Retorno de Audi al Dakar en duda por ajustes del reglamento

Audi tuvo un desastroso Dakar 2023 en el que no pudo luchar por el triunfo luego de grandes accidentes de Carlos Sainz y Stephane Peterhansel y variados problemas mecánicos para Mattias Ekstrom. El revolucionario proyecto del prototipo híbrido Audi RS Q e-tron ha logrado emparejar a Toyota y Prodrive en algunas etapas, pero no ha resistido en competencia en ninguna de sus dos presentaciones dakarianas. Ahora, Audi no tiene claridad de que quiera continuar invirtiendo en esta plataforma luego de considerar que los reglamentos no los favorecen en el Equilibrio de Tecnología o Performance.

Este es un tema que ya fue polémico durante el mismo Dakar, cuando en plena carrera, FIA y ASO le reajustaron la potencia a Audi con 8 kW extra (10,7 HP) para la Etapa 5 luego de evaluar la telemetría de las primeras cuatro etapas. Esto motivó fuertes declaraciones de Nasser Al-Attiyah en redes sociales diciendo que estaban casi ensuciando la carrera y regalándola al rival. No duró mucho esto, ya que fue en la Etapa 6 donde tanto Sainz como Peterhansel quedaron fuera de carrera, en algo no relacionado con el balance de performance, pero que Audi aparentemente siente que fue por sus pilotos empujando más allá de las capacidades del auto por un injusto equilibrio tecnológico.

Actualmente, Audi se encuentra en conversaciones con FIA y ASO para lograr un reglamento más justo para los T1.U como el RS Q e-tron. En declaraciones con Marca, Rohl Michl de Audi Sport calificó las negociaciones como constructivas, pero a pesar de esto, Audi no tiene planificado participar en ninguna prueba del Mundial de Rally Raid FIA W2RC al que se habían inscrito, salvo por ahora el cierre en el Rally de Marruecos y no está asegurada su participación en el próximo Dakar.

Carlos Sainz ha señalado que si Audi está presente en el próximo Dakar estará con ellos, pero ya se ha abierto a correr para otro fabricante buscando su cuarta corona. Los otros pilotos del equipo han sido habilitados para correr para otras organizaciones esta temporada, con Mattias Ekstrom disputando el Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge en la clase T3 con South Racing y ahora Stephane Peterhansel anunciando una carrera en motos con una Yamaha Ténéré en la clase Experience en el Morocco Desert Challenge.

¿Qué hay en común entre Santiago, Muxía, Finesterre y Lugo? Alguien podría responder que por todas esas ciudades pasa un tramo del camino (inglés, portugués, primitivo) y estaría en lo correcto. Pero para nosotras hay otra vinculación más algo más: mi amigo Harshil.

Con el Harshil nos conocimos en 2017, en el marco de un curso de derecho internacional que se desarrollaba en La Haya. Con la frescura que lo caracteriza, cayó un día con un tacho lleno de nuestra ropa recién lavada (incluídas las bombachas, claro). "Juro que no toqué nada", fue lo primero que dijo y nos echamos a reír. ¿Quién era ese chabon y cómo sabía que esa ropa era nuestra? La primera pregunta la respomdimos casi inmediatamente. Se llamaba Harshil, era de la India, le encantaba el derecho internacional y la comida, y era la persona más fácil del mundo para hacerse amiga. Lo segundo, jamás lo sabremos. Lo cierto es que después de seis semanas de semi convivencia en el Skotel The Hague, cincuenta viajes en tram al Vredespalais, cien vinos franceses de cinco euros, doscientos chismes y la visita a trescientos organismos internacionales, se podía decir que éramos re contra amigos.

Para mi fue la apertura a un mundo nuevo, el inabarcable universo de la cultura india. Para él fue encontrar a su parcera latinoamericana, tan hija del tercer mundo como él. Ambos hablabamos alemán, amabamos la mitología y la comida y teníamos prácticamente el mismo grupo de amigos en el curso. En definitiva, los dos éramos un poco raros en nuestra tierra natal y muy normales en esa melange de gente que fue el Skotel 2017.

