NYCC 2023 Exclusive Interview: Dee Snider on Messed Up Parents, John Denver and His Upcoming Graphic Novel from Z2 Comics
Speaking truth to power isn’t a new concept but in the form of music, the accompaniment of melody turns mere words into fucking war chants. From Aretha Franklin’s divine command of the alphabet on “Respect” to Zach de la Rocha’s belted bombs of ‘Fuck you! I won’t do what you tell me!’ on “Killing In The Name Of”, bubbling frustrations and otherworldly anger is distilled to their rawest form: the…

We're Not Gonna Take It! And the Story of How We Almost Did
Tumblr media
Protesters outside of the PMRC senate hearings.
Are you a victim of rock? Well maybe you aren't, but all the way back in 1985 a group of prominent D.C wives felt that they were.
These women, with the help of Beach Boys member Mike Love and Joseph Coors, the owner of Coors Beers, formed the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center).
Their reasoning for forming as co-founder Susan Baker put it:
"It started because one day my 7-year-old came in and started quoting some of Madonna's lyrics to me, wanting to know what they meant. And I was shocked. I knew that you had to be concerned about movies and TV, but I didn't have a clue that my 7-year-old would be exposed to inappropriate songs."
The goal of the PMRC was to give parents more control over what their children could listen to. As well as implementing a rating system for music with bad language, sexual themes, and anti-Christian messages just to name a few. Eventually the group made a list of the fifteen worst songs, in their opinion and labeled them "The Filthy Fifteen".
(And it also happens to make a killer playlist)
Tumblr media
Besides a rating system and lyrics printed on album covers the PMRC had several other goals including:
"...records with explicit covers be wrapped or kept under the counter; that record companies reassess contracts with performers who engage in sexual or violent acts on stage; that broadcasters be pressured to exhibit "voluntary restraint" by not airing offending music videos, which would also be rated."
All that noise coming from the PMRC culminated on September 19th, 1985. When a hearing in the senate occurred. Two musicians were called in on behalf of the music industry, Frank Zappa and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister. Two of musics most studious and serious creatives.
Tumblr media
Zappa and Snider both gave eloquent defenses of what they deemed to be free speech.
youtube
But the PMRC had a trick up their sleeves... or so they thought.
They'd also invited John Denver to speak that day, assuming that he would stand with the side of "family values" but they were mistaken.
youtube
John Denver's testimony was the most scathing that day. He cited his own experience with having some of his music banned from radio. Even going as far as comparing the PMRC and groups like it to Nazi book burnings.
So what did the PMRC end up accomplishing? You know those tiny explicit labels in the corner of some albums? You can thank the PMRC for those. When they were originally introduced they were called "Tipper Stickers" after one of more outspoken PMRC members Tipper Gore (wife of Al Gore).
So while we didn't exactly take it, for a time we almost did. And thanks to testimony from Frank Zappa, John Denver, and Dee Snider, we can regularly enjoy any kind of music we want to- even the songs that promote the occult.
Both photographs come from Mark Weiss who photographed the event for Rock Scene Magazine.

Did Sia insult topic of autism somehow?
Oh honey, it's sooooooooo much worse than that.
Sia wanted to make a movie about an autistic girl that manages to connect to people/feel safe and confident through music. So far, nothing outrageous, just a simple concept that would obviously put Sia's music front and center while doing something nice and educating people on autism.
There was controversy about her not casting an autistic actress as it would have been nice representation, but she could have totally gotten away with that since, come on, hollywood hasn't even figured out Rain Man isn't exactly true to life, they're not ready to have an autistic person playing an autistic character. Baby steps.
The real problem started when Sia started promoting the "charity/support group" that was helping "educate" her on the topic to make the movie. The "charity" in question was Autism Speaks - which is absolutely HATED by the autistic community for things like:
1 - Spreading the myth that autism is a mental illness that one can develop/catch like the freaking flue and potentially be cured of, instead of a neurotype, aka something starts in the woomb and cannot be "cured" because to do that you'd need to replace someone's entire nervous system, which is impossible.
2 - Using that myth to get outrageous amounts of money from people so they "search for a cure" - that doesn't exist and will never exist because curing autism is biologically impossible, AND despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of autistic people don't even want to be "cured" (plus, since said "cure" would essentially mean giving the person a new brain, it leads to the question of "Would I even be the same person, or would that just kill and replace me?")
3 - Using the myth of "We don't know what causes autism" (we do, it's genetic) to, of course, get MORE money from people so they can "do research to find the missing puzzle piece" (if you ever see autistic people complaining about a puzzle piece being used to represent the condition, that's why, it was started by Autism Speak's massive disinformation campains).
4 - Falsely "confirming" things like soy milk cause autism with one of the world's most ridiculous "research", losing only to "vaccines totally make kids autistic, buy MY vaccine instead, guys, I am totally not an unbelievably biased person, it's ALL the other doctors/scientists lying to you. GIVE ME MONEY!"
5 - Pushing the narrative of "autism is inherently a tragedy" to distract from the fact that all the money they waste on stupid shit could be used to help autistic people and their families. Instead, they focus on creating more and more panic, making parents in particular despair even more - to the point that one of their "awareness videos" includes a mother talking about how she wants to murder her autistic daughter and then kill herself... while sitting right next to said daughter.
