Pikmin Age Headcanons Pt. 1

Kinda been wanting to share what I think each Pikmin character went through to get to where they are in the present! My only request is you don't hate on me for these. Just respect them or give me insight on things I might have missed.

🛠️Alph - Age 22 Grew up watching his grandfather Drake work on aerospace projects since he learned to walk. He goes through school, graduates high school at 18, attends KoTech (Koppai School of Technology) for 4 years and graduates at 22 with his Bachelors in Aerospace Engineering. Straight out of college, he is selected to join Charlie and Brittany on their Pikmin 3 journey to collect fruit and save their planet.

🪴Brittany - Age 24 Graduated High school at 18. Studied at KoTech, majoring in botany in the Life Sciences Academy of the school. Started off in small businesses that ranged from plant-based medicinal studies to help Koppai’s food crisis until being selected to embark on her journey with Alph and Charlie at the age of 24.

🦆Charlie - Age 28 Graduated High School at 18. Studied at Kotech and was part of the Ranger program. He became a space ranger at 22 and goes on ranger missions for years assisting in treasure collection to support his family financially until being selected to go on the Pikmin 3 journey with Alph and Brittany at age 28.

🔵Louie - Age 25-26 Graduated Highschool at 18. For a a year, he didn't do much with his life and often explored the area's around his grandmother's house, such as the mountains behind her house. He didn't go to college and didn't have an idea of what he wanted to do so his family forced him to start getting minimum wage jobs that constantly fired him due to his laziness and obsession with food breaks for years. He finally winds up in Hocotate Freight at the age of 25. Accepting him despite not having a college degree due to the business being pretty unprofessional.

🔴Olimar - Age 35-36 Graduated high school at 18. Studied Biology, got a BA at 22, but didn’t want to take it further. He falls in love in college and marries when he is 25, they have their first son when he's about 26. This makes his son about 9-10 years old. Then they have a daughter when he's about 30. This makes her around 6-7 years old. He ended up at Hocotate Freight, mainly excited to travel space. Hestarted here after a few minimume wage jobs out of college and started at 27. He has been working there for 9 years.

⚫President - Age 40-41 Graduated high school at 18, was very active in business and studied it, getting a masters in business at the age of 24. He became active in climbing the corporate latter at Hocotate Freight, but was also very gullible. He finally becomes president at the age of 35, being president of Hocotate Freight for 5-6 years, replacing Olimar's previous boss.

📡Yorke - Age 28-29 Graduated high school at 18. Studied at Kotech for 4 years and graduated at 22 with a bachelor's in Aerospace engineering. Went on treasure missions for years to send his family money. Currently continuing to do so.

What the heeelllll??

i feel like my posts have been getting less and less activity. i dunno if it's because i haven't been posting art WIPs or what. or is it because i act like a freak or a weirdo??? i actually do not even know brudda but like i feel like i need a reality check every so often due to my assumption that i make everyone i know uncomfortable. and i mean EVERYONE. idk but i feel like i just do or say something that makes me repugnant to others, and then there's also people not telling me whenever i do make people feel like that so i'm stuck not knowing what the hell i'm doing wrong in a social situation. and then there's also the fact that i'm impulsive and i got no filter partially due to my ADHD, but i hate blaming my flaws on my ADHD and i take full responsibility for it cuz i don't wanna be one of those people that try to get away with everything due to a disadvantage. and then there's the fact that i actually DID do bad shit in the past, and i didn't even realize it was bad shit until it was too late, like the time when i got banned from The Zoo (r/Pikmin discord server). fuck it i try so hard not to curse too often but i got a bad habit of cursing, maybe i make people feel uncomfortable that way too? and i also curse a lot because i don't wanna get physically angry. beacuse if i do then people are gonna think that i need to be sent to the psych ward.so i decide to cry for long periods of time, except my family is already concerned that i cry for too long and will threaten to send me to the hospital if i dont shut the fuck up and stop crying I DON'T KNOW SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THE FUCK'S GOING ON

i hope someone sees this post and gives me a reality check if i need one (i probably do, it's probably the reason why my activity's going down)

EDIT: sorry if i'm like rambling too much abt shit like this but i get paranoid that people are ignoring me and that it's my fault WAYYYY too often it's not healthy. i'm gonna delete this after a few days because let's be honest i need to stfu sometimes

Olimin aus intrigue me, would you elaborate further on it if you do desire?

