April 16, PCT 2018 Day - 4 To past Mount Laguna

Our site was so windy the night before and a lite rain and even a few flakes flew. We weren’t too far outside of Laguna and planned to get breakfast. Fueled by the thought of food we rushed to town. On the way we bumped into a friend for the AT!

In town we got breakfast and supplies and took our sweet time charging our devices. We were still biding time for Gargoyle to catch up. We met Orange, Asian Bill and others. After spending most of the day just bumbing around Laguna we headed out to try and find a camp spot. I headed out first and Happs was going to catch up later.

I passed the water fountain which was a completely covered in bees. Literally hundreds of honey bees. I could not find anything even remotely good for camping. A lot of the land was private or belonged to the pay site that we were avoiding. After walking probably 5 extra miles and right around dusk I found a site that was suitable for the two of us and set up. By the time Happs made it I was setup for cowboy camping. I took care of business and watched the sunset. We cooked dinner in our sleeping bags and caught up on he days events.

Why am I hiking the #PacificCrestTrail again? Well if you want to get metaphysical about it, I would argue that I am hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for the first time. Both the trail and I have changed dramatically since my first thru-hike and we would probably be nearly unrecognizable to our former selves. The Southern Terminus Monument has even been replaced since I hiked! (And now it faces the other way so that the most glorious US/Mexico border fence is no longer visible in people's photos.) I did all the standard research before my first #PCT hike, but the amount I learned actually on the trail (and since the trail) is many times greater than everything I thought I had learned simply browsing the internets pre-PCT. I'm excited to get out there and see how things have changed since the trail and I first became acquainted (but mostly to try to prove @simajohnr and @itsbleucheese wrong in their assertions that I will hate it and end up getting off after a couple of weeks - I really hope they're wrong). w/ about 99.5% of everything I need ready to go I'm hovering around a 22lb #baseweight (all my gear not including food, water, bear canister or ice axe - or cool #SafariHat [that's on the way]). Not too shabby for my first go 'round. One of the great thing about the PCT is that there are the occasional hotsprings. This gem is right next to the chill Deep Creek allowing you to cool off quickly if you start overheating. A little hard to take photos here seeing as clothing is optional.

Some days are better than others! July 21st 2016 we had made camp at Rae Lakes the night before. (For those of you that have not had the pleasure, imagine the most beautiful place you've seen and multiple that by 1000). It was hard to leave such a beautiful place so we left late and I wish I hadn't. As beautiful as this small section from Rae Lakes to Pinocchio Pass was, it really was one of the most physically and mentally brutal and challenging one as well. After a late breakfast and late start Firecracker @prettylittlefleur, Neon and myself left camp, it was a long hot hike to the ssuspension bridge where we took a later lunch. This would put us on Pinocchio pass at about 1 pm or so we thought. It had been hot this day and the climb sucked, we had these tall steps going up to the pass which made it slow going and painful, the mosquitoes were thick in the air and had the same hiker hunger as I did apperntly, because they were eating at any chance they got. My wife and hiking partner Butterfly @lorianhikes had left trail a week or so prior due to an injury and I couldn't get out of my head because of that. Combined with having to poop in the mosquito cloud, it was my breaking point of sorts. I was cursing my body for not holding it, I was cursing the damn mosquitoes for eating my ass while I pooped, I was curseing the damn pass for being such a hard climb, I was cursing Neon for being faster than me, I was cursing Firecracker for being Firecracker, I was cursing Gifford Pinocchio for having the pass name after him and butterfly for leaving... I hate my life and everyone I knew! We didnt even make it over the pass this day, I think we made 9 miles this day and camped about a mile away from the pass.
