One for St Patrick’s Day, also a recipe for any day when you don’t have any bread and want some really soon.
Best eaten with a generous spread of salted butter, Irish if you can get it (Dylan doesn’t do this, he has a thinness to maintain) or used to chase the last toothsome dregs of Irish Stew, Dublin Coddle, Strong Farmer’s Soup - or indeed stuff from outside Ireland such as chilli, goulash, Sauerbraten and any other tasty savoury thing whose last toothsome dregs need chased...
It makes washing the plates so much easier. ;->
Normally at this point I’d link to my Mum’s 4-or-maybe-5-generation-old recipe on European Cuisines, but the site’s not back up yet.
Instead this link goes to Sotsil’s Wordpress page, which not only gives full credit (Yay!) but adds some fun extra observations, including various ways to improvise buttermilk if you can’t find the real thing.
Here it is.
Here’s a pic of the last time we made it:
Tumblr media
That photo, Dylan’s video and Sotsil’s page all show the oven-baked “cake” version more associated with the South. The North, where I come from, uses the same ingredients and method, but cooks with a skillet / griddle on the stovetop.
That version looks like this:
Tumblr media
Here it is with the traditional “wee cup of tea”.
Tumblr media
Remember how I said something about butter? Jam, too.
Tumblr media
Either warm from the griddle or after being split and toasted, the butter does A Trick, and melts down into the bread. This was the way my Dad liked it.
Tumblr media
The melted butter of course makes room for more butter, if you like butter (Dad did) though biting into it after that can be an adventure.
If you can manage a slice of street pizza without getting grease on your chin elbows, you’re halfway there already...

people are sometimes surprised when I say that I actually like my job in a service station deli. well first of all this is ireland, 98% of customer interactions are polite and pleasant and the worst thing that can happen to me personally is when we get a bus full of teenagers who want chicken fillet rolls. or even worse, two in one day. happened this tuesday. but also i've found that it's actually perfect for my autism/adhd brain because:
I do the same things every day. there are tasks that have to be done every day and tasks that have to be done every week on a specific day. perfect. it's the thing others complain about the most, but me? just how I prefer it
constantly moving and doing something is what keeps me stimulated and staves off boredom aka the worst feeling ever. it gets pretty busy sometimes, which, ideal! I haven't had to touch a stim toy for MONTHS because I put all that excess energy to violently scrubbing dishes
I'm honestly the perfect employee because when I happen to have nothing to do I look for things to clean and tidy and shit and if that doesn't help I ask the manager for extra tasks to keep those hands occupied lol
re: previous point. I'm Fast so I always do everything that needs to be done, too. mostly because my brain takes the rules seriously and when the paperwork says I have to do something. well then I'll bloody well do it won't I. it says it right there. they like me because they know I'm reliable unlike the students who do weekends and even exceed expectations sometimes hah
clear instructions, love em. here I always know what to do and how to do it
the customer interactions follow a similar pattern and are almost always the same so I know what to say and ask and it's not stressful
sometimes people ask me where to find things and such and I Iove a) knowing things and being somebody who knows them and b) telling people about something I know, so it doesn't bother me
there's a whole bunch of safety compliance paperwork tasks like taking temperatures of food every hour that everyone finds annoying. but I love numbers and measuring things and statistics!! it's like ooh I wonder what's the temperature of this soup?? and then I stick a probe in there and find out and write it down! neat. tracking how quickly things cool down in the hot counter is entertaining
there's always 50 things to do at once. I will start 10 at a time. it works out fine. I can check the task list to see if I did it and tick it off. adhd kept in check ✓
others repeat the customers' orders to them to make sure they're getting it right so when I do it because echolalia & needing it to process the information, it goes unnoticed!!