The au is still MASSIVELY in the works rn so its really hard to actually describe it.

Best way to put it with how shambled it is rn is that in this au leaflings are not products of a living or dead being put through an onion, but rather a living creature infected with spores that make them more aggressive ala Cordyceps (but not quite). They only exist to spread the infectious spores further and will do so by any means necessary so its no longer JUST dandori battles Pom has to worry about; because they will actively attack and sicc pikmin on you to stop and distract you so they can shatter the helmet.

These leaflings are also assholes and they eat any pikmin that doesn't perform well, and the pikmin only stay with them because of the spores they give off.

Moss only stays with olimar because he's still her family and she hopes that maybe someday he'll go back to normal.

Finishing the Year by 100%ing Pikmin 4

Yeah, this is the last tumblr post for me in 2023.

I really didn't expect to get Pikmin 4 so soon and be able to finish it before new year. Not to say it didn't have a bit of difficulty, the dandori challenges were a pain in the ass. I'm just surprised by the amount of time I had for this game.

Recently I had to go on a business trip to California and to pass time in the hotel room, I brought a Switch with Pikmin 4. Apparently the time I spent in the hotel room over the week long trip was enough for me to 100% the game! Would love to go on trips more often but it's far too expensive.

Like previous Pikmin games, the main story involves you using pikmin to collect giant every day objects and genocide the local wildlife so the pikmin can take over and dominate the area.

Family friendly Nintendo.

Anyhow, this fourth installment... fifth?... adds the goal of rescuing tourists who came to this planet filled with lethal levels of oxygen (what do these guys breath?) for various reasons such as real estate and looking at flowers. I personally think there are better options than a planet where you're chances of death via suffocation is high but I also know a few people who actively grab venomous snakes with their bare hands so I guess preservation instincts are different between people.

Also half of these castaways turned into leaf people. The pikmin are starting to take over the tiny tiny humans!

These leaf people demand you do something called a "dandori" challenge which is just doing a specific objective in the shortest amount of time available. If you want to 100% the game, you will have to get the platinum medal for ALL dandori challenges and battles!

This is the main reason I expected to not finish the game until next year. The dandori stuff stresses me out so much! Putting a time limit on it was bad enough but grading me on how much time I use just hurts. I hate it!

One more thing, I looked it up out of curiosity and dandori is an actual Japanese word! Yeah apparently it's a word that describes the strategic organization of tasks and working efficiently to a plan...

Basically the entire concept of Pikmin as a whole. Yet I struggled with it...

So they also have a few side missions, a treasure catalogue, and a bestiary. The bestiary was filled out thanks to me running all over chucking Pikmin at anything that moved. Including a massive giant dog that shows up some time late in the game.

Side missions were mostly "find all X crew" which is easily done when completing the caves. Oh there are two that are grow 300 pikmin and make 300 pikmin bloom but those are radiant quests so I'm certain they don't count. I also had to buy all gear and Oatchi skills but I recommend getting them when you can because it makes the game go by faster.

For the treasure catalogue I needed 100 purple pikmin which you can easily do without a purple onion. Yes the purple bois got their own onion this time! However, in order to get the purple and white onion you have to go through the dandori sage trials, which were a nightmare of 10 levels on their own.

I do not think I needed to platinum the sage trials... I never did but I choose to claim that it is unnecessary. For the sake of sanity. Those trials were brutal!

After getting the purple onion I had to find a way to grow 100 purple pikmin which is rather hard to do when you wiped out everything on the maps. Leaving me with the flower pellets as my only option. Took about three days but I got to 100 purple bois and collected the gold bar, finishing the treasure catalogue!

With all that done I just have to say: Pikmin 4 is a very enjoyable game you can have loads of fun with. It's a calming type of game where you can fling plant bois to collect shiny items. However, you should never attempt to 100% complete this game. Attempting to 100% Pikmin 4 will leave you more stressed than the year 2020.

Think I fully understand why Nintendo never bothered with achievements.