6 - Promoting ABA "therapy" - which was created by the same guy responsible for the attrocity that is gay conversion "therapy." Both have led to unbelievably high rates of confirmed PTSD and suicidal ideation in patients (victims), and ABA in particular has been compared to literal dog training. Very fitting since it was created by a guy who famously did not believe autistic people truly counted as thinking, feeling human beings, and said as much several times. Despite that, it is still praised by some utter bastards because "it makes the patients act less autistic when they're not crying in the corner or trying to jump out a window"
So yeah, working with these guys is a genuinely horrible thing to do since they're basically a scam/hate group pretending to be a charity - and people were STILL willing to give Sia the benefit of the doubt, since Autism Speak uses all their resources to make sure they're the first thing people see when looking up how to help autistic people.
Lots of Sia's fans, both autistic and allistic, warned her repeatedly, politely, that she needed to supporting them IMMEDIATELY as their goal was the exact opposite of the one she claimed to have - aka raise awareness through an accurate portrail of autism. People were even kind enough to name organizations like ASAN as replacements to help her fix any damage done to the project.
And instead of being a decent human being, Sia decided to cry on twitter about how the mean retar-I mean, autistics were bullying her even when she was so kindly using them for her vanity project.
Because yes, that's how the movie turned out. An unwatcheable piece of garbage, with the autistic "character" being so fucking bad even the people who actively use "autistic" as insulted being offended on our behalf - and of course, she was used just a prop to show how awesome Sia's character was.
Seriously, it was so bad the actress playing the autistic girl was sobbing in between scenes because she knew how it was horrible and she didn't want to insult anyone, but Sia is literally her godmother and helped her career by putting her in nearly all her music videos so she felt obligated to go along with it.
So yeah, fuck Sia and fuck Autism Speaks.

Parents Should Ignore Their Children More Often
By Darby Saxbe, clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at the University of Southern California
I recently spoke with an anthropologist named Barry Hewlett who studies child-rearing in hunter-gatherer societies in Central Africa. He explained to me that children in those societies spend lots of time with their parents — they tag along throughout the day and often help with tasks like foraging — but they are rarely the main object of their parents’ attention. Sometimes bored, sometimes engaged, these kids spend much of their time observing adults doing adult things.
Parents in contemporary industrialized societies often take the opposite approach. In the precious time when we’re not working, we place our children at the center of our attention, consciously engaging and entertaining them. We drive them around to sports practice and music lessons, where they are observed and monitored by adults, rather than the other way around. We value “quality time” over quantity of time. We feel guilty when we have to drag our children along with us to take care of boring adult business.
This intensive, often frantic style of parenting requires a lot more effort than the style Professor Hewlett described. I found myself thinking about those hunter-gatherers last month when I read the advisory from the surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, warning that many parents are stressed to their breaking point. There are plenty of reasons for this worrisome state of affairs. One is that we don’t ignore our children often enough.
The modern style of parenting is not just exhausting for adults; it is also based on assumptions about what children need to thrive that are not supported by evidence from our evolutionary past. For most of human history, people had lots of kids, and children hung out in intergenerational social groups in which they were not heavily supervised. Your average benign-neglect day care is probably closer to the historical experience of child care than that of a kid who spends the day alone with a doting parent.
Of course, just because a parenting style is ancient doesn’t make it good. But human beings have spent about 90 percent of our collective time on Earth as hunter-gatherers, and our brains and bodies evolved and adapted to suit that lifestyle. Hunter-gatherer cultures tell us something important about how children are primed to learn.
A parenting style that took its cue from those hunter-gatherers would insist that one of the best things parents can do — for ourselves as well as for our children — is to go about our own lives and tote our children along. You might call it mindful underparenting.
Children learn not only from direct instruction, but also from watching and modeling what other people around them do, whether it’s foraging for berries, changing a tire or unwinding with friends after a long day of work. From a young age, that kind of observation begins to equip children for adulthood.
More important, following adults around gives children the tremendous gift of learning to tolerate boredom, which fosters patience, resourcefulness and creativity. There is evidence from neuroscience that a resting brain is not an idle one. The research tells us that the mind gets busy when it is left alone to do its own thing — in particular, it tends to think about other people’s minds. If you want to raise empathetic, imaginative children who can figure out how to entertain themselves, don’t keep their brains too occupied.
An excellent way to bore children is to take them to an older relative’s house and force them to listen to a long adult conversation about family members they don’t know. Quotidian excursions to the post office or the bank can create valuable opportunities for boredom, too.
Leaving kids’ screens at home on such trips can deepen the useful tedium. It also forces parents to build up their tolerance to their child’s fussiness, an essential component of underparenting. Parents too often feel the need to engage their children in “fun” activities to tempt them away from screens. But by teaching children to crave constant external stimulation and entertainment, intensive parenting can actually worsen screen dependence.
To be sure, when kids are upset, in danger or require guidance, parents can and should swoop in to help. But that is precisely the point: It is only by ignoring our children much of the time that we conserve the energy necessary to give them our full attention when they actually need it.
