I just watched Puss in Boots: The Last wish and oh my god it is fantastic. The entire movie kept my attention and it was so colourful and beautiful animated I couldn't believe my eyes at how gorgeous it was, but my favorite thing in the movie is the fear that puss has for death. It was *horrifying* every time I saw the wolf because I could feel the dread and the hopelessness that puss felt, the agonizing f e a r. I loved it, it was so real to me and I wish I have a whole other movie just with that dark atmosphere with his fear, his anxiety and the panic because I also felt like I was in his shoes, it was awful yet these little scenes where he was afraid are the most interesting to me, beautifully done and I hope we get more and more movies like this one.

something about the way Kitty can't help but end up trusting and loving others despite all the ways she has been hurt, and her own insistence that she does not trust others. The way that she so naturally falls into trusting Puss when he shows a modicum of honesty and genuine emotion to her.

I think Kitty is someone who has a lot of love in her heart, a fact she hates about herself because it leads to her getting burned quite often. She feels like she cannot ever truly practice what she preaches and just stay away from caring. Even, towards the end, she gives up her wish to Puss, not because she thinks he deserves it more, but because at that point, even wishing for someone to trust feels like a failure on the part of herself to just learn her damn lesson and stay away.

Which is why it is so important that she finally gets what she needs through Puss. That she witnesses him fighting for his life instead of running, fighting for his right to love her for the short time on this earth that he has left. She needed to hear this from somebody, that she is worth caring about. More than just a cute pet that looses its luster when it starts scratching the furniture, more than just a fleeting fancy abandoned the moment something goes wrong. She finally has someone tell her she is worth recieving the love and trust she so easily gives, in equal measure.

HCs: Puss dealing with anxiety post-TLW (ft. insomnia)

As someone with GAD, anxiety is the worst at night. Falling asleep and/or staying asleep can be an absolute nightmare (no pun intended). That being said, how would our favorite fearless hero handle such a situation?

In the daytime, when Puss begins to feel that familiar tightness in his chest, distractions are everywhere. Perrito rambling on about god knows what, Kitty offering to spar with him, etc. But in the dark stillness of the night, when everyone else is asleep, there are fewer things the cat can comfort himself with. If he can’t fall asleep, he gets frustrated, which then starts the domino effect as the minutes turn to hours and he still can’t sleep.

With every minute he spends practically forcing himself to go to sleep, his nerves shoot more and more. Suddenly, he’s shaking almost violently, his body feeling cold yet no blanket is enough to warm him. His mind screams at him that something’s wrong, that he needs to get up, but he’s so, so tired and his body just doesn’t have the strength. He just wants to sleep.

One night it becomes too much to bear, and without thinking, Puss throws himself out of bed and steps out onto the main deck of their ship, desperately hoping to get some air. His body wracks with tremors and his eyes are wide but so heavy, but the idea of going back to his bed makes him want to throw up.

He’s not sure how long he’s out there, mindlessly pacing and wringing his paws, when he hears a soft, “Puss?”

His head whips around to see Kitty, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she walks over, “¿Qué te pasa?”

Puss wants to lie, the impulse familiar to him, but he’s just too exhausted to think of a fib right now, and instead holds himself pathetically as he shakes like a leaf, “…can’t sleep,”

There’s a moment of quiet, and then Kitty takes his paws into her own, stilling them to the best of her ability. When Puss meets her face, there’s warmth in her expression, and even more so: understanding.

Kitty takes him back into the cabin, and the next thing he knows, he’s lying with her in her bed. He almost protests, telling her he already tried that, it did nothing, until she presses her chest against his back and wraps her arms around him, purring softly.

And Puss is left to assume that the woman is some kind of enchantress, because the way her warmth envelops his body, chasing away the tremors until he finally stops shaking, is nothing short of magical.

Perrito hops up to join them, spinning around a few times before lying down with a deep sigh, his chin resting on Puss’s thigh.

And now, with his heartbeat finally slowing down — with Kitty’s purrs and murmured whispers of comfort and Perrito’s gentle weight on his leg, his tiny body moving up and down with every breath he takes — Puss’ mind begins to pleasantly cloud over, any and all worries that he may have had already long forgotten. He’s only lying down for five minutes before he finally slips into sleep.

