You remember how volatile Wesker had been after discovering the truth from Spencer.  The cracks you peer through now had been wedged clear open back then.  Salt dumped into the not-so-metaphorical wound.  You found him in a fit of rage when he finally came home, destroying his entire office just to cope in the only way he could think of.  Splinters of debris gave way under your footsteps and he glared daggers at you, daring you to come closer, daring you to cross the fray into the eye of the storm.

His reluctance to let you touch him weaned with every passing second that you smoothed your thumbs over his cheeks.  It was startling to see his typically calm exterior eroded so completely. You’d never seen him so… shattered.  It wasn’t until later that you’d understand that the foundation of his entire life had been swept out from under his feet. But, even then, you had an inkling that something had truly shaken him to his core.

“Who am I?”  

You’ll never forget the flare of amber glowing brighter in his eyes as each word fell from his lips over and over, nor the bruising grip he had on your arms, until he hid his face in the crook of your neck– secretly so desperate to hide from the haunting revelations of his life.

And you don’t forget it now as you run your fingers through his hair, cradling his head on your lap while he rests.  His recovery had been long and arduous, and it had humbled him more than anything possibly could have.  His dependence upon you had been a nearly insurmountable sore spot, but you wager it taught him a truth so incredibly foreign to his perception of the world.

Vulnerability can be okay.

At least it can be with you.  You’re not out here to stab him in the back or raw deal him for a larger cut in some grand scheme.  You’re not a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company pulling his strings nor the corpse that once orchestrated the entire marionette show.

You’re someone who loves him– adores him. 

It’s taken him a very long time to truly believe that, much less accept it.  You will forever be his greatest weakness and strength, all rolled into one.  You are leverage for anyone who wants to truly hurt him, but you are also the ferocity with which he will unmake them for even considering it.  

Worse yet? 

You are the only reason he’s glad to have not perished in that volcano.  Wesker remembers only flashes of his dreams while cocooned in Uroboros, but he knows, without a shadow of a doubt, that he dreamt of you.  That it was your voice that pulled him through, your presence that he reached out to in his near comatose state. It was you who he sought after waking, despite how his body screamed to cease his movements.

So maybe…

Maybe it isn’t so wrong to let those cracks open up when he’s with you.  Maybe you should see the parts of him locked away from the world.  You should know the little boy thrown into the best boarding schools money could buy, the one who wondered if he had parents like the others did, who sought academic excellence so that he’d have even a fraction of the love he’s seen bestowed upon others by right of birth to those who could love them– to the man he is now, stripped of his pride and still always left to wonder what his true name had been.

Long ago, he asked you a question under much different circumstances.  Have you earned me, he’d said.  As he peeks through his farce of sleeping to take in the sight of you looking at him with endless love, only one thought lingers in his mind.

It's a missed opportunity that despite Roy Harper and Jason Todd hanging out now there's been never any tension between about them or exploration of their differing approaches and perspectives on the drug crisis. Particularly because for both of them it is deeply personal.

Roy Harper.

Roy became addicted to drugs in the 1971 comic Snowbirds Don't Fly which was Neil Adam’s and Dennis O'neill's attempt to tackle the "youth's greatest problem!" drug use and addiction. I feel like all most people know is that Speedy took drugs and Ollie took it badly, but that honestly ignores the whole point of the story. The story challenged contextual stigma around addiction and drug use as a personal failing or something that only happened to weak people. It explored how it could happen to anyone, even a hero like Speedy. It focused on the social factors such as racism and poverty and how they push people into substance abuse as a way to cope. It even turns the trope of the evil foreign drug cartel on its head by making the guy behind the drug supply a wealthy white American man in who runs a Pharmaceutical company, doesn't do drugs, and actively mocks the people he profits off the suffering of.

The point therefore is twofold. Firstly, drug users are people just like you and me and it is vital to be compassionate to people struggling with addiction. Ollie who yells at and hits Roy and leaves him due to anger and fear is clearly in the wrong. Hal and Dinah who look after Roy and stand beside him at his friend's funeral and as he confronts Ollie are clearly in the right. Secondly, the solution is not to focus on the drugs but instead to deal with the systemic problems of inequality, oppression, trauma and disenfranchised youth.