In recent years there has been a lot of hand-wringing about so-called helicopter parents and their hopelessly coddled children. But we rarely talk about what parents ought to do instead. In an ideal world, we would set children loose to roam free outdoors, unsupervised. As a small-town Ohio kid in the 1990s, I spent hours with my brothers playing in the creek behind our house, with plenty of time to get good and bored. When that sort of “free range” experience is not an option, however, mindful underparenting is the next best thing.
This approach can take the form of bringing children with you not just on boring errands, but also when you work, socialize or exercise. I was at my gym the other day when a father came in with his 4-year-old son. The two of them took turns working out with a trainer teaching them martial arts moves. When it wasn’t his turn, the 4-year-old scrambled around the gym and, when he got tired, lay on his belly on the mat and watched his father practice kicks. Observing the boy, his big eyes taking in a ton of social information, I thought about all the parents who say that they have no time to exercise because they’re too busy with their kids.
At the same time, I thought about all the gyms that bar small children. Even as parenting has gotten more intensive, public spaces, especially in the United States, seem to have become more hostile to the presence of children. I wrote most of my Ph.D. dissertation alongside my toddler in a coffee shop in my neighborhood that had a mini play area with stacking toys, board books and room to park a stroller. That coffee shop is gone now, replaced by a sleeker cafe where it’s hard to picture a stray plastic toy, let alone a rambunctious 2-year-old.
Parents have it easier in countries such as Germany and Spain, where you can find beer gardens and tapas bars situated right next to playgrounds, or in Denmark, where parents routinely park their infants in strollers outside cafes while they socialize. In such places you can relax and catch up with friends while children romp around — a reminder of how much easier parenting gets when we enjoy the social trust born from shared investment in care.
In other words, underparenting requires structural change, and not just the obvious changes that we think of as parental stress-relievers, such as family leave and paid child care. It also requires that as a society, we build back our tolerance for children in public spaces, as annoying and distracting as they can be, and create safe environments where lightly supervised kids can roam freely. In a society that treated children as a public good, we would keep a collective eye on all our kids — which would free us of the need to hover over our own

The Batman Returns backlash gets at one element of 90s-era parental backlash: there was the Satanic Panic, and the Parents Music Resource Center's fretting over lyrics, and the groups that sought "hidden messages" in Disney movies, but a lot of media panics then were really about thematic elements. Debating if a movie was appropriate for kids not in terms of content but in terms of tone. Kids of the era fondly remember the darker content in kid's media, but their parents were less fond of it and the perceived threat to Childhood Innocence it represented. Basically everything had this "it says PG, but is it really not too intense for kids?" question attached to it. Reminds me of when I looked up what backlash there was to Hunchback of Notre Dame at the time, and it was mainly about it being Too Dark and not its content
Besides Batman Returns, widespread concern that the movie was Too Dark was responsible for Babe: Pig in the City flopping so hard the director didn't get to make another live action movie until Mad Max: Fury Road

In 1985, after concern about the effect of music on children, a group of four women including Tipper Gore formed the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC). The group pushed for a voluntary ratings system for the music industry similar to the movie industry and released a list of songs they found objectionable that was dubbed the "Filthy Fifteen." One of the songs on the list was Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," while tracks by Judas Priest, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Venom also found themselves under scrutiny.
A Senate hearing was held on Sept. 15, 1985 to discuss placing a rating system into effect. At the hearing, representatives of the PMRC testified along with Twisted Sister's Dee Snider, Frank Zappa and John Denver.

The Filthy Fifteen
One of the actions taken by the PMRC was compiling a list of fifteen songs in popular music, at the time, that they found the most objectionable. This list is known as the "Filthy Fifteen" and consists of the following songs along with the lyrical content category for which each song was considered objectionable

hi internet bro, You posted Duolingo Yiddish the other day. Are you taking it as a heritage language ? Did you hear it growing up? How do you feel about studying it (in the Duo version of study)
I ask because I am curious about learning the language of my ancestors, but don't have a clear place to use it- whereas my workplace is multilingual and it would be more practical to learn the trade languages I hear every day.
but I still want to help revitalize indigenous languages and culture.
Hey there, thanks for asking!
I'm learning Yiddish because it's the language of my ancestors who fled Russian and Lithuania in the wake of pogroms at the beginning of the 20th century. When they reached American there was a great deal of pressure to assimilate.
One of my great great grandfathers was very proud of his ability to speak English without an accent, something that he associated with his success in starting a business which would later give him the ability to send my grandfather to college, making him the first person to do so. On the 1920 census, that great great grandfather's native language is listed as Jewish, which was sometimes how Yiddish was referred to.
My grandmother grew up in a house with Yiddish speaking parents. They were orthodox, but her father didn't wear a kippah outside of the house because of the pressure to assimilate. Her parents only spoke Yiddish when they didn't want their children to understand what they were saying. As a result, my grandmother never learned.
So I'm learning Yiddish for the same reason I wear a kippah, because my not-so-distant ancestors didn't feel like they could. Because it makes me feel connected to them, who and what they left behind, and the generations of Jews who have kept Yiddish alive both in Europe and diaspora communities. Certainly, it's less "practical" than learning Spanish or Chinese or Arabic or any number of other languages that are more commonly spoken.
