Masters' Academy AU: Magic Types

One of the million bit of lore I'll eventually need to explain is that magic users are divided by the energy source they draw upon...

Different energies are better at different things, but with time and effort they can be put to any task. For example someone born with an affinity for fire magic could throw a fireball better than any of our trio, but that doesn't mean the boys couldn't do it too.

There are also some passive effects holding the energies within you; like a proto-spell it's something a magic user does automatically and unconsciously to digest the energy they naturally draw in but aren't doing anything with.

The effects are the kind of thing you'd expect; to use the example of the fire mage again, they'd not really notice hot or cold weather. Norman can see the dead, Dipper has near perfect recall, and Danny has heightened empathy.

Atsushi and Pain

wanted to talk about the 55 minutes pain paragraph so here we are

In fiction, there's always been the trend of finding loopholes to prevent fatal injuries from actually being fatal. Characters magically able to live in situations where they definitely should be dead or sometimes even just brought back to life. Bsd unsurprisingly is no exception, from basically the third chapter and onward Atsushi is constantly taking blows that he only manages to live through because of the "healing" aspect of his ability. Even to the point of losing limbs.

Because of this I find often large injuries in fiction are something you easily become desensitized to, which is why this moment the 55 minutes light novel is so notable to me. Usually something like two bullet wounds (the injuries Atsushi has in the scene) seems simple and almost standard. He is shown getting worse injuries all of the time. So to read that casually and then to be hit in the face with four paragraphs on Atsushi's relationship with pain and for it to be described to the audience that pain is not something he has gotten used to but instead a constant agonizing experience that he has learned to endure throughout the span of years gives the scene so much more meaning. To have pain be described as something Atsushi has learned to perceive as integral to his very identity and existence shifted my entire view on Atsushi character and in all honesty I think of "Atsushi hated pain." everytime that he gets hurt in the main manga.

(Also specification of Atsushi negating his wounds not healing or recovering them was actually monumental to me personally)

Should we talk about the Scottish Play? Yours truly has been privileged enough to see both runs of the DT/CJ led production. And I wish I were able to explain how it affected me. I’ve seen lots of Shakespeare. I’ve seen David Tennant do lots of Shakespeare. But in a way that sounds like I’m exaggerating but I’m totally not? This one changed my life. It’s complicated, it’s deeply personal. It’s hard to put into words. But what a perfect, beautiful, intensely moving piece of theatre (1000% totally worth flying across the world for twice). I don’t think I CAN put it into words that would do it justice. So have pictures.

Last year the theatre was much more strict about photography during curtain call. I guiltily dared once and I have one almost usable picture that proves I was there. And okay a really crap one but I love the blurry smile and the stark blood on the stage (the Pinter run didn't have blood at the end, i missed it).

Turns out, my pictures this year aren’t much better. Even with a house and production that was totally cool with photos and videos during curtain call. But I tried. The last time I saw it (13 Dec), you can just see the bandage on DT’s wrist from his new tattoo. My favorite thing is how relieved both he and Cush look after they’re done performing. I think even these kind of not great pictures capture that.

Just... look at them.

hngh. okay first rant post I just think amoneki is so insane especially for how much they care and respect for each other right up until the very end like???

okay first of all there's obviously the way that they outright say (even if it's not directly to each other) that they don't want the other to die

Also the fact that Amon tells Kaneki to take a Break. In the middle of a fight. (Which also adds him to the pool of characters that are trying to tell Kaneki to tell him to just let himself rest for once (who he does Not listen to))

Also the fact that when Kaneki deals his first (and only) potentially fatal blow to Amon Ever, instead of feeling betrayed by the fact that he was trying to avoid attacking him before or thinking "Oh so this is where he finally tries to actually kill me" Amon just calls Kaneki strong. He Cut Off His Arm and Amon's first thought is just to say that he thinks he's strong, even if this should technically be a sort of betrayal to all their previous encounters and a Contradiction to what Amon observed at the beginning of this fight about how Kaneki really wasn't planning on killing him (it's like even though this happened he knows deep down that it wasn't with a real killing Intent).

He doesn't even think about himself or that he might Actually Die he's just thinking about Kaneki even right then and afterwards

(ohhh my god I hate Amon (/affecionate) I have so many Thoughts about him especially thoughts Specifically about how he has a sort of idealized version of Kaneki in his head from the few times they've interacted I could talk about it for Hours (but then I'm gonna be here for ages and I will get So off track) )

And it's also about the fact that. In his final thoughts/words in tg Kaneki opens up with Amon's words; these are his words that have been stuck in his head ever since he first heard them and they are some of the last words he clings to before he's "erased". (When I first saw that line near the opening of the final chapter I almost lost my Shit) Like,

It's about how even up until the end they're thinking about what they said to each other at that first encounter by the river

It's about how much impact they've had and Continue to have on each other even when they're basically Dying (and it's partially the others' fault)

It's about the actually Insane amount of parallels and the flipping of their situations between their first encounter and their last (in the original series)

It's about how neither of them deal the killing blow in an "unfair" fight (when the other is basically disarmed) but once they're on equal grounds that's the closest they've come to Actually killing the other and even then they don't want that to Actually happen and both hold onto that same thought

It's about how the natural thing would be for them to just fight and/or kill the other without a thought but they don't because "This guy's Different"

people on this website really want to imagine non-voters as smug white leftists who just hate the system, man, and not like poor and working class people whose schedules don't allow for it, black and latino communities who are intentionally targeted for voter suppression, people who live in heavily gerrymandered areas or states where their vote straight up won't count, people whose politics don't match up with the increasingly partisan party lines, or any other reason and/or combination of aforementioned reasons.

and the reason tumblr continues tilting at these windmills of "leftists are the real problem" (even though everyone was a "leftist" in December) is that all the reasons people don't vote are systemic problems that require intentional and organized solutions. there are real and material ways to put people in poll booths (or mailing their ballots), but they require work. they require making sure polling places are more accessible to voters in ways that range from making sure the polling place is ADA compliant to better signs so drivers know where they're going and better parking so they don't leave. they require voter registration drives and helping eligible felons restore their voting rights. they require educating the community on mail-in ballots and early voting opportunities. they require getting people who maybe disillusioned with federal level candidates excited about local or state level candidates where they could make a difference because if you can get them to polls for something they do feel strongly about they might go ahead and vote for the federal candidate anyway because they're already there. they require holding the fucking democrats accountable for their actions after the election to stop fucking going out of their way to alienate their voting bases, Joseph Goddamn Biden, and not sweeping those concerns under the rug as "not that bad" to make your candidate look better.

there are so many different ways to help increase voter turn-out, but they all require reaching out to your community and finding the way you can help to the best of your personal abilities. I know this because the examples I've listed above are things I've either personally done or my friends, who have different skills than I do, have done. what does not help voter turnout in the fucking slightest is taking the easy out of whining on the internet about how leftists are a threat to democracy like a goddamn conservative because you think the anarchists you see online are annoying. it's not only internet activism at its fucking laziest, and as i've said many times before, it actively stokes reactionary sentiments among moderate liberals. you are not being the measured and nuanced voice of reason for contributing to this shit. you are being lazy in hopes to sound like the smartest voice in the room and giving credence to something that is more inherently dangerous to long-term progress than the tiktok teens joking about terrorism or whatever you've decided to froth at the mouth about because you're falling for inflammatory Fox News-level propaganda tactics.
