Phil Baines, who has died aged 65 of multiple system atrophy, was one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British graphic design. His work included books, posters, art catalogues and lettering for three important London monuments – the memorial to the Indian Ocean tsunami in the grounds of the Natural History Museum and the 7 July memorials in Hyde Park and Tavistock Square, commemorating the victims of the 2005 London bombings. These projects point to Baines’s defining attributes: a scholarly appreciation of letterforms, a deep-rooted respect for materials and a love of collaboration.
Such attributes can also be seen in Baines’s cover designs for the Penguin Great Ideas series (2004-20), works by “great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries” that gave him a canvas on which to display his typographic philosophy. The Saint Augustine – Confessions of a Sinner cover, for instance, uses ancient ecclesiastical letterforms and yet looks superbly modern. For Chuang Tzu — The Tao of Nature, Baines arranged letters to suggest a butterfly in flight. David Pearson, one of two art directors for the series, described how his “often-oblique approach gave the series a crucial added dimension”.
Born in Kendal, Cumbria, Phil was one of the three children of Martin Baines, a construction contract manager, and Joan (nee Quarmby), a horticulturalist. Growing up in a Roman Catholic household, he began studies for the priesthood at Ushaw College, County Durham. During the holidays from Ushaw he worked at the Guild of Lakeland Craftsmen, Windermere, and from there his interest and confidence in art grew.
At the start of his fourth year, he quit Ushaw, and in 1980 began a year’s study on the foundation course at Cumbria College of Art and Design. In 1982 he moved to London and enrolled on the graphic design course at St Martin’s School of Art (now Central Saint Martins), where he met Jackie Warner, whom he married in 1989, and where he was among a talented cohort, many of whom went on to study, as he did, at the Royal College of Art.
Richard Doust, then leader of the first-year course at St Martins, recalled the portfolio Baines submitted for admission: “I was so excited … I was sure he was going to be someone very special. He quickly established his individuality. He made typography and particularly letterpress his own territory.”
Baines was fiercely individual – he did not join schools of thought or align himself with fashionable camps. Instead, he built a creative practice based on his belief in the “humanist” qualities of the English typographic tradition.
His contemporaries were using the computer to bring a new complexity to graphic communication. Smart software allowed for the overlapping and interweaving of text in ways that echoed the ecclesiastical manuscripts that Baines admired so much. He was no Luddite, and used the computer himself, yet his work invariably retained an element of the handmade.
Paradoxically, his work was greatly admired by the new generation of digital designers. Neville Brody, for instance, included Baines’s work in his experimental typography publication FUSE, produced to demonstrate the malleability of the new digital typography. Baines’s work does not look out of place among the other contributors, many of them American typography radicals whose multi-layered layouts were driven by modish theories of deconstruction and poststructuralism.
In 1988 he returned to Central Saint Martins (CSM), as part of the faculty. In staff meetings his willingness to say the unsayable was a frequent cause for consternation among colleagues. To his students he preached a doctrine of “object-based learning”, a typically contrarian notion in the age of screen-based and virtual graphic design. He was appointed a professor in 2006 and retired in 2020 as emeritus professor.
Despite his commitment to teaching, Baines did not give up his work for clients. As well as designing books for leading publishers, he worked for the Crafts Council and the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, and designed the signage for CSM’s King’s Cross campus. He designed exhibition catalogues for Matt’s Gallery, south-west London, relishing the creative three-way collaboration that existed between the gallery’s director, Robin Klassnik, exhibiting artists and himself.
He wrote books that contributed to the understanding of visual communication: Type & Typography (with Andrew Haslam, 2002), Signs: Lettering in the Environment (with Catherine Dixon, 2003) and Penguin by Design: A Cover Story 1935-2005 (2005), the last of which helped establish Penguin cover art as one of the most important bodies of graphic art in British design history.
With Dixon, he co-curated the Central Lettering Record, an archive of typographic history housed at CSM, and in November 2023 his work was celebrated in an exhibition, Extol: Phil Baines Celebrating Letters, at the Lethaby gallery, CSM. He was appointed as the Royal Mint advisory committee’s lettering expert in 2016, and reappointed in 2021 to advise on the integration of lettering on new coins and medals, with consideration given to special issues and the accession of King Charles to the throne. For this work, in 2023 he was awarded the Coronation medal.
