnership with the World Meteorological Organization, which allows the U.S. access to a suite of other countries’ weather models. International collaboration proved crucial in 2012, when Hurricane Sandy was still churning in the Atlantic Ocean. Initially, the American model predicted, incorrectly, that the storm would turn away from the East Coast. But the European model accurately forecast a collision course, which bought emergency managers in the U.S. crucial time to prepare before Sandy made ferocious landfall in New Jersey.
Project 2025 could have an impact on how accurate and precise weather forecasts are delivered, since NOAA and NWS could be significantly altered.
This is one of many reasons why we must vote Blue up and down the line.
