Beau is angry, no he is fucking livid. He can feel that rage pulse through his veins as he stalks into the bedroom and tears off the tie of his dress uniform and hurls it onto the bed. His jacket follows next, he strips it from his shoulders before tossing it onto the sheets. He doesn’t know where the fuck his hat is, he thinks he might have thrown it onto the kitchen table, but he has no memory of it because right now all he can focus on is the agony in his chest.

Christ, it feels like you’ve ripped his heart right out of his fucking rib cage.

You say nothing as you enter the room. You’re still clad in your JAG uniform, only you’ve kicked off your shoes, leaving them alongside the front door he suspects, the blazer probably on the back of one of the dining chairs. You stand in front of the mirror, removing the pins from your hair, each one clattering into the small dish as your hair falls loose around your shoulders.

“Why…” he chokes out the word as he looks at your reflection in the mirror. You look back at him and he knows that you’ve completely shut down. It’s an ode to your father. When a man shows his temper you disengage. The lesson was beaten into you from an early age. “Why did I have to find out from another officer that you're deploying next month?”

“I tried to tell you.” You say calmly as you pick up a cleansing pad and begin to remove your makeup. “But we’ve barely been in the same room over the last couple of days.”

Fuck, he’s forgot how cold you can be when you get like this, how concise, how rational. It makes him want to scream, to shout, to shake you but he doesn’t do any of that because even at his worst he would never lay hands on you.

“For something like this, we make the time.” He snaps before shaking his head because he knows he isn’t getting through to you. “I don’t understand, you’ve barely been back a few weeks and…”

He trails off because you’re not looking at him anymore, your gaze has dropped to bottle of toner at your dressing table, your fingers toying with the label. You’re completely out of reach to him and he can’t…

He just can’t…

“I’ll take the guest room tonight.” He says, his tone softening.

You don’t say a word as he closes the bedroom door behind him and honestly, he doesn’t expect you to.

It’s hours later that Beau hears the door to the guest bedroom click open. He can’t sleep, he just keeps reliving the moment that Vice Admiral Henderson tells him that you’re leaving as he shakes his hand and thanks him for his sacrifice.

He says nothing as you take up residence alongside of him, the mattress shifting to accommodate your weight. He keeps his back to you, his arms crossed over his chest as he stares at the closed ensuite door, hoping that you’re about to tell him that Henderson’s made a mistake. He can’t express how badly he wishes for that, how in those moments of silence he prays to a God he doesn’t believe in because right now he would do anything to strip away the anguish he feels.

“If I do this deployment.” You say into the darkness. “Henderson gives me the position in the Victim’s Legal Council when Phillips retires in six months.”

He knows what that means, you’ll be stationed here on base for at least two years. He closes his eyes because he understands what you’re doing, you’re creating a future for the two of you, one where you can exist in the same space.

Six months for two years, maybe longer…

It tastes so fucking bitter on his tongue because he’s only just got you back and now, you’re leaving all over again. He turns to face you, and you lay down beside him, your fingertips tracing over the curve of his cheek as he meets your gaze.

“I don’t want you to go.” He tells you.

“I know.” You whisper sadly, your lips brushing over his. “But I have to.”

He fucks you that night, in the guest bedroom. It’s raw and intense. There’s a wildness in him that won’t be sated as he tries to claw back some semblance of control. He’s reckless and passionate, keeping you pinned underneath him as he makes you come with his mouth, his fingers, his cock. It still isn’t enough because he’s chasing the intimacy of those six months, the moments he’s going to lose with you.

He leaves you ruined amongst the sheets, an apricot flush across your features before he gets up and heads to the en suite, locking the door behind him before turning on the shower.

This is the part he hates the most.

The disconnection.

Already he can feel himself withdrawing from you, from the marriage.

It happens every time that you’re deployed.

It’s normal the handbook tells him, a way of protecting yourself, a way of coping. He still can’t believe there’s a fucking manual for this.

He stays under the scalding hot stream for as long as he can, his palms coming to rest on the tile, his head hanging low as the water pounds onto his skull, drowning out his thoughts, his feelings and all of the other emotional shit because what he needs right now is that numbness.

It’s the only way he’s going to survive.

When he leaves the en-suite you aren’t in the bed. He doesn’t expect you to be.

You know as well as he does that right now, it’s easier to be apart than it is to be together.

