I love libraries.

I'm browsing the WWI shelves (as you do) and notice a very old book about the war. I glance at the first pages that talk about how one day the war will be over and we'll look at this place and not see any signs of the battlefield.

Then it hits me. And I check the publishing date.

This book was printed before the war's end. Not written. Printed. The physical object was created in 1918, while the war in question was raging and the end was as yet uncertain.

Now I'm standing on the other side of the apocalypse, with this physical link to that era in my hands. I'm living proof that the war did end and life did go on and we can all look at the end of the world as a long-ago memory.

Reading old books is cool enough, connecting our minds and hearts through the ideas of people who lived long ago, but there's something extra profound about holding a copy of the book that comes from the time that it was written. It's a physical link between the past and the present connecting me to those long-ago people. A piece of the past come into the future that gives me the chance to almost take the hand of some long-ago reader, to hold something they could have held, connecting not just mentally but physically to their era, a moment of connection across more than a century.

GOD I love my career path BUT ok like. I spent today at an academic conference on epistemic injustice and I LOVE ACADEMIC CRITICISM. I LOVE ACADEMIC THEORY. The problem is I don't want to BE an academic, it looks like it sucks and also I like to have work with clear material impact. but today has scratched an itch I rarely TRULY get to hit and I want ittttttt. I love PHILOSOPHY I love SEMIOTICS I love EPISTEMOLOGY I love THE PRODUCTION AND COMMUNICATION OF IDEAS it is 90% of what I am thinking about at any given time and nobody outside academia is nearly as interested in it as I am, or if they are then we're using mutually incomprehensible frameworks/language.

academia is like welding, wrestling or bricklaying. I want the opportunity to learn the skills and do it as a hobby but I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT want a career in it and the only ways to get at these things seem to be as vocational paths 😭

ok so i absolutely think there should be consequences and reactivity for sleeping with other people if you’re romancing someone, but just from a game design perspective, i have come across a bit of an issue

so i slept with the emperor (no reaction), then two nights later i slept with halsin (positive reaction), then two nights later i slept with mizora (possible breakup). and i think that last reaction is completely reasonable, but this series of events, in that order and so close together, definitely sets a precedent

played a session of d&d the other day that reminded me how much 5e isn't designed for investigation and diplomacy. it's a combat game; actual roleplay is barely supported by the rules

we spent half the session going in circles trying to convince someone to do something without knowing anything about him, and even with insight & persuasion checks to help it still took us 2+ hours to get to the heart of things. we wanted more information but couldn't figure out how to ask the right questions in character; the dm wanted to tell us but didn't know how to get us there without breaking the fourth wall. we only made a handful of rolls, and most of the session was just unstructured talking (not a bad thing, but further evidence that d&d isn't really designed for this)

i would have killed for a pbta-style "discern realities"/"read a person"/"assess the situation"/"investigate a mystery" roll to give the conversation more structure. instead of making me roll a general insight check and parceling out information my character could realistically intuit, give me the chance to ask questions directly. with the right gm, "what here is not what it appears to be?" or "how could i get your character to ___?" would have cracked that negotiation open without giving the whole game away. instead we just... kept going in circles
