"It's me, darling." Someone called out from behind the door and tried to open it.

Penny stopped in her tracks, leaving the open earring hanging from her ear, and rushing to close the door. "But, Nina! The groom can't see the bride before the ceremony!" Whined she.

Nina chuckled, trying to overpower her fianceé from closing the door. "I am no groom, am I?"

Penny just silently pouted. Nina saw everything through the crack of the ajar door. "Let me help you finish getting ready, everyone is waiting." Nina bribed her bride gently.

Not even five minutes later, a father was walking his daughter down the aisle to marry the love of her life.

"Penelopa Castillo, do you take Nina Laurens as your lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish until death do you part?"

"I do." Penny was looking at her soon-to-be wife with loving and teary eyes.

"Nina Laurens, do you take Penelopa Castillo as your lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish until death do you part?"

"I do."

"I now pronounce you wife and wife, you may-"

But Penny interrupted him. "Can we kiss, now?"

The priest smiled and nodded, a little chuckle escaped his lips. "You may kiss the bride now."

So Penny did as she was ordered, jumped around her now wife's neck, and kissed Nina as if her life depended on it. Everyone started cheering.

Some of the TMNT fandom (and, frankly, society) really ain't shit.🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

These ladies are female protagonists in their respective franchises. All of them have different body types that contrast from the default thin, petite body type that we're used to seeing. And all of them are BEAUTIFUL! 💖

Three of these ladies became love interests that ended up in healthy relationships with partners who love them for who they are. Also, four of them are women of color. (idk if Fiona counts. While she is green, she started off white so... 50/50? 🤷🏾‍♀️) That part is especially relevant to this post because Twitter got me EFFED UP. I'M ON ONE, ON TWO, ON THREE TODAY!

So the concept art of Mutant Mayhem's April O'Neil was revealed by James A. Castillo, an artist who worked on the movie.

And people are DRAGGING HIM LEFT AND RIGHT! Being disrespectful to both him and April's design. I can tell you right now not even a third of those quotes aren't positive! There is a vast difference between criticism and insults:

💛"I do not like this design. Besides the color yellow and her red/ginger hair, she simply doesn't read as April O'Neil." That's criticism. This expresses disproval of the design without any vulgarities.

💔"Rethink your entire career. "Artist" my ass! This shit is garbage! She looks like she sleeps in a van and smokes so much weed she reeks of it. You failed." That's disrespect. And I don't think I need to tell you why.

Normally, I tend not to discuss such sensitive topics on my blog (religion, politics, discrimination of ANY kind, etc.) for my sanity and out of respect for others with opposing views. But today, I will make an exception.

I would love to include Luisa, who alongside April was mocked and disrespected heavily for her appearance, but I wanted to speak on this matter from the perspective of a plus-sized African American woman. Luisa comes from an completely different background whose culture and standards I am not entirely familiar with. I can't speak on what I don't know. Respectfully.💜

In the black community, women are faced with colorism, texturism, constant comparison, and body image negativity on a daily basis. And a good amount of it comes from our own community! Our shade, our 4C hair, our weight, our attractiveness, our lifestyle! It's brutal out here!😭😭😭

However, in terms of media a plus-sized black girl is seen as ghetto, loud, and undesirable with a side of attitude. The best example I can think of is Dijonay from The Proud Family.

This is the show I grew up on! The theme song, the characters, the Suga Mama, ICONIC! I love Dijonay to pieces, but as I grew up I realize that she was, in some aspects, a negative portrayal. She was always chasing instead of being "the chase". She was a horrible friend to Penny. And she sucumbed to a lot of negative stereotypes with barely any redeeming qualities. And this was very disheartening considering that she was the darkest one in the group. And the heaviest. And as a little chubby wubby in the 2000s with THIS as my representation? I have to give the writers a bit of the side eye. Was she any better in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder? To that I would say.... meh. I love her in the reboot, but they could do so much more with her in my opinion. I still haven't seen them address the issue of colorism. 👀

While she is not a human, Gloria is voiced by a black woman (Jada Pinkett Smith) and imitates the sass of a black woman so... yeah. She's included. Gloria was persued by two men. One was the suave, flexing hippo Motto Motto. And the other was her friend/neighbor from her childhood Melman. She chose the latter for good reason of course. Now in Madagascar, Gloria wasn't mocked or criticized for her weight. In fact, hippos are known for their weight. However, she was seemingly fetishized for it. By Motto Motto to be exact. And being fetishized is NOT better than being ridiculed.

