I will say this now going forward that Gen seven is the last time we see looker who during the events of the Gen three remakes is found on the beach without his memory sorta a sad end to him but hopefully not for long!

Pt. 3

I’ve made the executive decision to make this series four parts saving Gen nine for last as I have a lot to say for that gen alone. The next three games after gen six would truly add on to the existing lore and worldbuilding of the established pokemon universe that doesn’t get talked much about so as I’m sure you can tell now I’ll be going into a lot of detail about that taking up a lot of space.

So get cozy and have a nice snack as we stretch the legs and proportions of our trainer characters as we enter the end of the 3DS era and the beginning of the Switch era!

Gen VII

Let’s take a trip to the other side of the pacific as we explore the Hawaiian islands based region of Alola! A region with a name and even greeting that’s a play on the word ‘Aloha’.

My starters for the first and ultra games were a female popplio which was a pleasant welcome after my previous starter luck getting a female popplio for moon and a female rowlet for ultra moon who I named Artemis (in ultra sun I got a male popplio which I actually wanted as a silly thematic thing i planned for the ultra games who I named Apollo).

Gen seven introduces a colorful region filled to the brim with symbolism and historic nods to the islands and their sad reputation in the scientific community.

Hawaii if you aren’t aware, is known as the extinction capital of the world with many species being lost due in part to outside intervention. The Polynesians and natives upheld traditions and practices that carried a true love and respect for these islands even having strict rules into harvesting feathers that were used to adorn many headdresses and royal garb, that would not bring harm to the birds they harvested feathers from! But when Americans came and made deals with natives to bring cultivation they also brought many species that would devastate the native population.

Why did I bring this bit of history up in the context of Pokémon you may ask: because many of the pokemon from the gen seven reflect this part of history in the context of the world of pokemon. From the regional forms being adaptations of pokemon that were brought from ships of humans coming from Kanto long ago to some of the new pokemon like Yungoos & Gumshoos being based on the mongeese that were brought to solve the rat problem that was affecting the growth of sugar cane farming. Something that is also often overlooked is the symbolism of the ultra beast who at first surface glance are stand ins for the seven deadly sins but on closer inspection are actually based on many invasive species that inhabit or found their way to Hawaii!

The games introduced another bonding battle gimmick in the form of Z-moves which coincide with war dances before a battle takes places, it’s actually still a practice used in soccer or if your not American; Futbol. At the start of the game the team will perform these dances depending on their home country!

Let’s talk shiny hunting for a moment as during Gen seven a new effective method or strategy of shiny hunting game out with a new mechanic in wild encounter battles where at any given moment the pokemon you’re fighting can call for help where either an ally shows up or doesn’t which can be kinda sad for the wild pokemon. In the alternate universe that is the ultra games (where the evil teams win) you get ultra wormholes! Which boost the chances for a shiny encounter and legendary encounter which for my fellow shiny hunters your Herculean labor is never unnoticed! We see you working hard 🫡 rock on my guys!

Another theme that is present in the S&M/USUM games was the trope of found family. You trainer enters the region with your mom getting use to a new home where on your journey you become friends with Hau the son of the kahuna who wants to prove himself as a strong capable trainer by being your rival, and Lillie + Gladion who are later revealed to be siblings. Both have run away from their mother who out of grief lashes out in trying to preserve and freeze things in time while obsessing over the thing that took her husband away from her (don’t worry he’s fine and running the bean island thing, he will reunite with her but sadly has gotten amnesia). And who could forget the most tragic boss in any pokemon game through subtle hints and clues if you know where to look:

Ya boi Guzma!

Instead of gyms Alola has its own unique battle gimmick known as kahuana trials, once you get to the end and defeat Alola’s first league, you get to be the regions first champion where you can return and challenge any trainer NPCs, making you their version of Cynthia if you look at it that way XD

Now we saw goodbye to the two screen gameplay of the 3ds and enter the one screen current system that is the Nintendo switch!

Gen VIII

Welcome to Pokémon UK! Where soccer is the battle layout and the trees look subjectively or objectively crass!

And many bisexual awakenings to boot, we got all kinds of builds! Dad bods, tall and feral, pale and emo, and short kings!!!! And depending on the game you also get MILFS.

Silliness aside these games have gorgeous ost and world designs lots of details and more regional variants that resemble trends and culture of the uk! My starter in sword was a sobble I named froppy not a girl tho :( but I’m my playthrough of shield as ripley I got a female scorbunny who is staying a raboot cause meh! >:(

Also in early game I got lucky in shield with a shiny rookidee who stayed a rookidee to the end of the game XD he’s powerful.

Something I’d like to draw attention to is the usage of dialect in the dialogue you have in the game each character either having a more traditional British accent or a stronger thicker Scottish or welsh accent. And one thing I think really carried into Gen nine from here was the cute alternate “nickname” for eevee. Many trainers who use eevee in the game I found also call them Veevee which a certain eevee enthusiast in the next game happens to use often!

The mythos and lore of the game is so good and I can’t do it justice without asking you dear reader to play the games yourself! All I will say is it is very Arthurian and Canterbury tales esc in backstory for the legendaries. Speaking of, a lot of ties to both mythology/folklore and history of the British isles is present in locations and Pokémon! Like Roman bathhouses and army.

The dlcs expand the region by including the Isle of Man and presumably Scotland in the isle of armor and crown tundra respectfully. We also have camping! And curry making!

Plus this would be where the inclusion of marks began which added to the whole sentimental meaning of the Pokémon you caught! Be it weather or personality you even had a guaranteed but rare chance of getting an exclusive curry marked Pokémon that shows up in your campsite that’ll be a guarantee catch as long as you have a specific ball.

Back again with the shiny hunting possibilities with multiple methods now of chains and glowing pokemon- oh I forgot to mention this but Gen eight would bring overworld encounters as well as tall grass encounters. Using curry and dynamax raids or dynamax adventures which really elevated the shiny legendary hunting for those looking for that one special favorite!

are shinies safe in the wild? i'm sure being a different color would be bad for camouflage.

yeah shiny pokémon tend to have a much higher mortality rate. not so much the color difference, more often the sparkle they give off. plus sometimes people poach them for food. i don't even think they taste any different

I finished the "Steeled Resolve" limited time research for the event yesterday morning, and the Steelix I got as a reward turned out to be a SOLID GOLD worm! Heh

Mustard the Shiny Galarian Slowbro! Managed to find G Slowpoke after 265 Random Encounters! This hunt actually changed midway because I got the shiny charm as I was in the middle of doing this hunt

Seaweed Pokémon     Grass/Water Type    They use the roots at the tip of their bitter tail to anchor themselves to the seafloor during naps. Large groups of them can be found on beaches after a storm.

I've had a shiny Swellow for years -- I caught her in the wild and love her a lot, but would it be better to release her so she can breed with other wild Pokemon? I feel like increasing the shiny population in the wild is a better option than trying to breed them in captivity.

absolutely not. there's a Reason shiny pokémon are so uncommon in the wild. not only is the mutation INSANELY rare (and cannot even be passed down via heritage), but they are also just statistically less likely to survive. their glossy/different coloration makes them MUCH easier to spot and it doesn't usually assist their breeding chances. there's no reason to try and """increase wild shiny population"""