Claire can charitably be described as creepy. More honestly, she is extremely unstable and obsessive. It’s to the point where her own cousin is afraid of her. Claire is persistent and will go to great lengths to befriend those that catch her eye and act very aggressively should her person of affection be harmed, insulted, or “taken away” from her. If there’s one redeeming quality she does have, it’s that she is caring towards her cousin and those she’s fond of (even if, especially for the latter it’s a smothering and obsessive degree.), but that’s it.

Trivia/Additional Information

Claire’s headcanon voice is Stephanie Sheh, who voices Tharja from Fire Emblem Awakening.

Her birthday is July 3rd, coming from both the release date of Pikmin 3 and that it’s the third game. This (fittingly) makes her a Cancer.

Claire has 16 restraining orders against her from her kindergarten classmates and teacher. Claire is the cousin of Brooke Vapor, daughter of the Water Wraith.

Nintendo Direct: June 2023

I have been catching the last couple of Nintendo Directs, and I was super psyched to see the most recent one. The one before gave us old handheld systems playable on the Nintendo Switch. So I was hoping for good news in games coming up...

Now, I watched it on 6/25 so days after. If you have a switch, you can still watch it. Or maybe Youtube? Here are some of my thoughts on the games I saw:

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC: I have been out of the pokemon loop for while but the DLC’s look good.

Sonic: same thing with pokemon, but glad to see it still alive. It has been around a while.

Palia: looks like a neat real life simulator.

Persona 5 Tactica: Cute characters in chibi form! Happy to see a title that has only one other title on switch to have more titles.

Mythforce: this is such a nostalgia trap, but it looks real fun! I would totally play this!

Splatoon 3 Splatfest: This game seems like COD but kid version. I never really got into this. But this looks like DLC.

Detective Pikachu Returns: The movie was great, the game was good. I love this as a direction for Pokemon.

Super Mario RPG: This is a remake of an older game of the same name. It looks like a refreshing take on mario games, which are classic.

New Nintendo Switch Peach Game: This looks like another remake of an older game.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 Dark Moon: Another old remake, I do love the Luigi games and hope that this is to appease the players as they make a new one.

Batman Arkham Trilogy: This was supposed to be one of the better batman games and comics, and this looks dope-I am looking forward to playing this for the first time on switch.

Gloomhaven: Good looking game, card based.

Just Dance: nice active game, nice to see it continuing.

Silent Hope: Anime game. meh.

Fae Farm: this looks good, I kind of think there are too many simulators out, but it is supposed to be one of the better ones.

Hot Wheels Unleased 2: Looks ok for a racing game, but I also kind of feel like there is a lot of competition in this genre.

Manic Mechanics: This game looks like overcooked, and the builder game. I love games like this, this one is happening.

Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope: Mario doesn’t do well in turn based games, in my opinion, but its an interesting game.

Dragon Quest Monsters: This looks like a pokemon wannabe, but it looks not bad.

Pikmin 1, 2, 4: I have never played this series but it looks cute and I would not mind this as a multiplayer family game.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: this is an old game, I might even try it if it goes on sale.

Vampire Survivors: This game looks really fun, simple but oh so deceptively hard. I do really want to try this game.

Headbangers Rhythm Royale: I am getting this game, its a beat game with birds. Yes.

Penny’s Big Breakaway: It looks like a hodgepodge of many games but unique in its own way.

Mario Kart Booster Course Pass Wave 5: I should be more excited but I am not.

Star Ocean The Second Story R: Meh, another anime game.

WarioWare Move It: This looks like 1 2 switch but mario, I mean wario. Might be nice for an active game.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Amiibo: Amiibos are still a thing? This game looks good, but there are so many zeldas out at one time right now.

Super Mario Bros Wonder: Looks like a new direction for the mario side scroller.

Obviously, ones that did not stick with me means I was not the intended customer but there are so many gaming customers these days! We already wasted an entire day in that cave, and now you want us to waste even more time doing something we don’t even know will work to help someone who tried to kill us? Dwarf Bublorbs and Bulbear

Finally got around to taking some proper pictures of these.

