Padmavati row: Is THIS the real reason why Kangana Ranaut refused to come out in support of Deepika Padukone? – At a time when a number of Bollywood celebs have come out to support Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati and condemned the death threats given to its lead actress Deepika Padukone as well as SLB, Kangana Ranaut has refused to do the same. Of Padmavati's historical veracity and belligerent sons of Mother India
The Rajputs in Rajasthan — or rather, a fringe group that claims to represent the entire community — has ensured that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati is consigned, at least for the time being, to a limbo. Its release has been indefinitely delayed, different state governments have waded into the muddy debate and banned the film or have asked for legal action against its makers, a senior worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party has put out a bounty on the heads of the director and actors and yet continues to roam around freely. The rule of law has been suspended for the time being to satisfy demands of a violent group, as political parties measure what electoral gains can be squeezed out of the current imbroglio.
One of the claims of the belligerent Rajputs is that the 14th-century fictional queen of Chittor, Padmavati, is like their mother. Inherent in this, is a celebration of jauhar. Whether or not Bhansali’s film celebrates this barbaric tradition or is a more feminist retelling will remain unknown for some time to come. For the time being, we have been told by the film’s makers that there is no surreal erotic or romantic scene between Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) and Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh). This sanitisation of the mother figure as asexual is typical of nationalist projects that construct themselves around the presumed honour of women — and the duty of men to protect it. Though such an idea should be immediately consigned to the trash bin of patriarchy, it has been rather popular in Hindi cinema, as we shall see from the three following examples.

Padmavati controversy based on rumours: Bhansali tells Parliamentary panel
Amidst a seething discussion over his movie "Padmavati", chief Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Thursday showed up before a Parliamentary panel here and kept up that the column over the yet-to-be-discharged motion picture was simply in light of gossipy tidbits, unequivocally dismissing charges that he had twisted recorded actualities about the sixteenth century Rajput ruler.
Bhansali was barbecued for more than two hours by individuals from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT as he showed up before it in Parliament House with Prasoon Joshi, who heads the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Sources revealed to IANS that the producer was inquired as to why he had screened the film for a couple of select writers even before it was cleared by the edit board.
"All the discussion over the film depends on gossipy tidbits. I have not misshaped realities. The film depends on a ballad by Malik Muhammad Jayasi," Bhansali stated, alluding to the sixteenth century Indian Sufi artist's epic lyric "Padmavat".

Amid 'Padmavati' din, Khilji's tomb shrouded in silence
The tomb is located within a madrasa built by Khilji as a college for education on Islamic scriptures and theology
Alauddin Khilji has become a household name, thanks to the swirling row over 'Padmavati', but not many know that Delhi Sultanate's most powerful ruler lies buried in the Qutub complex. Ironically, the tomb which is located in the same complex as the Qutub Minar, a popular tourist spot, is often overshadowed by the grandeur of the world's tallest brick minaret built by his ancestors.
Historian and writer R V Smith argues that the popular contention that Khilji was a womaniser is untrue, and asserts that he was the one who "saved Hindustan from the Mongols". "Had he not been there, the shape of Hindustan would have been different, in terms of geographical and racial compositions," he told PTI Bhasha. He clarified that Khilji invaded Chittor, but only to expand his kingdom like any other ruler. "It was not done for Rani Padmini," he said. According to Smith, Khilji defeated Rajput king Ratan Singh, conquered his territory, and then asked to see the queen, about whose beauty he had heard. Rakesh Batabyal, a professor of history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said there is not much left for historians to say on the 'Padmavati' issue, as it has now become a debate on freedom of expression, creativity and a political discourse. "History is a product of knowledge but today, forces have emerged in the country who do not recognise history. "Ignorance levels are so high that period films are now being considered history," the professor said. A careful tour of the complex reveals that the tomb is located within a madrasa built by Khilji as a college for education on Islamic scriptures and theology………read more

Padmavati row: A political weapon honed on mythology
A controversy has been raging over the release of the Hindi film Padmavati. As community leaders oppose its release on the grounds of hurt sentiment, others have offered huge bounties for beheading the filmmaker and the female lead. Various political leaders across states have spoken in favour of protesters. What is the political motivation behind this support? In this Business Standard Special, Mrinal Pande looks at why Padmavati has been used as a political weapon in the year 2017.
In today's India, one does not need to ask for history lessons. They come all the time from unexpected places, uninvited and longwinded. All castes, clans Gotras and Khaps seem to have discovered their own fantastical historical heroes and villains whom they would proudly whip out and flash to strangers like friends’ selfies, as filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali discovered – perhaps too late -- in Rajasthan. For the past eight centuries, the blade of Rajput history has been sharpened on the flint of myth and is now a deadly knife that politicians will use shamelessly against films and books based on myths and fairy tales, to carve up vote banks and people. Communities, both majority and minority, have at least one thing in common -- leaders who spare no excess in pursuing violent agendas. In Hindi, they have an evocative phrase gadey murdey ukhadana, or digging up ancient corpses, for the melodrama over an operatic film about a mythical figure, the Rajput queen, Padmavati.
The astounding ease with which public minds are being inflamed and manipulated by playing upon imagined insults and fears, is facilitated by the very nature of our masses still reeling under economic chaos and endemic joblessness among the young. We Indians are prone to taking life as it comes: literally and fatalistically. All the great events in history (wars, revolts, dethronings of tyrants), and in nature (wars, floods, earthquakes) remain to us our unavoidable Karma to which we must adjust. And since we mostly receive, not seek and research history, we become easy game for those who will strike the flints of myths of age old grievances against invaders from the West and light bonfires under the fragile fabric of a state poised for elections. And once the flames roar, no one buys the argument that barbarism in the name of historical justice is still barbarism. Not, it seems, even the Chief Ministers in many states who have taken an oath upon assuming office to maintain

Padmavati row: Karni Sena wants Bharat Bandh, Bhansali gets security cover
Bhansali has been facing the ire of various groups and self-styled experts on what they term as ‘erroneous’ depiction of Rajput queen Rani Padmavati.
Today's Paper : The Shri Rajput Karni Sena on Wednesday called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ (shutdown) on December 1 if Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie “Padmavati” releases on that date, while the Maharashtra government provided a precautionary security cover for the filmmaker in view of the increasing controversies and growing threats.
“We will hold rallies across the country, including Gurugram, Patna, Lucknow and Bhopal before the release date,” Lokendra Singh Kalvi, founder-patron of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, an organisation of the Rajput community, told media persons in Jaipur.
He said all communities, including Muslims, supported the Sena on the issue.
“We demand a complete ban on the film. Now, we don’t want any pre-screening of the movie. All we want is a ban,” he said.
He claimed that as per the Cinematography Act, the government can withhold the release of a movie for three months even after a go-ahead by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and it can be extended further.
“We request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the matter,” Kalvi said.
Bhansali has been facing the ire of various groups and self-styled experts on what they term as ‘erroneous’ depiction of Rajput queen Rani Padmavati.
There have been protests and violence against Bhansali and opposition to the film right from the time it was being shot at various locales in different parts of India and now, as it prepares for release globally soon.
Barring these groups and individuals, the entire film fraternity and civil society members have expressed support to Bhansali for his latest film venture.
The Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) has thanked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for providing security cover to Bhansali, who lives and works in Mumbai.