Baines was an enthusiastic runner and cyclist, and loved music, especially the Manchester post-punk band the Fall. He was a collector of signs, lettering, and railwayana, and built his own studios at his home in Willesden Green, north-west London. A few years before his retirement he moved to Great Paxton, Cambridgeshire, where he took up bellringing.
He is survived by Jackie and their two daughters, Beth and Felicity, and by his father.

Born in Newtonmore on December 19th 1947, Bass player and songwriter James Stewart “Jimmy” Bain.
Jimmy Bain was a prolific guitarist on the rock music circuit, he may not be well known to most Scots but this man played with some of the all time greats including Phil Lynott, Gary Moore, Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore, the bands he was involved with, Rainbow, Dio, The Scorpions and Thin Lizzie.
Bain also worked with Kate Bush on her album the Dreaming. Probably Bains most famous song is one he co wrote with Phil Lynott “Old Town” The song was the first to be played on Irish legal Independent Radio. It was also the first song played by Dublin’s Capital Radio 104.4 on its launch on 20 July 1989.
In January 2015 Jimmy’s band Last In Line were supporting Def Leppard “Hysteria on the High Seas” cruise, he was found dead in his cabin on the boat, he was said to have been battling pneumonia beforehand but a post mortem gave the cause of death as lung cancer, this had not been diagnosed, the video here you can see he does look ill, and in my opinion, in pain, but like a true Rocker he played on.
He died sometime through the night after this performance.

Phil Collins' Against All Odds is such a MasterGuide (Bain/Dallas) song, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
How can I just let you walk away?/Just let you leave without a trace/ When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh/You're the only one who really knew me at all...
Bain and Dallas have been secretly meeting and, well, fell in love. Became fuck buddies. Take your pick. Most likely, they fell in love whilst desperately trying to hide that fact from one another - no no, this wasn't love, this was - this was two equally paranoid men helping each other out. They were friends with benefits.
Bain is the one who calls it off. He realises he can't watch Dallas go on heists anymore - not when he needs him. He needs him to survive and would do anything to ensure his survival - even if it meant leaving the rest of the crew behind, and Bain knew that wasn't right. It didn't sit right with him, at all.
That being said, it isn't easy on either of them. They both understand, sure. They both agree it's for the best and part amicably. Nevertheless...
How can you just walk away from me?/When all I can do is watch you leave/'Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears/You're the only one who really knew me at all...
I wish I could just make you turn around/Turn around and see me cry There's so much I need to say to you/So many reasons why/You're the only one who really knew me at all...
Dallas knew he was in way too deep. Could he stop himself? Absolutely not. He'd been this way when he was in the mob, too - thinking he could do it all and failing spectacularly, crashing and burning into a chaotic mess where he nearly died, would have died - but the pain of being told it was over, it needed to end - he understood, agreed even - but he grieved the life he wanted them to have, knew they would never have - wanted Bain to see the agony on his face, knowing full-well he knew without needing to look - because they were that entwined.
And when Bain dies - well, it becomes even more tragic, doesn't it?
Take a good look at me now/'Cause I'll still be standing here/And you comin' back to me is against all odds
Dallas won't ever truly recover. A gaping hole has been torn into the fabric of his being, and he may stuff it with as much tear-stained wadding as he liked - but he would always be beyond repair - ripped - without Bain.

It's not how I wanted the chapter to go towards the end but due to mental health it is what it is
Trigger warning ⚠️⚠️ contains stronge language ⚠️⚠️
Chapter 6
Jake took MC home once they had gotten back home MC couldn't control her urges any longer. She pushed Jake up against the wall and kissed him deep her hands found their way under his hoodie. Jake's hands ran through MCs hair and the heat between them was rising. MC grabbed Jake's hand and pulled him towards her bedroom clothes flying off as they went.
After a few hours later MC and Jake both lay on the bed catching their breath Jake intertwined their hands. MC turned to face Jake still holding hands with each other.
Jake: MC, I know this might sound stupid but I need to ask you, will you be my forever?
MC: Of course I will Jake but only if you will be my forever too?
Jake: I can't say no to such a beautiful women
Just as they were about to share a kiss MCs phone buzzed, she leaned over to check who it was. It was Phil sending her another message begging her to meet up with him as he was in trouble.
Phil: MC please I am begging you I need your help so bad right now, I am in trouble
MC: why should I care if your in trouble we are not together anymore
Phil: please!!! This is important MC I'm in trouble with my taxes
MC: So what? You made your bed now lie in it I'm busy fucking my boyfriend
MC put her phone down and grabbed hold of Jake again, in a fit of passion their hands were all over each other. Later that afternoon after their intense activities MC and Jake were making something to eat when there was a knock at the door.