Así fue como en 2018, por esas casualidades de la vida, nos encontramos nuevamente en Europa. Yo me había ganado una beca para estudiar alemán en Berlín y el estaba terminando un intercambio estudiantil por esa zona. Coordinamos y partimos rumbo a Praga, donde nos reencontramos tras un año. Fue un viaje muy divertido. Recorrimos la ciudad, tomamos Becherovska, comimos rolls de canela en el barrio de Mala Strana, y nos empapamos de la cultura bohemia. Después nos subimos a un tren y enfilamos para Salzburg, porque el ya conocía Viena y yo quería ir a Austria. Esa parte fue un delirio hermoso. Alquilamos una habitación en la torre mas alta del hostel más alto de la montaña mas alta de toda la puta ciudad y caímos los dos con valijas de rueditas, en su caso, un valijón enorme. Por suerte había un ascensor que nos llevaba hasta el hostel, que costaba unos 83.012 euros subir, y otros tantos bajar. Obviamente lo usamos solo dos veces y por absoluta necesidad jaja. En Salzburg visitamos la casa de Mozart, el lugar donde se filmó parte de la novicia rebelde y tomamos sidra en un barcito del centro. Bizarro el destino escogido, creo que si no hubiera sido con él no hubiera ido ahí ni por puta, o quizás sí pero después de haber recorrido toda Europa y buena parte de América, África, Asia y Oceanía. En fin, el viaje fue memorable y acordamos volvernos a encontrar cada vez que los dos estuvieramos en el mismo continente.

Fue así como llegamos al 2024, con mi equipaje de peregrino y su buena voluntad de tomarse dos vuelos hasta Compostela. Nos encontramos en la plaza del Obradoiro frente a la catedral, al son de la gaita gallega. "Bueno, vos también hiciste un buen viaje hasta Europa... que me cuesta tomarme un par de aviones?" me dijo cuando le agradecí el esfuerzo de venir. Le presenté a mi madre y a la Euge y a los cuatro segundos se hicieron amigos. Ya lo dije, es muy fácil hacerse amigo del Harshil. Como era el cumpleaños de la Euge, salimos a comer a un bar de tapas que encontró en lonely planet y que estaba in-cre-i-ble.

Al día siguiente partimos para Muxía en auto. Manejé yo y el ofició de copiloto (Peterhansel, contratalo, a ver si así atinas). Comimos en la Costa da Morte bajo la supervisión de una gaviota asesina que nos presionaba para que le dieramos comida, y partimos rumbo a Finisterre. Visitamos el faro y la confluencia del mar cantábrico y el océano atlántico. Sin embargo, a los cuatro nos gustó más Muxía que Finisterre. A la vuelta a Compostela fuimos a comer a un restaurante con estrella Michelin que asombrosamente manejaba precios sumamente accesibles y que encontró el Harshil en su web.

Al día siguiente visitamos Lugo, una ciudad pequeña, limpia y ordenada, con un casco antiguo muy bonito, defendido por una muralla erigida en la época del imperio romano. Durante el viaje en auto, Harshil nos entregó unos regalos traídos de la India para cada una de nosotras: jaboncitos de jazmín en una pequeña caja con su propio cajoncito; diferentes tipos de tés para tomar con o sin leche, según la variedad; sal de lago del Himalaya; etc., todo envuelto en un papel exquisito, dentro de cajitas y bolsitas de telas de colores, y en una bolsa de tela mas grande que parecía prácticamente una carterita. La disposición era de un buen gusto excepcional y me dejó admirada, avergonzada y aleccionada. Admirada por el valor de una buena presentación -algo en lo que nunca había reparado mucho antes- y en la capacidad de transmitir por su intermedio afecto y consideración; avergonzada porque justamente con nunca le preste mucha atención al tema, le entregué mi regalo -una caja de alfajores havanna- tal como lo yo recibiría de manos del repartidor del supermercado que me lleva la compra mensual a la casa, es decir, en su propia caja #shame recontra shame; y aleccionada, porque al dimensionar el contraste entre una cosa y la otra, me juré empezar a dedicarle mayor esfuerzo al tema.

Lo cierto es que unos kilómetros después de recibidos los regalos, de enamoradas las dos comadres de ese indio tan amable, y de repasado el régimen matrimonial y sucesorio hindú que shockeó a mi madre a otro nivel, llegamos a Lugo. Caminamos por arriba de la muralla a lo largo de los dos kilómetros de su extensión y luego bajamos a almorzar a un lugar que, al igual que el bar "los hijos de puta" de Capusotto, parecía ser atendido por sus propios dueños, probablemente primos de los de aquel bar. Un plato de rabas y dos horas después, arrancamos hacia la terminal de buses donde mi amicho tenía que tomarse el suyo de regreso a Compostela.

