I really hope that I’m preaching to the choir here but please, please can we all make sure that fan works stay in fan spaces, especially when it’s rpf.

I recently posted a fic to ao3 and within two days my work, which I deliberately locked so that it could only be accessed by ao3 account holders, had been screenshotted and posted on twitter. On ao3, my fic had under 600 hits, but the screenshot of it on twitter has over 350,000 views and thousands of interactions in various forms, including another individual who “joked” about reading it live on twitter. It is now one of the first tweets that comes up if you search the name of one of the people involved on twitter, thereby exposing it to far more people than it was ever supposed to be exposed to or would have been exposed to had it stayed on ao3, as I intended. This includes the people themselves, and their friends and families.

I absolutely do not want my work anywhere near the people I have written about, or even in spaces not dedicated to fandom. I am horrified at the thought that these people may have seen anything related to it, and I am horrified at the person who chose to take it out of its intended environment. Multiple people have reached out this person, reminding them that fanworks, especially locked fanworks, should not be shared around like this and have asked them to take it down to no response. Instead, I have removed access to my fic.

People who write fanfic do it for fun. That fun goes away when it starts getting dissected by twats on twitter. If you like reading fanfic, please don’t spread it to places that do not appreciate it or want to mock it. It’s unfair to the authors, and it’s unfair to the other readers, who engaged with it in good faith and will eventually no longer be access it.