I hate silence so the constant noise of the ovens and the radio and such are a good background noise. plus no one minds when I sing along to the radio as a stim because everyone does it, which is also why I feel safe enough to do so in the first place
no seriously doing stuff gives me energy, so I'm not tired after an 8.5 hour shift (this is even an observation others have made) and still can do the shopping, cook dinner, cook lunch for next day and be busy until midnight. something I couldn't do when studying, which was an energy drainer. huh
(I haven't had this much energy and motivation to do things since I was a CHILD. I'm not joking. I also haven't had a shutdown or anxiety attack or even a bad day in ages since I moved and started working. lying in bed depressed and feeling like I can't breathe? don't know her. also I can actually fall asleep immediately. my brain just shuts down. a feeling I haven't known for years. what is this magic)
I get to put things in the oven and make pizzas and bread and scones from scratch and generally do things I like and am good at and get paid for it! fuck yeah baking!!
I get to clean and put things in order and organise stock and the cold room and freezers and implement Systems and make things Full and GET PAID FOR IT
regular shifts 10-18, perfect, I don't have to get up too early either. allows for going to sleep at midnight and still getting the sweet eight hours
everybody is kind of doing their own thing most of the time and we're all busy so I'm not required to talk to my coworkers if I don't want to. but I can if I do. we all get along well. also good
sometimes I have an issue remembering how many fillings I put in that person's wrap if I wasn't paying that much attention but it's fine, if I charge them 40c less no one will know. there is no failing and no points deducted for a wrong answer. it's chill, no anxiety induced
I'm mostly on my own from 11:30ish until the end, the deli is my kingdom, I make the decisions, no one is in the way, I like it. I like it less when it's busy but I'm capable of handling it either way so eh *shrug*
i have a very good memory (when I do pay attention) so when there are regulars who order the same one or two things I remember them fast and now it's like. white wrap, peppers and plain chicken? and they're like. yeah!! :) I get to make someone happy with something so simple :)
sometimes people eat truly bizarre sandwiches and stuff and I get to internally laugh and/or wonder what the fuck is that. sometimes we actually do laugh about it after. it's fun
I'm also apparently the best new person they've ever had in this shop because I learn extremely fast so that's nice to hear lmao
i easily follow safety regulations such as wearing gloves at all times because dirty dishes and wet bits of food in the sink and raw meat and greasy utensils and sticky bread dough and the inside of the oven mitts are yucky to touch so that's another win-win for them and me
if not the company owner then at least the shop and deli managers are amazing. they will tell you to take any wastage you want without paying for it (because that is a stupid rule that exists that everyone thinks is nonsense and ignores. what's the difference if an out of date bag of crisps goes in the bin or is eaten?) just don't tell the boss, and will go out for drinks with you, and act like normal human beings who are a delight to work with
as a christmas bonus we all got a €50 one4all gift card which everyone thought was sort of shite and useless but are you kidding me? that means a free coffee machine. I got a free coffee machine with it. and a big discount on noise-cancelling wireless earbuds that are actually good and have a long battery life. amazing I'm telling you
yes we get the minimum wage but as someone who never worked or had much money I can live so well off of it? i can comfortably pay for rent and electricity and two grocery shoppings a week that aren't cheap, put a bunch aside, buy some treats online when I feel like it, go places every other week, and still have enough left. I flew to london in december just because. spent £130 on a concert ticket to the o2. I visit places that are a bit further away and stay a night or two once a month. I feel like I eat like a king when I have stuff like homemade bread with avocado spread, homemade cake, fresh strawberries and stuff for breakfast all the time. and that's just for cleaning and making sandwiches?? it sometimes feels unreal to me that I do it for money at all. it's like. housework. things I do anyway all the time at home. I have no reason to complain lol
anyway this is just how I personally feel :') but yeah I like working? who'd have thought. not me. I also feel like I'm the only one there who does. or anywhere really. because I'm so used to retail and service jobs being connected with annoyance and hate and doing them out of necessity etc etc... so I wanted to share that little bit of positive experience I guess. and needed to rant about it somewhere.