But if we only learned languages because they're practical, what happens to the languages that don't make the cut? What happens to the languages that have been deliberately suppressed by colonialism and genocide and assimilation? There are many different reasons to learn a language; practicality is only one of them.
I'll be honest: I'm conflicted about the Duo version of Yiddish. Here's a really good article that explains the debate over the dialect of Yiddish that Duolingo chose to use for their course. The TL;DR is that Duolingo teaches Hasidic Yiddish, a popular dialect but not a universal one. Different dialects result from different communities, and there are political implications for choosing one over the others.
But Duolingo is free, and it's easy for me to spend ten minutes in the evening practicing a few words. It's not the best language learning platform by any means, but it has the language I wanted to learn and it meets my (admittedly simple) needs. After a year or so (and I'm maybe 50% of the way through the course) I find myself able to read simple texts and understand snatches of spoken Yiddish.
I'm also a member of the Yiddish Book Center, which I would totally recommend. They have lots of great resources for learning Yiddish and for interacting with Yiddish culture via literature, oral history, music, art, etc. Most of their programming is in English, and is easily accessible. There are other organizations out there doing great work to support and revitalize Yiddish, this is just the one I'm most familiar with.

First of all, so so sorry your situation. Im in a similar one actually so I really hope you're okay. Even though it's not dire, mine isn't either, it's very draining and can be super overwhelming since you dont have the support of your parents to guide you. People have already mentioned keeping documents in order. you mentioned commissions, time how long it takes you do to things and decided how you'd like to be paid based on the hour. Do Not undersell yourself. If you're uncomfortable with people maybe seeing your real name/using real info for payments, there are companies that work as your registered agent (at least that's what it's called in the usa) that you can use the address of for a yearly fee
You can also look into passive income things with art like making stickers for redbubble and Ive heard about artists making stock images before but I don't know how that really work tbh ^^;
-
here's a good post on general adult knowledge
here's a post on things to know once your out
Always Pay Rent First. Normally there's always some sort of way to get food, losing your apartment makes it super hard to keep a job
-
As for staying sane, people really help. Not necessarily even talking a whole ton.
Going and sitting at a cafe or park. wandering around a mall.
It's why I adore anime cons. You can look up board game or crafting groups in your area. If you're lgbtqia you can look for nearby queer centers, they're really helpful for advice and resources. Libraries are ridiculously useful. My nearby one hosts plenty of events and has a poster board for nearby event happening. You can just spend the afternoon there.
Journaling and deep breathing and calm music all really help me too.
Therapy has always been the most helpful but not everyone has access to that.
Also getting a good nights rest. So many of my problems have been helped a lot by getting better sleeping habits
-
As for where to move, think about things like climate, laws, how the people there act. My town is super queer friendly but two towns over they're very much not, so be careful. Normally a simple google search on the name of a town can tell you a lot about it.
When picking out apartments, things like if you have animals or a car are super important. I have a car so Im looking for somewhere that has dedicated parking cause I can't afford someone hitting it when it's parked on the side walk.
-
There are jobs that lead into other jobs. Knowing powered equipment, such as forklifts, can score you better paying jobs in the future.
If you're looking into something art wise, just focus on portfolio, no one cares if you went to college as long as you can do what they need.
There's also apps for things like setting up dog sitting. I've also heard of event staffing companies that'll give you jobs as they come, never done it though so look thoroughly into that.
you can look up the average rent/utilities and such of a town you want to live in to get an idea of what you'll be paying
-
Credit score is super important in the usa to renting, but I don't know if you have that or an equivalent. If there's is, there should be secured credit cards that help you start building credit if you have none.
-
Just remember that this won't last forever and you got this!! it's painful and scary but it's temporary.
Also remember that you still deserve better even though you're not being abused, it still hurts and that's vaild.
I dont know if any of this is helpful but I wish you the best and feel free to ask questions if you need anything :D

Frat!Kyle Spencer x fem!reader ✧ Angst/hurt comfort
Pt 1 of ? ✧ 3.6k words
Taglist: n/a
Tumblr media
(🚨 Warnings: talk of s/a from a parent, Beating, Abuse, Self Deprication, crying, panic attack. 🚨)
Summary: Kyle was supposed to be gone for a entire week for spring break, he comes back in 2 days with a harrowing confession.
(A/N: This is dark and heavy and I tried my hardest to be respectful and represent Kyle as a victim of abuse in a realistic and dignified way. I will be writing a part 2 where Kyle begins his healing journey such as attending therapy and going into more depth of what his mother did, finding resources at the school's LGBTQ center, and asserting boundaries into the relationship between himself and the reader. I don't want to "put him to bed and be done with it" because I don't think that I will be satisfied if I don't give him even a piece of justice that the show failed to. I also tried to add more dimension into Kyle's character instead of making him some happy- go lucky frat boy fairytale. Yes he is a sweetheart, but he is allowed to be angry, upset, and stand-offish because trauma sometimes presents itself that way and he is human...at least in this state.)
There's also like 3 time skips which aren't my favorite but it be like that sometimes, honestly.
✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧
The spring semester of your freshman year had brought you fresh flowers for your dorm, warm sunshine, and a blonde headed angel who loved you more than life itself,
Kyle Spencer.
