The scene (not sure from what version) where Patchka stands by Ice Pick Joe’s corpse, blood getting onto her fur, just breaks me. Such a loyal girl.

Everyone likes the really dramatic parts of Goncharov, but

When Ice Pick Joe is eating an ice cream cone and scratching Patchka’s neck as she licks the blood off of his ice pick, it’s just this unexpectedly lovely and quiet moment that more people should talk about.

The Epilogue is magnificent

Valery Michailov puffing on a fat blunt and playing with Patchka on a comfy sofa, while his little sister and her wife rebuild a clock together in their living room on Christmas Day is the absolute peak of cinema, and the perfect image to leave on before the credits roll.

was reading some old interviews and apparently they just didn’t give the cat playing patchka any lines or direction in the script and just let her improvise

does anyone else still occasionally gonch (arov). sometimes unaware of it even. like I just saw a picture of that turkish Olympic shooter and his cat and my brain went “awww ice pick joe and patchka” before remembering those were characters that don’t exist from a movie that doesn’t exist

Just watched Goncharov for the first time and man, huh, that sure is a movie. I don‘t usually watch movies but it‘s pretty good, somehow made me feel nostalgic. Feel baited on the queer part, like it‘s really not THAT much, i still like that interpratation though.

Also Patchka is the greatest character ever created.

Patchka Lives

Since this seems to be a trend now where we all explain what our favorite Goncharov moments are, I feel I have to bring up the fact that even with everyone in this movie who dies, and there is a lot, from Goncharov himself to Sister Theodora, despite all of this carnage and death, Patchka is alive and well and living with Sofia and Katya at the end, playing with a ball of string that one of them bought her as a little kitty Christmas present. My heart just explodes every time I watch the sapphic cut of the movie. This cat has seen terrible things, has been a party to acts of suffering and misery but now, like her new owners, she can retire from that life.

It does make me wonder about the rumor that in the director’s cut this might just be the last fantasy of Sofia as she dies but thankfully I will never have to know for certain because Scorsese is so insistant that none of his films have director’s cuts, even the ones that obviously do.