The animation in this movie is absolutely stunning

The relationship between Goldilocks and the three bears is absolutely precious and I love the found family dynamic

Death has such an eerie and honestly terrifying presence about him.

It really shows you a physical picture of how you can never escape death because Death catches up to everyone eventually

Perrito is precious and I hope whoever his first owners were die a painful death

The relationship between Puss and Kitty is wonderfully done and I love them together so much

Its nice to see Kitty finally learn to trust in others agian

I really enjoy Baby and Golide' s sibling rivalry. They act a lot like siblings. They bicker and fight but at the end of the day they love each other

Mama Bear is best mom

Even though death seems happy with his job, he also despises people who do not see the importance of the life they have.

It also displays his reasons for despising Puss.

Death doesn't think It's fair that Cats get so many lives while others only have one

So he is especially angry at Puss because not only does he have nine lives, but instead of being grateful and cherishing the fact that he has the privilege to get more chances of living life to the fullest, he just carelessly throws them away

Death also recognizes that Puss changes and lets him go at the end of the movie

Because Death sees that Puss has learned to cherish his life and is ready to live the last life that he has left to the fullest

Showing that even though Death is cruel, he can also be a fair player

On an unrelated note: Perrito cursing out the three bears was the funniest freaking thing I have ever seen

Details I noticed in The Last Wish pt 5

I know I said I was done but then I watched it again and now I have more

So I mentioned in a previous post how there's always a big build up before they show a character's face for the first time, but I realized the extent of it during this rewatch. In the very beginning, before Puss starts singing, they don't even show the face on the ice sculpture of him. They really want the first time the viewer sees his face to be when he starts singing

They also don't show Puss' face on the painting he vandalized of the Govenor until the spotlight goes on it. I know they did this for the funny dramatic reveal but it's really quite impressive that it wasn't in the shot sooner considering Puss was singing and dancing in front of it for quite some time now

The lady in a wheelchair who's on the left side of the crowd after he defeats the giant is also at the party

Speaking of when Puss defeats the giant, he winks at the crowd as it falls behind him

The song he starts singing when he gets hit with the bell is called "The Legend Will Never Die." This is one of the songs he sings when he's in the cave of lost souls that we catch the very tail end of

When Death shows up at the bar, Puss has his tongue out from drinking his leche. He does a blep a lot longer than I would in the presence of Death but when Death holds the shot glass up, you can see him put it away in the reflection on the glass

The scythe that cuts Puss in the bar fight is the one with his lives marked off

Mama Luna's house is on a peninsula jutting into the sea

During the montage of him at Mama Luna's, when he lays down on the rug for the first time he has his back claws out. They retract slightly when all the other cats come and squish him in but they're still visible

The white and cream cat who becomes acquaintances with Puss (the white and cream cat watches him on the litterbox and they nod at each other later) is the one on the litterbox when Mama Luna tells him that that's his bathroom. So they have canonly both watched each other poop... that's fun...

The statue of the Govenor that Papa Bear knocks over as they leave Del Mar has the Govenor with a foot on a bag of money. No wonder the people didn't like him

Mama Luna has matching blue socks with her cats. They have pink paw prints on the bottom. She also has yellow paw prints on her earrings

Goldi laughs when Papa stuffs Mama Luna into the piano

On the inside of the doors in Jack's treasure room, it says J.H.

When the crime family falls through the ceiling of Jack's factory, the stained glass window of him breaks and falls outside the room. Later when Jack's packing his bag, he steps on the glass that's now inside the room. A little consistency error

Also when Jack and the Serpent Sisters walk into the treasure room, the door stays wide open. No one goes to close it and it doesn't swing shut by itself. In the next shot we get of the door, it's fully closed. It doesn't really matter but it's still interesting that they can include all these little things but didn't have the door swing shut or smth while they're talking. it would have been an easy fix. oh well

When they show Kitty's wanted poster, there's a hiss with the background music. A clever way to add a bit more of her character without doing anything too big

The music they play during the chase after Puss, Perrito, and Kitty steal the map is Puss and Kitty's Flamenco. It's the same song they play when they're fighting for the map later and dance on each other's feet

"I'll get you, my kitties, and your little dog too." A wonderful Wizard of Oz reference by Jack that no one ever talks about