is it weird that working 42 hours a week in a shop improved my mental health? probably. but I also get it and can't believe I didn't figure it out earlier because. it's the moving lads. I'm in a constant state of busy. once I stop doing things and start lying in bed all day it goes downhill and the energy and motivation don't come back. but now? that's impossible. even on weekends. I can't put off the ironing because I need the uniform. I have to cook because I can't live on cheese toasties and the veg in the fridge is gonna go off if I don't use it. I have to travel because there's nothing to do in town except lying in bed all day. and once I make a Plan, not even the rain or having to get up at 6:30 to catch the morning bus stops me from following it. and I don't mean that in a stressful grind culture way, I mean it in a helpful actually-it's-pretty-slow-and-quiet way! I found a way of hacking the executive dysfunction completely by accident here and. it's a job

since you asked for more questions :)
What is your favourite river you have NOT seen in person?
What is your favourite type of bread?
Conventional Gas or Electrical oven?
I feel like this is a personality test that I don't get yet but will show I might have a new mental diagnosis lol
Any rivers in Ireland, I have Irish ancestry but no one kept it coming to America so I'm trying to reconnect. Also that river that turns into a cloud because it's soo tall and has a strong up draft.
Bread is favorite bread lol umm not wheat or whole grain breads where you see the seeds, like sesame seed buns on hamburgers aren't nice. Naan bread is awesome! Super delicious, I can it that on its own where most bread need at least butter. Oh, bolillo rolls are awesome too. Tortillas are awesome. Is pizza crust technically a bread? That's awesome. But to pick just one, I'll say bolillo rolls, nice and large but not too large for 1 person, great for sandwiches and soups.
Gas ovens are the best. Everything cooks better with gas ovens. But I know we are getting away from gas and that electric ovens may have gotten better over the years but all I had is shitty electric that takes forever to warm up and doesn't cook right
Next question! Lol

Leaping lizards, frogs and rabbits, today is February 29th, which means it’s Leap Day 2024! Leap Days occur only once every four years when an extra day is added to the end of February, except in century years that aren’t exactly divisible by 400. This formula was adopted in 1582 to better synchronize the number of days in the Gregorian calendar with the Earth’s orbit of the sun for both religious and agricultural reasons. Aligning the calendar with the sun’s path proved crucial for farmers who need to follow a precise schedule for growing purposes. Leap days help ensure that they plant and harvest their crops at the right time during the right seasons. So, in recognition of this agriculturally significant, quadrennial event, here is a foursome of ideas to get you *leaping* out of your seat to the farmers market this weekend. 1) Four Step Italian Wedding Soup Traditionally speaking, it has been the norm for men to be the ones “popping the question” when proposing marriage. But legend has it that in 5th century Ireland Saint Brigid of Kildare asked Saint Patrick to grant an exception to this rule by allowing women to propose once every four years on Leap Day. If a man refused a woman’s proposal on February 29th, he was to compensate her with twelve pairs of gloves to hide her ringless finger.  Whether or not you’re considering getting down on bended knee anytime soon, making Italian Wedding Soup from scratch is a wonderfully warming way to romance your partner – or to pamper yourself with a simmering bowl of savory goodness:  Ingredients:
½ pound Roaming Acres ground bison meat
1 large egg from Yellow Bell Farm, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons dry breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
½ teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon onion powder
5 ¾ cups Yellow Bell Farm chicken broth
2 cups thinly sliced escarole from 4E Green Farm
1 cup uncooked orzo pasta or any small-sized pasta from La Trafila Pasta
⅓ cup finely chopped Sun Sprout Farm carrot
Steps:
Combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, basil, and onion powder in a bowl.
Shape beef mixture into 3/4-inch balls and place on parchment-lined tray.
Heat broth in large pot over medium-high heat until boiling. Stir in escarole, orzo, carrot, and meatballs and return to boil. Reduce heat to medium and cook at slow boil for about 10-minutes, stirring frequently until pasta is tender yet firm to the bite.
Serve hot and enjoy!