You had met him in your Psych class. His unspoken, ”assigned” seat was right in front of you and you both sat alone, so when the professor said “turn to your neighbor.” Kyle would turn to face you.
Turning to your neighbor soon turned into doing projects together, helping each other with homework, and spending late nights in the library showing each other your favorite songs and eating off the McDonalds dollar menu when you were supposed to be studying.
Kyle was the sweetest guy you had ever met, he could light up a room just by walking in and flashing that beautiful, dimpled, smile and despite being a frat boy, he never treated you differently around his frat brothers and always made sure that the women in the room were respected and felt safe around them.
You two had been attached at the hip since you met. You had a single dorm so sleepovers were always on the table, especially because Kyle hated sleeping in the frat house, it was loud, and sticky, at least that's how he described it.
He always preferred to lay in your bed where it was warm and smelled like your perfume, he was happy to join in whatever you were doing as long as you would have him. You two would listen to music, podcasts, read to each other, eventually falling asleep with your limbs entangled every single time.
Kyle never felt like a burden when he spent time with you.
There was no label to your relationship, it was just something for you to cherish with one another.
It went on like that for 2 months, until Kyle officially asked you to be his girlfriend, right before you moved out of your dorm for the summer. You were finishing up packing your things away and there he was, looking bright and handsome at your door nervously fidgeting with the vase that held a a bouquet of lego flowers.
“I wanted to give you something I made, sentimental y'know?…and I also wanted to give you flowers that never die.”
A small note around the vase read,  ‘Y/n, be my girlfriend?’
Of course you had said yes, with 0 hesitation. It was simple, silly, and sweet just like he was, and Kyle was officially yours.
Although he was your Prince Charming, Kyle did have his shortcomings, he had a habit of shutting himself in when he was upset and completely ignoring you for days, especially when he had come back from visiting home.
When he finally came back around he always apologized and told you that it was issues with his family, but he didn’t like to talk about it and you never wanted to push him.
Kyle also had…issues with intimacy, with touch really. You two had never had sex, you didn’t mind of course. He just said he wasn’t ready, and you respected his choices. You two had almost done it at least 100 times, you could literally feel him melting underneath you as simple kisses turned into steamy makeout sessions, but he would always just push you off at the last minute. Kyle didn’t really like when you touched him at all unless he initiated it, especially at the beginning of your relationship. You would be talking to him and put a hand on his thigh and he would just suddenly tense up and move your hand to your own lap, if you came up behind him and put your hand on his back he would physically bend himself away from your touch.
That's just how Kyle was, physical touch wasn't his love language and he was...jumpy, the worst part was when you would be trying to express something with your hands and he would flinch and shut his eyes for a split second, like he was afraid you might hit him. He had blamed it on the roughhousing from his frat brothers, but you had always second guessed his response and kept it in the back of your mind, making sure you were gentle with him.
Things had definitely gotten better as your relationship matured, Kyle was much more relaxed and comfortable with your touches but he did still have his moments where he didn't really want to be touched and he got agitated if you kept initiating it, but he was never mean about it. He was always gentle, but he would distance himself.
Friday, 6:39 p.m. -------------------------------
It had officially been a year since you had met Kyle, spring was rolling back around and everyone was getting ready to hit the beach and visit their families during spring break. 2 whole weeks of no exams, classes, or projects.
You sat at the edge of his bed, kicking your feet and watching him pack his bags for his weeklong trip back home.
“are you sure you don’t want to come with me?” He batted his big brown eyes at you.
“you know, I would my love,” You gave him a smile as you watched him try to shove 14 shirts into a duffle bag already filled with clothes, “But I told Zoe that we would hang out, and you know we don't see each other often.”
“Yeah, yeah I know!" He playfully threw a red shirt your way, “that’s a tomato! I’m throwing tomatoes at you! boooooo! boooooo!”
“you're such a cornball!” You shook your head, admiring how cute he looked in the warm tones of the sun illuminating the room, “But I do love it, and I promise you, next time you go out to visit your mom I’ll come with you.”
“I’m only a cornball for you so don’t go telling anyone” he flashed his dimpled smile your way, “I won’t forget your promise, I really need you there with me.” he said the last part quieter as he held your hands in his,
“Ky,” you cooed “I know you and your mom fight a lot, but I am just a phone call away if you need me, babe. I’ll always be there for you.”
“Yeah…I know ” His eyes shifted like he wanted to say something else but instead he just fidgeted with your hands and looked down, you had noticed that he seemed on edge every time it was time to go back home.
“Honey?,” You gently raised his head with a finger to his chin so his eyes could meet your own,
“you don't have to go if somethings bothering you…you know you can talk to me about anything, right?” You rubbed his hand with your thumbs.
Kyle tensed up, and he removed his hands from yours.
“if there was something wrong, I wouldn't be going back home, y/n.” He gave you a dismissive smile “Don’t worry so much.”
“I’ll try not to” you smiled back, kissing the dimple in his right cheek, “I do have to get going Ky, there's a bonfire on the beach tonight and I have to get ready before Zoe bites my head off" you smiled gently, "it's not too late for you to come with me, it's a long drive. Why don't you just leave tomorrow morning and i'll come with you?"