MC went to answer and the two officers from the other day, they had come back to let us know about the investigation. MC stood tomome side and let the officers in.
Officer Baine: good afternoon MC, Jake we are here about Phil
MC: Okay, just tell us when the court date is, we will be there but I promise we will be putting up one hell of a fight.
Officer Grant: Yes we are here about that but not how you think, the charges against you and Jake have been dropped
Jake: What!!! But now?
Officer Baine: while we were investigating Mr Hawkins we discovered that he was being investigated by another team for tax fraud
Officer Grant: we now know the whole thing was a pack of lies, you will not have anymore problems from him
MC wasn't quite sure what to think. She knew there wasn't anything good about Phil but to dodge his taxes that was massive. After Jake had shown the officers out he came back and gave MC a hug.
A few weeks had gone by, Phil had been arrested for tax fraud, he was still awaiting his court date. Jake's shop was busier than ever, business had really picked up, everyone recommended him and always left positive reviews.
MCs POV
The group chat had blown up again and it had been quiet for ages, news started pouring in saying Hannah had gone into labor. I fought to hold back from saying anything but it was becoming harder and harder.
Lilly was begging me to help, why I don't know what the hell does she really want me to do, ride in on a horse and say everything is going to be okay.
I couldn't hold back any longer and decided to make one comment and I would be logging off from the chat.
MC: Lilly what the hell do you want me to do? I am not getting involved in this shit, not after what Hannah and Phil did to me. Leave me alone and stop sending me messages. I am not interested in what's going on, okay!!.
MC offline
MC put her phone back in her pocket and went back to work, lost in what she was doing. She didn't notice that Jake had closed the shop for the day she came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.
She could smell his scent. It was so intoxicating it made her smile as she held his hands. Jake took her hand and gave her a hug. He could see that she was stressed with everything going on.
Jake: It's going to be okay
MC: it doesn't seem like it, the group chat blew up before Lilly begging me for help just because Hannah had gone into labor
Jake: What does she want you to do?
MC: I don't know, I just told her to leave me alone and logged off
Jake: come on, let's go upstairs and I'll make us some dinner
MC: your so sweet, I love you
MC stopped in her tracks. They had never said I love you to each other yet, her whole body froze not knowing what to do or say.
MC: Jake, I..I…
Jake: I love you to MC
He walked back over to her with a smile on his face and kissed her deep wrapping their arms around each other.
The next morning MC and Jake had decided to have a lazy day. It was Sunday so they just stayed cuddled up together watching Netflix. While MC was picking another movie MC phone rang it was Lilly.
Jake: let me answer you keep looking for a movie
Jake picked up the phone and answered
Jake: Hello Lilly what's up?
Hannah: Jake? Is MC there?
Jake: What do you want?
Lilly: It's Hannah, she's having to raise the baby all on her own she needs MCs help
Jake: not a chance Lilly, don't you get what your sister did to her? Hannah slept with Phil behind MCs back
Lilly: I know, but I was hoping
Jake: Lilly stop calling if Hannah needs help you help her your sister, or better yet just get a nanny that way you can both go back to being the stuck up snobs you both are.
Before Lilly could say anything Jake ended the call and went back to MC who had found a movie to watch.
MC: thank you Jake, that was amazing
Jake: your welcome
MC: You know, I've got a much better idea come on
MC grabbed Jake's hand and led him into the bedroom, they didn't come back out till it was time to make dinner. It was MCs turn to make dinner tonight so she made a homemade lasagne with garlic bread. Jake had lit some candles and had a bottle of wine ready to pour into the glasses.

