So I finished watching Revue Starlight and it was amazing, phenomenal, incredible, and many other words! The one thing I’m stuck on is, why a giraffe? Why have I seen people talk about this show so much and nobody ever mentions the giraffe?! He’s just there, being a giraffe?! What the hell?!?!

Because he's us. He's the audience, watching from above, encouraging the story to play out as it does. He needs to be able to see from all angles, needs to be able to observe no matter how far away he is, and ultimately, his gaze is what causes the show to exist in the first place. He's the audience, and the audience needs to be able to see from a certain height, otherwise they won't enjoy the show at all.

Day 28, did a lot of work tonight! Added a few more in-between frames, worked on actually making everything flow a bit better, tried to fix volumes and anatomy, fucked other volumes and anatomy up, and in general got closer to fully animating a walk cycle! I have a lot more work to do before I'm ready to clean this up and tie everything down and actually turn it into Mizu, but I'm making progress and learning a lot!

I love David Tennant with my whole heart and think he is an absolutely phenomenal actor. Crowley is one of my favourite characters of all time.

But I just gotta take a moment to talk up Michael Sheen. He’s been great in everything I’ve seen him in. But his acting choices as Aziraphale just make me go absolutely feral! He can communicate so fucking much without even saying a word. I was looking for art references for my next thing and I came across this picture from after the kiss

HOLY SHIT DUDE! Holy fucking shit! One single frame and it says so so so so much! His performance is subtle and restrained and yet it is so incredibly powerful and clear! I am going insane over this man. Not to mention the absolute consistency that he (and likewise David) play their characters with. The mannerisms, the ways they carry themself, the range of expression. David does so much with the rest of his face since we can’t often see his eyes, meanwhile Michael’s eyes say absolutely everything and it is just absolutely phenomenal. These two in this show, especially in the second season, just give maybe some of the best performances I’ve seen in anything. It’s an absolute delight to watch and I cannot stop thinking about them both, but especially right now Michael Sheen lives rent free in my mind. I’ll say, once more, with the utmost affection and respect, HOLY SHIT.

even starting with the bad boys:

you have fabian, inheritor of the seacaster and lomenelda legacies and the elven oracle's champion in his own right. maximum legend. somehow a straight-a student, captain of the owlbears, and owner of the party house. he fights with the sword of the elven kings and will perform a full dance routine while decapitating you.

you have riz, licensed private investigator and angelic agent of the lower planar reconnaissance task force. litigator. campaign manager. found the rogue teacher by his own effort and then passed the last stand. the kid who showed up to school with a gun on the first day and now dual wields a sword and a magic gun. he will find you, he will fight you, and if he deems necessary he will eat you.

you have gorgug, creator and pioneer of the barbificer subclass, the first barbarian to be able to maintain spells while raging. the greatest wizard of the age. generally chill but will commit murder over a sex lawnmower. rock star drummer on the side. he can buff his party and solo a purple worm at the same time. he fights with an axe that affects nearby gravity as a returning weapon.

and then the bad girls:

you have adaine, the elven oracle. known for her exquisite spellcraft, unerring eye for the future, and a willingness to get her hands dirty. practical magic is her bitch. she issues 13 impossible prophecies in the span of a couple weeks. she defied the will of fallinel and brought modernity to the court of stars through dance battle (via fabian).

you have fig, of fig and the sig figs fame, the infaethable archdevil of the bottomless pit. an illusionist who's caused so much chaos that she has an agent of the council of chosen personally after her. psychologically threatened a guy in his dreams. a phenomenal bard, warlock of her own domain, and a paladin of conviction and rebellion.

you have kristen, the blessed saint who raised cassandra from the nightmare king and yes!/yes? from the void. who performs miracles with the shards of a dying god and holds the power of doubt as her shepherd's crook. she chose to walk away from being chosen and venture into paths unknown, even as gods asked for her worship. one conversation with her can make you question everything you've ever known.

I have never cried that fucking hard over a show in years.

I fully FULLY support the divergence of this episode, it was a phenomenal example of adapting source material in a way that feels like “oh yeah this is what actually happened they just didn’t have time in the game for all of this holy shit”.

They expanded on the frankly easy to ignore implications of the game and showed us that life can still be even in the midst of fear and uncertainty and apathy and FUCKING EVERYTHING, they showed us goodness and survival out of love because THAT is what The Last Of Us is about.

Death is horrific and sudden and will rob you blind with nothing to salvage; but it isn’t always that. Death is also kind, even forgiving. “Satisfying”, in the words of Bill. Frank wasn’t brutalized this time around, Bill wasn’t left alone to his prior demons. We got to see a side of this universe that hasn’t been portrayed thus far and it wasn’t twenty years of violent tragedy.

It was twenty years of two men enduring and surviving together in a world that had gone to shit, but they still took the leap and held hands while they fell. Everything else, the journey to the bottom, came after and it came painlessly.

of course it goes without saying that i am delighted by the silt verses' depiction of death (or, more accurately, entropy), but still. holy shit did they execute it phenomenally. everything belongs to her! everything is subject to it! and human efforts to contain it with our words are an exercise in futility! every face we place on it is just a sticking plaster on a wound infinitely older and deeper than we'll ever understand. a small (but not meaningless) comfort. like hammering blockades into the shore to try to hold back the ebb and flow of the tide - even the tallest cliff will be eroded away to sand and shingle, and forgotten, with time. and it's always been building up to this. the song faulkner's brother heard beneath the water when he drowned himself. carson's admission that experimenting with time-gods was a failure - "right now the technology just isn’t there". it's never going to be there! it will always be ahead of you, and you won't reach it until it's your time! you will never win, but you may leave behind a beautiful ruin! every god's a god of death - it's the only thing we need them for!