When they're looking at the map in the Dark Forest, Kitty pushes Puss out of the way so she can see what her path is. Except she pushes him by his face. And she pushes him so hard, he completely flips over. That had to have hurt

Goldi has leather stitching on the back of her blue corset-esque piece where it was let out to fit her better. It's probably the same one she was wearing when she broke into the bear's house all those years ago and they've just been adjusting it to fit her as she grows

This isn't so much a detail as it is a question. They posies just hit Team Friendship but they eat Jack's people. Just pull all the flesh off their bones in one go. Why did they respond differently? Maybe it's because they didn't have the map? Maybe it's because they could sense that Team Friendship's wishes were better than Jacks? idk

Before Puss runs off from the fight by the river and has a panic attack, you can see Death reflecting in his eyes

Death smiles as he watches him run into the forest

When Mama Bear suggests that maybe they could be happy without a wish, Goldi gives her a glare. She does not like that idea lol

Goldi also pulls a face when Perrito says she won the orphan lottery and Mama says, "I like his jib as well. Lets keep him."

During the final fight at the star for the map, Puss jumps off Goldi's face to grab it

This isn't so much a detail as it is something funny I like, but I love it when Kitty has the map during the final fight and is jumping confidently through the air... and then gets body slammed by a bear lol Like she's so small and she just got completely launched by a bear coming out of nowhere

Also when Jack is ignoring Nutmegan as she gets sucked into the star and he just ducks as an entire bear goes flying over his head. idk i just think the bears fighting in very unbearlike ways is funny

So Puss must be unbelievably strong because when Baby was being sucked into the star, it took two full grown bears and Goldi to save him but Puss does it by himself. He almost gets sucked in too for much longer than Baby and no one comes to help him; he's just holding onto the Gatito Blade with one hand. And then all by himself, using only rage, he gets his feet back on the ground and rejoins the fight. Like,,,, that must have been so hard

Death growls as he talks when Puss finally stares him down after telling him to pick up the scythe

This is only something I noticed during the last fight but I'm pretty sure it's true during the rest of the movie too. Death doesn't blink. He closes his eyes when making certain facial expressions but he doesn't blink. This is such a subtle but cool way to make him feel more unsettling and supernatural without the audience picking up on it

When Perrito's trying to do the cute eyes at Jack, he puts his head down for a second and you can see his shoulder blades sticking out through his sweater

Kitty always runs like she's in an anime. Like this

When Puss suggests "chomper" as a name for Perrito, Kitty shakes her head too

Someone used the Gatito Blade to pin Team Friendship's wanted poster to the mast of the ship they steal at the end

When Puss points at it, his claws are out too. He was so offended by that being their official team name now, he was moved to minor violence lol

I think Kitty was telling the truth when she said she never showed up to the wedding. And I have a couple of reasons why: (warning, its long)

1.) Her entire character arc is learning to trust. This includes opening up and being honest about herself and in this case: her past. So it makes no sense for the story if she just LIES about Santa Coloma, especially after making a big deal over it. If anything it would take away from the scene and her character when she finally open up.

2.) I think the only way they could have saved the relationship between Puss and Kitty naturally, after Puss left her at the altar. I kept thinking "how can they possibly save this relationship after what he did" and the answer the movie came up with was HILARIOUS! Her not showing up was the perfect answer to that conundrum.

3.) I think she was more mad she was proven right, than she was about him leaving her. That he did pick himself and his reputation over her. And he was so full of himself that he never checked on her after leaving. And she knows he didn't check up on her based on his reaction and the fact he never brought up her leaving. She's not like Puss, she knows about his adventures and what he's been up to. Thanks to his status as a legend, she knows about ALL of his adventures. But he doesn't know about hers, and didn't bother to find and confront her. That's how she knows he didn't know her side.