2) Four Ingredient Salmon, Potato & Broccoli Sheet Pan Dinner  This four-ingredient sheet pan dinner is so quick and easy that it’ll make you *leap* for joy! Sheet pan dinners are not only super convenient to make, they’re also eco-friendly because they require just the oven to be lit and produce only one dirty pan to clean, saving both energy and water.
Ingredients
Broccoli from Jersey Farm Produce cut into small florets
Potatoes from Sun Sprout Farm cubed into 1- to 1½-inch pieces
Salmon fillets from American Pride Seafood
Seasoning: Garlic, olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt & pepper
Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease a rimmed baking sheet with olive oil or nonstick cooking spray.
Place broccoli and potatoes on baking sheet and drizzle with two tablespoons Kontoulis/Arlotta olive oil. Sprinkle with finely chopped garlic, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Toss it all together then spread it out on baking sheet. Roast for 20 minutes.
While vegetables are roasting, season salmon fillets. Remove tray from oven and nestle salmon in between vegetables. Roast for another 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender and salmon is cooked to your liking.
Serve immediately.
3) Four Cheese Pizza Pizza ai quattro formaggi (aka four cheese pizza) originated in the Campania region of Italy where it was first made with a combination of mozzarella, gorgonzola, fontina and parmesan cheese melted together. Over time, different parts of the country developed their own versions of this iconic pizza using a variety of local cheeses. But you don’t have to *leap* over the pond to Italy to grab a slice, as Wave Hill Breads 4 Formaggio Pizza is parbaked and locally made with fresh and shredded mozzarella, parmesan, asiago and Romano cheese. Simply take one from the freezer, pop it in the oven at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes and enjoy!  4) Four Syllable Veggies  Here’s your Leap Day Word of the Day – Quadrisyllabic. Quadrisyllabic means any word with four syllables which, of course, happens to include four currently in-season vegetables. These locally grown veggies are easy to spot at our farmstalls and work wonderfully in the recipes listed below:     Cauliflower -- Cauliflower, Potato and Leek Soup Celeriac -- Creamy Celeriac Mash Romanesco -- Parmesan Roasted Romanesco Rutabaga -- Oven-Baked Rutabaga Fries We hope you enjoy these four-tifying Leap Day foodie ideas. While we await another four years for the next Leap Day to transpire, we wish you a four-tuitous weekend full of four-tunate finds at the farmers market.

The stainless steel pizza kit consists of: Round peel: the round peel is lightweight, sturdy and easy to handle. Peel: the peel to put the pizza in the oven, with its handle and brushed stainless steel structure, guarantees robustness, cleanliness and handling.

Our local Supervalu supermarket has a small but totally authentic Italian section, and @dduane bought this flour to try it out.
She prepared enough dough - once divided up - for three pizze, and the first one (Friday) was so remarkably good that it was half-consumed and thoroughly non-photogenic before either of us said "Pix...?"
So here are a couple of shots of what happened next (Saturday). Instead of pizza, Flammkuchen.
Dish from Alsace, recipe from Switzerland, flour from Italy, sour cream from Lithuania, smoked pork belly from Poland, onions from Ireland, cook from USA.
Tumblr media
Today (Sunday) was pizza again, to finish the last ball of prepared dough, and it was nearly * as good as the first time.
This time, photos!
Tumblr media
* Three days is enough for any one batch of dough, even when kept in the fridge. It no longer stretches as well, so this pizza crust didn't develop a nice puffy edge the way the first one did.
An insignificant niggle, noted for next time. Make and use immediately for best effect.
The imbalanced layout of the onions...
Tumblr media
...is so DD can avoid eating too many and annoying her IBS.
So, onto the peel and into the oven (10 mins / 230°C).
Tumblr media
Out of the oven...
Tumblr media
...and into the diners.
Tumblr media
Yum!
We're DEFINITELY going to buy more of that flour.

❤️ last song you listened to?
Blistered World - Plasma Canvas
🧡 ideal pizza toppings?