Despite parts of it ageing bad (the use of slurs was to demonstrate the damage of racism, but I feel uncomfortable having slurs uncensored in a comic book written by white authors) it is a surprisingly progressive take on addiction for a mainstream 70s DC comic. It also clearly demonstrates Roy's opinion on the drug problem and how to deal with it. He sees anger and going after dealers/manufacturers (like Ollie did) to not be enough. Instead the real change comes from helping the people in that situation by improving their lives and compassionately helping them at their worst.

Enter Jason Todd.

For context Jason Todd has had almost his entire life shaped by trauma of substance abuse. His (adoptive) mother Catherine struggled with addiction and overdosed just months before he met Batman, effectively orphaning him. Soon after he was found by Batman who essentially drafted him into his crusade on crime, not considering that being a vigilante may be potentially damaging for an already traumatised child.

But when he came back in UTRH he decided he could best help Gotham if he killed (largely non-costumed) criminals and controlled the city's criminal underworld himself. After violently assuming control of the drug trade, Jason imposed his own rules for dealers, most famously that he would kill anyone who sold drugs to children or near schools. Later while incarcerated Jason Todd killed 82 Blackgate inmates (and harmed over a hundred) by poisoning the prison food. This mass murder was intrinsically indiscriminate and due to the US prison system it is reasonable to assume people charged with drug offences were included in the death count.

Jason does have deep childhood trauma associated with addiction and drug use and wants to help prevent suffering. That being said, his approach treats drugs as a criminal problem to be eradicated or controlled, not just a symptom of deeper social issues. He kills people who sell drugs to kids, rather than helping building a support system so kids aren't pushed into abusing substances to cope and people don't have to deal to survive.

What does this mean?

Scott Lobdell got details of Roy's addiction wrong and distorted him into a reckless idiot who has been ostracised from the community. But if it was done right their interaction and opposing perspectives/experiences could be really interesting. Both hate drugs and the drug trade, but the way they conceptualise this hatred differs significantly.

Roy focuses on helping the individual and addressing deeper social problems, seeing drugs as a devastating but ultimately symptomatic. Jason sees drug use as first and foremost a criminal issue, with true benefits being achieved through controlling the criminal underworld.

Roy's priority is therefore supporting people struggling with addiction and showing compassion for their situation. Jason doesn't really focus on ways to help the individuals suffering from addiction, as much as mitigating the overall harm and fitting the drug trade into parameters he views as acceptable.

I think it would add needed complexity to their relationship (and to Jason's redemption if we're going that route) as well as dealing with the more 'war-on-drug' elements of UTRH. Also it would help Roy stand on his own as a strong, articulate leader with a dark past rather than being (at least for a while) reduced to essentially Jason's sidekick.

Cannabis venture BBS Pharmaceuticals placed into liquidation

The hopes of close to 60 mum-and-dad investors in failed cannabis venture BBS Pharmaceuticals have been dashed.

Liquidators will sell off the assets of failed cannabis firm BBS Pharmaceuticals, but only after a dispute with its controversial owner is resolved. The appointment of liquidators at a creditors meeting on Wednesday means the company’s assets will now be sold off in a bid to recover funds for creditors. However before the sell-off, administrators are looking to resolve a dispute with controversial Adelaide businessman Aaron Hickmann, over his claims to funds raised from the asset sales. Administrators David Trim and Brent Kijurina were appointed liquidators at Wednesday’s meeting, and will look to progress investigations into the conduct of the company’s directors in the lead up to BBS’s collapse, including Mr Hickmann, whose company Ikara Equities took over as majority shareholder in March last year. Mr Hickmann, who runs advanced stadium lighting manufacturing business Vailo, claims Ikara has security over BBS’s assets – including the land near Tailem Bend where the cannabis growing facility was being built – giving it priority rights to funds raised from the asset sales. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Trim confirmed the validity of those claims were currently being disputed.

