“DESTITUTE COUPLE ADOPT CHILDREN,” Toronto Star. March 7, 1933. Page 1. ---- Poverty Likes Companionship, Decides Chief --- Special to The Star Hamilton, March 7. - Poverty likes companionship, according to Chief Constable Clark, superintendent of the Children's Aid Society, who yesterday investigated eviction of a county family from their farm home. They apparently had no shelter available when the landlord evicted them. To his surprise he found that, although the couple were penniless and on relief they recently informally adopted two young children. They were determined to keep the youngsters, but Chief Clark decided they must be returned to their original homes. Temporary shelter was provided for the family.

Building a Better World Through Child Sponsorship
I Invite You to Build a Legacy of Hope and Transformation Today I felt immense happiness this weekend, as one of my adult children decided to sponsor a child. He introduced us to the child’s family in Africa, and we tried to connect over WhatsApp.  Though they couldn’t speak English, we waved and communicated through body language, sharing smiles and laughter across the screen.  My…

Editorial Roundup: Georgia
Dalton Daily Citizen. August 16, 2023. Editorial: Be mindful of charity scams As we watch the truly devastating impact of the wildfires that have hit parts of Hawaii, many of us may feel a need to respond with a call to action. The images have implored many of us to find ways to help, even in some small way. And although we are seeking ways to help out, please be mindful and do some research…

"SAVING THE BABIES OF TORONTO'S POOR," Toronto Weekly Star. August 10, 1912. Page 17. --- ABOUT a month ago a new agent for lowering the death rate of infants was started at the University Settlement, 4675 Adelaide west, in the Rest Station, a tent for babies.
Behind old St. John's Church on Portland street is this tent with its big label "Babies' Rest Station." It isn't that the babies exert themselves so much or work so hard that they need a rest, but it is that these little morsels of humanity are too tiny to be sent away by the Fresh Air Fund, and, living in crowded quarters and unwholesome surroundings, have but a poor chance of life. Fresh air and wholesome food are what the baby must have, along with a fair amount of attention. We say "fair" amount, for the child is not likely to suffer from that bane of the rich baby - too much and too continuous attention.
This Rest Station, which is something of a novelty in Toronto, is the joint undertaking of the St. John's Church and the University Settlement, and is entirely free to the mothers who bring their babies there. It is a big tent equipped with cots, where a nurse is always in charge.
At the milk station of the Settlement the mother can procure the baby's food, and should it be sick, she can take it to the clinic on a Thursday to find out how to treat it. The nurse, trained in the Children's Hospital, is always there to advise the mother, and more than that, to give her an object lesson in the proper care of it, for many of its ailments are mainly due to ignorance and carelessness. From nine in the morning to five in the evening the baby is breathing fresh air, well fed, well sheltered, and comfortable, while the busy mother can continue her work, coming back again in the afternoon to feed it. About fifteen mothers are gladly availing themselves of the opportunity, and it is hoped that similar rest stations may, in time, be opened in other parts of the city.
It has been estimated that $12 a week will pay the expense of the undertaking, including cost of tent and nurse. The Star Fresh Air Fund is aiding the undertaking, and it is hoped that further funds will be received to continue it until the close of the season on September first.
