But our citizenship is in heaven
Daily Verse Reading – Philippians 3:17-4:1 17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in…

Day 4
August 15, 2024
Dear friend,
Habits seem harder and harder to break. Which makes sense. The older I get, the more I become what I've been. The longer I've been doing the same things again and again and again, the deeper the patterns impress upon my heart. The dirt trails I have walked for three decades are now packed earth, paved road, highways.
But just because it's more difficult doesn't mean I should stop trying. Sin habits are still habits. I do them without thinking; they are so ingrained into my being and my soul. And yet, there's the still, small voice, the itty-bitty truth drowned out by routine... Think. Start thinking.
Think about who you are––beloved, saved, sanctified, adopted, made new.
Think about whose you are––child of the king, purchased and pardoned for a purpose, set apart for infinite glory and joy.
Think about why you continue to be––to glory in and enjoy a good God, to know and be known by Him, to reign with Him and be His bride, His body, His child (metaphors for infinite truths).
Think about where you are headed––eternal joy, seeing Jesus face to face.
Think about how you will get there––by faith... and through many dangers, toils, and snares... and carried along by grace and truth and divine power.
And as you think of these things, your affections might shift, even minutely, off course of where they were pushing your soul. And maybe the fires of lust get swallowed up in greater, stronger, divinely directed conflagrations.
Take some Philippians 4:8 pills and let them shape you a la Romans 12:1-2. Eat that bread of the Word and digest it thoroughly and soak in it (Psalm 1:1-3) and absorb every nutrient you can obtain (Psalm 119:11) and wield it powerfully (Ephesians 6:17) against the lies that have shaped you for years. But do it one day at a time, one step at a time, one leg at a time, one breath at a time (Philippians 3:13-14).
And you'll get there, friend.
And I struggle alongside you. It's tough out here. But we have infinite hope in an infinite Savior.
With affection,
Your brother

Sons of Thunder -- Followers of Christ Filled with Anger

James and John had been nicknamed by Jesus as “sons of thunder.” (Mark 3:17) From a study of their character, you might…

God's Word Sown on the Soil of Fertile Hearts, Brings Forth Much Fruit
Jesus explains the parable of the sower and his seed:
Luke 8:11-18 "The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they shall believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience. No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him."

The Lord Is My Shepherd A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. — Psalm 23 | English Standard Version (ESV) The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. Philippians 3:8-11 (FBV). [8] “Truly, I count everything as loss in exchange for the incredible benefit I've gained through knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I've thrown away all these things for him, and consider them trash, so that I might gain Christ. [9] I want to be found in him, not being right because of what I've done, or what the law requires, but made right through confidence in Christ, set right by God through trusting in him. [10] I want to really know him, and the power of his resurrection—to take part in his suffering and become like him in his death, [11] so that somehow I might be part of the resurrection from the dead!”
“Handling Difficult Circumstances” By In Touch Ministries:“Focus on Jesus instead of your difficulties—He will provide deliverance, comfort, and peace.”
“The apostle Paul understood how to handle tough situations. Even while he was in prison, he kept his eyes on Christ. Therefore, despite being in chains, he was able to celebrate the Lord’s work in his life. In fact, the epistle he wrote from jail to the Philippians was filled with rejoicing and praise (Philippians 1:18; Philippians 2:18; Philippians 3:1).
Focusing on Christ is neither a natural reaction nor an easy one. Our instinct is to dwell on the circumstance at hand, searching for solutions or stewing over the pain and difficulty. As a result, troubles can look scary and overwhelming.
However, fear and defeat can’t live long in a heart that trusts the Lord. That’s not to say you’ll forget what you’re going through, but you can choose to dwell on God’s provision and care instead. He is our Deliverer (2 Corinthians 1:10), Healer (Jeremiah 17:14), and Guide (Psalm 23:3). The believer who lays claim to divine promises discovers that God pushes back negative emotions and replaces them with hope, confidence, and contentment. This doesn’t mean you’ll be happy about a difficult situation, but you can be satisfied that God is in control and working things for your good.
Focus on Christ instead of your circumstances—God will give comfort and bring you through the trial. Then you’ll be ready to answer Paul’s call to “rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).

Reliance
Dear God,
I acknowledge that every good thing in my life—my breath, my strength, my possessions—comes from You. As James 1:17 reminds us, every good gift is from You, the Father of lights. I trust that You are the source of all that I need.
Help me to rely on You completely, not leaning on my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6), but trusting that You will provide for me, as Philippians 4:19 promises. In times of difficulty or uncertainty, I commit my way to You, knowing that You will act on my behalf (Psalm 37:5).
I desire to see Your power at work in my life, knowing that You are able to do more than I could ever ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20-21). Use me, Lord, to bring Your light to the world and to reflect Your love and grace in all that I do.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Heaven and Earth Come Together in Christ
Preface for Whole Bible Study
The New Testament's view of the universe is really similar to that of the Hebrew Bible. Christ's message was that he was joining Heaven, the space of humanity, with himself. Humans are to partner with Christ in bringing Heaven to Earth by contributing to human flourishing.
New Testament Views
The Gospel of Matthew
Matthew 4:8 “a high mountain” from which Christ can see all the kingdoms of the Earth
Matthew 4:17 Kingdom of Heaven has come near
Matthew 6:9-10 The Lord’s prayer, God’s Kingdom/will here on Earth as it is in Heaven
Matthew 11:23 Capernaum not exalted up to Heaven but going down to Sheol/Hades
Matthew 12:39-40 Sign of Jonah, belly of whale // “heart of the Earth”
Matthew 12:42 Queen of the South comes “from the ends of the Earth”
Matthew 28:16-20 On a mountain, the risen Christ says, “all authority in Heaven and on Earth belongs to me”

The Letters of Paul
Philippians 2:9-10: The exalted Christ was raised high, so every knee will bow “in Heaven, on Earth, and under the Earth.”
Ephesians 1:19-22: Christ’s resurrection exalted him to “sit at his right hand in the heavenly places.”
Ephesians 2:1-7:  We have been raised from the dead and “raised up and seated with him in the heavenly places.”
2 Corinthians 12:1-4: Paul talks about “a guy I know” (himself) who had a vision and apocalypse where he ascended up to the “third Heaven.”
The Book of Revelation
Revelation 21:1-3:  A new Heaven and Earth, a city descending from Heaven (presumably the new one coming to a new Earth), but it’s called a tabernacle.
Revelation 21:10: The city coming down again, described as a temple-Jerusalem-garden-throne of God
What is going on in these passages???
Over time, it became clear that the authors of the Hebrew Bible, Christ, and the apostles imagined a universe that is very different from our modern conception of the universe.
It’s crucial to understand the Bible on its own terms, which may require unlearning and relearning the biblical conception of the cosmos, that is, Heaven and Earth.

Do not allow other people's actions to determine your happiness
Romans 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
John 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Let the joy of the Lord be your strength
Nemamiah 8:10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; (for the joy of the LORD is your strength).
Our Joy comes from the Lord
Psalm 126:3 The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.
Psalm 100:1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.100:3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.100:5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
John 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