Kyle sighed "I would, trust me no one wants to drive 6 hours in the dead of night. But if I don't go tonight and get a 'full week with her' it'll be a whole thing."
"Okayyy, but call me as soon as you hit the road and when you get there and make sure you eat something before you go." you placed another gentle kiss on his cheek.
"I will," he blinked twice, his cheeks blushed from being completely flustered, how did he ever score someone as sweet as you? "have fun. I love you"
"I love you too, blondie”
You were about to make your way out the door, but Kyle stopped you, suddenly yelling your name,
"Oh wait, y/n!"
You jumped, but turned back around, meeting his dark eyes as he approached you with something in his hand.
"Oh- sorry I didn't mean to scare you," he placed a kiss on your cheek as a apology, "I almost forgot! I got you something."
"Really?"
"Happy anniversary!" Kyle opened his hand to show you the gift, it was a dainty gold necklace with a pearl pendant hung from it, "it's vintage avon? I don't know what that is but the lady at the shop said that you'd look pretty in it after I showed her a picture and of course I agreed." He scratched his neck, nervously "I told her you were into v-vintage things, so-"
You cut off Kyle's rambling with a kiss, seeing that he was blushing like he had never spoken to you before.
You pulled away with a smile, "It's beautiful Ky, thank you baby...but i'm confused?"
His eyes widened, worried that he had messed up.
"I know, I should've asked you if you preferred silver or gold-"
"no, no, no it's not that at all!" You cut him off "You asked me to be your girlfriend in June, it's only April."
"I fell in love with you in April."
You felt your heart swell in your chest, "You're too sweet, I would've got you something, if I knew we were doing gifts!"
"Don't even worry about it," He spun you around so he could place the necklace around your neck, the lady at the store was right it did look beautiful on you. "I don't want to keep you for much longer y/n." He glanced at the time, it was nearing 7:30 and you were supposed to be meeting Zoe at 8:45, "Go have fun with your friends, I don't want you to be late."
You gave Kyle a gentle smile, he was always so considerate and warm.
"I love you Kyle, i'll see you when you get back."
"I love you too, y/n! I miss you already!"
You sealed your goodbyes with a final kiss, and then you were off.
Friday, 10:07 PM ------------------------------
“is that Y/n y/l/n?!” Zoe nearly tackled you in a hug as soon as she spotted you standing on the beach, it had been a year and a half since the last time you saw each other. You had been the best of friends in high school but after her boyfriend passed...tragically, she moved away and you lost touch.
You had reconnected on instagram when she found out you were going to college in Louisiana, and that's when she revealed her truth to you. Zoe was a witch, and she studied amongst other girls just like herself at a school, about a hour away from yours. You didn't believe her at first but you were quickly turned into a believer when she "enchanted" the admissions office attendant so you could have a single dorm.
When you weren't with Kyle, you were face timing Zoe. You two talked every single day, it didn't matter if it was 2 a.m. You two had to talk for at least an hour. It wasn't practical for you to see each other in person often, so when she invited you to a beach party for spring break, you couldn't pass up the opportunity to see your bestie.
"Hi Zoe!" you hugged her back, resting your head on her shoulder “it's cold out here!” you zipped your hoodie up over your swimsuit,
"I know, I was freezing my ass off," she held onto you a little tighter, so you could warm yourself up with the heat of her body against your own. “They should be starting the bonfire soon, do you want a drink? it'll warm you up.”
"Yeah, i'm just gonna have a shot-"
You felt your phone buzz in your pocket, and you were quick to grab it
"who's calling?" Zoe peered over your shoulder,
You pulled your phone out to check, happy to see Kyle's name "It's my boyfriend."
Zoe let you go, giving you privacy "i'm gonna grab you a vodka sprite, i'll be back."
You watched as she walked off towards a cooler, and answered your phone.
"Hi Ky"
"Hey y/n I'm leaving right now, just letting you know."
You could hear his car engine roaring to life in the background
You wished that he could see your facial expression, you were shocked.
"It's 10:00 p.m. Kyle! Why are you just leaving out? You won't get there until 4 in the morning!"
"...I procrastinated"
"Well why don't you just meet me at the beach? I don't want you driving this late on all of those backroads."
"As much as I would absolutely love to party with you, I have to get going. My mom has already called me 7 times wondering where I am."
You could tell that he was frustrated just from the slight change in his tone of voice "I'll be okay y/n," it sounded like he was reassuring himself more than you, "I just left 7/11 to get a red bull, its the white one you like, so hopefully it will keep me up."
You exhaled through your nose, he was already on the road so their was no changing it. "Just make sure you're driving safely okay?"  You knew that his mind would be more clear if he got some sleep and drove in the daylight, but you didn't want to start a petty argument.
"I will. I'll call you in the morning."
"Okay, I love you Ky...enjoy your trip."
"I love you more y/n, enjoy your party."
"Bye, baby."
"Bye."
As the line dropped in your ear, Zoe was right in front of you handing over a red solo cup, smiling.
"Vodka sprite for my angel and a lemon white claw for me. Cheers."
"Thanks, Zoe" You two clinked your drinks together and simultaneously took a sip, watching as the flames of the bonfire illuminated both of your faces in warm orange lighting.