Definitely depends upon the pizza style, particularly the crust, and where I'm getting the pizza from. I'm a big fan of margherita pizza on a brick-oven thin crust pizza, or peppers and sausage on deep dish.
💛 dream vacation
Probably a nice multi-day stay in and around Mexico City. I'd also like to get to Ireland and Wales at some point, but I'd enjoy the hell out of any vacation that is paced slowly enough for me to rest in between legs of travel. I've been stuck at home for far too long.
💚 earth, air, fire, or water?
I have a lot of fire in my chart but I've always been attracted to earthy themes.
💙 cartoon you grew up on?
Oh, christ. I was super sheltered. The least embarrassing honest answer here is Veggie Tales. I had nightmares about the Magic School Bus until I was like, eleven.
💜 favourite scent?
espresso, weed, leather, petrichor, autumn leaves, finished compost, and tomato plants.

Time and space: Actor Colin O’Donoghue
The star of hit television show Once Upon a Time on living between Ireland and Canada, his pizza oven and the importance of having a sharp knife
Tumblr media
Home will always be Ireland. When I was filming on Once Upon a Time, the television series in which I played the character of Hook, for six years, I spent about nine months of each year in Vancouver. My house in Ireland [where he lives with his wife, Helen, and two children] is in the countryside, not far from the Irish Sea. It used to be the postmaster’s house and is like two houses connected by a glass box. So, there’s the older side of the house and the newer one.
How did you find the house? My dad used to be an estate agent and, when we were trying to find a place, he advised us to take a look at a lot of properties. He said: “The house will let you know if it’s the right one for you.” As soon as we came in here we pictured ourselves having coffee and breakfast and all that kind of stuff. We loved everything about it.
Sometimes an older house needs a lot of work, but we bought it as-is from the previous owner, who worked in interior design or architecture and had renovated and extended. I like to do DIY but, because I was filming in Canada at the time, we just didn’t have the time to think about renovating a place or even building our own. We are lucky that we came across this, and absolutely adore it.
Tumblr media
How would you describe your decorative style? It’s sort of mismatch. I like antiques, so we have a lot of older things. I’m a sucker for limited-edition things and I’m crazy about guitars — I used to play in a band and love the look and shape of them — so there are guitars around the house.
I really love art, too — I was going to go to art college at one stage. I buy pieces that speak to me. I don’t like one specific style, it depends on what I’m getting from the piece when I see it. I appreciate that somebody has taken time and effort, really thought about and put their emotions into a work. If I see something I like, I’ll pick it up from wherever we are filming. I just had an original piece of native art I bought in Vancouver framed.
Tumblr media
Where do you spend most of your time? In the kitchen to be honest, pretty much the same as every Irish family. We have a back room that’s slightly bigger, so we spend a lot of time in there, too, and light the fire on cold days. It can be very cosy.
What was your worst house experience? I never had one. I moved in with my brother, when I moved from Drogheda to Dublin to go to college in the 1990s. He is older than me, was working and was sharing a house with a couple of his friends. They were between four and eight years older than me, they all had jobs and it was a nice house. I was lucky in that respect. I’m quite clean, not obsessively so, but I don’t think that I’d be able to stand being an absolute squatter. I’d have to tidy up.
Do you garden? We’ve been growing some vegetables with the kids in the garden since the start of lockdown which has been great. They get to see it grow and water them each day. It is a really nice thing to do.
What kind of gadgets do you have? My favourite gadget at the minute is an outdoor pizza oven. I don’t know if technically it’s a gadget, but I pretty much use it every week. I’ll make my own pizza dough and pizza sauce. It is wood-fired, so you have to do the whole ritual of lighting the fire and waiting for the pizza stone to heat up. I just got a wood smoker, as well, for smoking large chunks of meat.
What items would you take with you if you had to move overnight? It probably would be the pizza oven because I absolutely love making pizzas. There’s one painting that I would definitely take. Anthony Hopkins painted it and gave it to me when we filmed The Rite, my first film, in 2010.