I made a more updated Cornetto Trilogy/Mission Impossible/Top Gun/ER family tree so here it is but I'll also explain it too. Also shout out to @whoophoney for keeping my special interest in the cornetto trilogy alive

I can't actually get all branches on here, hence the explaination, but we'll start at the Great Grandma who started it all. She had 2 daughters, who we'll call Grandma King and Grandma Angel for the 2 family lines. Let's go down theAngel line first.

Left to right, we have Barbara Riley, with her unnamed dead husband named Father Riley, and her only son Shaun Riley, we also see her and Phillip Not-Riley because we don't actually get his surname or what Barbara's is so, yeah, any name I don't have is just not-known surname.

Next we have Gillian Bisley, nee Angel, once married to but not separated from John Bisley with their two kids Tim and Kate Bisley. We see that Tim is kind of with Daisy, and their kid "Luke" Bisley but I just don't get why they didn't name their daughter Leia?

And finally, we have Father Angel, keeper of the namesake, also without a name, and his only son Nicholas, appropriately partnered to one, Danny Butterman, yes I have put the Butterman's on here too but we know them.

Next we'll go down the King line

I'll explain the Benji and Gary situation because they have different surnames. Benji was born when his parents were together, maybe married, maybe not, but he got his dad's name. Gary was born after their dad had left when their mum told him she was pregnant again, so got his mum's surname.

Benji went to Oxford, then got scouted by an American engineering company so went there. But going with the Dead Reckoning Pt 1 idea that most people in the IMF got into some dodgy stuff and had no way out, the only thing I can imagine Benji doing is pirating stuff? He got really good at it during uni but found something he shouldn't have done and was given the choice of prison or be a tech at the IMF. As far as his family know, he's still working at that engineering company.

Benji and Ethan are together, of course, and let's go into his side of the family.

Ethan and Maverick are twin brothers, yes in canon there's 2 years between them but sshhhh, this is my family tree. They were born twins in 1962 but separated after Duke Mitchell died. Ethan was adopted by Margaret and Nathan Hunt and slowly forgot about his birth family, not because they forced him to but just because he was turning three when Duke died.

Mav forgot too and after his mum died, he went into foster care. One day, I think Benji gets Ethan a family tree thing and he finds out he has a twin brother. They meet, bond, maybe clash a little because of their values? I know they're quite similar in the way that they rebel against their respective governmental organisations but I feel like the reasons why would cause them to clash? Mav does it because that's just what he does whereas Ethan does it because he wants to save everyone.

Now onto Mav, his RIO was Goose and this is where I added more to my previous family tree.

I wanted Goose and Mark Greene to be cousins because they both have some kind of connection to the military, Goose is in the Navy, Mark's dad was a captain in the Navy and felt pressured to join it. But then I realised that if their dads were brothers, how could they have different names. So I blamed the War. I did have a headcanon that Goose's grandad was a jazz musician, but maybe that's on his mum's side.

So, Grandpapy Bradshaw, had Goose's dad then died in WW2, maybe on D-Day, which goes with the theme of Bradshaws dying young because I headcanon that Goose's dad died when he was 13 and Goose died at 26 and Carole dies at some point when Bradley's a kid. His Grandma remarries to Grandpapa Greene, has Mark's dad, then Mark's born and kind of hates Goose when he's going through his teenage angst phase he went through in Hawaii because Goose was his dad's favourite nephew because he wanted to join the Navy so much.

Mark met Jen, had Rachel, got divorced, met Elizabeth, had Ella and died. Obviously a lot more, but I wonder what he'd think of his cousin dying so young when he was still in his Navy hating part of his life.

I really want to see a Benthan wedding, with all the Cornetto Trilogy people on Benji's side, and all of the past teams for Mission Impossible and all the Top Gun gang on Ethan's. It's just a funny image and it would probably be interrupted by some bad guy trying to destroy the world and everyone's reactions would be hilarious

After the attack on General Ghorbani in Al Mazrah, it was all guns blazing.

The Al-Qatala had started fighting back in full force, and their second in command, Major Hassan Zyani, was now leading the terrorist group.

It had been almost impossible to keep tabs on him, the group clearly taking extreme precautions to protect their new leader. 

That's where you came in.

Expert at stealth and covert ops, you and your team were the ones to call for sneaking through abandoned camps and gathering intel. The Echo 6 team was unmatched, and you their fearless leader.

That's all this was. 

Laswell had provided you with as much information as she possibly could. The base camp in question was hidden within the trees that covered the mountains on the border of Russia and Kazakhstan, after satellite images picked up on movement there.