She pointed to your chest, "cute necklace by the way."
Sunday 3:17 a.m. ------------------
Three cranberry white claws later, Zoe had dropped you off at your dorm, luckily you had slept off most of your hangover so you weren't completely out of it when you were woken up by a knock at your door,.
you sat up in bed eyes blurred,
“Who is it?” You shouted, annoyed by the intrusion of your rest.
There was no response, the knocking just persisted.
You were feeling better luckily, so you took a long sip of the strawberry gatorade that sat on your nightstand, and stumbled over to the door checking the peep hole and see who in their right mind could be at your door this early.
You were met with fluffy blonde hair and brown eyes….it was Kyle.
You opened the door immediately, vision still adjusting to the lights in the hallway. You were happy to see him.
“Ky? What are you doing here?” You gasped, “did I sleep for a whole week?!”
Kyle didn’t say anything at all, he was barely even listening. He just gave you a glassy eyed stare, before collapsing into your arms.
You managed to catch him, holding up his entire body with your own even though you were dazed and confused
“I missed you too Ky-” you realized that he wasn’t just hugging you, his entire body was shaking…he was crying, hard and holding onto you like you were the only thing keeping him alive.
You were immediately concerned,
“Kyle? Are you okay?“ You rubbed his back, allowing him to cry it out into your shoulder.
“Come on baby, work with me” You had to drag him into the room, because he was still standing in the doorway and you couldn’t hold him up much longer.
You were gentle with your movements, cautiously laying him down on your bed so you could fully assess what was wrong.
He looked up at you through wet eyelashes, his face was swollen and red, his beautiful brown eyes were puffy from the salty tears that streamed down his face, and his lip was busted and bleeding.
The sight of him so hurt broke your heart into 1000 pieces, and the sight of you looking down in him made him feel pathetic, why was he the one crying at your door when he cheated? how could he be upset when he had kept a secret from you for so long? All of his thoughts ran circles around his head.
He covered up his face with his hands, not wanting you to see him like this,
“Don’t look at me, i'm so sorry y/n” he sniffled, trying to curl in on himself.
“Kyle, no don’t shut me out, please.” You placed a hand on his head trying to run your hands through his blonde curls to calm him down, but he moved himself away, suddenly. His eyes wide with panic as he backed himself into the corner where your bed met the wall, his eyebrows furrowed in a unreadable expression.
You stood back from the bed, giving him some room to breathe. You could read Kyle like a book so you could recognize when he was in distress.
“I know you said you don't like to talk about it…but you’re hurt Ky, please just talk to me.” Your words were calm and your voice remained low. You got on your knees, kneeling by the side of the bed to make yourself smaller and non threatening.
“I called you, and you didn’t answer…” he looked at you through his fingers, his breaths were shallow and panicked he could barely manage to get the words out, “I needed you.”
“Kyle I was asleep-“ You took a breath, you didn't want to be combative especially when he was so vulnerable "I'm sorry baby, I was asleep. I know you needed me."
“If you were there, maybe she wouldn’t have touched me...maybe that would have stopped her.” his voice was just above a whisper, but you heard him loud and clear.
Your heartbeat sped up, you had your assumptions but you were hoping that you were wrong, “Who ky?..who touched you?”
He sniffled, his entire face flushed red with despair. He couldn't hide away this time, he was right in front of you. “…My mother”
“She hit you? Is that how you hurt your lip?” You tilted your head to the side, giving him an understanding look.
He took a couple seconds before nodding, his head hung sadly as he tried to stop his tears from flowing.
“she touched me, y/n”
In seconds you felt tears well up in your own eyes, you understood exactly what he meant. It was like all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room as you both looked at each other in silence, you didn't know how to respond...you didn't know how to comfort him.
Kyle noticed the tears in your eyes and he was immediately regretful, his sobs breaking the silence, as he reached out to you.
"I never meant to cheat on you y/n! I'm sorry please don't leave me I didn't mean it-" He was cut off, hyperventilating and trying to catch his breath, distressing himself even more.
"Kyle no, i'm not mad at you! I could never be mad at you for that!" You pulled him into your arms, wrapping your arms tightly around him, his head resting on your chest where he could feel the quickness of your heartbeat, "You didn't do anything wrong, Ky. It's not your fault."
You rubbed his back with tender hands, repeating your words over and over as you held him close, what more could you say? Kyle felt immediate safeness in your warm embrace, you were a gentle rain that cleansed the worry in his mind.
You two stayed like that for at least 5 minutes, you just allowed Kyle to feel his feelings and cry as long as he needed to.
"My whole body hurts." He sniffled, his cries had turned into a dull, throbbing, sinus headache.
"I can get you some Advil." You removed your arms from around him, and cupped his face in your hands, meeting his teary brown eyes, "I'll get you some PJ's too." You left a soft kiss on his forehead, and Kyle melted into your touch. He truly felt loved and cared for, you knew exactly what he needed without him having to speak.
You let him go and handed him your water bottle, "Drink up baby, i'll be back."
You retrieved the pajamas he kept in your dorm from the drawers in your closet and grabbed two Advil from the medicine cabinet in your bathroom.