4.) Her being mad at him, was because she thinks he betrayed her intentionally and maliciously. She may know that he didn't show up, and based on his reaction, does not know about her doing the same. But it's not until his breakdown, where she listens to Perrito and him talk, that she finally understands WHY he did it. And how much it hurt him to do so. That he is legit ashamed of himself. Before that moment, she was sure he was out to betray her, like everyone in her life. But after she hears the real reason, she stops treating him so harshly. She opens the dialogue/ gave Puss the opportunity to talk about it with her. You can bet that she was the one that got them so high in the trees. After all she has no claws to climb, and yet she was so far in front of him, as if leading him up to a place he would have naturally been given him an advantage... But she's trusting him. Its Kitty who opens up the conversation with the "if you wanted to hold my hand/ I remember the last time you did this you had cold feet " dialogue. And when he takes her up on it, and nervously tells her what/ why he did it, and how it is EXACTLY like he told Perrito, she rewards him by finally coming clean about what she did. Why she left him too. And finally tells him the whole truth on the matter.

You can also tell that that's the moment she truly starts to fall in love with him again. "You don't seem like that guy anymore." Is a statement that has so many layers to it, but the biggest implication is that this version of Puss, is the one she is starting to trust.

The shaving scene may have set the mood earlier on the movie, but this open and honest conversation, is what made her swoon and start to believe in him.

5.)I think it sets up a good story/ contrast to who they were at the beginning, and who they are now. And by beginning, I mean them at the end of Puss and Boots 1. In that movie they're flirting, equals, in love... but their relationship is also unstable. She ended that film stealing from him and running off. And in the Shrek franchise, its shown Puss is quite the flirt with the ladies, imlplying they're not together. This Santa Colona flashback fills in the blanks for what happened between the movies, and also shows that when they first met, they may have been too young for each other. Too inexperienced. Not old enough to want to actually settle down, on both ends! If I were to hazard a guess, I'd bet that Puss proposed spontaneously, and she accepted in a moment of excitement, but leading up to the ceremony they both got more and more nervous until eventually, they both got cold feet and dipped, but for different reasons. He was too obsessed with himself and worried about his legend, and she was too flighty and could not trust him. Which ended their relationship (this is mostly HC though. Just speculation on my end.) But now they're both a lot older. They've lived a few lives, though we don't have a concrete number, there's clearly been many years between now and Shrek 4. And Puss in Boots 1 was a prequel to the Shrek series so, yeah, they are both MUCH older now and are both finally at a point where the two are ready to settle down and be together.

Who they are right now, is the best version of themselves. And in contrast to the last moment, instead of her running off with his boots, they are sailing away together, with him in her arms.

I understand the appeal of saying she lied... but I LOVE the implications of what it means for her to be truthful.

They are currently my FAVORITE couple is Shrek franchise. Softboots is perfect! And it's their open honesty and trust in one another, that makes it so.❤

Since TAOPIB takes place after Puss left San Ricardo and before the events of the 2011 PIB film, and since Dulcinea leaves San Lorenzo with Puss at the end of TAOPIB, I like to imagine that they managed to stay together as friends/lovers, traveling companions, and a polycurious couple.

So, by the time Puss and Dulcinea meet up with Humpty and Kitty, let's just say Puss wasn't the only one attracted to Miss Softpaws.

Love wasn’t something Death fully understood. It made turned people stupid and always led to heartbreak. Love was uncertain, unpredictable, and cruel. The wolf often witnessed the pain and misery mortals experience when their loved ones die. He was so confused as to why they would put themselves through that. It seemed like a barbaric punishment and one they were willing to suffer through. Death never understood why until he found it himself. He never expected to find love, let alone with the cat he intended to hunt down. What turned out to be a simple job turned into a two and six-month relationship with his target. He loved Puss In Boots with all his heart. Death couldn’t imagine a life without his fearless feline; hopefully, he wouldn’t have to. The wolf wanted the rest of their lives together and beyond. He wanted to travel with their perfect little family and return to their beautiful Spanish home. Death just hoped that everything went according to plan on Puss’ birthday. Goldie and Arthur had planned the celebratory ball for the occasion, ensuring everything was just right. It had to be. Not only did the cat deserve it, but the wolf also planned to propose during the event. Even though he began extremely close to Puss’ friends and family, he was still nervous about getting their blessing. Death wanted reinsurance that he was doing the right thing and had no intentions of taking the fearless hero away from them. Mama Imelda was overjoyed when hearing the news, even more so when the wolf stated he wanted her and the orphans there. The three diablos were even more so, especially when they were officially getting a new parent out of it. Not that it mattered since they already called him Dad.

