A few days ago I picked up a book on the history of Chess from the library. Bit of a random topic, but I was curious.

Anyway here’s some unexpected and funny trivia:

There’s a Chess variant called Atomic Chess. It brings the simulated battle into the modern era by including planes and tanks among the pieces.

That’s not what makes it funny. The funny part comes from how it changes the rules around Promotion.

In normal chess, if you can get a Pawn to the far side of the board, you can replace it with any other type of piece. Most people choose Queens, for obvious reasons. But you can’t do that in Atomic Chess.

In Atomic Chess, a Pawn that reaches the far side of the board becomes an ATOMIC FREAKING BOMB.

Any pieces caught in the blast radius are “vaporized” and removed from the game. This includes the King, as checkmate doesn’t exist in Atomic Chess.
