I figured since I’ve been complaining I should mention the contemporary books I have actually read and enjoyed so shoutout to Heretics Anonymous by Katie Henry for being the only YA novel that came close to my actual experience of Catholic school. The Possibilities of Sainthood by Donna Freitas isn’t as much of a heavy hitter but I enjoyed it when I was in high school. From All False Doctrine by Alice Degan and Dayspring by Anthony Oliveira felt like they were written for me personally.
I know I’m an information professional but I swear I just typed the phrase “why is Christian fiction so bad” into duck duck go
#part of the problem is that when you ask folks to list off The Greats of Christian literature#we are generously stopping in the 70s#particularly where the Anglicans are concerned#and now that we’re long past the age of Lewis and L’Engle#it seems that no one has stepped into their shoes#you’ve got Lamb and Polydoros and Vishny and Blum#and SK Ali and Samira Ahmed and Parma#Venkatraman all doing incredible work#and that’s just off the top of my head#and they’re all with mainstream publishers#I really do have a suspicion that I can once again blame my frustrations on the stranglehold#that the evangelical Christian publishing houses have on quote unquote Christian fiction in the US#anyway if anyone has encountered a single interesting Anglican in fiction after 2000 please call me#mg says stuff#whoops that should be Padma Venkatraman stupid autocorrect