The base consisted of a warehouse, overlooked by a small watchtower with an office. Information from troops on the ground there already had confirmed that the place was empty, so you and the team would be going in solo.

Shadow Company would be watching from the skies, ready to engage should you need it and maintaining overwatch for any threat that may emerge.

Not that you were nervous, it'd been a long time since you'd felt anxiety over a mission, but knowing your fiancé would be watching over you always gave you that sense of protection and support.

It brought a smile to your face, knowing Phillip Graves had your back.

You were safe when he was around, and he made damn-well sure you knew it.

Laswell dismissed the meeting quickly, eager for everyone to get ready and begin. It still amazed you how she had so many safe houses dotted all over the globe. No matter where the mission was, there was always a base for briefing and preparations.

The woman was endlessly resourceful.

Standing on the tarmac as Shadows buzzed around you, making the final checks on the helo, you played with your tac-vest, tugging on the Velcro holding the body cam to your chest.

Shepherd had insisted that every operation in connection to AQ be recorded after what happened with the Russian PMCs nine months before.

"You ready, Lt?"

You turned to face the voice, finding Stevens adjusting his own cam as he approached you.

"Piece of cake, Stevens," you smiled under the mask, "Remember, quick in and out, Laswell just wants some intel."

Turning from him briefly to pick up your knives from the crate, you shoved two of them into their holsters, keeping the third twirling through your fingers.

"That why you don't have your gun?" the brunette smirked back at you.

"You know me, don't need a gun to do some damage."

"Ain't that the truth!" Orlando spoke as he approached the two of you, his arm wound tightly around Bradshaw's waist, "Y'all ready?"

The sight made your heart swell; love was all around you, and the life you'd built here was so fulfilling, you couldn't see what John had been so worried about.

"Let's do this."

With one last briefing from Laswell, everyone was piled onto the Shadow Company helo for the short ride to the LZ, silence falling amongst the bodies in the carrier.

You glanced around, taking in the faces of your team.

Stevens had his palm open, a small polaroid of his family looking back at him. He'd not seen his little boy or his wife for nearly three months, and you knew it was killing him slowly.

Orlando and Bradshaw were cosied up together - they'd not been able to stray too far away since their relationship went official.

Javier was sat on your right, while Graves sat on your left, thumb running over your hand, grazing the diamond on your finger affectionately.

A frown fell on your lips...something wasn't right. He knew the agreement, the risks. He knew not to show affection like this around the troops - the same reason he knew you wore the mask.

Protection.

Something just wasn't right. 

Maybe it was the wedding...cold feet, perhaps? Anxiety? Too much stress for the commander of a PMC group?

You should have figured as much when he came fumbling through the door to your tent as you got dressed before heading to the briefing.

"Baby..." he breathed, crossing the room swiftly to you and collecting your hands in his.

You'd been stunned to silence from the way he'd burst into the room, not yet answering him and staring with wide eyes and a raised brow.

"You know I love you, right?" he spoke, placing a hand on your cheek.

You smiled, letting out a small laugh, "Of course I do, I love you too. What's goin' on?"

"I just need you to remember that, alright, darlin'?"

"Phillip, you're kinda scaring me-"

He hushed you by placing his lips on yours, pulling your body against his tightly. The sudden contact made you gasp, but soon you felt yourself leaning into the familiarity of him. You let Graves hold you close, his hands roaming your body as yours wound their way up into his hair, before pulling away breathlessly.

"What was that for?"

You were panting, the two of you feeling the heat of reddened cheeks, noses brushing together.

"Can't I give my gorgeous ass fiancée a kiss before work?" he smirked.

"You absolutely can, but are you okay? If something is bothering you then please just-"

"I'm good, baby. I'm good."

He wasn't.

You'd known the man for four years, been dating for three, engaged for one of those. You liked to think you knew Phillip Graves well enough to know that something just wasn't right. 

Before you could press the issue quietly, he released your hand, and stood.

He shot a small smile at you before leaving, heading back up into the cockpit of the helo. You watched him leave, a solemn expression under the mask as the back of him disappeared from view.

Maybe war was no place for love.

You could lose each other every time you went out, and the thought was suffocating. You couldn't imagine ever losing someone you love again, not after losing both of your parents so young.

You missed John. 

You missed Alex. 

They were your only family now, and you couldn't bear thought of either of them losing you, either.

With quick nods between your team, the five of you dropped the short distance from the helo, and began weaving your way through the trees, weapons drawn and steps silent.