It took a bit because working on these things for nearly two weeks straight put me in a Pikmin mood and I went and played through Pikmin 2 again for like the 5th time. Also thinking about Red Dwarf Bulborbs all the time made me finally watch through Red Dwarf, it was good. Anyway,

Red Dwarf Bulborb

Originally the three base models were all Red Dwarf Bulborbs because I was trying out some moulding techniques and I thought it would be neat to have 3 of the same thing, but this time around I decided to make them all different. Probably an effect of my change in purpose with Pikmin models starting with the Puffstool.

This one I posed with it’s mouth opened which made it a lot trickier to do so it was the last one to get finished. For the base I chose a grassy area with some Cherry Blossom petals to reference the Awakening Wood.

As I’m putting this one back on the shelf I’m thinking that I might add a Pikmin being thrown at it. It was meant to just be roaring but the eyes make it look like it’s looking up at something...

Orange Dwarf Bulborb

I really like the how this one came out which is why it’s usually at the front of all the group shots I’ve done. I really like the colour combination and the fact that it isn’t just a recolour of the Dwarf Red Bulborb is really cool, with how the darker colour is more around the snout. This one was the first one I did the eyes for because it was so different, with the brown eyeballs and the slit pupils.

This base was the one I struggled with the most. I eventually settled with tile because Orange Dwarf Bulborbs are only found underground and I always found the tile sublevels to be striking. Next to that amazing rest sublevel with the shadow of the drain though that one is the best in the whole game. I was really happy with how the tile came out, I was worried it would turn out a million times more complicated than the other three and take forever but it turned out fine.

Snow Bulborb

It worked out really well that I had exactly enough old Dwarf Bulborbs to make all the different types from Pikmin 2. Let me say that doing this sort of painting with white paint before I got an airbrush would have been practically impossible.

A snow base was the obvious choice. I know they’re only found underground but there’s still snow there! The snow was made with some activated plaster powder I had lying around from years ago, It’s the same stuff I used to take this picture in 2010:

That’s the year most of my Pikmin models started as far as I can tell, I believe that was around the time I managed to get Pikmin 2. The Wii being backwards compatible was so useful. I remember making some really really basic stuff when I first got Pikmin 1 for christmas one year but Pikmin 2 really kicked it off.

Dwarf Bulbear

When I was making these I did the main body colour then the faces. That was a really tricky part to go through mentally because honestly they just look so weird without the spots I found my self questioning if I messed up and should start over multiple times. it’s weird how vital some spots are to the overall look of the creature. I went with red eyes like in Pikmin 1 because I really didn’t want to do wholly black eyes.

The base was modelled after The Distant Spring since that’s where you find them in Pikmin 1. I always really liked the beaches in that area. Years ago when I was planning a really large scale diorama i think it was the Distant Spring that was the base. The complicated patterns in the sand in the landing site always interested me.

Grubdog family

I just wanted to pose them all together like this to emulate this old picture taken in 2012:

7 years makes a difference I guess. I was quite proud that I made them all free standing but really all that amounted to was constantly finding them fallen over and eventually just leaving them leaned up against the wall.

Overall I’m really happy with how they came out. They’re not perfect by any means, the eyes are too small but I’ve literally spent 7 years since I made the originals looking for things that would make good eyes and these beads were the best I could find. I’m like that I guess, I have lots of ideas that I’d like to work on and am constantly looking for materials that would help, currently I have a large plastic tube that I plan to use to make the Shock Therapist for a possible future Titan Dweevil model and a light bulb and some test tubes for a model of the Galactic Nova from Kirby Superstar. I mean I’ve kept ground up plaster in a bag for over a decade and only just used it!

But those are for the future maybe. Next I want to finish my Man at Legs and Cannon Beetle remakes and give my Hocotate Ship a new coat of paint and a stand and maybe the Burrowing Snagret too and remake the Mamuta and-okay my future pikmin plans are basically all of it.

Smash Bros. and Politics

So, I was seeing an argument on twitter that claimed that games have become steeped in politics to the detriment of consumers.

I thought to myself, “Alright, I know a game that spans game history from 1980 to now that we can look at to determine whether games have really gotten more political with time.”

Spoiler: Only 9.375% of the franchises represented by characters in Smash Bros. avoid political themes. Games are intensely political and always have been.

Actual spoiler warning: This includes spoilers for the general plot and themes of basically every game franchise included in Smash Bros.

