queer short film: "راكب راكب إنترنت | wifi rider"
queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i'm featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
youtube
jordan | 13 minutes | 2020 | documentary short audio in arabic; english subtitles embedded
راكب راكب إنترنت | wifi rider, directed by roxy rezvany, introduces us to shukri lawrence, a young, queer palestinian-armenian fashion designer and photographer. shukri, who was born in east jerusalem and now lives in jordan, came to fame through his instagram account @wifirider, which he created as a teenager to share his style, fashion, and takes on pop culture. the film, shot on 16mm, also integrates footage from shukri’s early life as well, with shukri’s voiceover to tell us about his story and the clothing label named trashy clothing that he founded with his co-designer omar braika, who is also palestinian. the displacement and threat of state violence that shukri faces is felt throughout the docu-short; he begins by telling us how as a child he dreamed of moving to france, where he thought he would find freedom from his experience in israel. however, over the course of his adolescence, shukri began to understand that while he, like all palestinians currently, has no real home, he prefers his life to still be grounded in the arab world where he still has community in the palestinian diaspora. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end

Since this film debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in February, where it won both the Panorama Audience Award and the Best Documentary Award, in this country we have seen an active service member self-immolate in protest of the U.S. Army's part in the genocide currently happening in Gaza. Despite the act being broadcast on livestream, the media misrepresented his intentions, and, in what seemed like minutes, the country moved on. In a world where video footage as a tool to speak truth to power seems to have lost its efficacy, No Other Land exists more as a form of resistance. As a form of witness. As proof of the Palestinian people's unwavering endurance, and as a document of their very existence.

They Do Not Exist (1974) by Mustafa Abu Ali (watch)
from PalestineCinema.com:
Salvaged from the ruins of Beirut after 1982, Abu Ali's early film has only recently been made available. Shooting under extraordinary conditions, the director, who worked with Godard on his Ici et Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere), and founded the PLO's film division, covers conditions in Lebanon's refugee camps, the effects of Israeli bombardments, and the lives of guerrillas in training camps. They Do Not Exist is a stylistically unique work which demonstrates the intersection between the political and the aesthetic. Now recognised as a cornerstone in the development of Palestinian cinema, the film only received its Palestine premiere in 2003, when a group of Palestinian artists "smuggled" the director to a makeshift cinema in his hometown of Jerusalem (into which Israel bars his entry). Abu Ali, who saw his film for the first time in 20 years at this clandestine event noted: "We used to say 'Art for the Struggle', now it's 'Struggle for the Art'"

(Cw: death)
Voices from Gaza
instagram
Summary:
A short documentary by video journalist, Wizard Bisan, about the conditions of a Palestinian area called Khan Younis that was left in ruins, where almost every single building was destroyed. The people who were taking shelter in Rafah after Israel’s invasion have now returned to Khan Younis after the state withdrew their troops.
The video footage showcases rubble, a small portion of the bodies that were found in the mass graves, bombed buildings that have barely survived, bullet casings and holes, and the makeshift renewal efforts in acquiring shelter. The documentary also makes comparisons between the current state of the cities and the state of the cities back in October 2023.