Is there anything you travel with that makes you feel centred? I always take a photograph of my family. If they’re not travelling with me, I put it beside the bed, just to feel like they’re there. The last couple of places I’ve rented while on location — we filmed my latest television series The Right Stuff, in which I play American test pilot Gordon Cooper, over five months in Florida — have had terrible knives. It’s important to have a really sharp knife in the kitchen. How do you cook with blunt knives? If I’m going to be there for a long time, I’ll probably buy a sharp knife.
O’Donoghue stars in The Right Stuff, a television series based on the Tom Wolfe book of the same name which charts the early days of the American space race, available on Disney Plus

Queen live at Royal Dublin Society Simmonscourt in Dublin, Ireland - November 22, 1979 (Part-1)

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tonight is the opening night of the "Crazy Tour," the tour when Queen decided to go back and play the smaller, more intimate venues (especially the London ones). The lighting rig had to be scaled down to accommodate most of the venues. There used to be five rows of red and green lights and four rows of white, but the red and green have been cut back to four as well. Along with the change in the band's attire (particularly Freddie's pants with knee-pads) and Roger's bass drum head sporting a picture of himself, all these factors make pictures from this tour easy to distinguish from those taken earlier in the year.
Queen's old front of house sound technician returned to the job after a long illness (the Jazz album is dedicated to him for this reason).
The show now begins with an intense drone leading into the thunder and lightning. Combined with their lighting rig (even the scaled down version), this would be a very effective opening of their show. It has been said that people were often left breathless before the band even played a note.
Being their first gig in the UK since releasing Live Killers, the band decide to shake things up a bit by opening the show with Let Me Entertain You, followed by the fast We Will Rock You. The setlist is otherwise mostly similar to the live album and previous tour, with a couple new songs added to the repertoire (Mustapha made its first appearance in Saarbrucken in the summer).
Tonight would see the first performances of Save Me and Crazy Little Thing Called Love, which had been recently recorded. The latter has been released as a single and would fare quite well on the charts, becoming their first American #1. Save Me would be released as a single early next year, peaking at #11 in the UK. On stage, Brian May plays the piano on the ballad. Through 1981, he'd play the first two verses on piano and switch to guitar at the second chorus. The instrumentation would change slightly in 1982 with the addition of an auxiliary keyboardist. In the meantime, these 1979 versions would have the band finishing the song at the end of the last chorus, omitting the piano outro.
As for Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Brian would start on acoustic guitar, switch to a black Telecaster for the guitar solo, and to his beloved Red Special for the finale of the song. Unlike the 1950s-flavoured studio version, it would become a heavy rock song by the final verse. By 1982, the end of the song would often be a relatively long jam. Freddie would play a 12-string Ovation Pacemaker acoustic guitar for the song through 1982, and would switch to a cream-coloured Telecaster from 1984 to 1986. Throughout the years, he would often joke about how he knew how to play only a few chords on the guitar.
On stage, the band end Crazy Little Thing Called Love with a coda similar to the one in You're My Best Friend.
This is Queen's first of four shows they would play in Ireland, and so they perform a one-off version of Danny Boy in the encore. As told by someone who attended the show, almost no one in the audience knew the words of the second verse, while Freddie had done his homework.
During Now I'm Here, a fan manages to make his way on stage for a brief moment, and Freddie sings, "Now He's Here." An audience recording of the song was reportedly broadcast on the radio not long after the show, but no known copy has survived.
At the end of the show, instead of playing their version of Britain's national anthem as always, in Ireland the band use the outro from the A Day At The Races album - the only location where they would make a political gesture like this.