 The only issue that arose from the plan was the engagement ring. Everyone wanted to help out, and it just added stress to the whole ordeal. It wasn’t until he went with Kitty and his future mother-in-law that things seemed to calm down. It took Death four days, but he finally found the perfect ring. It had a silver wrap-around band with a wolf head on one end and the tail on the other. The eyes and the inside of the ears were rubies, making it even more perfect. Now it was just a matter of popping Puss the question. The closer it got, the more nervous Death became, and he could tell Puss suspected something. He attempted to put the beautiful feline at ease, but it didn’t work. Making it harder to keep the proposal a surprise. The wolf always kept the ring on himself, fearing the cat would find it. Then the day finally arrived, and the wolf was a wreck. Especially when waiting for the guest of honour to arrive. He felt like he was suffocating in a black regency tailcoat and downed half a bottle of champagne before Imelda confiscated it.

   “Por el amor de Dios, I won’t have you wasted before he arrives.” Imelda scolded

  “I’m just nervous…What if he says no?”

  “He won’t, Lobo. Puss loves you with all his heart.”

  “I don’t even know why most of the time.”

  Imelda hit him in the back of the head. “You listen here; there’s no room for such negativity. He will say yes, and the two will have your happy ending.”

  “You think so?”

  “I know so. He adores you and couldn’t ask for a better son-in-law.”

   Death wagged his tail happily. As an immortal, the wolf never had a mother. Sure, he had creators, but that’s precisely what they were. Death never saw them as parental figures, not that they even tried to be. They created him and just left him with no guidance or purpose. The wolf never knew the feeling of motherly love until Puss introduced him to Imelda. She was a compassionate, no-nonsense woman who welcomed him with open arms. She was the mother Death didn’t realise he needed. The wolf hugged Imelda tightly before the trumpets announced Puss’ arrival. He found himself staring in awe at his boyfriend. Puss was dressed in a pastel green poet blouse, beige dress pants and, of course, his signature boots. The cat looked so gorgeous and happy that it made the wolf nervous. Death drifted into the shadows as the party commenced, watching Puss from afar. Whenever the wolf worked up the courage, the cat was dragged away by one of the children or his friends. He was tempted to postpone the proposal when Puss climbed onto the table and kissed him.

   “Are you alright, Estimado?”

  “Yes, gato. Just didn’t want to interrupt you with your friends.”

  “As sweet as that is, I would love to spend some more time with my boyfriend.”

  Death smiled nervously at Puss. “Well, if that’s what you want...follow me birthday boy.”

   Puss smiled back as the wolf led them to the palace’s rose garden. They sat on a stone bench and looked up at the night sky. This was it; no turning back now. He knew Puss loved him and knew the chances of him saying yes were high. Still, Death’s panic increased. He hated how his anxiety was making him second-guess everything.

  “Muerte, talk to me. I’ve never seen you like this.”

   The wolf looked at his boyfriend and took his tiny paws in his large ones. He took a few deep breaths, only speaking when his anxiety managed to calm down a little.

   “Puss, mi amor. Words can’t express how much I adore you, care about you. You are my everything.”

  “Wolfie, where are you going with this? Not that I mind your public declaration.”

  “I’m getting there.” Death chuckled. “I love you and our little diablos so much. I can’t imagine my life without you, and I don’t want to. I want to be with you forever, Puss. I want to settle in a cottage and raise our kittens there.”

  Puss just stared at him. “Wait, are you…”

  Death got down on one knee and put out the ring. “Puss in Boots, will you do me the honour of becoming my husband?”

  The wolf watched as the cat broke down. Tears and eyeliner dripped down his face as a large smile formed on the feline’s face. The expression on Puss’ face was all the confirmation Death needed.

  “So, is that a yes, Gatitio?”

 “YES, MI AMOR!! A MILLION TIMES, YES!!” Puss exclaimed as he snatched the ring and put it on his finger.

  Death soon became tearful as he grabbed Puss and spun them around happily. He then pulled the cat close and smothered him in kisses. Looking deeply into Puss’ emerald eyes, Death still couldn’t believe he was engaged to the love of his life. Still couldn’t believe such a heavenly creature would want to be with someone like him.

   “This is the best gift ever Muerte. I love it so much.”

 “You mean it?”

 “Of course!! I got a beautiful ring and a even more beautiful fiance. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

 “That’s all I want to hear. I love you Mi dulce gatito.”