You presented him with the red flannel pants, a white t-shirt and two blue pills which he took gratefully.
After he was changed, he laid down next to you letting the breeze of the fan by your bed cool him down.
You both lied there, staring up at the glow in the dark stars on your ceiling "...do you want to talk about it Ky?"
Kyle took a few seconds, “not tonight, please....i'm exhausted, y/n."
“I understand, Ky. Whenever you're ready, i'll listen okay?"
He nodded, thankful that you would never try to push him, "Thank you y/n for everything, I love you"
"I love you too, blondie. Get some rest, you need it."
Kyle just nodded in agreement.
As both of your eyes grew heavy, Kyle curled into your side, resting his head on the warmth of your chest. He brought his hand up, caressing the pearl on the necklace he had given you with his thumb for his own comfort. He was pleasantly surprised that you had kept it on, and eternally grateful for how much love you showed him.
In the darkness of his mind, you appeared as a warm ray of light, and he was more than happy to be back in your arms, where he could leave his worries behind.

more info under the cut !
Noel has always been number 1, the favourite child. His parent's preferred him to his brother, Madison, leading them to dedicate all of their resources into making him the best musician he could be. He became self centered, subtly belittling Madison, ensuring that he would always remain on top. He still however, constantly appeared as the perfect son and the perfect boy.
After Noel was accepted into Royal Sword Academy, furthering his parent's favoritism, further pushing Madison into the shadows. Madison grew to resent Noel, yet school was an escape for him.
When Noel suddenly and unexpectedly transferred from Royal Sword Academy to Night Raven College, he appeared to want to spend all of his time with Madison, appearing as just a clingy twin brother. He instantly became more popular than Madison, with better grades and a much more open personality. Noel surprisingly fit into Night Raven College perfectly, near replacing Madison.
Not long after transferring, Noel began working in the Mostro Lounge as a singer, using magic to play multiple instruments at once as a sort of one-man band.
Unique Magic: "Tell Me More"
Noel likes interesting things and hates not knowing things about people, so he uses his unique magic to find out everything. He uses it on most people he meets. Sometimes, he struggles to process all of the information he learns at once, leaving him with a near constant headache. womp womp :/
Additional Info!
Even without his Unique Magic, Noel has incredible pattern noticing skills. He can work out lots of things about people just by talking to them.
Noel does not get along well with Vil.
Most of his songs are written about people he knows.

Lots of things happening this year. What I want to draw attention to first is the influx of glam metal (or hair metal). Heavy metal as a genre had existed for a few decades by this point, mostly branching off of the blues and psychedelic rock of the late 1960's. To avoid going on an overly-long tangent about metal, I'll leave it at that for now. Glam metal has its roots in the heavy metal sound while also (as the name would suggest) taking additional influences from the glam rock of the 1970's. MTV was very kind to this style of music, and glam metal reached a level of fame where you didn't have to be deep in the metal scene to be exposed to. Other subgenres like thrash and death metal would also grow in popularity around this time, but only to those who were aware of what was going on. Metallica would have to wait to breach the underground and MTV would probably have a hard time getting middle America on board with Necrophagia. So while there was a lot going on in metal throughout the 80s, there's a reason why when most people think of "80s metal", there's a very specific image that comes with that.
But that isn't to suggest that rock music in the mainstream was able to escape controversy by featuring more hairspray and less corpse paint, because there's another moment in music history that will culminate this year. In 1985, the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) put together a list called the "Filthy Fifteen", which listed fifteen songs thought to be inappropriate and damaging towards traditional family values. Songs on the list include Prince's Darling Nikki (which seemed to have raised the most ire out of the PMRC's co-founder, Tipper Gore), Mötley Crüe's Bastard, Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take It, and Cyndi Lauper's She Bop. A senate hearing over the matter of explicit lyrics was held in 1985, with musicians Frank Zappa, John Denver, and Twisted Sister's Dee Snider speaking out in opposition to censorship. There is a lot behind this conflict, both inside the courtroom and outside, so I'm aware that I'm giving a very fly-over view of the events for the sake of this poll. I'll just mention that these hearings were sometimes dubbed "The Porn-Rock Hearings", the outcry from these concerned parents groups fit really well in Reagan's America, and Zappa gave this absolute bomb of a quote that has been sitting with me a lot as of late:
"Bad facts make bad law, and people who write bad laws are, in my opinion, more dangerous than songwriters who celebrate sexuality. Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religious Thought, and the Right to Due Process for composers, performers and retailers are imperiled if the PMRC and the major labels consummate this nasty bargain."
There are so many good quotes, so I linked to the Full Video and Transcript
To make a long story unfortunately short, something of a compromise was reached by requiring musicians and labels to put "parental advisory" stickers on their albums, alerting potential consumers of the "objectionable" material within. Some musicians found the label as a loss for free speech and another example of the U.S. government deciding whose voices get to be considered moral or not. Other musicians predicted that the parental advisory sticker would only make their music more appealing to young people. You probably didn't need me to tell you this, but Tipper Gore and the PMRC did not stop the "moral downfall of America", if such a thing could even be quantified.
So now we all have little black and white stickers on our albums, yay. But this is far from the last time we'll see a major court case over music and obscenity. But we'll go over that next decade.