“Subject to resolution of the security interest, and understanding where that’s at, that will determine what happens with the assets once they’ve been liquidated,” he said. “The property is not going to be sold until those matters are resolved.” An administrators’ report sent to creditors last week reveals more details about Ikara’s disputed security interests over assets, including the land which is owned by BBS subsidiary Lomandra Nominees. According to the report, the matter dates back to a $750,000 loan provided by Ikara at the time of its takeover of BBS in March last year. “Mr Hickmann was a director of all three entities (BBS, Ikara and Lomandra) at that time and the loan documents were prepared in a manner that Mr Hickmann was to sign on behalf of all the respective entities,” the report says.

“The documents provided to me do not appear to have been executed and further, a review of written correspondence from the director to Mr Hickmann indicated that there were significant concerns with certain clauses of the agreements, specifically, that funds already advanced by Ikara (prior to the agreement) would become due and payable immediately, on demand by Ikara. “The director’s correspondence highlighted the consequences of those powers being exercised, the detriment it would cause to the company and Lomandra, and the reluctance to enter into same on behalf of the company.” On Wednesday a spokesman for Mr Hickmann issued a statement reaffirming his view the security interests were valid. “Ikara Equities … is a secured creditor of BBS Pharmaceuticals and will await the sale to realise any debts owing to the company being repaid,” the spokesman said.

“Ikara Equities disagrees with the administrator as to the validity of its security and maintains that it holds a valid security interest over BBS Pharmaceuticals and Lomandra.”

About eight creditors and shareholders attended Wednesday’s meeting, after earlier being warned they were unlikely to recover any of the debts owed to them following the liquidation process.

Sylvia Boutsalis was one of the company’s seed investors in 2019, putting in more than $200,000.

She said close to 60 mum and dad investors would be left out of pocket, with most of the individual losses ranging from $25,000 to around $300,000.

“I was introduced to the company through a mutual friend of one of the directors, and as soon as I heard it was medicinal cannabis I said yep I’m in,” she said.

“I thought this was the next big thing coming to Australia – it’s huge in America, and we’ve got nothing to lose.

“We looked at the projections and we were expecting an instant turnaround of our money within the first two or three years, plus some. It looked like a wonderful opportunity.

“And then Covid hit so the project stalled. But then we started asking questions – where are the glasshouses? Have you started growing the cannabis? What’s happening? Where’s all the money gone?

“My guilt stems from the promises I gave to other investors because I thought it was a sure thing. My family, my friends, my acquaintances, work colleagues – I encouraged them to invest and now I have to face them and tell them it’s gone.”

Early investigations into BBS’s affairs reveal a string of potential “offences”, or breaches of company laws, alleged against five current and former directors, according to the administrators’ report. The allegations include potential insolvent trading, unreasonable and excessive payments to directors and related parties, and unauthorised sales of company assets to related parties. There is no criminal investigation and no charges have been laid. Close to $3.5m worth of payments and transactions in the lead up to the company’s collapse have been identified as potentially uncommercial, unreasonable or voidable, and could be recouped by liquidators pending further investigations. That figure includes $202,000 in payments that “appear to be of a personal nature and include funds that were utilised for overseas travel”, and more than $1.6m worth of payments made to former directors. “Some of these payments were in respect of ‘works’ and/or ‘services’ provided to the company, however these payments may have been in excess of any value provided by the related entities,” the administrators’ report says.

BBS shareholders voted in favour of a takeover of the company by Ikara in March last year, when Mr Hickmann was promising to inject close to $85m into construction, technology and manufacturing infrastructure in a bid to turn the company’s fortunes around. However, the investment was never made and the company fell into administration in January, just three months after Mr Hickmann resigned as a director. The corporate watchdog can apply for orders disqualifying a person from managing corporations for up to 20 years if they were an officer of two or more companies that failed within the last seven years, and the way the firms were managed contributed to their failures. On Wednesday Mr Hickmann repeated earlier criticisms of the fees charged by administrators, labelling them as “outrageous” and “exorbitant”. Creditors had earlier in the day approved up to about $550,000 in fees to be paid to administrators and liquidators of BBS.