 “I love you too Lobo.”

Hey!!! I just read your update chapter! (Sorry for the late response) But I just want to tell you that you and your coworker are doing great work on the chapter!

1. I like the way Death comforts Puss after his breakdown and struggles his panic attack. Although, Puss did mention Death about his parents which led me to concern about his parents. Death was given a bit of detail to Puss about his mother. That left me with a question about how Death is called Puss' "old man"? Is he usual to call him that or not? Also, Fox cat? I love that nickname for Puss' father 😍😆

2. Speaking of comfort, I love it when Frostbite tries to convince Kitty and attempt to calm her down. But finally! Kitty seeing the truth about what she has been treating Puss about. This made me feel sorry for Kitty after what her old owners did to her. It truly was traumatized for her 😔 But things go truly went well for her and Puss after the truth come out from Puss.

2. NEW SHIP ARRIVED!!!! FINALLY!!! Sleeping Beauty and Wildlife meet each other! Wait until his three friends tease him about her 😂 Especially Death and Justice!

I was meaning to reply that last night but sleep took over me… but anyway, here we go;

1) Disneyfriend had always wanted to expand their conversation with Puss’ biological parents and I agree with them because I know that Puss did have parents who sadly died when he was only a kitten. But it sweet that magic had another way to finally meet his father in his dream but have no idea that he would be called Zerro, and Puss be called Antonio named after the voice actor who is the best hero of the legends.

2) There had to be a reason why Kitty would act up this way because of her old owners treated her, especially took her claws away before Frostbite brought them back to her. Puss could see how much Kitty and Frostbite cared for each other, even though they weren’t sure to admit or that since Puss’ feelings were getting stronger for Death

3) Yes, because why not! Wildlife deserves to be love and Sleeping Beauty is perfect for this since they shared the love of Italian food

willow is explicitly about a man but damn. Not sure if it’s the folk-y genre but the queer vibes are immaculate. Dress is my demisexuality anthem, I always fall for people who I initially met as friends and the attraction gets so INTENSE. mirrorball, Labyrinth, Sweet Nothing, peace, right where you left me and the lakes also give me anxious queer girl vibes. Glitch, to me, definitely has bi girl in an situationship with a straight man that she’s actually falling in love with kind of atmosphere.

The Very First Night, Gasoline, I Can See You and Maroon gives sapphic bisexuals to me, though I do believe they are in part (if not entirely) about men. And I just think that’s neat, that the narrator in the songs has such a queer approach to her relationship regardless to the gender of the muse. Not even all songs without pronouns can pull that off so well.

Vigilante Shit is incredible to me because it’s like she’s stealing someone’s ex-wife. (Also “I don’t dress for women, I don’t dress for men …”) It has hardcore badass bisexual written all over it. And every time Taylor sings “To tell you the truth, sometimes I wish I was her,” in When Emma Falls in Love, I can swear what the song is actually, unbeknownst to herself pining for is to date Emma herself. It feels like Taylor’s own subtly homoerotic version of Lacy by Olivia Rodrigo, or Heather by Conan Gray. There’s this playful genderbending thing Taylor does when singing the chorus of Question…? which also reads as very much a bisexual gaze to me.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and yes I'm late, so sue me

I wasn't going to watch any of the PiB movies but I heard 'Death' was a character, so

First two minutes: It's GORGEOUS and here's an entire post of me freaking out over the visual mastery of this film

If I'd seen this in theatres today I'd get kicked out for gasping so much

The animation style is so beautiful I'm gasping out loud and had to stop three minutes in to begin this post, it's wild. The particles - !

LOOK AT THE TEXTURE OF THE LEATHER HAT. THE ANIMATORS ARE FLEXING AND THEY ARE FLEXING HARD.

Every single frame of this film is a goddamn work of art. Look at the stars on the wooden ceiling. Look at the lighting.

he has the saddest backstory but he's just happy to have his life and his friends, whereas Puss had nine lives and didn't appreciate any of them, okay, I get it now

The dog actually calmed Puss down from a panic attack and you could hear his heartbeat calming and it was really sweet

The framing of this film is fantastic. Also, Death? Actual Death? The thing that Puss wasn't aware he was afraid of or even needed to be afraid of yet was running from his entire life? Such an incredible villain

I can't concentrate on anything else about the movie because everything is just so goddamn pretty.

