Jamie’s good at following instructions. Roy tells him to jump, he jumps. Roy tells him to run suicide sprints until he pukes, he runs (he pukes). Roy tells him to stay still so Roy can tie him to a bike and use him as a mush-dog for a morning, he does.  (Roy wasn’t expecting that last one to work if he’s being honest. It was only once he’d watched Jamie wrap the rope around his own waist, then blink at him in earnest expectation while he stood frozen in bemused perplexity, did he realise the depth of the hole he’d dug.) So Roy had thought that following the simple instructions of, oh say, a recipe book, would be well within the little prick’s range of ability.  Jokes on him. “You measure the chocolate chips with your heart man.” Roy has his hand locked around Jamie’s forearm, forcefully preventing him from emptying the entire bag into the mixer. He knows that if Jamie actually wanted to break his grip he could do so with ease, so it says something about his higher-order thinking that he just pouts at Roy instead. “No, Muppet, you measure them with a fucking measuring cup. It’s right there in the name and all.”

Girldad Rosekiller vs. Girldad Wolfstar: Selling Girl Scout Cookies

(Yes I'm aware the Girl Scouts are an American thing. Indulge me.)

Rosekiller:

They aren't so much "selling" the cookies, as they are threatening people to buy them in support of their daughter "Or else".

Some Dude: "Nah, sorry man, but I gotta sell my own kid's cookies." Barty, pulling a knife out of fucking nowhere: "You'll buy the damn cookies or the only thing you'll be selling is your own severed hands."

Short, Sweet, and highly effective.

Wolfstar:

They have a whole plan. They used to just go to James first because this man will just buy every single one of those fucking cookies with no buyer's remorse, but Regulus has a firm ban on allowing any more than 3 boxes in the house at any given moment because they just had palets of the damned things sitting in their cupboard and now he gets physically ill at the very thought of anything other than thin mints.

So instead, Remus has a sale plan that he and Sirius created. It lays out the best locations, and with their encouragement, their daughter is very easily one of the best salespeople in the business.

Sounds normal right?

Wrong.

Because even a well-thought-out plan can be somewhat derailed based on Sirius's influence alone.

Let me set the scene:

[[On a sale day, Sirius and their daughter are sitting at the breakfast table before Remus wakes up. Sirius drinks some bougie iced espresso drink he made, and she has a plate of smiley-face pancakes out in front of her.]] Sirius: "So what do you say when someone starts to walk close to the table?" Their daughter, smiling up at him: "Hello, would you like to buy some cookies?" Sirius, nodding: "Good. Now, what do you say when they say no?" Their daughter: "Please sir, my mum just died of cancer." Sirius, grinning proudly: "That's my girl." Remus, having just walked into the kitchen, his hair a mess, and his jumper hiked up due to the hand scratching an itch on his stomach: "Please tell me that you did not teach our daughter to use Cancer as a sales tactic..." Sirius: "Of course I did! It's brilliant!" *She raises her hand from her seat* Remus, with a soft sigh: "Yes, Angel?" Her: "But I have two dads. I never knew my mom." Sirius: "Ah, but that's the trick, Darling." *He pokes her nose.* "Sales is all about the blatant exploitation of other people's emotions in order to make a profit." *looking to Remus* "Tell me I'm wrong." *Remus breathes out a resigned laugh and shakes his head incredulously* Remus: "It's the fact that I genuinely can't that upsets me the most..."

idk. anticommunists in america have been absolutely perfecting undermining everything we could try to do here for a whole century. they know all the strategies and will stoop to the absolute lowest u can to sabatoge these efforts. like even if u get all the permits in order and everything if u look even vaguely too black or communist the businesses who donate are all in on it. they will make you spend an entire day sorting through a palet of exploded boxes and expired cans to find whatevers salvageable and shrug and say oh well we gave u what we had. then u look at the local veterans org and theyre getting shit that looks straight off the shelves.

Getting back into the swing of doing paint tutorials- I pulled a Spider out of a salvage box and I figured I'd do a quick and dirty davion scheme! This is the parade paint job for the First Davion Guards, AKA quintessential battletech 'good' guy mechs.