Trigger warning: The following essay contains references to violence, death, war, emotional abuse, racism, racial and cultural stereotyping, sexism, minority oppression, poverty, gangs, animal cruelty, religious hypocrisy, pollution, and climate change.

Mario: Traditionally avoids complex plotlines entirely (though some games break that tradition,) but even the most barebones plots have “ruler who thirsts for power is a bad person, while ruler who does not is a good person.”

Donkey Kong: The themes are all blatantly environmental. The main characters are heavily intertwined with nature, while the big bad steals natural resources, uses technology that pollutes and disturbs the local area, and evolves over time from a corrupt monarch to a gun-touting pirate to a mad scientist. The evolution of the villain’s technology in the first trilogy is sending the message that oppression evolves over time to become more sophisticated.

Zelda: Varies from game to game but ranges from “bad guy literally is transformed into a pig because he desires power” to “crisis brings grief and makes us contemplate our morality, but that should make us value the connections we have more.”

Metroid: Game revolves around a skilled and wholly independent soldier/mercenary/bounty hunter that happens to be a woman. Laced with themes of “a person who is profoundly and intentionally alone does not need to be dependent on others to define herself” and “scientific progress that is intended for the betterment of mankind can and will be used to wage war by those who seek to do harm.”

Yoshi: “Communities should help and protect even complete strangers from those who would do them harm.”

Kirby: Themes range from “greed of a ruler leaves kingdom in poverty” to “people who band together in friendship can overthrow those who possess power.”

Star Fox: Tyrannical mad scientist plans to form an oppressive empire by using technology. Do I need to explain that?

Pokémon: Treat animals as partners and friends and marvel at the wonders of the natural world. Bad guys include:

an organization that abuses animals

an organization who aims to destroy the environment

an organization that doesn’t appreciate the current world and plans to reshape it into one where emotional attachment doesn’t exist

an organization that criticizes the current state of affairs in legitimate ways to hide their real intentions of stripping the common man from their power to resist their planned dictatorship

an organization that values beauty and power above all else (criticizing the French elite specifically)

A gang that recruits desperate people who feel they don’t have a family

A supposedly humanitarian organization that is headed by a possessive and emotionally abusive mother who is obsessed with owning things, people, and animals rather than loving them.

Earthbound/Mother: Discusses complex themes about love of family, pain of loss of and rejection from that family, the trauma one suffers because of that pain, and the importance of people learning form that pain rather than using it as justification for hurting others.

F-Zero: People meet one-another and trade, develop new social ties, have intellectual exchanges, and share technology, but some begin to abuse the framework of the system that brought everyone together to make themselves lavishly wealthy. These elites then develop dangerous sports for their own entertainment that the common man is enticed to compete in to improve their societal standing.

Ice Climber: Two characters that are coded as Inuit-Yupik enjoy themselves by cooperating and competing with one another in nature. While simple, the theme of connection between people over a shared activity can’t be recognized as completely apolitical when they’re in a minority group.

Fire Emblem: A just ruler is forced into conflict with a neighboring despotic country and must balance their duty to defend their people with their understanding that it is the innocent common folk of the other country that will suffer in place of the unjust rulers who began the conflicts. The game centers around meeting new people, many of them from the other side, who themselves are multi-layered and kind, but who live difficult lives. The unjust rulers are defeated, but a greater threat then brings all the people together, despite their differences, for the common good.

Game and Watch: Man juggles, cooks, and plays games with his friends :)

Kid Icarus: An angel who has a disability that prevents him from flying must save the world when circumstances leave him as the only person capable of resisting. He succeeds and is recognized by being promoted captain of the guard for his ability, courage, and tenacity. From that point on, the support of others allows him to live his life without his mobility defining what he can and cannot do.

WarioWare: The main character (who was conceptualized because artists’ freedom to create was limited by corporate greed and its insistence on maintaining the status quo) is a greedy man who plans on creating a poor, easily made product to sell to people as a get-rich-quick scheme with complete disregard for artistic integrity.