The movements and the visuals are just a little bit choppy and a little unfinished, making every still look like a painting. It's so stylized and wonderfully so

I appreciate that Goldilocks finally accepted her family but it's okay to want other things, I think, as long as you're not taking for granted what you currently have. That said, they're definitely going to have to talk it out because stuff like that doesn't just go away with a quip and a new business plan

One that note, the fucking cricket was hilarious. John Mulaney's character was a riot and I appreciate the cricket giving up on him as a bad job.

I was worried about Death's defeat being a bit of a cop-out but it wasn't. Death was angry that Puss was given so many lives and appreciated exactly none of them, thinking himself invincible forever, not understanding consequences because they never really applied to him, so they decided to cheat and take his last one early. But Puss accepted his mortality and began to appreciate his last life properly, so Death let him live it. It was done well.

I don't really like the 'tough girl no trust femme fatale love interest' thing, I think it's tired and overwrought, so Kitty wasn't my favorite, but I liked her anyway. And I liked that she's able to poor-little-meow-meow Puss when he least expects it.

The doctor scene where we went through each of Puss's lives was storyboarded so beautifully, even the title cards were gorgeous

I can't do anything besides gush over how fucking pretty this film was, I'm useless

Anyway watch the film, it's just a masterpiece and the music was fantastic and I loved the whole thing

It was strange, not being alone.

Sure, sure, at Mama Luna’s home, Puss had never been left alone. There was always someone’s mittened paw thrust in his face, while he unsuccessfully attempted to sleep. Always someone’s bony shoulder bumping into his, while he suffered dunking his beard into the disgusting, rock-hard pellets claiming to be food. Always someone’s nosy gaze burning holes into his fur while he tried to take a dignified crap on the...well, the completely vulnerable and thoughtlessly out in the open and holy frijoles, couldn’t the woman have at least provided a cardboard box or something for privacy?—litterbox. No one had ever left him alone for a single moment, ever given him a crumb’s worth of privacy. That had been exhausting.

But this…? This was a different kind of not being alone.

One that felt...significantly better.

Puss glanced down at Perrito’s sleeping form. The little dog’s head was resting on Puss’s stomach like had happened that fateful day in the forest. All else of Perrito couldn’t be seen, concealed by Puss’s discarded cape. Perrito’s soft snores were a constant hum of white noise, almost in rhythm with the lackadaisical waves clapping against the ship.

They’d weighed anchor hours ago, and Puss had sat down for a breather, only to find that Perrito wanted attention. The little dog didn’t chatter as much as Puss mentally prepared himself for. Instead, Perrito quietly turned a circle, lay down, and sighed happily, eventually falling asleep.

Yes, one could perhaps say that such an innocent gesture had caught Puss in Boots off guard...but, he reasoned, a fearless hero must ever adapt to the unexpected.

He still had much to learn during this last life of his.

A great yawn stretched Puss’s mouth. He shifted slightly, rubbing his fur against the mast behind him. A functional backrest, but not the most comfortable.

“Are you going to stay up here all night?”

The mockery was, he noted with a grin, decidedly quieter than normal. Puss turned to see Kitty standing nearby. Her blue eyes gleamed in the dim, but her silhouette was slightly off. He raised an eyebrow. She’d swiped his hat again and was shamelessly flaunting it.

“You know,” Puss said lightly, “if you really fancy that style all that much, you could get one of your own.”

“Ugh, then I would match you.” Kitty shuddered dramatically, but he saw her smiling. “How disgusting.”

“Disgusting?” he scoffed. “Puss in Boots boasts only the most fashionable hat in all the land!" "We are not on land anymore," Kitty countered. "I do not think your argument stands." Ignoring her, Puss continued, with a wave of his paw, "It would be a bold statement to replicate such a distinguished style!”

“Like your beard?”

“The beard was fine,” he huffed. “Just itchy.”

“Mmmhmm,” Kitty mused. She tilted the hat mischievously, revealing more of her face. “And why should I get one of my own when I can just take yours whenever I please?” With a flourish, she swung his hat aside and plopped it right over his face.