Unlike Dijonay, April was the chase, a love interest for Leonardo. I admit, I was SHOCKED that she was gonna be persued. Let alone that the writers wanted to try another Turtle/April pairing considering how April and Donnie went...😬. Now her backlash was on a completely different level. One that I wasn't even prepared for....

While Gloria and Dijonay are original characters, Mutant Mayhem's April O'Neil is a different interpretation of the character that has existed since the 80's. The same can be said for the Turtles, Splinter, literally everybody else! Every show and movie for that matter! And with every story, she changes. Design, motivation, relationships/dynamics, even race as of lately. All of it changes. And change isn't bad. In my opinion, it keeps things fresh and interesting instead of spoon feeding us the same story and concepts over and over again. Change challenges us. Change motivates us. However, some people don't like change nor want to accept it and adjust. And that's life. That's just the way it is. But change is necessary in order to progress.

She wasn't bad in the movie AT ALL. I absolutely adored her! And the dynamic between her and Leo wasn't akward or uncomfortable at all. It was handled really well. Ayo Ediberi did an incredible job bringing her to life! (GOD, I loved her in The Bear! Shameless plug lol)

That being said, I understand some of the sensitivity that fans have when a character changes so drastically you can barely recongnize them anymore beyond the bare minimun. (See also Sonic Boom's Knuckles) But the blatant discrimination, rude comments, and the boldness, THE AUDACITY, that some of these nasty Twitter fingers with their dirty fingernails have to type such disrespect to the artist that I can't repeat up here was wild af. Like, I can't believe we have to share a planet with some of them! Uggh!😷(But that's Twitter 24/7 so what's new?) Her and Rise April don't deserve the hate they get. You don't have to like them. Art is subjective. But to insult and harrass the artists and the people who look like the characters, then mask it under the umbrella of "tHaTs mY oPiNiOn" is 🐱. I said what I said. And I will say that shit again.

Also, just because she's black doesn't mean we can't have another white April O'Neil ever again. We know goodness well they could make another iteration of TMNT and make her white if they wanted to. Heck, I encourage them to explore other races and cultures too! New York is full of them! And it's not like all the other versions of April up and vanished. You can watch them anytime on Hulu, Netflix, Paramount Plus, etc.

One more point I'd like to make is that I am an African American woman who is currently on a weight loss journey. As a plus-sized girl, I had incredibly low self-esteem and picked up toxic, unhealthy eating habits from starving myself to overeating BECAUSE I starved myself. Also, I have experienced both sides from being disrespected and made fun of to being complimented and persued. I was at my biggest weight 2 years ago and I have made incredible progress to lose weight since then. People can lose weight. It is achievable! I went to school with some people who were way bigger than me that lost the weight by senior year! Just because she's big in this movie doesn't mean she can't lose weight by the sequel. Like I've said before, it's not wrong to encourage health and fitness!💪🏾 In life, they call this a glow up. A "remember how you treated them in high school" type of comeback. People can, and are allowed to, change. And it's not wrong to embrace your body and the skin you're in. It's all relative!💖

This post isn't to convince you to change your mind. And it won't make the bullies go away. I can't change the world overnight, nor am I trying to. At the end of the day, you're the consumer. It's your choice. Your prefrence. I can't tell you how to think.