Metal Gear: The entire series began as a political commentary on the manipulation of soldiers by politicians in the Cold War. The series delves deeply into the morality of war and the negative impact that it has on a person, as well as discussing peace, revenge, racial violence, genetic engineering, censorship, societal loss of a person’s knowledge when they die, misrepresentation of history, and generational knowledge and bias. The main character, Solid Snake, is a critical analysis of the action hero trope, and the deconstruction of his character archetype reveals his increasingly broken spirit as he comes to see his life as unavoidably entwined with conflicts and war.

Sonic: Evil scientist destroys and pollutes the environment and abuses animals in his scheme to gain power, leading to the animals themselves revolting and overthrowing him for his actions.

Pikmin: A middle-class working man who cares only about supporting his family is made to work in dangerous conditions and suffers hardships because of his company’s desire to maximize profits.

Animal Crossing: A kind community of people welcomes a stranger and helps them to build a new life with them, teaching them how to survive and thrive on their own.

Mega Man: Society has advanced to the point that robots are used in day to day jobs, and an ambitious scientist hacks into them and uses the technology to throw society into disarray, with hopes of establishing a dictatorship.

Wii Fit: Fitness trainer teaches you how to exercise and become healthier :)

Punch-Out: A poor kid from the Bronx has dreams of becoming a star athlete, and his trainer, a kind, retired black boxer, trains and inspires him to achieve his dreams of having a better life. The international opponents in the game embody both harmless and harmful societal stereotypes of their cultures. The more ridiculous the stereotypes surrounding the group, the more ridiculous the opponent becomes. Ultimately the protagonist, a multiracial kid from one of the most diverse cities in the world, achieves his dreams and is respected globally for his skill and perseverance, reflecting the ideal of cultural harmony.

Mii: Customizable avatar characters play games :)

Pac-Man: Happy man eats food as cute monsters chase him around a maze :)…in a dramatic departure from the norms of the time in the industry, making the uncommon move of advertising to women by using cute, whimsical designs and appealing to and encouraging everyone’s common experience of eating. Avoided common themes of the time like violent space shooters, racing games, and sports titles, which were meant to appeal to young men.

Xenoblade: The plot revolves around predicting where the path you’re on leads you in the future and emphasizes heavily that there is nothing in life that decides your fate for you. Aims to explain that, while hardships in life can lead you to do the wrong thing, you always have the power to change that which seems destined in your life. It condemns those who use the hardships they’ve experienced to excuse wrongdoing and explains that a person has the power to learn and grow from those hardships instead.

Duck Hunt: You’re a duck hunter shooting down ducks with your trusty companion dog :)

Street Fighter: The continuity is a mess, but basically it boils down to an evil man being defeated by the honorable and pure philosophy of the protagonist. It involves different spiritualities that are a part of different martial arts and I’m not going to pretend to be qualified to talk about the cultural implications of them, but it generally discusses the morality of violence.

Final Fantasy VII: A soldier who lost his best friend in a battle long ago joins an ecoterrorist rebellion against a corporation that is draining the life force from the planet at the expense of energy. If I have to spell out the environmental themes there any more clearly you’re a moron.

Bayonetta: Sexual witch with guns sold her soul to demons and literally makes a living killing angels that are obsessed with the impending resurrection of God, the creation of a new world, and the destruction of the current one. Heavily inspired by and critical of Christianity, with the angels being named after virtues that they lack. The five main bosses in the game are the four Cardinal Virtues of Catholicism – Courage, Temperance, Justice, and Prudence – and the final boss is God herself, a self-centered and spoiled character that demands adoration from all. Contrasts the hypocritical, power-hungry, and overzealous forces of religion with the Bayonetta’s honest and unapologetic appreciation for worldly pleasures, her confidence in her autonomy, and her quest to understand her individuality.

Splatoon: Squid kids play paintball :)…except it’s actually a post-apocalyptic world where humanity died off due to climate change and cephalopods became the dominant intelligent life on Earth.

Castlevania: Heavy religious themes debating the worth of humanity as a man treks through a haunted castle to fight Dracula, a vampiric demon who keeps reincarnating and who occasionally quotes the Bible verbatim. Most games in the series center around the theme that, even though human life is fleeting, it is precious.

Persona: High school student goes into alternate world where his darkest subconscious thoughts manifest into a “persona” tied to him. Debates philosophical topics very, very heavily and questions the meaning of identity.