This is the best part of my life right here. You see his arms and how they're bulky and when he makes a muscle for some reason it's not as big in diameter but by mass it's like a third or so a quarter bigger than the muscle that's the same diameter at the biggest tip point now I don't think this is right but this is what he would look like. It says it looks like the inside of a stadium or something but someone might have an old photo of themselves and he thinks it's Paul a and that's what it is he says watch out and he says how did you get that look and he goes he says oh no but really that's Trump over there and that's fine. And yeah there's a lot of beef and it's a mix and he's eating beef on purpose for that purpose. So we see that he would be like this size it's a primo costume no you can't wear this particular bane outfit but if you imagine the other one he would look pretty cool
Uncle Phil he's right too if you're doing weightlifting stuff you should put a weeder bulk or wheater bulk up but both is better and it's for a real simple reason
Yeah you can't tell what the hell you're getting. These days is terrible. I'm going to do that on mine it'll work
Brad
I'm going to do it on mine too everybody will start doing it it's a good idea
Tommy f
Here's the effect this is what I hoped for but I'm a food guy
Uncle Phil
Okay you been targeted but no we actually need you I'm not the food guy people have skills I do certain things and you said it my job is massively important I keep treating him bad and other people and I should stop but this is going to get much worse now the insist on holding me or some do and he repeats some do it and it's cuz you took their stuff oh okay had the factories and gave them no out that's pretty bad it's wrong I know now because of Mac proper
Trump and I like this version but he's right he can't wear it he can wear the original which is what his father and mother want him to wear
This is about exactly how big you'd be he would be in how he would look and it'll be the original costume not Arkham asylum and he kind of wants to wear a part of that and it's not a bad idea the other one is like all tights. But his arms will be big like this and his chest and his legs and people would say wow it's actually pain but he's not bulky enough there's other characters that match pretty much exactly but this one is one of his favorites and you'd have a mask on and people want that
Vital and goddess wife yeah the name is still messed up
We have characters that he could do I don't suggest a couple
Thor Freya
I like the original bane and I could wear regular pants and boots and it would be looked at more like bain possibly and lean away from wrestling a little
Zues good very good excellent Hera
It's all fun and games until someone gets in there that knows what they're doing but if our son wants to resist you're in a lot of trouble
Vital and goddess wife yes with a b jeez
Yeah if he's in the room with me it would be a problem but if he tries to be a problem for me and I see him do it before against real fighters and he just stops them and says it too what do you want me to do and Brad hit him so we don't want him to do that again and we don't think you will but boy that sucked and others did worse since terrible

Happy Birthday one Scotlands finest musicians' fiddle player Aly Bain, born in Lerwick, Shetland May 15th, 1946.
Bain began playing the fiddle at the age of 11 and studied under influential Shetland fiddler Tom Anderson. In the late '70s, he played on two of Anderson's albums -- The Silver Bow and Shetland Folk Fiddling, Vol. 2. Honing his craft in a series of local bands, Bain attracted international attention after joining Irish/Scottish band, the Boys of the Lough, whom he met at the Falkirk Folk Festival in 1969.
Aly released his debut solo outing, First Album, in 1985. Three years later, he traveled to Louisiana to record the album, Aly Meets the Cajuns. The same year, he met Phil Cunningham at a pub near Edinburgh and they agreed to tour together. Their first duo album, The Pearl, released in 1994, was followed by The Ruby in 1997.
Bain has hosted several musical series for BBC Television. Down Home explored the spread of the Celtic fiddle tradition from Ireland and Scotland to North America. Push the Boat Out, shown in 1991, was taped during the Mayfest celebrations in Glasgow. The Shetland Set, shown the same year, was taped at the Shetland Folk Festival. Bain's autobiography, Fiddler on the Loose, co-written by Alistair Clark, was published by Mainstream Publishing in 1993.
Aly had a wee health scare in 2019 and had to undrgo a triple heart bypass, but was soon on his feet again and is keeping himself busy.
Today, Aly continues to be an ambassador for Scotland abroad and a powerful advocate for traditional music.
Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham are currently touring, you can catch them next at Backstage at The Green in Kinross, on May 23rd The two will be at Sidmouth Folk Festival in August and will return to Scotland for gigs in Forres and Lanark, two concets in Glasgow's Òran Mór in September, quite fitting as the rough translation for the Gaelic name of the venue is 'great melody of life' or 'big song',

Unpacking my Library • Break Through • Illustration Exhibition • RCA • 1988
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the cover, front-and-back, for a lavish portfolio-style catalogue for an exhibition that celebrates 25 years of illustration at the Royal College of Art, London.
The illustration course was established, in stand-alone form, in 1963 under the leadership of Brian Robb and with Edward Bawden etc assisting. By the 1970s, a new group had emerged around Glynn Boyd-Harte, Ian Beck, and George Hardie etc. By the 1980s. Dan Fern was in charge, and things were shifting towards the dynamic potential of digital.
My late colleague, the typographer Phil Baines, was at the RCA in 1988 and designed this catalogue.