I just wanted to spread a bit of awareness that plus sized people exist. And they will always exist. Everyone is deserving of representation in media in all facets. No matter their shape, size, shade, or sexuality. There are so many people from different walks of life who deserve to be seen and on screen. And the amount of visibility for black girls this year alone is amazing! And I want the same for other women of color, too!

Don't let this trash ass society and the people in it who prefer AI/robots over human beings, fake over real, and bad over good tell you otherwise. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. YES I AM TALKING TO YOU. YOU ARE AMAZING! YOU DESERVE ALL THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE AND MORE. YOUR STORY CAN CHANGE LIVES. BEING A GOOD, HARD WORKING PERSON DOES PAY OFF IN THE LONG RUN! YOU ABSOLUTELY MATTER IN THIS LIFE AND THE NEXT. WE SEE YOU. I SEE YOU. AND I ADORE YOU. RAISE YOUR SELF ESTEEM, ADJUST YOUR CROWN, WEAR IT PROUD, AND DO YOUR BEST!

-Straight orange hair that will go insane in the humidity (She always wears her hair down, like nobody has seen her with her hair up. Constance saw her in a ponytail ONCE.)

-Wears glasses (She literally just looks like the nerd emoji.)

-Has buck teeth (She was supposed to get braces but her parents spent lots of the dental money on a new bong.)

-Foundation is the only makeup he will wear and he spends all morning trying to make it look less noticeable because he doesn’t want to get bullied.

-He has hairy legs because he’s too scared to shave (He does everything he can to hide them)

-Mostly uses a wheelchair because it makes communicating easier, whether it’s through ASL or through the AAC device.

-Speaking of their AAC device, it has stickers all over it, they’re mostly sci-fi themed, space themed, comic book themed, or cat themed.

-Wears their uniform pretty much the same way Noel does but they’ll occasionally wear the girls jumper under the sweater vest (They also always have cat hair on them, so they need to carry a lint roller in their school bag).

-Design mostly based on Emily Rohm’s Jane Doe.

-Light blonde ringlets + a black headband with a little bow.(Just imagine the 2016 wig)

-The doll has a white lacy dress with a black ribbon around the waist and black buttons.

-Her face is completely white minus her pink cheeks. Her lips are red and small. Her eyes are big and completely black (Light doesn’t even reflect off of them).

-The separation between her head and neck is cracks.

-There are cracks that start from the corner of her mouth and end under her chin. These cracks allow her to move her mouth to speak (They look similar to a marionette’s mouth).

-Her body is curvy and looks like a corpse.

-Her white shirt is replaced with a white blouse with puffy sleeves that get tighter around her wrists + platform Mary jane’s

Constance

-Design mostly based on Lillian Castillo’s Constance.

-Coiled black hair that fades into purple at the end (She always plays around with her hairstyle, sometimes its in space buns, half-up half-down space buns, one big bun, or just down sometimes.)

-Wears pastel jewelry.

-Her glasses are rounder than Ocean’s and Ricky’s.

-Nails always painted in pastel colors.

-She just likes decorating herself in lots of pastel colors in general (when she gets pimples, she wears those smiley face pimple patches).

-She is plus-sized (if you draw Lillian’s Constance, draw her plus-sized for the love of god)

-Her shirt is buttoned up but she always forgets her tie.

Penny

-Design. Mostly based on Emily Rohm’s Penny.

-Really long brown hair (She hasn’t cut it since she was 14) usually done in twin braids + bangs obscuring her eyes.

-She wears goth jewelry that she always fidgets with (goth Penny is real TO ME).

-She secretly carries her doll in her backpack (Only the choir knows).

-She got pushed down the stairs a lot (before people started ignoring her) so she still has some injuries and bandages on her.

-Her body is curvy.

-She has hairy legs because she HATES how itchy her legs get after shaving.

-Again, her white shirt is replaced with a white blouse with puffy sleeves that get tighter around her wrists (the reason her shirt is different is because of her sensory issues) + platform Mary jane’s.