It didn't take long for you to reach the treeline, the watchtower and warehouse coming into view.

"Hold back, overwatch scanning." Graves' voice floated over comms.

"Copy, Shadow-1." you replied in a low whisper. "In position for your call."

You glanced to the side of you, seeing the rest of your team in position to make way into the warehouse, while you were to head to the watchtower. Stevens met your eye, sending a nod your way, which you returned.

"Shadow-1 to Reaper, you are clear for engage."

"Solid." you responded, "Alright guys, remember this is recon, in and out, no stress, copy?"

"Loud and clear, Lt." Orlando responded.

You shuffled forward to get a better view of the warehouse, spotting two entrances. Your team moved to match your pace, eyes forward and alert.

"Two exits," you spoke, "Orlando, Trace- take rear side. Stevens, Bradshaw- you're on front."

Their voices floated back to you over the radio, each of them confirming your orders before executing, expertly moving through the brush almost silently.

You climbed the wooden stairs to the top of the tower in seconds, knife poised ready for any threat that could emerge as you pushed the door open; only to be met with an empty room, lit by a dim white lamp.

Clearly, the place hadn't been empty for long, and whoever left did so in a hurry.

Hundreds of papers, varying in size and colour, were strewn all over the room. Piles of more were stacked high.

Whatever this place was, it must have been important.

The electronics in the room were smashed, shattered, broken...almost as if someone wanted to destroy any worthy evidence before, well, someone like you could get your hands on it.

"Stevens, Reaper. Ground floor clear, breaching to first floor."

"Copy, Stevens. Look for any unbroken tech, keep an eye out for any traps." 

"Yes, ma'am."

"Stop calling me that." You chuckled, "You know I hate it."

You quickly got to work, dropping to your hands and knees and sifting through the mound of documents, coming up completely empty. Old blueprints for the warehouse, old receipts for materials.

Nothing suspicious at all.

Nothing to indicate the AQ's next move, intel on Hassan's whereabouts, or who they may be working with.

Frustrations grew within you. It was like every time you got close to a lead, something would get in the way, and somehow, the AQ were always one step ahead.

It was as if they knew you'd be coming.

"Echo 6-2 to Actual, there's nothing but old blueprints and receipts here." you spoke, pushing the papers around with your gloved hands.

"Have a sniff around, Reaper, there's gotta be something." Laswell replied.

You moved to the desk situated in front of the large window, glancing up as the beams of the torches from your team moved around the building ahead. You smiled under the mask, happy to see them okay.

Once again, your search of the desk came up empty, only finding the same shit that you found across the floor.

"Shadow-1 to Reaper...we're picking up something unknown on the radar, keep your eyes open, baby."

You rolled your eyes, but the blush on your cheeks could not be avoided as you took a quick scan of your surroundings, "I don't see anything yet, think I'm good. What have I told you about calling me that on the job, Graves?"

"Can't help it, need to let these other clowns know who you belong to."

Shaking your head, you bit your tongue, opting not to say anything else before you risked your professionalism. 

You continued to listen to your team communicate in the building ahead of you as you sifted through the mounds of scattered papers and broken technology.

"I hate that they have to send you in there." Graves sighed, "I would very much like it if my fiancée stayed in one piece."

Your heart swelled at his words. It was nice to hear that someone loved you as much as you loved them, that they wanted you safe.

But your job had meaning, it brought you a purpose in life.

"Yeah, but a wise man once told me that we get dirty, and the world stays clean. I don't mind paying that price." You spoke. 

"Right, and who told you that nonsense?"

You were silent for a moment, before giggling, "That would be my brother."

It had been well over four months since you last saw John in person, and three weeks since you last heard his voice over a cracked, signal-dropping call between missions. To say you missed him was an understatement.

But carrying him in your thoughts wherever you went would have to be enough.

"Wise, old, Captain Price," Graves laughed with you, "He always say shit like that?"

"Careful, Phillip, in less than a year he'll be your brother-in-law."

"And what an honour it'll be, baby. Stay sharp."

"Copy that." you smiled.

Update re: Joker Folie A Deux. (Why I think people didn´t like it; and how current Hollywood directors are behind the curve.)

And indeed, although the Guardian reviewer Peter Bradshaw https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/sep/04/joker-folie-a-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-and-lady-gaga-musical-spirals-out-of-tune

actually liked it better than did Maher of the Times, the Guardian and other publications are now publishing a slew of articles, as to how this movie is losing money hand over fist ($200k at the box office), and their only hope is to recoup it on streaming!