Con un fuerte abrazo nos despedimos y acordamos volver a vernos, a diferencia de esta oportunidad, antes de los cinco años.

Harshil, como lo indica su nombre en hindi, trajiste alegría, no solo al viaje, sino a nuestras vidas. Que felicidad haber podido compartir con vos, amicho. Espero verte antes del 2029!

Once again asking all the Sainzes to try to achieve things on their own. Like what do you mean Audi gave them all team orders. What do you mean Ekström got told to drive in front to create a trail for Sainz to easily follow. What do you mean Peterhansel started 6 mins in front but stopped to let Sainz through and then drove behind him for if he needs help during the day.

In less than 24 hours, the first big motorsports event of the year starts, the Rally Dakar 2024. And with it, the new season of the FIA W2RC.

This year, it might get interesting with a few new things, compared to last year. First, there is the 48 hour stage, that is basically a extremely long stage with four night camps on the route, and the drivers have to stop at the next camp, after a specific time, to rest for the night. In the morning they'll have to continue the race from there and the time will continue to run. There won't be any service from their crew at night. It's basically the evolution of the marathon stage.

Nasser Al-Attiyah will be driving one of the Prodrive Hunter this year and is now a teammate of Sebastien Loeb. Which means one of the best rally pilots ever and one of the best rally raid pilots ever are now driving for the same team. It will be interesting to see who'll be the better one, but my prediction is Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Nasser's seat in the Toyota Hilux now goes to Seth Quintero from the USA. He was one of the top drivers, in the last two years, in the T3 category for lightweight prototypes. I think he is a good addition to the team and will make a good job. If he will be racing for the win in his first T1+ year is hard to answer, but I'd give him a year, instead of thinking he can win this year.

Will Audi finally be able to demonstrate that a electric car can win the Dakar? The car is definitely fast enough, and also the drivers are, especially with Stephane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. But what about the reliability? That was the big weakness in the last two years, maybe they will finally have a Dakar without too many problems. If yes, they will probably win.

Joan Barreda Bort is now driving for Hero. Will he finally win his first Dakar, or will he once again, lose it because of one of his many mistakes and crashes? He is fast enough for the win, he just needs to reduce his mistakes and maybe take a bit less risk.

Or will the win go back to KTM, after Honda won last year? The bike category will be as interesting as never before, at least if you take the last 20 years.

The truck category will get very unpredictable again. The second year without Kamaz and the third year without MAZ means that the Iveco of the DeRooy team and the czech MM Technology Iveco, driven by Martin Maczik, will be the big favorites. But Ales Loprais is always good for a surprise with his Praga.

Stephane Peterhansel vuelve a las motos al menos por una carrera: Vivirá el Morocco Desert Challenge en clase Experience

La leyenda de Stephane Peterhansel comenzó en las dos ruedas con seis títulos en el Dakar junto a Yamaha. Desde 1999 que Mr. Dakar no compite en el Dakar en motos, pero por una carrera, el legendario piloto francés volverá a las dos ruedas ya que participará del Morocco Desert Challenge a finales de abril con una Yamaha Ténéré 700 dentro del programa Ténéré Spirit Experience para pilotos clientes que quieren vivir la experiencia de un rally fuera de competencia. 

Así, Mr. Dakar no tendrá el mismo recorrido que los otros motards del evento ni tampoco estará contra el reloj, pero estará presente en el bivouac del Morocco Desert Challenge viviendo la aventura tal como lo hizo entre 1988 y 1998 en su exitoso paso por el Dakar.

Como comentábamos ayer, ante las dudas de que Audi esté de regreso en el Dakar 2024, la marca de los cuatro anillos ha liberado el calendario de sus pilotos permitiéndoles participar en eventos cross country para otros equipos y fabricantes. Si bien el Morocco Desert Challenge no es parte del Mundial de Rally Raid FIA W2RC si coincide en fechas con el c de ese campeonato, donde originalmente debimos ver a Audi participar, pero que no los tendrá presentes.
