Born Behind Bars by Padma Venkatraman was an awesome read! It’s middle grade, but tackled really tough topics like justice, incarceration, homelessness, and racism with a whole lot of care and respect. I adored that the main character, a 9 year old boy named Kabir, was written as having complex thoughts and feelings. Children are often treated as if they don’t have complex thoughts and feelings. Excellent book. Read it in two sittings!

Smooth sailing over the holidays and Safe Harbor in 2025!
It’s almost time to launch SAFE HARBOR – my sixth novel and my second novel-in-verse! I can’t believe how fast 2024 has flown! If you haven’t ordered your copy yet, here is the link: https://buff.ly/3XLA0eK And… here below is the photo of the seal who inspired the novel, “lying like a sack of rice” on the sands of the beach near my home, in my Ocean State. This seal was fine – but of course, as…

Random Book Recommendation # 1: Climbing the Stairs/Padma Venkatraman
Tumblr media
Blurb: During World War II and the last days of British occupation in India, fifteen-year-old Vidya dreams of attending college. But when her forward-thinking father is beaten senseless by the British police, she is forced to live with her grandfather's large traditional family, where the women live apart from the men and are meant to be married off as soon as possible. Vidya's only refuge becomes her grandfather's upstairs library, which is forbidden to women. There she meets Raman, a young man also living in the house who relishes her intellectual curiosity. But when Vidya's brother decides to fight with the hated British against the Nazis, and when Raman proposes marriage too soon, Vidya must question all she has believed in.
For people who like: historical fiction with a well-researched setting, strong woman characters, coming-of-age in complicated times

I figured since I’ve been complaining I should mention the contemporary books I have actually read and enjoyed so shoutout to Heretics Anonymous by Katie Henry for being the only YA novel that came close to my actual experience of Catholic school. The Possibilities of Sainthood by Donna Freitas isn’t as much of a heavy hitter but I enjoyed it when I was in high school. From All False Doctrine by Alice Degan and Dayspring by Anthony Oliveira felt like they were written for me personally.
I know I’m an information professional but I swear I just typed the phrase “why is Christian fiction so bad” into duck duck go

The Disability Library
I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!
As always, if there are any at all that you want me to add, please just say. I'm always looking for more!
Edit 20/10/2023: You can now suggest books using the google form at the bottom!

YA Pacific WW2 Books
Today marks the 78th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, 3 days after the bombing of Hiroshima.
I've had a list of WW2 books in a file for a while. I noticed the Pacific side of the war is much less represented in fiction, but there are still many promising-looking books out there. These range from stories in Japan-occupied territories, to Jews in Shanghai, bombs in Australia, and stories of the atomic bombs in Japan and internment of Japanese-Americans.
Let me know if you've read any of these!
When My Name Was Keoko by Linda Sue Park (Korea) The Hundred Choices Department Store by Ginger Park (Korea) The Songbird and the Rambutan Tree by Lucille Abendanon (Indonesia) [releases in 2024] Anya's War by Andrea Alban Gosline (China) Little Paradise by Gabrielle Wang (Australia - China) The Forgotten Pearl by Belinda Murrell (Australia) The Sky We Shared by Shirley Reva Vernick (Japan - United States) Barefoot Gen by Keiji Nakazawa (Japan) [manga] The Girl with the White Flag Tomiko Higa, Dorothy Britton (Japan) The Last Cherry Blossom by Kathleen Burkinshaw (Japan) Hunt for the Bamboo Rat by Graham Salisbury (United States - Philippines) [more in the series] Beneath the Wide Silk Sky by Emily Inouye Huey (Japanese-American) They Called Us Enemy by George Takei (Japanese-American) [graphic novel] Weedflower by Cynthia Kadohata (Japanese-American) We Are Not Free - Traci Chee (Japanese-American) Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman (India)

i've cried once. just once.
anyways if u like hurt no comfort pls consider reading the book The Bridge Home by Padma Venkatraman <3
this is not assuming your reactions to all types of media are the same, it’s just I can’t split everything up so just assume its all one big category (I might do smaller polls for each, we’ll see)
pls reblog for sample size etc
follow for more occasional useless polls :)