Paints you will need:

Black primer

Dark grey (citadel mechanicus standard grey)

Light grey (citadel dawnstone)

Off white (army painter spaceship armor)

Red (citadel mephiston red)

Light blue (citadel baharroth blue)

Green (citadel warpstone glow)

Gun metal (citadel leadbelcher)

Silver (citadel rune fang steel)

Dark wash (citadel drakenhof nightshade)

Citadel akhelian green cintrast

Citadel blood angels red contrast

Things you might want

Khaki (citadel zandri dust)

Fleshy orange (citadel ratskin flesh)

White (army painter matt white)

Dark green (citadel Caribana green)

Light red (citadel evil sunz scarlet)

Yellow (citadel averland sunset)

I started by basing my mini with my normal desert badlands basing scheme (paint base in glue, sprinkle on basing sand and let cure. Paint on more glue and stick down some aquarium gravel) and then priming the whole thing black with brush-on primer.

Once the primer is finished drying, load some of your dark grey up on a fat drybrush, wipe off slightly less than most of the paint, and then apply the remainder to the model in long up and down strokes. All of the panels should be grey, with some black showing in crevices and hard to reach recesses of the model. Next, repeat this process with your light grey paint, but wipe off more and apply less liberally- you want the darker grey color to remain in most places with the edges and raised details highlighted in grey. Finally, drybrush the model one last time with your off-white color only in the areas that will catch the light most like the head, torso, shoulders, the vectoring fins on the mech's back, and the outstretched left knee.

Now that the mech has been presented in greyscale, we can make it blue. Akhelian green is going to be doing the majority of the heavy lifting in this paint scheme- I find it to be a pretty easy contrast paint to work with. Apply it undiluted to the model, looking to spread it in a single coat like a thick wash, and then leave it to dry for 20 minutes. Afterwards, you might want to brighten the blue up in places as I did- drybrush on some light blue in the same areas you used off-white earlier.

At this point, I got a little excited and decided to do the Davion stripes. Start with your red, pretty well thinned on your palet, and a thin detail brush. To make this easy on ourselves, we're going to look for vertical panels on the left side of the mech's torso and leg and basically connect all of those with a straight line. In the case of the Spider, the easy ones are the shoulder and that panel that runs down the upper thigh. Apply a thin edge highlight of red along those panels and then carefully continue the line down the rest of the leg, terminating at the ankle. If your hand is steady enough, run a thin line of red around the mech's ankle where the vertical line ends. Then, go back with your off-white and using the red line you made already as a guide, run a parallel stripe down the outside edge of the red (if you swap these battletech nerds will dunk on you online).

At this point, I also striped the ridge running down the Spider's helmet, but it's not super necessary.

Now that we've got our blue sorted out, we've got a bit of a 'draw the rest of the owl' step. First, you're going to want to go back over any of the parts of the model that you want to be exposed mechanical elements with your dark grey. I painted the joints in the legs, the shoulders, the lasers and the big vent on the chest, the 'chin strap' under the spider's canopy glass, and the jump jets in this color. Then, wash the grey with your favorite dark wash- I really like the deep blue of drakenhof nightshade but something like nuln oil will also work well for this. Finally, apply a light drybrush of your light grey to the shaded grey. If a part is too recessed to easily drybrush, you can leave it as is or do use a small brush to carefully highlight it. You should also add a small dot of green to the inside of each of the laser barrels at this point.

Next, paint the mech's canopy glass silver. Once that's dry, paint over the silver with blood angels red or any other colorful contrast paint for a vibrant metallic color.

If you're following along with my desert basing, paint the sand on the base khaki and the larger pebbles with your fleshy orange. Then paint over everything with agarros dunes contrast or a dark brown wash like agrax earthshade.

And with that you have a Spider that's fully ready for tabletop with 3 colors, shading, and a textured base. There's still a couple more things we can do if you have more time and patience that I'll detail below.

To apply some quick and dirty jeweling to the lasers, start by painting a half circle of light green on each barrel, focused on one of the bottom corners. Paint the recess of the barrel with a dot of dark green and put a tiny little dot of white opposite the half circle of green, which should now be more of a crescent shape with with dark spot in the center.

While the white is still in your pallet, you can also highlight the parts of the off white stripes on the mech most exposed to overhead light like the lower thigh, knee, and shoulder. Do the same thing with the red stripe using a light red as well.

At this point I also added unit numbering to the mech's shoulder. Basic numbers are a really good way to practice your fine control and I try to consistently add a couple to each of my projects. Use your off-white well thinned and a fine detail brush, lock your hand holding the model against your hand holding the brush just below the wrists, and then draw the paintbrush 'downwards' with a pulling motion. This should keep you your line relatively straight and fine.