“I couldn't believe it! Summer 1979 and I was reading a review of a gig in one of Dublin's evening newspapers. At the end of the review, added almost as an afterthought, was news that the promoter, Pat Egan, was planning to bring Queen to Dublin! I read and re-read it but still could not believe it. Queen, at last, would make their debut in front of an Irish audience! The Crazy Tour would begin in Dublin. Fast forward to the autumn and myself and a number of friends from school eagerly queued up to buy tickets to see our heroes. After buying the tickets, it was a long countdown to the show which would take place on Thursday November 22nd 1979. I still clearly remember the date even after all the years. Eventually the day arrived. That night Queen were on Top of the Pops with Crazy Little Thing Called Love but I didn't mind missing it. We were going to the real thing! After a long day in school we made our way to the RDS in Dublin. After a wait outside the gates we were allowed in to the venue and found a standing place near the front of the stage. I recall it got ever more crowded at the front of the stage and before the show, the tour manager (was it Gerry Stickells?) had to go on stage and appeal to people near the stage to relax and step back. Eventually the lights dimmed, there was a tremendous roar from the crowd, the Pizza Oven exploded into light and there were our heroes only yards away from us. I recall at the time being so overwhelmed by the amazing lights and the fact that we could almost touch Freddie, dressed all in black leather and sunglasses, that I barely registered that Let Me Entertain You was the opener. After that, it was into We Will Rock You and, largely the same songs and running order as the Live Killers album which I knew very well (!!) at that time and had almost worn out playing over the previous months. There were however some exceptions. Of most interest to Queen fans now and the biggest shock to me then was that Danny Boy was played live - a great version, from what I recall which received a terrific ovation from the audience. Also, If You Can't Beat Them was played which surprised me as it wasn't included on Live Killers and I wasn't even aware at that time that it was ever played live. The Dublin show was the first time that Save Me and Crazy Little Thing were played live. I remember being astounded at the power and range of Freddie's voice - even better than Live Killers. At that stage he was developing as a singer and over the next few years became recognised as one of the best rock singers and best frontmen in the business. (Am I the only one who was slightly disappointed with the quality and range of his voice during the final Magic Tour especially when compared to earlier tours?). The gig was a terrific show, especially to a young person attending his first major rock gig, and many of the songs are still memorable to me. During Now I'm Here one idiot actually got up on stage and Freddie sang "Now *he's* here" before he was removed from the stage. One girl also managed to get up on stage and plant a kiss on Freddie during the show. The following night, a couple of songs recorded during the show by someone in the audience were played on the Radio Dublin pirate radio station. These included Now I'm Here. A bootleg of the gig definitely exists *somewhere* but, try as I might, I cannot track it down. I would be grateful if anyone reading this comes across it or has it in their collection, that they get in touch with me!” - John Brogan
“The first night of the Crazy tour - amazing show. Seen some people on the web note that they played Danny Boy that night but for some reason I can only remember Brian playing it as part of his solo and us singing our heads off. Freddie handing out a champagne glass to a friend of mine who still has it. Anyway it was nearly 30 years ago and I find it hard to remember what I did last week never mind that long ago. They ended the show with the outro from A Day At The Races which took me a while to figure out what it actually was. The lighting rig was totally amazing - the pizza oven was aptly named - it was scorching and the intensity of the light when it turned around behind the band to face the audience was something else made a couple of friends that night (in the horse show bar opposite the venue) that I am still in contact with and we are all still crazy after all these years.” - Gary aka hoops
“A couple of notes on the Queen show in Dublin, 1979. Fred was in red trousers, not black as John Brogan has mentioned above. Small point but there you go. And when it came time for the audience to sing along to Danny Boy, almost no one knew the words of the second verse - I remember one chap shouting out to Freddie that he was doing a grand job all by himself. I saw them sixteen times in all and that show, the first, has a very special place in my memory. On the subject of bootlegs from that show, a chap in Aungier Street in Dublin used to have just about every show ever played in Dublin by anyone worth taping. I got a really bad and incomplete (C60) copy of the Queen show from him just as a record of having been there - his voice could be heard just before the start of the show, discussing bootlegging. The tape is somewhere in a box in my house and should I come across it, I'll let you know.” - Paul
