Tribute to Rachael Lillis (the OG Misty and Jessie)

Very recently, the Pokemon community has suffered a major loss… the original English voice actor for Misty Waterflower and Team Rocket Jessie: Rachael Lillis, has passed away.

In May 2024, a GoFundMe campaign created by Lillis's sister, Laurie Orr, announced that Lillis had developed breast cancer. Several of her fellow actors, including Veronica Taylor and Eric Stuart, shared the campaign to help raise money for her care. Sadly, despite all the dedicated help and donations from them and the community, Lillis lost her battle against the disease and died in Los Angeles on August 10, 2024. Her passing was announced by Veronica Taylor.

Rachael’s loss has left a major impact on not only her sister and fellow actors, but also the Pokemon community and fans… especially those who grew up with the original series (the first five seasons).

Rachael Lillis, thank you so much for your kind nature and your role in voicing Misty, Jessie and even Jigglypuff back in the day. You will never be forgotten and shall always be remembered. 🙏🥺

Princess vs. Princess review

Might as well give an episode review of Pokemon Original Series episode 52, better known as Princess vs. Princess, or going by Japanese names, Fierce Fight! Pokémon Girls' Festival, especially when that episode, more than anything, was ultimately what solidified my status as a die-hard Misty fan. Die-hard enough in fact that I spent a decade and a half trying to ensure she came back and resumed her goal after it was stolen from her. As you may well know, this episode was the actual debut for Jessie’s Lickitung, which had earlier been alluded to in a previously-aired episode, So Long, Yet So Farfetch’d. The episode was aired out of order both in Japan and the United States thanks in large part to the events surrounding Electric Soldier Porygon. It was also missing Togepi in its entirety (presumably because it occurred before the events of Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon as that was when its egg was discovered by Ash). It also alluded to another Pokemon episode that also was aired out of order, which I’ll get to later on. Oh, and the tournament in question essentially acted as a prototype towards Pokemon Contests in the games and anime, meaning Misty technically was the first Coordinator.

Rarus Gang

The gang. The gang is here at last, done by @xabi0407. I'm a huge Pokémon fan so it should be no surprise that I have my own Pokémon region, well two actually. These guys are from the first of them called Rarus. Rarus is far from a traditional region, more like a spinoff game. Its a small region, barely even noticeable on the map. And its a region where Pokémon are far more feral than elsewhere. As such civilization is sparse, being only six small villages in the whole region, each one protected by a guardian Pokémon. But enough about Rarus for now. I bet anyone who is actually reading this wants to know about those guys up there, so let's get into that. Absolutely feel free to ask about this one its been my brainrot since elementary school.

Ava (16): She's the first girl up there. She comes from The Village of the Pyroar, the smallest of the six villages located in Sector Six. She's an adventurous soul, never one to stay still and always looking for a thrill. She's egotistical but she has a king heart, desiring nothing more than to join the Rangers (no not those rangers), a group of people dedicating to protecting people as well as educating the public about Pokémon and helping the two groups coexist. All of the Sectors have a Ranger, all except hers. And she's going to do whatever it takes to become one and protect the people she loves. Her partner Pokémon is a Litleo, one of the children of the Lady Pyroar herself.

Alex (13): This boy is Ava's younger cousin, so close that they are practically siblings. At the age of ten he was thrown out of the village by an angry villager who believed his bloodline was cursed (the people of Rarus are very superstitious) since he can under the speech of Pokémon. As such he has spent the last three years living in the woods learning medicine from a local Sylveon. Aimed with his late father's camera, he travels with Ava after reuniting with her determined to photograph the whole region to show the people of Rarus that it isn't as scary as they've been told. His main partner Pokémon is a shiny Swampert, one that is a runt.

Julie (12): And finally we have Julie, the little cutie pie on the right. She's a very cheerful girl that Ava rescued right before she set off on her journey. Wanting to support her new hero, Julie travels with Ava while also furthering her own goal of becoming a dragon tamer. She's the daughter of the leader of The Village of the Noivern and as such has a deep connection with dragons. She wants everyone to know how wonderful it can be to work together with Pokémon and to not fear them. And she's going to start by befriending the scariest ones of all (except the Zoroark that is). Her partner Pokémon is a Deino that she hatched from an egg.

A lot of OS Ash's 'roasts' were just him being blunt. Like yeah sure, sometimes he was intentionally rude but a lot of them were just lack of social cue understanding.

There's two examples I see brought up a lot: when he asked Nurse Joy if she was the "oddball" in her family and when he said that Wartortle "doesn't look very smart". These clips get taken painfully out of context. The first one is from OS ep 30 "Sparks fly magnemite" where he was trying to get her to treat pikachu and she kept downplaying his concerns while yawning.

(he literally just saw her being weird and told her she was being weird. Sure it's not very polite but he probably just said the first thing that came to mind. It's not like,,, an "epic roast moment" or whatever)

And the second one was him responding to a Pokedex entry. In OS ep 60 "Beach Blank-Out Blastoise" again i doubt it was mean-spirited, just bluntness. Like he's 10 of course he's not gonna look at a turtle and think "wow thats peak intelligence".