While you can keep the jump jets on your mech dark I prefer to paint mine with some orange in them. Using the fleshy orange from earlier, paint most of the interior of each jump jet, then add a dot of yellow at the very deepest recess of each one.

Finally, let's add some hazard stripes to the mech. Pick out a few areas near joints or vents that seem like a bad place for an Astech's hand to go and paint in a thick 'edge highlight' of black. Then, going back to yellow find the center of the line and add a diagonal tickmark there. You may need to go over this more than twice to get a strong color depending on your yellow. Once your centerline is marked, work out towards the edges, painting another ticmark at regular intervals until you hit the ends of the Black.

i identify as a lesbian and that's not wrong because I like woman in a profoundly gay way and I recognize that I'm going to be gendered female because of my appearance and I'm apathetic enough about it to allow it except in my presence and sometimes even then but the way I feel about gender In General extends completely to all other aspects of my life like sure woman are hot in a way that I don't typically feel about men but also I do find butch masculinity wildly attractive when it's done on purpose and I think it's just that I like when people color outside the lines if I'm gonna be a weird queer freak then I'm gonna be a Weird Queer Freak and I've become So About It that I'm like... offended?? when people assume I'm doing something regular and normal?? like it's very very important to me that everyone knows I am doing All This aggressively On Purpose I Know that many things would make me more paletable to Most People but I'm not interested in being more palteable I am interested in finding other weird queer freaks!!!!

anyway all that to say that I sometimes get Quite In My Head about the fact that I am doing this Situationship with a straight man who is simultaneously 1. very comfortable with his gender and sexuality as a straight man 2. wildly attracted to me and 3. not thinking of me as a woman because both of the people IN the situationship are very aware this is all very queer I am aware that it Appears oftentimes to be just yknow regular heterosexuality

Well, Diminutives (like V) or Abbreviations (like MJ) are common kinds of nicknames, they're definitely not the only kind. Sometimes someone does A Thing and that's their new nickname in my head.

I could do something like "Vio" or "Viol", and while that sounds cool, it feels kinda cheap to just use another diminutive?

In the "describe your mutuals" post you were Fins & Questions, for sea animals and the Ask Box (and a play on the idk part of the url). That kinda goes with the whole nickname via actions thing, but that was a descriptor not a nickname.

There's also the derivative route where it kinda mutates, which is actually how I started going by Nebula online.

So mixing some of those up, I'd probably suggest something both derived from Violet while also related to what you like? Normally I'd wait until you do something comical and I'd make that an teasing sort of nickname, but in this case I can't do that on demand

So...

Voe is a little far off sound wise, Vele is a nifty one. Vly refers to a kind of Marsh of sorts, which isn't flattering but at the same time I do sort of associate you with that kinda dark green color palet? (I don't know why, it's just the first color that comes to mind of you).

So something along those lines, or Viol as an additional diminutive.

2. [is your room messy or clean?] Messy af, there are so many clothes on the floor and also I need to vacuum since I am literally allergic to dust—

3. [what color are your eyes?] Ooh. Um. Well. There’s actually lore. When I was younger, I told everyone that my eyes were green and they all told me that I was wrong because my eyes looked brown and then I asked my mom and she was like “they’re hazel” and so for a while I believed that they were hazel and then in middle school or late elementary school I just fucking gave up on it and then they were just whole ass brown. BUT ALSO OKAY IM PISSED AT THIS. YOU KNOW PUNNETT SQUARES RIGHT. THEYRE LIES. THEYRE FUCKING LIES. Both of my parents have light green eyes, and mine are literally brown. So for a while, I genuinely semi-convinced myself that I was adopted because the fucking punnett squares lied because there’s no way you get a dominant trait from two recessives. Anyways I have the green life hoodie and when I wore it (its so comfy I would still wear it all the time but it is about a zillion degrees out and I like to sweat significantly less also my school doesn’t have AC which is genuinely criminal. i’m so pissed about it because it’s like literally torture) the green in my eyes was more visible so my eyes were def more hazel then but my clothes palete normally consists of black so they normally look brown. Doesn’t help that my eyes and my hair are normally the exact same color.

[do you like your name? why?] like birth name? no. it hasn’t fit me in so long. and when i tried to convince myself i wasn’t genderqueer I reminded myself of when I was in third grade there was this girl in my church choir and I would look in the mirror and wish i had her name because I did not look like my name. like.