In his defense, Nico initially tried to stick to the theme ("old timey", unspecific beyond that), but has definitely ended up in the mud slide multiple times, mostly on purpose. He's been bouncing easily between there, the ocean and hot springs, the enchanted forest, various pubs and taverns, and the med tent. His clothes get more worn and period-appropriate for a lowly peasant with each passing day, and anything elaborate or ornamental was abandoned within the first hour. Farm boy vibes abound, but he'll carefully wash up any time someone requires medical aid, and if you do need treatment, you'll probably be given a wildflower or a copper penny or a stick of rock candy as a token on your way out of the tent. Ask him to do an accent at your own risk.

Welcome players for the game is on! The Lunar Covians who rsvp'd have all received their roles and clues for the evening. But, now it is time to put them into action.

You all have been invited to the billionaire and inventor of the newest steam engine on the market, Mrs. Cara Davers, dinner party for one reason or another. Some of you were brought here under the guise of a social event for the elite, others felt as though they had been threatened to attend and even more believed they were there for a dinner in memory of the late Mr. Davers. But, what is certain upon arrival is that this isn't your typical dinner party...

CALLING ALL PLAYERS

Join us on Saturday over in discord for our Murder Mystery dinner! While the event is mandatory, this IC discord event is optional and is sure to be a bunch of fun. Participation will count as activity for the week as well for those who RSVP'd last week and are active within the discord channel.

We have sent out all of the invitations detailing out your character's persona and clues your character is personally privy to, but if you have not received one yet, please send a message to the main so that we can resend it to you.

The instructions for how the murder mystery dinner will play out will happen in the discord channel step by step, but if you have any questions in the meantime concerning your character's role or clues, feel free to reach out privately to Becca so that we can talk you through it.

I understand the inhibition you mention, because I’ve also felt it at times, although never quite as criminally as you. Castillo wrote and said he had also given you a friendly ultimatum after fruitless attempts to discover how you were. It looks as if you’ve finally replied. Castillo is a good friend to you and from what I’ve always seen, a true friend. I was glad you wrote to him. I tried various ways to get news of you. Amorim, as you know, was one. Among others, the last was Angelillo, who was in New York for a few hours, but I found out too late and didn’t get to see him. Ugarte also wrote saying you hadn’t replied to him either. I can see now that you are still battling on in the hope of producing films. I’m surprised you are not already a master producer in that city, coming from such a good, penny-pinching, artistically and morally bankrupt school as that of Buñuel-Remacha. I am sure that sooner or later ‘you will triumph’, although that triumph would be more assured if you had the aforementioned gentlemen at your side. Descriptions:  A young U.S. Marine officer recounts his experiences of the Vietnam War over a nineteen month period. He graphically describes what it was like to perform three distinct combat missions: long-range ground reconnaissance in the Annamite Mountains of I Corps, infantry operations in the rice paddies and mountains of Quang Nam Province and special police operations for the CIA in Tay Ninh Province. Using Marine Corps official unit histories, CIA documents, and his weekly letters home, the author relies almost exclusively on primary sources in providing an accurate and honest account of combat at the small unit level. Of particular interest is his description of his assignment to the CIA as a Provincial Reconnaissance Unit (PRU) advisor in Tay Ninh Province, where he participated in several secret missions as part of the controversial Phoenix Program. The name and contribution of the CIA's most valuable spy during the war, the famous "Tay Ninh Source," is revealed.

Review: Finlayson’s 2nd book is a huge shift from his first. It spends more time talking about his experiences as a Marine company commander, as well as his time with the PRU. It gives a really good insight into the CIA/PRU program from his myopic perspective, as well as a bit about the Cambodian Incursion. 

He was thrust into a situation without the proper training or expertise, did the best that he could, and he readily admits his failures, which is important for a book like this. He’s very heavy handed with his beliefs though, even to the point of breaking off a friendship with a noted English scholar on the subject of warfare for their differing views. 

It’s worth a read, and is a good follow up to his first book.
