Diana Buttu speaks to Palestinian survivors of torture by Israeli Forces
Abu Hamza told me about months of torture, of being blindfolded, with his body folded – knees and head to the ground for days on end; of being forced to drink urine and salt water whenever he requested water; of being denied food only to be then forced to eat food with maggots (he lost 30 kg – about 66 lbs) during his three-month abduction; of only being permitted to shower once every 50 days; of being forced to wear the same clothes for three straight months; of being beaten with a baton to the point of unconsciousness several times; and of Israeli soldiers breaking his hands and then making him crawl on all fours. “They enjoyed it,” he said. “I could hear them laughing and howling as they beat us.”

MAY 15 2024 - A Palestinian human rights lawyer with Addameer on the hardships and necessity of providing free legal aid and documenting human rights abuses.
"According to the Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association Addameer, there are 9,500 Palestinian political prisoners currently being held in detention." "We know that an alarming number of people have been forcibly disappeared and put in the two main military camps set up for this purpose: Sde Teiman and Anatot. Advocates are banned from visiting detainees, and the Red Cross hasn’t gained access to them either. " "We also know by official sources that more than 12 prisoners have been killed and — according to autopsies conducted by Israeli authorities — five were the result of torture. This number is only what has been officially announced." "In every instance of an uprising in the occupied territories, the IDF will make mass arrests to silence Palestinians raising awareness. With the genocide in Gaza, there have been more than 5,300 detainees held — which is an unprecedented number. People have been indefinitely detained without charges and without ever being presented in front of a court. Charges can be sparked by very simple things such as “incitement” on social media. The rationale behind these campaigns is simply to silence and repress." "Also, new legislation has been passed regarding “unlawful combat,” which means detainees in Gaza can be held indefinitely without charges, and lawyers can be barred for at least six months before being allowed to conduct a visit."

Free Palestinian detainee Kassam Atwan before and after his detention in Israeli prisons.
Investigations by Western journalists, including those from The Intercept, reveal that out of the 300 names released by the Israeli government for its truce captives talks, 233 names have not been convicted of any crimes; they are merely categorized as "under arrest," also known as "administrative detention." Most of these individuals are teenage boys, with 124 being under 18 years old.

Human rights groups and international organisations have alleged widespread abuse of inmates detained by Israel in raids in the occupied West Bank, which Palestinians want as the core of a future independent state along with Gaza.

The Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club:
A preliminary summary of confirmed arrests in the West Bank today since the start of the military operation announced by the occupation this morning, 28/08/2024: The "israeli" occupation forces have arrested at least 20 citizens since the start of the military operation announced in the West Bank. This figure includes confirmed cases as the raids continue throughout various areas of the West Bank, and it is subject to change hourly. Notably, among those arrested are children. The occupation forces continue to conduct field investigations in towns and refugee camps in the governorates of Tulkarem, Jenin, Tubas, and Ramallah. These investigations have involved dozens of citizens and have been accompanied by severe and horrifying abuses and violations against the people, leaving visible signs of torture and mistreatment on the bodies of those released later. Additionally, the occupation announced today the arrest of dozens of workers present in the 1948 occupied territories. It is noted that the "israeli" occupation forces have arrested over 10,300 citizens from the West Bank, including Al-Quds, since the beginning of the ongoing genocide war and comprehensive aggression against our people.

hey you guys know that the word criminal is not meaningful as an identifier right? like calling someone a criminal gives next to no meaningful information about them? and the label of criminal is merely a function of the state which assigns it?

Israel stepped up its arrest campaign in the occupied West Bank and mistreatment of prisoners in its overstuffed jails.
Former Palestinian detainees recount systematic mistreatment in Israeli jails by guards, including forced kneeling, lack of necessities, and torture. The rising number of Palestinian detainees, including women and children, reflects a concerning trend.

"After four days in detention, we were released. We were handcuffed and blindfolded. The Israeli soldiers kept torturing us. They even urinated on us. I was beaten, kicked and battered all over my body...
After that, we were released and as we started walking off on the asphalt, they threw grenades and fired a drone missile on us. Some of my men were killed. I ran for my life and miraculously survived."

horrific article from the bbc broke last about israel detaining healthcare workers, stripping them naked, and beating them for days on end. we already knew israel was doing this to palestinian detainees, but to be deliberately targeting medical personnel--doctors and nurses and medical assistants on the ground trying to heal wounded palestinians--and then literally torturing them are on levels of cruelty i can't even begin to compute.
a humanitarian law expert in this article calls the footage coming out of this "concerning." i call it the terms racists love to throw baselessly at arabs: barbaric and inhumane.

Meir Baruchin, a 62-year-old Israeli history teacher and anti-war activist, revealed how he was arrested in October and imprisoned in solitary confinement as a "high-risk detainee" in November for "intent to commit an act of treason" and "intent to disrupt public order" after he posted a photo of Palestinians killed by the Israeli army on 7 October in opposition to the war on Gaza.

One by one, we are forced into a truck. Someone who is not moving lands on my lap. I fear that a soldier has thrown a corpse onto me, as a form of torture, but I am scared to speak. I whisper, “Are you alive?” “Yes, man,” the person says, and I sigh with relief. When the truck stops, we hear what sound like gunshots. I no longer feel my body. The soldiers give off a smell that reminds me of coffins. I find myself wishing that a heart attack would kill me. At our next stop, we kneel outside again. I start to wonder whether the Israeli military is showing us off. When a young man next to me cries, “No Hamas, no Hamas!,” I hear kicks until he falls silent. Another man, maybe talking to himself, says quietly, “I need to be with my daughter and pregnant wife. Please.” My eyes fill with tears. I imagine Maram and our kids on the other side of the checkpoint. They don’t have blankets or even enough clothes. I can hear female soldiers, chatting and laughing. Suddenly, someone kicks me in the stomach. I fly back and hit the ground, breathless. I cry out in Arabic for my mother. I am forced back onto my knees. There is no time to feel scared. A boot kicks me in the nose and mouth. I feel that I am almost finished, but the nightmare is not over. Back in the truck, my body hurts so much that I wish I had no hands or shoulders. After what feels like ninety minutes of driving, we are taken off the truck and shoved down some stairs. A soldier cuts my plastic handcuffs. “Both hands on the fence,” he says. This time, the soldier ties my hands in the front. A sigh of relief. I am escorted about fifteen metres. Finally, someone speaks to me in what sounds like native Palestinian Arabic. He seems to be my father’s age. At first, I hate this man. I think he is a collaborator. But later I hear him described as a shawish—a detainee like us, with little choice but to work for his jailers. “Let me help you,” he says. The shawish dresses me in new clothes and walks me inside the fence. When I raise my blindfolded head, I get blurry glimpses of a corrugated metal roof. We are in some kind of detention center; soldiers walk around, watching us. The shawish unrolls what looks like a yoga mat and covers me with a thin blanket. I place my bound hands behind my head, as a pillow. My arms sear with pain, but my body slowly warms. This is the end of day one.