Well: I suppose that's really ALL that counts, in Hollywood! 😏

As one or two have commented, I really don't see how they can have spent so much on a movie, without action scenes or special effects.

But the Guardian Hollywood writer seems to think it bombed, largely because it rubbed comic book fans, "an important sector of the market", "up the wrong way"..

And this Guardian writer Andrew Pulver reckons it "scolds the audience". Though I don't see how. With a musical? 🙄 With a musical, you can only ANNOY the audience, by making it flat and unentertaining. (If however you make it entertaining, you get the audience on your side. 🙂) And this is obviously no Little Shop Of Horrors…

Well.. You see, I believe the FIRST Phillips movie did rub fans of the characters up the wrong way too, to an extent! 😏 Not everybody liked it. If you look back in time to various contemporary YouTube parodies of movie 1, you can see that a lot of them parody the Phoenix Joker as weak! One I saw even had him falling from top to bottom of those concrete steps! (Though of course he didn't, in the movie!)

Well - again, this Lokean believes this negative box-office result vindicates her theories! And proves that I have the answer! 🙂

People don't WANT an incompetent, clumsy, sad-sack antihero. They want an old-time "rags to riches" story! I BELIEVE! (Even if it has certain ironic touches.)

I also think that a story told by a bourgeois director in which he is basically saying that a working-class rebel of whichever stamp, needs must fail, is ALSO not these days going to be popular. 😏

Yes. Pulver commented: "The core audience [which is WHO, one wonders, according to Pulver? JUST the comic book fans? But for a Hollywood movie to succeed, it has to appeal to more than just fans of the novel or comic book!] received the message that not only is the film very different from the first film, but also that people liked the first Joker for the wrong reasons."

And COULD a LOT of them have liked it, not for conventional superhero movie fan reasons (after all, that was precisely what Joker wasn't) but because they saw the first film as a rare example of "the underdog getting some of his own back", genre? 😄😄

Michael Moore had his finger on the pulse of why the first movie succeeded. (Michael Moore usually does! 🙂)

The public - comics fans included, I do believe - would have far preferred a story in which Arthur Fleck the "Joker", however mentally disturbed he is or isn't, developed into a HERO! In which he grew into a much stronger character. Aided and drawn onwards and upwards, one would think, by his love for the character Harley Quinn. And hers for him. Pity, then, that in this, she is a duplicitous COW, who goes by the dull soubriquet "Lee", not "Harley". 😏

One supposes though that SOME diehard comic bookers would want Phoenix's Joker to develop either into the evil genocidal villain he is in some of the modern comics 🤮, or into the even more recognisable Gotham-destroying terrorist of Nolan's The Dark Knight 🙄.

This just proves, however, that such people are stupid! 😄 And I know that no Neopagan would go in for such obvious Christian right-wing ideological fantasies, which we see right through!

We have something better! (And something we might even be able to sell to the male incel comic bookers, because it is FAR from wimpy! And it offers the underdog a bit of HOPE.)

I DO believe, that a writer such as myself, could and would manage to sell to the public who are tired of wimpy Jokers, and "failure stories", and all such dull negativity, a fantasy that I have already outlined in my previous essay above, and that is far more folksy, and far more Pagan both. ☺️

That would be the rags-to-riches tale of a Trickster Hero! 👍

THAT the public would now buy and lap up, I'll stake my best idol of Loki on it! 🙂😄👍

P.S. Very recent events - much more recent than my writing any of these reviews/musings - have I think proved, that vast numbers of the US public are perfectly prepared to support rebels against the status quo - in real life! Even if in real life, ¨the system¨ turns those rebels into martyrs. What is important to the public, is that they achieve something, however symbolic. Violently symbolic. A bit of ¨own-backery¨, as one might say! 😏

I´m not sure that that was precisely what I was talking about in my essays - but I think we can all see, the way that the public mood is going, and that ¨conventional¨ ideas on the part of directors - like wasn´t Phillips trying to quote some Scorsesean/Roman Catholic bit of ¨moralism¨, at the end of Folie A Deux, according to what I read on Wikipedia - just don´t cut the mustard any more.

People want ¨the terrorist" to win. As long as he is the right kind of terrorist! 😏

As for Tricksters - well - this Lokean will let you all into something! 😄😄😄 The great thing about them, is that they tend to get away with it! 😄 In the long run, they do! (Yeah: so Christians said Loki didn´t. But Christians lie: and they have the wrong cosmological outlook anyway!)
