My favorite part about hiking in the mountains of California is all the snow fed mile high ponds and lakes you can only get to by hiking multiple days. I've never swam in such beauty!

09/20/17 - Otter Rock, OR - FITTY SHRIMP UNWOUND - If you need to unwind for awhile, come visit for a few days when we are home basing on the ocean in Otter Rock.

First met Fitty Shrimp while hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2014. I saw a ‘rattlesnake warning’ note left on a rocky section of trail in Pennsylvania signed by a hiker named Fitty. A few minutes later, I found him sitting under a shade tree. He asked me if I wanted to see his rattlesnake video. After that, we ran into each other a few more times before losing contact in Vermont. But, AT thru-hikers are a bit of a fraternity and sometimes we stay in touch. Since the AT, Fitty has been very busy with long distance thru-hiking. This summer, he was doing the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and was in Northern California when large sections of the trail were closed due to all the extreme forest fires this year. Leaving the trail and calling off a quest is not an easy decision for someone like Fitty who is used to finishing what he starts. The disappointment can be deflating - especially when it’s due to circumstances you can’t control. Glad he was able to visit us in Otter Rock for a few days where he could unwind, regroup and contemplate his next quest. Go Fitty!

Well I made it to mile 1100. Through the desert and the Sierra Nevada's 200% snowpack. Unfortunately a broken foot has brought my trip to an abrupt and unwelcome end. Until I reattempt, farewell.

I hiked a lot this day. Felt like I was doing better miles. Maybe. Who knew.

Ran into some day hikers.

Entered Lassen National Park this day.

Took a side trip to Terminal Geyser.

Passed by Boiling Spring.

Paid too much for a meal at Drakesbad.

Met some cool hikers and camped in a campground.

That is all.

I hiked into California a long while back. Nothing's more striking than Mount Shasta on a misty morning. Only 2 more months to go!

I have mostly been updating my Instagram Rachael_Rabbit with everything going on. I had a great hike I to the Sierras and up Mount Whitney. After that point the snow and rivers turned the hike into a mountaineering trip. After getting swept down two icy rivers I knew the conditions were too dangerous for me to continue in that section. I have now gone farther north on the trail and will return within the season to complete the sierras when it is safer. This section of the hike has been the hardest emotional and physical challenge for me so far. "I knew that if I allowed fear to overtake me, my journey was doomed.