“Exactly why you should,” Puss grumbled into the crown, though he wasn’t all that bothered. She always gave back what she stole from him.

Puss returned his hat to its rightful place, taking care to fluff the feather. Kitty raised her paw, as if testing the night air. “It’s cold up here,” she said. “You should come down where it is warm.”

He straightened the brim and nodded at Perrito. “I do not wish to move him.”

“Oh, you are a big softie,” Kitty said teasingly. “The fearsome hero, Puss in Boots, staying up all night above deck because he did not wish to wake a little dog.”

“You would have done the same, Kitty Softpaws.”

“Don’t be so grumpy.”

“I am not being grumpy—”

“But you are being loud! Shush!” Kitty knelt beside him. “Here, I’ll do you a favor. That way you owe me later.”

The true generosity of an outlaw, he thought. Always willing to lend a hand, so long as something was promised—or simply “provided”—in return.

Not that he minded paying her back.

True to her reputation, Kitty executed her plan with nary a sound. Carefully, she wrapped the cape around Perrito, snuggling him in a big fabric burrito, and scooped him up. Perrito burbled in his sleep, but otherwise didn’t stir.

Puss noted how Kitty’s expression shifted to something quite tender, but chose not to comment, lest she rob him of his hat again...or worse.

Now that the weight was off him, Puss felt free to stand. Having leaned against the mast for so long, his back was somewhat stiff, and made a loud crack when he stretched.

He caught Kitty’s eye again. She snorted. “And you would have kept in that position all night,” she tsked as she headed for the cabin. “Maybe even the next day too, if Perrito slept in.”

Puss followed her step for step, right by her side. “Are you not supposed to let sleeping dogs lie? Is that not a whole thing?”

“Not all the time, you shouldn’t.” Kitty bumped his shoulder with her own. “And...I am glad you did not with us, Puss in Boots.”

Despite the chill she claimed was in the air, Puss suddenly felt quite warm. He could not help but grin, as that warmth that radiated in his chest soon spread all the way down to the honored boots his mamá had given him so long ago.

Maybe, Puss thought, this different kind of Not Being Alone was not so strange after all.

Here’s some random HCs I thought up for Team Friendship and Death

Puss has a significantly larger number of friends than most of his closest peers know about. There are many, many people in the world who know him personally, but never really see him because he’s always out on adventures.

Through sheer commitment and determination, Perrito has learned how to make flower crowns and gives one to everyone he meets.

Kitty and Perrito take turns doing Puss’s eyeliner whenever he doesn’t feel like doing it himself.

Puss has only cried three times in his life. The day after abandoning Humpty, the day he abandoned his name after encountering Death, and the day he faced Death in the crater of the Wishing Star.

Puss still does wonder what would have happened if he wished back his lives. Knowing what he knows now and having the life he has, he’s always been curious to see if anything would have changed after his battle with Death.

Kitty has multiple lives, but only 7 instead of 9. She prefers not to talk about how she lost her first two, but judging by the story she told Puss in the first movie, he has come to his own conclusion.

Puss, despite being a cat, loves the rain. Kitty and Perrito will often catch him sitting outside in it alone, meditating or just watching it fall.

Puss is Bi, Kitty is Pan.

Puss and Kitty both own self-made necklaces of golden eggs to honor Humpty’s memory. They’ll tell Perrito about him sometimes.

Perrito, sheerly through complete curiosity, has met and associated himself with multiple royal officials and high-ranking knights across Spain to the point of Puss and Kitty’s names being constantly brought up in recruitment-based conversations. Because of this, they usually let Perrito do the talking during important meetings and things of that nature.

Kitty’s “spiritual retreat” that Goldilocks mentioned in The Last Wish is pertaining to what happened to her immediately after Puss left her at the altar. On that retreat, she tried to dissociate from Puss’s legacy and name completely, accidentally running into Goldi and confining in her because of what happened, and even Shrek at one point and wondering how Puss makes such odd friends.

Because of Puss and Kitty’s accidental influence, Perrito also wears eyeliner now.

Death, being well, Death, knows an angel who completely opposes his job and world view. While they have no bad blood, they’re constantly at odds with each other, with Death ending lives that have met their due date and this angel fighting to rebirth them into someone new altogether. This angel isn’t Life, either. Just an angel.
